Protests Continue In Cities Across The Country Saturday - NPR Posted: 07 Jun 2020 12:08 AM PDT The flame ignited by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis still burned bright in cities across the country Saturday as largely peaceful anti-police brutality and Black Lives Matter protests continued with some of their biggest crowds yet. In addition to the massive crowds that gathered in Washington, protesters in cities from Philadelphia to San Francisco are calling for racial justice and pressuring local officials to defund police departments in the second weekend of demonstrations since Floyd's death. New York City Protests sprawled across New York City Saturday as thousands gathered from Manhattan to Brooklyn to demand an end to police brutality. One protest, called The March for Stolen Lives and Looted Dreams, marched more than 100 blocks from 110th & Central Park West to Washington Square Park, convening thousands to demand that Mayor Bill De Blasio defund the New York Police Department, according to a Facebook event page for the demonstration. De Blasio has been criticized for continuing the city's curfew and standing behind police actions, even as videos of police cars running over protesters sparked outrage online. "Time after time, these cops get away with it for the most part, so we want some change," one protester called Robel, who would only identify himself by his first name for fear of retaliation, told NPR. Minneapolis The city where George Floyd died at the hands of police saw another day of protests Saturday, as thousands gathered in a peaceful rally to demand the defunding of the Minneapolis Police Department. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar spoke at the rally, saying diversity training is not enough to erase systemic racism in policing. "We've all seen what happens when good people of good conscience say, 'Let's invest in diversity training.' Maybe if we teach them that just because I am a different color and a different gender, maybe they'll treat me kinder," Omar said. "Let's try to explain our humanity and make them see us as dignified people. Maybe that will stop them from killing us."
Also Saturday, health care providers in the Minneapolis "twin city" of St. Paul observed a socially distant sit-in to protest racial discrimination in health care, Minnesota Public Radio reported. Philadelphia Philadelphia saw its largest protests yet Saturday, when thousands of demonstrators marched past various city landmarks in peaceful rallies against police brutality. More than 14,000 responded to a Facebook event page for a march from the iconic Philadelphia Art Museum to City Hall organized by the city's branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Organizers demanded that Mayor Jim Kenney and the city council defund the Philadelphia police and that Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw resign, according to the event description. Those demands come after widespread backlash to videos of Philadelphia police unleashing tear gas on protesters cornered on a highway during a demonstration Monday, member station WHYY reported. Both Police Commissioner Outlaw and Mayor Kenney kneeled with protesters at Saturday demonstrations, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, but the mayor has not called off the city's curfew, which resumed Saturday night at 8 p.m. and will last until 6 a.m. Sunday morning.
Chicago Demonstrators in Chicago gathered in the city's Union Park for a rally against police brutality that led into a march on the city's West Side, The Associated Press reported. Estimates from police and organizers put the rally's turnout between 20,000 and 30,000 people. Police said Saturday afternoon there had been no arrests at the peaceful protest, The Washington Post reported. Mayor Lori Lightfoot had previously shut down parts of the city's Lake Shore Drive to facilitate protests and set a 9 p.m. curfew for the city, the Chicago Tribune reported. The Union Park rally came just after the Chicago Teachers Union held a march with students and other organizations to announce its support of the effort to remove police officers from schools. Districts in several other cities, including including in Minneapolis and Portland, have already moved to cut ties with police (often called "resource officers") in schools. San Francisco Thousands of Black Lives Matter protesters marched across San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge Saturday, stretching the length of the 1.7-mile landmark and eventually moving into the driving lanes to stop traffic. Several Bay Area labor unions also joined to host a racial justice march called "Taking A Knee For Change" that convened in San Francisco's Candlestick Park, once home to the city's football team, the 49ers. The march, though dedicated to the recently killed George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and and Ahmaud Arbery, was also an homage to the NFL racial justice protests started by then-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, said organizers. "We are taking a knee to amplify the voice of oppressed people just like Colin did," said union member Derrick Boutte in a statement, according to member station KQED. Smaller Towns & Cities Though large cities have seen more consistent protests with greater turnout, peaceful demonstrations also continue in America's smaller cities and towns. More than one thousand protesters gathered in Saginaw, Mich., a city of less than 50,000 for a Black Lives Matter rally Saturday, according to MLive. Protests against Floyd's death also convened today in Elizabethtown, Penn., a borough of fewer than 12,000 residents, PennLive reported. In Meridian, a small Mississippi city, NBC affiliate WLBT reported that hundreds joined a peaceful march against police brutality and racial injustice, holding signs and chanting, "I can't breathe, breathe through me, justice and peace, we will see." According to a USA Today protest tracker, there have been demonstrations in response to George Floyd's death in all 50 states. NPR's Brian Mann and Leila Fadel contributed to this report. Viral Facebook video launches wheelchair coat company - Crain's Detroit Business Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:47 PM PDT In the winter of 2017, Zoey Harrison went viral. She was 9, then, and used a motorized wheelchair to get around. At school, it took her caregivers so much time in the winter to get her coat on, get her in her chair and wrap her legs in blankets that by the time they were done, recess was nearly over. One day, she asked her mother, Jennifer, if she could make her something so getting ready for recess was quicker. "'Mommy, will you make me something that keeps me warm at recess? My blankets fall and don't stay tucked in, so cold air hits me'" Jennifer recalled. The result is something Jennifer called a wheelchair bodycoat. Cutting two coats into pieces, she sewed a full length, insulated body wrap that could be affixed to Jennifer's wheelchair. When it came time for recess, she could just be put into the body wrap and be out in the cold in no time. But the paraprofessional at the school who worked with Zoey couldn't figure out how it worked. They were supposed to attach the body wrap to the chair first, then place Zoey in it and zip it over her. But they were putting her in it first, then trying to attach it to the chair. Doctors didn't think Zoey was going to survive when she was born with numerous medical conditions, including cerebral palsy, a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia and a brain condition called periventricular leukomalacia. The Harrisons adopted Zoey when she was 1 year old. The Harrisons have 11 children, nine of them adopted. "She loves life, and of course she has many bad moments with having multiple health issues, but despite that she lives up every good moment to the max," said Jennifer. "She has no filter, is spunky, smart and one of the most funny, faithful persons I have ever met." Jennifer filmed a brief tutorial on how the coat works on her smartphone, but the file was too big to email. So she posted the one-minute video to her Facebook page for school officials to look at. "I was going to take it down in a day," she said. A day later, her husband, John, a corrections officer in the mid-Michigan city of St. Louis, came home from work and told her the news: the video had been viewed 7,000 times. Jennifer, shocked, decided to leave it up. It took off from there and has now been seen 12 million times. Zoey became a star of local TV news shows, and the family made appearances on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight. Newspapers as far away as the Daily Mail in London did feature stories. Jennifer started getting requests from Facebook visitors who had special needs children to make wheelchair coats for them, too. "A week later, I thought, 'Hey, this is a business,'" said Jennifer, a baker who was about to change professions and become an apparel manufacturer. "It's a very simple design, a simple idea. Why hadn't someone come up with this a long time ago? I don't consider myself a genius," she said. In February 2018, she started a company, X-Ability LLC, and began making a few coats for early customers — slowly, paintstakingly, not at a pace that would sustain a business. The company is based in Ithaca but has been nurtured substantially by the Central Michigan University Research Corp., the nonprofit that manages the Mt. Pleasant SmartZone, and by the Mt. Pleasant Small Business Development Center. The CMURC helped her apply for a patent and assisted with supply-chain procurement and distribution. She took classes in accounting, taxes and marketing through the SBDC. "When John and Jennifer came to CMURC, you couldn't help but get excited to see that they took something in their lives that had been a challenge and not only did they solve that challenge for themselves, but they also made a impact on so many others that faced the same challenge," said Elissa Gagne, the operations manager at CMURC. "The demand was evident, but they were making the coats at home and that was not sustainable." The Harrisons were referred to CMURC through a company the Harrisons had gone to for some marketing materials, Alley T Screen Printing Embroidery & Promotional Products of Ithaca. Jennifer was invited to join the SmartZone incubator's accelerator program, which takes very early stage would-be entrepreneurs and through three phases gets them ready for market and to meet investors. It is a free program, with four entrepreneurs accepted each month. The CMURC helped connect the Harrisons to a manufacturer, Grand Rapids-based AC Sewing Inc., and with Spider Marketing Group, a web designer and marketing company also based in Grand Rapids. In November 2018, X-Ability was ready for the marketplace. In promotional materials, the "X" spreads over the "dis" in "disability," x-ing it out. Zoey has also been branded as "the girl who saved recess." In the first four months, they had $100,000 in sales, with orders from around the world. They had hit $150,000 by the end of 2019, but sales slowed as they struggled to fund inventory needs. All of the proceeds have been put back into the company. John was recovering from an operation when the coronavirus hit and decided it was a good time to retire and join X-Ability full time, with the title of vice president. Jennifer is president. Currently, coat prices range from $115 for a chair raincoat to $138 for a child's winter coat to $185 for an adult coat to $215 for what is called a designer coat. "They had a pain and they solved it, and they realized it was a pain for others ... and the business took off," said Tony Fox, the regional director of the Mt. Pleasant SBDC. Which is where the real challenge comes in. "The problem with rapid growth is you have to make sure it is tenable, that it doesn't kill the company," said Fox. "That's been a lot of our work: How to scale when you see huge market demand." A major component of fulfilling market demand will be figuring out how to finance it, whether through lines of credit, angel investors or both. The hunt for capital is on hold until there is some semblance of normality with regard to the pandemic. But the need for capital has increased. The Harrisons had already added adult coats to their product line and need funding to expand the line of coats to include ski coats for the adaptive ski community. Sit skiing is a growing sport, very popular at the Paralympics, and they got design advice from those who run the adaptive skiing program at Caberfae Ski Resort in Cadillac. Meanwhile, last November, Zoey was named Miss Wheelchair Michigan for 2020 and 2021, honored both for being the impetus for the wheelchair coat but also for helping a supply drive for a local animal rescue. Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:48 PM PDT Josh Trank says he wanted to cast a black actress as Sue Storm in the 2015 film Fantastic Four, but the studio vetoed his plan. The director recently discussed the casting of the superhero saga during a virtual video interview with Geeks of Color. He told the outlet that he had specific plans for the cast, but got "pushback" from the studio. "There were a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind-the-scenes on that. I was mostly interested in a black Sue Storm, a black Johnny Storm and a black Franklin Storm," Trank stated. "But when you're dealing with a studio on a massive movie like that, everybody wants to keep an open mind to who the big stars are going to be." He said that open mind did not include having a black actress portray Sue Storm. "When it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a black woman in that role," he said. Kate Mara played Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan portrayed Johnny Storm, Miles Teller played Reed Richards and Jamie Bell was Ben Grimm. The film was released by Fox, before the rights went to Disney. Trank now says he should have exited the project in protest. "When I look back on that, I should have just walked when that realization hit me, and I feel embarrassed about that, that I didn't just out of principle," he said. "Because those aren't the values I stand for in my own life, and those weren't the values then or ever for me. Because I'm somebody who always talks about standing up for what I believe in, even if it means burning my career out, and I feel bad that I didn't take it to the mat with that issue. I feel like I failed in that regard." Viral video of toddlers hugging resurges as protests grow in the United States - ABC News Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:47 PM PDT A viral video of two racially diverse toddlers embracing on a New York City street is being widely shared again as protests continue to grow in the United States. Key points:
Firm friends Maxwell, 2, and Finnegan, 3, acquired worldwide fame last year when their parents posted the now-viral clip to social media. "It's resurging and coming back around," Finnegan's father Dan McKenna told ABC News. "We saw it shared and people started reaching out. We've seen a lot of things that said, 'wow, this is still relevant'. It's more relevant than it was before." When they realised they had a following around the world, the two families decided to use it to make a difference. They set up an Instagram page based on their sons' names to share advice from experts about how to talk to children in an effort to bridge the racial divide. Loading... In his original post, one of Maxwell's two fathers, Michael Cisneros, explained the embrace was the result of just 48 hours apart: "It's Thursday. These two haven't seen each other since Tuesday. So many feels, it's beautiful. So thankful." The vision of Maxwell, who is black, and Finnegan, who is white, struck a chord with viewers — something Mr Cisneros attributes to racial tensions. "It's sad that it got so big because of the boys' differences, coming from different backgrounds, being different colours," he said. "On the flip side it's good, it keeps the conversation going." The inseparable pair live one block from each other in Manhattan's northern suburbs. Their parents had initially met in a local restaurant in 2018 and bonded over their young children. The two families now celebrate birthdays together, go on vacation and attend the same weekly music classes. When faced with a months-long lockdown brought about by the coronavirus, it was decided they would quarantine together too. Loading The need for change is something Maxwell's father is now acutely aware of. "I fear for my son's future. I know what every parent of a black child feels," Mr Cisneros said. "[Husband] Alex and I will do everything we can to protect him but we can't protect him when he's not with us." Medina extends peaceful Black Lives Matter protests into weekend - cleveland.com Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:08 PM PDT MEDINA, Ohio -- The city of Medina did itself proud Saturday (June 6) with two peaceful demonstrations to show dismay and anger over the killing of George Floyd, a black man, by white policemen in Minneapolis and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The first demonstration began on Public Square at 1 p.m. A crowd of about 300 people stood on the square with handmade signs protesting racism and police brutality. Some signs read "Black Lives Matter," End Racism," "I Can't Breathe" and "A Movement, not a Moment." Megan Bauer of Medina held a sign reading "It Could Have Been My Son, Momma, Black Lives Matter." She explained that her son is biracial. He recently graduated from the police academy because he wants to work for change. Bauer's friend Ruth Loya of Hinckley Township brought some levity to the demonstration with her sign reading, "The Only Thing That Should be Separated by Color is Laundry." The demonstration was organized by Carol Brenstuhl of Medina County Together. She said her only role was to publicize the event. She was delighted that people came out in support. For the two hours of the event, a young woman with a megaphone led chants that the crowd enthusiastically and loudly joined in on. They chanted rhythmically, "No justice, no peace," Black Lives Matter," "Hands Up, Don't shoot," "Hey, hey, ho, ho, these racist cops have got to go," "George Floyd, Breanna Taylor," over and over, each chant repeated five or six times before the next one began. As the crowd chanted and held their signs toward passing traffic on the busy square, many drivers tooted their horns and raised their fists out their window to show support. According to Ward 1 City Council Representative Jessica Hazeltine, "It just shows how much Medina cares." At 2 p.m., the chant changed to "I Can't Breathe," echoing the last words of George Floyd as the Minneapolis policemen knelt on his back and neck. The crowd knelt on the grass to chant and continued for 9 minutes -- the duration of Floyd's torture. That 9 minutes seemed to last forever. Medina Police Chief Edward Kinney quietly watched over the crowd and said, "It's a peaceful demonstration of people exercising their First Amendment rights." He commented that several police officers from around the county were present to support Medina's police force; luckily, no police action was needed. As the crowd dispersed shortly before 3 p.m., many moved toward Dan's Dogs restaurant at 111 W. Liberty St., just off the square, where manager Phil Cubic and his staff grilled and then handed out free hot dogs and bottles of water to 300 people. Cubic was concerned that other stores were closing or boarding up their windows against any possible violence or vandalism. He said wanted to make a gesture of support for the demonstration. The second demonstration began at 4 p.m, called by the Rev. Arthur Ruffin of Second Baptist Church, 451 Bronson St. in Medina. Ruffin had urged, "Come peaceful in your actions, but aggressive with your voices." This demonstration was more like a prayer meeting than a political rally, despite the presence of many local political figures. The event drew a crowd of 400 people -- much more diverse than the mainly white group at 1 p.m. The African-American community was more widely represented at this demonstration. The protest included prayers, singing by the Second Baptist Praise Team, and heartfelt commentary by Ruffin, who is black. "If I didn't speak up, I'd be just as guilty as the police who killed George Floyd," he said of why he organized the protest. "As a black man, I feel threatened every day, but I believe Medina can make a change," Ruffin said. He cited his friendship with Chief Kinney and Mayor Dennis Hanwell, and told the crowd that he had met with both of them and decided that "it's time to say enough is enough." He explained to white audience members why blacks repeat "Black Lives Matter," despite people responding with "All Lives Matter." He used the analogy, "If I say ,'My father died' and you respond, 'Everyone's parents die,' that would be hurtful." To the person whose father has died, that death is the most important thing right then. The program continued with the reading of 24 names of black men and women killed by white men and a brief address by Hanwell. After a final prayer for peace and unity, the participants marched around the square, led by Kinney and Ruffin, who linked arms, through the Medina County courthouse parking lot and back to the gazebo before dispersing. Fantastic Four Director Says He Wanted to Cast a Black Actress - E! NEWS Posted: 06 Jun 2020 08:48 PM PDT Ben Rothstein/20th Century Fox/Marvel/Kobal/Shutterstock Director Josh Trank got candid about working on Fantastic Four. The 36-year-old recently opened up to Geeks of Color about his time on the film, which hit theaters back in August 2015. During a virtual interview, he told the outlet that he wanted to cast a Black actress for the role of Sue Storm and claimed he was met with "pretty heavy pushback" from the studio—which was Fox before the rights went to Disney. "There were a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind-the-scenes on that. I was mostly interested in a Black Sue Storm, a Black Johnny Storm and a Black Franklin Storm," the director shared. "But when you're dealing with a studio on a massive movie like that, everybody wants to keep an open mind to who the big stars are going to be." "When it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a Black woman in that role," he stated. Kate Mara played Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan played Johnny Storm, Miles Teller played Reed Richards and Jamie Bell played Ben Grimm. "When I look back on that, I should have just walked when that realization sort of hit me, and I feel embarrassed about that, that I didn't just out of principle," Trank expressed. He added, "Because those aren't the values I stand for in my own life. Those weren't the values then or ever for me. Because I'm somebody who always talks about standing up for what I believe in, even if it means burning my career out." This isn't the first time Trank has discussed working on Fantastic Four. He reviewed his own movie on Letterbxd back in November 2019. "I was expecting it to be much worse than it was. I literally haven't seen it since like two weeks before it came out, and I was in a heavily f--king traumatized state of mind. Why? Eh, save that for another time," he wrote. "Everyone in the film is a great actor, and overall there is a movie in there, somewhere. And that cast deserves to be in THAT movie. Everyone who worked on Fant4stic clearly wanted to be making THAT movie. But.... ultimately... It wasn't." "What I can tell is there are TWO different movies in one movie competing to be that movie," he continued. "I was 29 years old, making my 2nd film, in a situation more complicated than anything a 2nd time filmmaker should've walked into." He admitted in his review that he didn't regret "any part of it." As he put it, "It's a part of me." E! News has reached out to the studio for comment and has not heard back.

NJ superintendent apologizes for message with 'all lives matter' - 943thepoint.com Posted: 06 Jun 2020 06:08 PM PDT HAZLET — The township's school superintendent this week apologized for writing a statement that included the expression "all lives matter." The phrase has become a retort to "Black Lives Matter," a political movement and expression coined in 2012 following the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by a Florida neighborhood watchman. Like many public officials in days since the May 25 killing of George Floyd by the hands of Minneapolis police, Superintendent Scott Ridley shared a message meant to condemn racism. But in a follow-up message this week, Ridley acknowledged his poor choice of words after responses from district employees and township residents. "I was not aware (though I am now) that the phrase I used had political/racist undertones. That's on me. I wrote it simply because I believe — in a global sense — that all lives do indeed matter and I wanted to use this one heinous moment in our country's history to draw attention on a larger scale to all injustice," Ridley said. "But I missed the mark, having since learned, as one responder noted, 'All Lives Matter is completely disrespectful, especially at this time. This is a phrase that is commonly used to discount the Black Lives Matter movement, and the intention of sending this note at this time can only be construed as a message to discount the movement during the current events.' Lesson learned." The township's Raritan High School is 84% white and 2% black. The middle school has less than a dozen black students while the elementary schools have even fewer or none. Some celebrities have been pushing back against the "all lives matter" mantra. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Instagram posted his response to a customer email complaining about the company's website including a "Black Lives Matter" banner on the homepage. "'Black lives matter' doesn't mean other lives don't matter," Bezos explained in his reply. "Black lives matter speaks to racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system." "I have a 20-year-old son, and I simply don't worry that he might be choked to death while being detained one day. It's not something I worry about. Black parents can't say the same." Actor Ashton Kutcher posted an Instagram video addressing 'folks that are writing 'All Lives Matter.'" "[W]hile you may have the best intentions in saying 'All Lives Matter,' remember, for some people, black lives don't matter at all." People have been trying to explain Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter or the police version of Blue Lives Matter for years. This week, Psychology Today columnist Sam Louie says that "implicit bias is built into why people respond with 'All Lives Matter' or 'Blue Lives Matter.' They are not comfortable seeing the attention and spotlight given to a cause that's not relevant to their lives." In April, more than a month before Floyd's killing, Rachel Elizabeth Cargle wrote an essay for Harper's Bazaar titled "Why you need to stop saying 'All Lives Matter.'" "Let me be clear: our stating that black lives matter doesn't insinuate that other lives don't," she writes. "Of course all lives matter. That doesn't even need to be said. But the fact that white people get so upset about the term black lives matter is proof that nothing can center the wellbeing and livelihoods of black bodies without white people assuming it is to their demise." Back in 2016, L-Mani S. Viney explained in a Vanity Fair article that "saying 'Black Lives Matter' is neither separatist nor racist. It is not anti-white, and, contrary to what some in the media may say, it is definitely not anti-police." "It's hardly news to African-Americans that all lives matter. Our history of enduring challenges and tragedies allows us to understand what other people and groups endure. But that same understanding compels us to say Black Lives Matter, because the empathy we have shown others has so rarely been reciprocated," she continues. "If All Lives Matter, why do our fellow Americans continually challenge African-Americans to justify our pain instead of empathizing with it?" Elsewhere in New Jersey this week, the Jackson school district fired a transportation aid for using an anti-black slur on Snapchat, the Asbury Park Press reported. In Jersey City, meanwhile, McNair High School is investigating reports that 21 students had used racist or anti-gay slurs on social media and group chats, NJ.com reported. Viral video of Central Park 'Karen' Amy Cooper spawns #BlackBirdersWeek - New York Post Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:47 PM PDT One good thing has come out of the Central Park Karen fiasco: the birth of #BlackBirdersWeek last week. The movement came after Amy Cooper, aka Central Park Karen, called the police on Christian Cooper, a black man who was birding in the Ramble after he asked her to leash her dog. "Black Birders Week is a series of online events to celebrate Black scientists, scholars, and naturalists and to increase the visibility of Black birders, who face unique challenges and dangers when engaging in outdoor activities," according to the group's Wikipedia page. "The importance is normalizing the fact that Black people exist in the birding and natural sciences community," Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, one of the organizers of the event told CNN. "People don't understand that Black people exist in other contexts other than the ones they're exposed to. It's to ensure other people see the impact of Black birders and naturalists, and gives them a chance to be seen." Opoku-Agyeman also told The Verge, "A lot of times when you think about black people in nature, a lot of people associate that with a threat — that black people can't exist in nature without being threatened. So this idea that black people are thriving in nature — they are embracing nature, they are incredibly joyful and excited about showcasing the natural world to the rest of us – is a perspective that we desperately need." During the week, people posted photos of their favorite birds, favorite outdoor places and asked questions of experienced birders. Werner to Chelsea transfer suits both sides - Ballack - Goal Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:42 PM PDT Michael Ballack believes that Timo Werner's prospective move to Chelsea could work out fantastically for both sides, although he warned that the striker would need time to settle in the Premier League. Goal revealed on Friday that the Blues have struck a deal to meet the estimated £54 million (€60m/$68m) release clause that ties Werner to RB Leipzig. Chelsea have now offered the 24-year-old forward a contract worth £9m ($11m) per season and are the hot favourites to seal his signature this summer, even if Leipzig managing director Oliver Mintzlaff maintained on Saturday that no such bid had yet been received by the Bundesliga side. Ballack is no stranger to life at Stamford Bridge having spent no less than four seasons with the club, winning the Premier League in 2009-10; and he has backed his compatriot to make a success of the mooted transfer. "I think it's a good decision for both sides. For Timo, because he fits there, because the way [Chelsea] play football suits him," the former Germany midfielder explained to Sky. "I think that in Chelsea he has decided on a club where he has a better chance of playing, which is very important to him. "The team will be renewed, it will certainly be strengthened and a lot of money will be spent in Chelsea to knock again at the top. A good young team is being built there, which is very promising." Werner has helped himself to 25 Bundesliga goals this term, a record that has made him one of the German top flight's hottest properties. But while Ballack expects big things of the striker, he admitted that the added physicality of the Premier League would require no little adaptation. "That is the biggest difference in England that there is less whistling (from referees), especially for strikers," he added. "It is much more intense, with a lot more duels. He has to get used to it quickly because that's the point. "He is a robust player, is very fast, but he is also physically good in a duel and he will quickly get used to it."
