GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Governor Pete Ricketts announced Hall, Merrick, Hamilton and Dakota counties can enter Phase Two next Monday, June 22. The other 89 counties will start preparations for Phase Three.
Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele said he is pleased the progress the city has made after it was only two months ago, Hall County led Nebraska in positive coronavirus cases.
"We've done a wonderful job to get that infection rate under control," Mayor Steele said. "I commend the people in our Central District Health Department area for working so hard to tackle this matter and to make it better."
He said this is a great step for where he wants Grand Island to be. Steele hopes Governor Ricketts sees how well Hall County is doing so schools can open, the State Fair Board can plan events and the Husker Harvest Days can begin in earnest.
In terms of summer activities, Steele says he hopes to open up Lincoln Pool by July 1 but opening up Island Oasis water park is not a possibility.
"It's just not possible to manage that with the social distancing requirements but I want Lincoln Pool to open and we'll have a schedule that will allow swimmers in, and we'll do it where it's smart and safe," Steele said.
He advises residents to always wear a mask when entering businesses and to continue to wash your hands. While this is an important step toward more normal circumstances, Steele hopes Phase Three is not far behind.
"What I'm looking forward to is that the Governor will eventually decide that we're doing so well in our Health District, that we can join the other 89 counties," Mayor Steele said. "We're on the right track it's just a matter of keeping on that right track."
