Coronavirus: Some restaurants not reopening after phase one - The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - Vianney Massot Restaurant is the first Michelin-starred restaurant here to fall victim to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fine-dining French restaurant in Hongkong Street, which received its star last year, has shuttered for good. It was offering takeaway and delivery in April when dine-in was banned.

Its owners declined to comment on the closure.

The restaurant is named after its chef Vianney Massot, who came to Singapore in 2017 to head the kitchen at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Resorts World Sentosa.

After that restaurant closed in mid-2018, the Frenchman joined the restaurant at Hongkong Street, which was then named Bacchanalia. It was rebranded in March last year.

A slew of other food and beverage establishments have also announced that they will not be reopening when dine-in is allowed again in phase two of Singapore's reopening.

Among them is Tao Seafood, a Thai-Teochew restaurant at Asia Square which closed its doors on May 31.

Owner Adrian Lee said his lease was ending on June 30 and decided in February to give up the six-year-old business because of manpower shortage and rising costs.

He said: "It is getting increasingly difficult to meet the local manpower quotas. Our main chefs and service staff are getting old and it is difficult to replace them with younger local talent, who are less interested in joining a traditional Chinese F&B outlet.

"Also, rising costs and lower expenditures by the corporate sector in the last two years make the future of the restaurant appear dimmer by the day."

Business during that period dropped by about 30 per cent, he said. The Covid-19 pandemic drove the nail into the coffin, with revenue from takeaways and deliveries during the circuit breaker making up only 15 to 20 per cent of what the restaurant used to make.

And prospects for the restaurant, located in the Central Business District, do not look good even when dine-in is allowed again.

Mr Lee said: "With safe distancing and working from home as the new normal, we will be put under even greater pressure, especially as large gatherings in Chinese restaurants will not be possible.

"We can expect the distance between customers to increase by 50 per cent, but rents won't drop by 50 per cent."

Mr Lee will now focus on running fUnRiceSG, a casual rice bowl concept which is also at Asia Square and which serves a few of Tao's signature dishes such as pot-roasted prawns with glass noodles.

The Fabulous Baker Boy, a cafe in River Valley Road known for its cakes, will also not be back. It ceased operations on April 21 when F&B outlets in parks were told to close.

The cafe, which opened in 2012, was located in the former River Valley Swimming Pool at the foot of Fort Canning Hill.

Owner Juwanda Hassim, who was also the chef and baker, said: "We were told just the day before we had to close."

He said he had been doing well before with delivery orders.

Like Mr Lee, his decision to close had been made before the circuit breaker - except that he had intended to move to bigger premises when his lease runs out in July.

But his plans were scuppered by the pandemic.

He said: "It has been impossible to look for a new space as I can't do any viewings. I can only talk to real estate agents. And the future is uncertain."

Casual Vietnamese eatery SG Pho House in North Bridge Road bade farewell to its customers on its Facebook page on May 7 and thanked them for their support.

Salt Grill & Sky Bar, which sat at the top of Ion Orchard, has also confirmed that it is permanently closed.

The first Jamie's Italian outlet in Singapore, at VivoCity, shut on April 16 when its lease ran out.

But its other outlet, at Forum The Shopping Mall, is still operating and offers delivery, takeaway and drive-through pick-up options during this period.

Meanwhile, Ding Dong, a modern Asian restaurant by the Spa Esprit Group, faces an uncertain future.

Owner Cynthia Chua said it may be sold to an international hotel group. But if the deal does not go through, she will close it down.

The eatery, which was known for its colourful decor, opened in Ann Siang Hill in 2013 and moved to Amoy Street four years ago.

It is not goodbye forever for some, though. The Fabulous Baker Boy will be back, but Mr Juwanda added it "won't be resurfacing anytime soon... probably at the end of the year".

His 2020 earnings have been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, as his salary has dropped after the Juventus squad agreed to take a 30 percent pay cut.

Although Messi's salary this year was drastically reduced by 70% because the crisis, Forbes predicts the Argentine sensation will join his eternal rival in the billionaire's club next year.

Having been on hiatus since March, Serie A will return later this month, with Juve facing an away trip to Bologna on their first game back on June 22. They will then host Lecce four days later.

New York policemen suspended for injuring 75-year-old man during protests - TRT World

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

Protesters in New York again stayed on the streets past 8pm in defiance of the citywide curfew as protests sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police continue across the US.

A video of Buffalo policemen shoving an elderly protester to the ground, cracking his head, drew widespread condemnation even as the latest night of protests in New York City sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police was markedly calmer.

Two Buffalo, New York, police officers were suspended without pay on Thursday after a video showed them shoving a 75-year-old man to the ground, as protests continued into their tenth night.

The video taken by a reporter from local public radio station WBFO and posted on its website and Twitter account shows the white-haired man approaching a line of officers in riot gear. One officer pushes him with a baton and a second one with his hand.

The sound of a crack is heard and then blood trickles from the man's head. The man, who is white, is not identified.

Buffalo police initially said in a statement that a person "was injured when he tripped & fell," WIVB-TV reported, but Captain Jeff Rinaldo later told the TV station that an internal affairs investigation was opened.

The police commissioner subsequently suspended two police officers without pay, Mayor Byron Brown said in a statement.

The video quickly went viral on social media, spurring outrage.

'Stable but serious'

The mayor of the western New York city, who expressed he was "deeply disturbed" by the video, said the unidentified man was in "stable but serious" condition at a hospital.

"While it is early, thankfully he is expected to recover," Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted shortly after midnight.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo endorsed the officers' suspensions, tweeting that what was seen on video was "wholly unjustified and utterly disgraceful".

The office of State Attorney General Letitia James tweeted that they were aware of the video.

US Senator Charles Schumer called for an investigation, according to a statement reported by WIVB-TV.

"The casual cruelty demonstrated by Buffalo police officers tonight is gut-wrenching and unacceptable," John Curr, the Buffalo chapter director for the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement, adding that it should be a "wake-up call" for city leaders to address police violence.

Calls and emails to Buffalo police from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday night hadn't been returned by Friday morning.

Protests continue

Meanwhile, in New York City, protesters again stayed on the streets past 8 pm, in defiance of the citywide curfew that's set to remain in effect through at least Sunday.

Nationwide, the tenor of the protests set off by the death of Floyd, a black man who died Memorial Day after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into Floyd's neck, moved from explosive anger to a quiet yet forceful call for more to be done to address racial injustice.

The switch was largely mirrored in New York, which saw fewer violent clashes than in days past. But several videos posted to Twitter on Thursday night showed police aggressively confronting peaceful protesters – often resulting in arrest – in the Bronx and elsewhere. In other places, police watched but didn't immediately move in, or made orderly arrests without the batons and riot gear of previous nights.

Miguel Fernandes said there were "a lot more nights to go" of marching.

"We're still waiting for a conviction. We still haven't gotten it," Fernandes said. "All they're doing is putting in charges. The system is not doing anything to make these guys pay for what they did."

Memorial service

Earlier on Thursday, a memorial service featuring Floyd's brother Terrence Floyd was held at Brooklyn's Cadman Plaza, where the night before police had used batons and pepper spray on protesters who remained after curfew, videos show.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Cuomo, both Democrats, said they hadn't seen the widely shared videos, but Cuomo later tweeted that he was asking James to investigate as part of her ongoing look into police tactics during the protests.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea has defended his officers and the department's overall use of force.

De Blasio was booed and heckled at Floyd's memorial, where even some speakers took shots at the mayor, criticizing his management of the NYPD and response to the coronavirus pandemic. The mayor had previously praised the police for using "a lot of restraint" overall, but added that "if there's anything that needs to reviewed, it will be".

Shortly after midnight, the mayor tweeted that he had spoken to Shea after seeing a video of a delivery worker arrested. Food delivery is essential work, de Blasio said, adding in a second tweet that journalists covering protests, too, were essential workers.

De Blasio had previous condemned police for roughing up journalists, including two from the AP who were shoved, cursed at and told to go home by officers Tuesday night.

"Will get NYPD to fix this immediately," he tweeted Thursday.

Both Cuomo and de Blasio have said protesters should abide by the curfew to deter the violence, vandalism and destruction that followed protests Sunday and Monday nights. But as darkness fell Thursday, cries of "George Floyd" and "no justice, no peace" continued to ring out from crowds, even as they shrank.

"It's energetic," Kenyata Taylor said. "It's great to be alive, it's history right now."

Factbox - What the WHO recommends on face masks - Yahoo Singapore News

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

FILE PHOTO: The WHO logo is pictured at the entrance of its headquarters in Geneva

(Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) updated its guidance on Friday to recommend that governments ask people wear fabric face masks in public places to curb the spread of the pandemic COVID-19 disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Here are some details on the new advice:

WHY THE CHANGE?

- The WHO says the widespread use of face masks or coverings by the general public is still not yet supported by high quality or direct scientific evidence.

- But it says a growing amount of observational evidence from several countries that have ordered or recommended the wearing of masks, as well as the difficulty of social distancing in many settings, is enough for it to change its advice.

WHEN SHOULD YOU WEAR A MASK?

The WHO recommends the wearing of non-medical masks by:

- Everyone in public settings such as stores, at work, social or mass gatherings, and in closed settings such as schools or places of worship.

- People living in cramped conditions, such as in refugee camps or slums.

- On public transport.

WHAT KIND OF MASK?

Because of the risk of diverting critical resources from health workers, the WHO says medical masks should be reserved for healthcare professionals and people in at-risk groups. Everyone else should use what it terms non-medical or fabric masks. Here is some of its advice on mask choice:

- Choose materials that capture droplets but remain easy to breathe through.

- Avoid stretchy materials, because stretching may increase pore sizes, and preferably use a fabric that can be washed at 60C (140F) or higher.

- A minimum of three layers is needed, including an absorbent inner layer, touching the mouth, and a synthetic outer layer that does not easily absorb water.

- Wash frequently, at the highest temperature possible, and don't share.

India's virus cases surge by almost 10000 - Cessnock Advertiser

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

India's Health Ministry has reported another record spike in new coronavirus cases - more than 9800 in the past 24 hours.

India's total number of confirmed cases stands at 226,770 with 6348 deaths, 273 of them in the past 24 hours, the ministry said on Friday. The ministry says the overall rate of recovery for coronavirus patients is around 48 per cent.

There has been a surge in infections in rural areas with the return of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who had left cities and towns after losing their jobs due to a nationwide lockdown.

The more than two-month-old lockdown is largely being enforced only in high-risk areas, known as containment zones.

The government has partially restored train service and domestic flights and allowed the reopening of shops and manufacturing.

E-commerce companies have started to deliver goods, including those considered non-essential, to places outside containment zones.

Metro service and schools and colleges, however, remain closed nationwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, announced India was contributing $15 million to an international vaccine alliance.

Viral Videos From Protests Fuel Broader Debate Over Policing - The Wall Street Journal

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:47 PM PDT

An elderly man was confronted by police during a protest Thursday evening in Buffalo.

The Buffalo Police Department suspended without pay two officers seen on camera knocking down a 75-year-old man during a protest, in what was the latest in a string of videos from recent demonstrations that have inflamed the debate over law-enforcement tactics.

The local news footage from Buffalo shows the man approach two officers while apparently saying something. One officer shoves the man, who falls backward and strikes his head on the pavement. Blood pools by his head as police walk by. The incident occurred Thursday evening, beyond the city's curfew, according to Mayor Byron W. Brown.

Largely peaceful marches took place on the 10th night of protests following the killing of George Floyd, after a memorial in Minneapolis. In Buffalo, two police officers were suspended without pay after a video showed them knocking down an elderly man. Photo: Chandan Khanna/AFP via Getty Images

On Friday, 57 members of the Buffalo Police Department resigned from the unit assigned to mass gatherings, according to city and union officials. Buffalo Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood confirmed the resignations in a statement; a union official said the officers were protesting the city's decision to suspend the two officers involved in the pushing incident.

The Buffalo episode was the latest captured by civilian cellphones or news cameras during nationwide demonstrations to protest the death of George Floyd. In Philadelphia, authorities are charging a police officer recorded while striking a man in the head with a baton. Videos have also shown a police car in Los Angeles striking two pedestrians and multiple incidents of people injured by rubber bullets.

For critics sharing videos on social media, they are proof-positive of out-of-control policing.

"You see them pushing this 75-year-old man down and his head busts on the ground, and they don't even stop and help?" said Todd Rutherford, an African-American lawyer who represented a bystander who filmed a 2015 fatal police shooting in North Charleston, S.C. "It didn't surprise me at all. We've been seeing this all our lives."

Police defenders, including those highly critical of the Minneapolis policemen now charged in Mr. Floyd's death, say officers are often responding after being antagonized and attacked. Police are also trying to protect neighborhoods from looting and property damage that has occurred in many cities in situations where they are vastly outnumbered.

"I've seen great restraint being used mostly, in 99% of the cases," said Ed Davis, a former Boston police commissioner. "There have been cases where police have done things that look like an overreaction."

"Here's the problem: we're still recruiting our officers from the human race," Mr. Davis said.

Police are under intense scrutiny after Mr. Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed on May 25 after officers arrested him for allegedly trying to pass off a counterfeit $20 bill. Video that circulated widely on social media showed a white police officer with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck as he pleaded for mercy and said he couldn't breathe.

Police in Manhattan took up position Thursday after the evening curfew took effect.

The civilian recording of the Memorial Day incident has already helped prompt police reforms.

The Minneapolis city council said Friday that it would ban police chokeholds and require officers to immediately report and intervene in any unauthorized uses of force by fellow officers.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday also called for law enforcement in his state to stop using and teaching the type of hold used on Mr. Floyd.

Under the Minneapolis agreement, which the state said needs a judge's approval, the city would also require the Minneapolis police chief to sign off on crowd-control weapons during demonstrations. It would increase transparency on policy disciplinary decisions and allow body-camera footage to be audited by the state's civil-rights department.

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said he would continue to work on improving public trust and changing his department's culture. "I will be bringing forth substantive policy changes," he said.

"We are moving quickly to create substantive change," Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said.

Since Mr. Floyd's death, protesters typically using cellphones have circulated hundreds of videos showing clashes between the police and demonstrators, often showing officers shoving, kicking, or punching protesters.

T. Greg Doucette, a Durham, N.C., lawyer has logged more than 300 videos of such clashes on Twitter since the protests began a week ago.

Mr. Doucette, a white Republican, said he is angry that police culture has resisted change despite the attention videos of aggressive tactics have drawn since the Black Lives Matter movement started in 2014. "When the government violates your rights, that's supposed to be one of the things we actually care about," he said.

Critics cite similar actions by police during recent demonstrations, from an officer on horseback knocking over a protester in Houston, to the pepper-spraying of elected officials in Columbus, Ohio, who tried to intervene when a police officer shoved a protester to the ground.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Friday a police staff inspector is facing aggravated assault and other charges for a video showing him hitting a 21-year-old man on his head with a baton during a tense confrontation with demonstrators on Monday. The man sustained a large head wound that required sutures and stitches, Mr. Krasner said.

Jonathan Feinberg, an attorney for the man who was struck, called the incident "a brazen incident of misconduct" by police. The local Fraternal Order of Police lodge called the allegations baseless while saying it would vigorously defend the officer in question. He had only had milliseconds to make a decision during a volatile and chaotic situation, the lodge said.

Seattle's police chief said late Friday that the department would suspend the use of tear gas for 30 days, while internal and external watchdog groups reviewed policies on its use.

Maria Haberfeld, an expert on police training at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said that in many of these videos, officers are doing what they were taught: asserting their authority first by mere physical presence, then voice commands, and pushing back when someone advances at them.

"In Buffalo, the officers did what they were trained to do," she said. "It is incorrect to say the man posed no threat because of his age."

" "Here's the problem: we're still recruiting our officers from the human race." "

— Ed Davis, former Boston police commissioner

John Evans, president of the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, which represents officers, called the two officers' suspensions baffling and said they were executing an order to clear the area. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, a Democrat, said he was "exceptionally disappointed" by news that the officers had resigned from the SWAT-like detail "because it indicates to me that they did not see anything wrong with the actions."

Mr. Lockwood, the police commissioner, said that while the officers had removed themselves from the detail they hadn't actually resigned from the police force.

More than 300 officers have been injured in the past week in New York alone, Ms. Haberfeld said. Officers nationwide have seen footage of counterparts in other cities being shot and getting hit with Molotov cocktails or bricks, so naturally they are on high alert for their own safety, she added.

"It absolutely creates a perception that they are at war and when you are at war, not everything goes by the book," she said.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association, representing the 78 largest police departments in the U.S. and Canada, has tweeted videos of officers taking a knee with protesters. New York's police commissioner, Dermot Shea, tweeted a video showing his officers coming across caches of bricks hidden by protesters and another of officers being struck with rocks and sticks in the back of the head.

Some police are also wielding video to give greater context to large, fast-moving events.

On Thursday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina had a staff member video a three-hour protest and share it on Facebook Live. The video gives a sense of a largely peaceful evening, with one bicycle cop heard saying, "I could do this every single night like this. No one threw anything. They got their message across…that's what it's all about."

In some instances, including in Buffalo, police departments are investigating or taking swift action in response to videos.

The NYPD has said it is investigating at least seven cases of alleged police misconduct that have surfaced since demonstrations erupted. Mr. Shea said disciplinary action would result and officers would be suspended in some cases.

On Friday night, Mr. Shea said two officers had been suspended without pay and face disciplinary action over alleged misconduct during protests in Brooklyn. Video of the incidents were shared on social media.

One officer is seen in a video on May 30 pulling down a protester's mask and pepper spraying him, according to Mr. Shea. The other officer is seen on video pushing a woman to the ground in Brooklyn on May 29, Mr. Shea said. The officer's supervisor on the scene will also be transferred, according to the commissioner.

Mr. Shea called both incidents "disturbing."

"While the investigations have to play out, based on the severity of what we saw, it is appropriate and necessary to assure the public that there will be transparency during the disciplinary process," he said.

Roma confident of completing Pedro deal as talks heat up - Goal.com

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:42 PM PDT

Pedro is set to depart Chelsea in the summer with Roma most likely to sign the winger on a free transfer, Goal can confirm.

Discussions between the 32-year-old and the Serie A side began in April with the dialogue getting close to a conclusion in the last 48 hours.

The Spain international's contract at Stamford Bridge will expire at the end of the season, forcing him to consider his future.

Article continues below

Serie A giants Juventus have also shown interest in Pedro, while La Liga trio Sevilla, Valencia and Real Betis have been in the race, according to the Spanish press.

Pedro has made 201 appearances and scored 43 goals for Chelsea since joining from Barcelona in 2015.

He also collected Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League winners' medals, to add to the three Champions League trophies and five La Liga championships he won at Camp Nou.

Injuries have restricted Pedro's current season with Chelsea to only 18 matches and two goals across all competitions.

With the Blues adding Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech to their squad in recent seasons, and with the emergence of English talent Callum Hudson-Odoi, Pedro would likely be pushed down the pecking order under Frank Lampard if he stayed in London.

Pedro would join several Premier League players to make the move to Rome in recent seasons, including Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Davide Zappacosta.

The former Blaugrana star has also been previously been linked with a move to MLS and former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley feels he could be a good addition for the North American competition.

"I think he's good enough to play at a reasonable level, wherever that may be. At the end of the day, Chelsea are looking for younger players," Burley told ESPN FC .

"They've got a number of players they can select in similar positions [to Pedro].

"So I don't think there's any doubt that he'll be one of the players who will be moving on.

"The other side of the coin is that he's had a pretty lucky career with injuries, especially recently unless my memory serves me wrong.

"He still looks very fit and nimble and fast, which is a big attribute of his.

"When you look at Pedro, you don't look at someone who has a bad attitude, you see someone who works hard and is a team player.

"When you put all those things together, he would be a very good signing for someone in Major League Soccer.

"Although he's turning 33, he's still got a lot to offer, and he's a very hard-working player."

I'm happy I didn't join Barcelona, says PSG star Di Maria - Goal

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:42 PM PDT

Angel Di Maria says he is happy he did not join Barcelona when they tried to buy him from Paris Saint-Germain three years ago.

The Argentine winger joined PSG from Manchester United in 2015 but was linked to the Spanish outfit after Neymar moved in the opposite direction in a world record deal in 2017.

The Catalan side ended up signing Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund after their efforts to sign Di Maria collapsed and the former Real Madrid attacker is glad the club decided not to sell him.

"I was very happy in Paris, but people at the club at the time told me some things, which turned out to be lies in the end," he told L'Equipe.

"Barca tried to get me to come. The two clubs discussed it, but PSG did not want to sell me and it ended there.

"These lies annoyed me a lot but, in the end, not leaving was a good thing because I am very happy in Paris today."

The 32-year-old's contract expires in 2021, but he hinted that he will extend his deal as he wants to see out the remainder of his career with PSG.

"I want to end my career in Europe with PSG is the only thing I want and have in mind," he added.

"I'm happy here, my family is too. As for the rest, I don't know for the moment. No discussions have been initiated and this is not my intention at this time. I want to focus on the field, the rest will come later."

Di Maria has won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles as well as the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue three times each during his time with PSG.

His Champions League triumph came during his time at Real Madrid, but he hopes to claim the European crown with his current side before he departs.

"It would be amazing to win it again. Not only to win the trophy, but because of the affection I have for the club and for its supporters," he said.

Article continues below

"I have the feeling that over the past two seasons, I have won the respect of the supporters.

"Mentally, it changed a lot when I felt that they encouraged me more, that they sang for me. It gave me a lot of strength, I try to thank them for what I do on the field.

"If I could bring them the Champions LEague before leaving, it would be perfect to end our story."

Esper and Milley refuse to testify about military's role in policing protests, source says - CNN

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:09 PM PDT

An informal briefing for lawmakers by Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy was also canceled for Friday, the aide said.
Rep. Adam Smith, the Democratic chairman of the House panel, called on Esper and Milley to appear in person before the committee "to explain this domestic engagement to the American people" this week, emphasizing that "the fate of our democracy depends on how we navigate this time of crisis."
Pentagon chief on shaky ground with White House after breaking with Trump over protest response
"At a time when our nation is hurting the President continues to forgo any effort to calm tensions, as we had all hoped he would. Instead he used force to remove peaceful protesters to stage a photo opportunity. Instead of taking a moment of silence in front of the historic St Johns' Episcopal Church to pray for the lives lost he gathered his cronies to take a picture. Instead of doing the right thing, he once again did the absolute wrong thing," Smith said in a statement Wednesday.
"I have serious concerns about using military forces to respond to protestors. The role of the U.S. military in domestic U.S. law enforcement is limited by law. It must not be used in violation of those limits and I see little evidence that President Trump understands this fundamental premise," he added. "I remain gravely concerned about the President Trump's seemingly autocratic rule and how it affects the judgment of our military leadership."
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. Politico was first to report Esper and Milley's refusal to appear before the committee next week.
The prominent former military leaders who have criticized Trump's actions over protests
Smith also wrote to Esper and Milley on Wednesday requesting written answers to several questions about the Pentagons potential plans to use active duty forces for law enforcement purposes. The deadline for those responses is June 9.
The same House aide told CNN Friday that the committee intends to continue to request that both Esper and Milley testify before lawmakers in person but, as of now, have received no indication from the Pentagon that they are working to schedule a hearing for a later date.
Asked Tuesday if he had confidence in Esper, Smith, said he "can't really answer that question at this point" until he speaks with the defense secretary, which he had not done yet despite requesting a conversation with him.

Esper on shaky ground

CNN reported Wednesday that Esper is on shaky ground with the White House after saying he does not support using active duty troops to quell the large-scale protests across the US and those forces should only be used in a law enforcement role as a last resort.
Speaking from the Pentagon briefing room podium, Esper noted that "we are not in one of those situations now," distancing himself from President Donald Trump's recent threat to deploy the military to enforce order.
"The option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act," he told reporters. Esper also distanced himself from a maligned photo-op outside St. John's Church.
Wednesday's press briefing by Esper went over poorly at the White House, where his standing was already viewed to be tenuous, multiple people familiar with the matter said.
Esper's comments Wednesday came after defense officials told CNN this week that there was deep and growing discomfort among some in the Pentagon even before Trump announced Monday that he is ready to deploy active duty forces if local leaders fail to ramp up enforcement efforts.
As gas wafted through the air in Lafayette Park across from the White House, Trump announced from the Rose Garden that if state or city leaders refuse "to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents," he will invoke the Insurrection Act, an 1807 law that allows a president to deploy the US military to suppress civil disorder.
Esper orders remainder of active duty troops in Washington region back to home base
On Friday, Esper ordered that active duty troops who were moved to the Washington DC area should return to their home base of Fort Drum in New York, Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said.
On Thursday, Esper ordered about 700 of the 1,600 active duty troops who were brought to the Washington region on Monday back to Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Friday's order to the New York-based troops removes almost all the active duty presence brought in to bolster law enforcement. The troops had been positioned around Washington on "heightened alert status" to allow for their quick deployment amid nationwide protests.
McCarthy said that a small active duty component of the "Old Guard" based in Arlington, Virginia, will remain on stand-by for assistance, but that he hopes they will be taken off alert status this weekend. That will be contingent on protests in the capital continuing to be peaceful, McCarthy added.

今エンターテインメント企業がすべきこと: フロイドの死についての抗議行動に寄せて(ギズモード・ジャパン) - Yahoo!ニュース

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:34 PM PDT

Four new mobile coronavirus testing sites announced for Bergen County - NorthJersey.com

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Four new mobile coronavirus testing sites will be available in Bergen County starting on June 8, county officials said.

The testing sites, which will be in Franklin Lakes, Leonia, Edgewater and Saddle Brook, are the latest locations in the effort to get Bergen County residents and employees tested for free.

"The overwhelming response I have seen at these sites demonstrates the continued need for expanded access to COVID-19 testing across our county, state, and nation," Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco said in a statement.

Coronavirus NJ: A timeline of events from first cases to mass casualties to the reopening

Loved and Lost: Jack Ferber was passionate about family, community and sports

Guidance: Here's what nonessential retail stores need to do if they want to reopen on June 15

The test sites, which will operate on a first-come-first-serve basis, will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. for first responders who live or work in the county and from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to any county resident, the statement said.

Here are the dates and locations for the tests, barring cancellations due to weather.

  • June 8 - Franklin Lakes Community Center, 1 Vichiconti Way, Franklin Lakes
  • June 10 - 302 Beechwood Place, Leonia
  • June 11 -  Veterans Field Park, 1057-1165 River Road, Edgewater
  • June 12 - 55 Mayhill St., Saddle Brook

Those receiving a test will need a valid form of identification showing that they either live or work in the county, the statement said. The statement asked that those receiving the saliva test avoid eating, drinking, smoking and chewing gum 30 minutes before the test.

Those interested can choose to get a COVID-19 saliva test or an antibody test. Antibody tests will be limited to 100 tests per day and must be a first responder or a county resident with documentation of a positive coronavirus test.

As of June 5, there were 162,530 reported cases in the state with nearly 12,000 deaths, according to data provided by State health officials.

Why Making Money Shouldn't Be Your Only Goal in Life - Greenwich Time

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:42 PM PDT

"Money can't buy happiness." We've all heard this sentence (and others like it) countless times before, seen it printed on motivational posters and ascribed to various celebrities and philosophers. But do any of us truly, genuinely believe it?

For most people, the answer is a resounding no. In simple and obvious ways, we all need money for everything from fulfilling basic needs necessary for survival to making our wildest dreams come true.

Related: 9 Success Habits of Wealthy People That Cost Nothing

But making money should not be the one overarching goal in life, overshadowing everything else we have going on.

Money is a means to an end

When most people visualize a seven-, eight- or even nine-figure net worth, they aren't thinking of the money itself: The real value of money is what you can do with it. In truth, money itself is rarely the end goal.

We need money to make many of our objectives a reality. Whether these objectives are of the real estate kind, material goods, or experiences — like travelling the world — money is going to be a necessary factor for making them happen.

When people talk of money being a means to an end rather than an end goal, this is the underlying idea. We shouldn't be focusing solely on the act of making profits, but also on using these assets to shape our lives and others in ways that make us happier and more fulfilled. Making a large amount of money takes an enormous amount of effort for most of us – but doing so with a specific intention in mind will make the road to achieving our goals more fulfilling.

Life is short

It's a cliché, but we all know it's true. Though we do our best to ignore it, the truth is that our lives could be cut short at any moment, as could those of our loved ones.

It's important to have goals in life and plans for the future, money-related or otherwise, but this can't prevent us from living in the present. Not all dreams and goals have to be set somewhere far off in the distant future for "when I'm rich," "when I'm CEO" or "when I've retired." Setting the goal of enjoying the present on your way to the future won't distract you from working towards what you want to achieve.

For the same reason, amassing money for the sake of amassing money will not bring you life satisfaction in itself. You should be fully aware of the health of your finances and have a hefty reserve of funds, but remember to take advantage of it while you can. Even if you're saving up for a larger expenditure, like a retirement fund or a new house, don't be afraid to spend money on things you want and experiences that enrich your life, here and now.

Beware of burnout

Burnout is considered to be an occupational phenomenon – it refers to a state of physical, mental, and/or emotional exhaustion caused specifically by work-related stress. It's a problem common and serious enough to have earned an entry in the International Classification of Diseases. A 2020 survey found that nearly two-thirds of full-time workers are dealing with burnout at some point while at work.

Of course burnout might be caused by factors other than excessive focus on income: Many jobs, such as healthcare or law enforcement, involve intense psychological pressure that could be overwhelming. But if your sole focus in life is to make more money, you run the risk of losing regard for your health and wellbeing, eventually becoming unable to continue your pursuit.

Related: 4 Science-Backed Ways to Prevent Burnout

Introducing other goals into your life – unrelated to making money – will, at the very least, give you some breathing space and a way to unwind and find satisfaction in other areas of your life. Exercise goals, for instance, will put you in better shape – all while providing a release from work-related stress. Working towards family and relationship goals will ease the emotional tension you build up at work.

It's important to ensure that we have something in our lives that's just as important as our businesses or careers so that there's at least one more source of positive affirmation. Values and goals unrelated to money-making provide healthy ways of dealing with the stresses and pressures of our professional lives, lowering the risk of burnout and preventing us from turning to damaging coping mechanisms like drugs or alcohol.

And at the end of the day, even at the most practical level, you'll want to be in a good physical and mental shape to take advantage of the opportunities that the money you've earned can give you. If you drive yourself into a rut trying constantly to maximize your income, you won't be able to enjoy the rewards.

Related: 7 Ways to Get From Burnout to Balance

Happiness can only come from the fulfilment of what we need and want. The problem is that we usually don't know what we want or need. We often think that we do, but in reality we may have our priorities wrong. With that said, does money make you happy? My answer is yes to some extent — money can buy freedom and experiences, which in turn lead to happiness.

In a world that is riddled with noise and overtaken in a helpless rat race to nowhere, the only chance to rediscover happiness is to cultivate meaning. Your privileges, your pursuits, your achievements, your endowments, your experiences, your expectations, your very existence — these should all make you ponder life's most persistent question: What meaning are you building with them?

FC Dallas' Gonzalez suspended due to alleged domestic abuse incidents - Goal

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:42 PM PDT

MLS has announced that FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez has been suspended following alleged incidents of domestic abuse.

The league is conducting an investigation into the accusations after a report was recently made to the Frisco Police Department.

While those investigations are ongoing, Gonzalez will undergo an assessment by doctors and will be ineligible to join FC Dallas for any team activities.

"FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez has been suspended by Major League Soccer following a report made to the Frisco Police Department alleging incidents of domestic abuse," the league said in a statement.

"MLS is conducting an independent investigation into the matter and will remain in close communication with FC Dallas, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Association throughout the process.

"The player proactively submitted to, and is currently undergoing, an assessment by Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) doctors. Gonzalez will not be eligible to participate in any team activity until the assessment is complete, he is cleared for participation by the SABH Program doctors, and Major League Soccer completes its investigation.

"MLS will not have further comment on this matter until the conclusion of the League's investigation."

FC Dallas released a statement of their own, with the club stating that it will cooperatively work alongside MLS as the process plays out.

"Earlier this week, we learned of allegations involving goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez," read FC Dallas' statement.

"FC Dallas takes these matters extremely seriously and fully supports the league's swift action to suspend the player while an investigation takes place. We continue to work closely with Major League Soccer regarding this.

"As this is an ongoing investigation, FC Dallas will not have further comment at this time."

Gonzalez has been with FC Dallas since 2011, having signed his first professional deal as a homegrown player in 2015.

Article continues below

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has been a fixture in net since becoming the full-time starter in 2017, having started a total of 101 regular season matches during his career.

Gonzalez, who started 32 matches last season, was in goal for each of FC Dallas' two matches prior to the league's shutdown due to the coronavirus.

MLS recently approved a plan to allow teams to return to full training with one eye on an upcoming tournament to be held in Orlando.

Trump administration plans to cut US troops in Germany - CNN

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT

The official said that the exact size of the reduction has not been decided but a cut of 9,500 is the current tentative planning figure. The formal order to begin moving troops has yet to be given but is expected soon.
There are approximately 34,000 US troops stationed in Germany.
A spokesman for the Pentagon referred CNN to the National Security Council, which has not responded to the request for comment.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the expected drawdown.
President Donald Trump has long criticized Germany over a range of issues, particularly Berlin's failure to meet the target of 2% of GDP spending on defense that is recommended by NATO.
Pentagon commanders drawing up options for early Afghanistan troop withdrawal
While defense officials had weighed moving some forces from Germany in the past, several US and NATO officials told CNN that the size and timing of the reduction were unexpected.
NATO referred questions about the reduction to the US government.
The US military has stationed forces in Germany since the end of the Second World War and their presence there on the front lines of the Cold War helped deter the Soviet Union from mounting an attack on NATO members.
While the number of US troops in Germany had decreased in recent years, US bases in the country continue to be used by the military due to their strategic location and the presence of US defense infrastructure such as air bases and medical facilities.

Withdrawal would be a blow to NATO

If the troops directed to leave Germany are removed from Europe entirely, the drawdown could be seen as a major blow to solidarity within the NATO alliance as many member countries continue to express concerns about the threat posed by Russia, which has used military force against Ukraine in recent years.
The top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee slammed news of the planned drawdown, calling it "petty and preposterous" and a "favor" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"This order is petty and preposterous. It's another favor to Putin and another leadership failure by this administration that further strains relations with our allies," Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island told CNN in a statement.
Many European allies have openly questioned Trump's commitment to NATO which he labeled obsolete during his campaign for the presidency.
While Trump has since changed his tone, claiming credit for a member countries boosting their defense spending, he has continued to slam Germany.
The prominent former military leaders who have criticized Trump's actions over protests
While NATO officials have said that Trump's pressure has contributed to the growth in defense spending, they had also previously pointed to an increase in US military forces in Europe as indicative of Washington's continued commitment to the alliance, a narrative that a major reduction from Germany could undermine.
Germany recently agreed to pay a greater share of NATO's direct budget, allowing the US to reduce its contribution.
It is possible that any troops removed from Germany could be repositioned in Poland as Warsaw has long sought an increase in the number of US personnel stationed there, with Poland's President offering to name a new US Base in Poland Ft. Trump.
Senior Trump administration officials have in the past suggested moving US troops from Germany to Poland due to Berlin's failure to meet the 2% target.
"Poland meets its 2% of GDP spending obligation towards NATO. Germany does not. We would welcome American troops in Germany to come to Poland," the US ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, wrote on Twitter in August.
While the Pentagon has increased the number of US troops in Poland in recent years, the majority of those personnel are designated rotational forces.

Civil Rights Groups, Black Lives Matter Sue Trump Administration Over Protest Violence - KPBS

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT

Photo caption:

Civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Trump administration and federal law enforcement agencies, saying they violated the constitutional rights of demonstrators who were violently evacuated out of a park Monday to clear the path for a photo op by President Trump.

Court documents accuse officers of conducting a coordinated and "unprovoked charge into a crowd of demonstrators" who had gathered across from the White House in Lafayette Park to protest the killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police, as well as broader systemic injustices perpetrated by law enforcement against black people in the United States.

"What happened to our members Monday evening, here in the nation's capital, was an affront to all our rights," said April Goggans, Core Organizer of Black Lives Matter D.C., the lead plaintiff in the case.

As Trump held a press conference in the Rose Garden on Monday afternoon, he threatened to deploy the military to cities he said were besieged by violent protesters, saying the armed forces would "quickly solve the problem for them."

At the same time, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, D.C. National Guard, and U.S. Military Police who had been stationed across the street, deployed chemical irritants and shot rubber bullets to disperse what had been a peaceful protest. The confrontation took place well before the Washington, D.C., curfew of 7 p.m. ET.

At the conclusion of Trump's news conference, he walked from the White House to St. John's Church on the opposite side of the park, where he posed briefly for photographers, holding a Bible. He was accompanied by Attorney General William Barr among others.

The basement of the historic church was damaged in a fire Sunday night.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on behalf of Black Lives Matter D.C., and individual protesters who were in Lafayette Park on Monday evening. It seeks an order barring officials, including Barr and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper from repeating the unlawful activities, and damages for the injuries plaintiffs sustained.

"Across the country, law enforcement armed with military weaponry are responding with violence to people who are protesting police brutality," said Ben Wizner, director of the ACLU's Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project.

"The First Amendment right to protest is under attack, and we will not let this go unanswered. This is the first of many lawsuits the ACLU intends to file across the country in response to police brutality against protesters," Wizner added.

Similar lawsuits are being filed in response to police attacks against journalists covering demonstrations across the country in recent days.

'The troops hate it': John Kelly criticizes Trump threat to use armed forces to quell protests - CNBC

WASHINGTON — Former White House chief of staff John Kelly said Friday that he did not agree with President Donald Trump's threat to deploy active-duty U.S. military as the nation braced for another week of planned protests over the death of George Floyd.

"The troops hate it, they don't see it as their job, they don't want to be used in that way," Kelly told Anthony Scaramucci, former White House communications director, during a livestreamed interview. "Now, natural disasters are a different story, hurricanes, earthquakes, we lean forward in the U.S. military to help," he added, saying that the civil unrest in the United States are "domestic issues."

Kelly, who also served as the secretary of Homeland Security in the Trump administration, reiterated the importance of preserving the Department of Defense's apolitical nature.

"We have always attempted to be apolitical," explained Kelly, a retired four-star Marine Corps general. "And we think that's important because the U.S. military serves the nation, all of its people, not a party, not a political persuasion, not an individual."

Kelly's comments come as Secretary of Defense Mark Esper faces scrutiny for referring to American cities as a "battle space" and for participating in a widely criticized photo in front of a historic church.

"I think we need to look harder at who we elect and I think we should start, all of us, regardless of what our views are of politics, I think we should look at people running for office and put them through the filter, what is their character like, what are their ethics and if elected, are they willing to represent all of their constituents and not just their base," Kelly said.

On Friday D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser asked for the withdrawal of "all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence" from the city as protests over Floyd's death continued.

"The deployment of federal law enforcement personnel and equipment are inflaming demonstrators and adding to the grievances of those who, by and large, are peacefully protesting for change and reforms to the racist and broken systems that are killing Black Americans," Bowser said in a letter to Trump.

Bowser also authorized the painting of the message "Black Lives Matter" in giant yellow letters down 16th Street in Washington, the site of many demonstrations.

'I agree with Mattis'

Kelly's remarks come on the heels of a scathing statement from James Mattis, former secretary of Defense.

Mattis, who was Trump's first Defense secretary, broke his near three-year silence and ripped into his former boss by saying, he "watched this week's unfolding events, angry and appalled."

"Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us," Mattis wrote in a statement published by The Atlantic.

"We must reject any thinking of our cities as a 'battlespace' that our uniformed military is called upon to 'dominate,'" Mattis explained.

"Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part."

"I agree with Mattis," Kelly said when asked about the statement made by his fellow Marine Corps general.

"The partisanship has gotten out of hand, the tribal thing has gotten out of hand, we don't look at each other as fellow Americans it seems anymore we look at each other as opponents, we don't talk to each other anymore, we yell at each other," Kelly said.

Mattis also took issue with a Monday night incident in which protesters were forcibly cleared from Lafayette Square, a small park in front of the president's residence.

"The words 'Equal Justice Under Law' are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind," Mattis wrote.

Trump walked through the square with several members of his Cabinet to stand in front of St. John's Church while holding a Bible and posing for photographs. He later motioned to members of his Cabinet to join him for more pictures.

Esper, who has previously said he would preserve the U.S. military's apolitical nature, entered the frame and stood alongside Trump for the photo op.

In a Tuesday night interview with NBC News, Esper said, "I didn't know where I was going" when asked about the highly criticized photo opportunity. "I thought I was going to do two things: to see some damage and to talk to the troops."

When asked about the incident, Kelly said he would have advised the president to not follow through with the planned photo.

"I would have recommended against it," he said.

Correction: John Kelly is a retired four-star Marine Corps general. An earlier version misstated his status.

Milwaukee man accused of trying to burn mobile phone store - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

MILWAUKEE — Federal prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old Milwaukee man with trying to set a mobile phone store on fire with a Molotov cocktail during unrest in Milwaukee following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Tyshaun Smith faces federal counts of attempted arson and possession of a destructive device.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to a Boost Mobile late Sunday. When officers arrived, they saw three men standing outside a broken window.

The Journal Sentinel reports authorities allege Smith was holding what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail —already burning — and threw it inside the store before the three men fled.

Smith fell. When police arrested him, they noticed his clothing smelled of gasoline and he had possession of a loaded handgun. Police were able to extinguish the burning Molotov cocktail in the store and recover the device.

Smith later told investigators he noticed on Facebook that rioting was going on, that he became enraged and felt he had to do something. He said he threw the Molotov cocktail into the store "because he wanted to stand for something."

It was not immediately known if Smith had an attorney who could comment for him.

Floyd, a handcuffed black man, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a white police officer pressed his knee on Floyd's neck, ignoring his "I can't breathe" cries. Floyd's death has sparked protests around the nation and the world.
