Dewey Beach resident Peter Briccotto has announced he will run for one of two seats up for grabs in Dewey’s municipal election Saturday, Sept. 26.
Briccotto said the town faces financial challenges due to the impact of COVID-19, and with the need to hire a new town manager, it’s a chance to set a different direction in governance.
“I have an extensive background in tourism and community development,” Briccotto said by phone July 22. “The time is right.”
Briccotto said he wants to focus on bridging the gaps among property owners, business owners and tourists. Rather than labeling Dewey a family town or nightlife town, he said, officials and other leaders should focus on creating a beach community everyone can enjoy.
A full-time Dewey resident since 2018, Briccotto serves on Dewey’s infrastructure committee; he previously lived in Rehoboth for several years.
Briccotto is the community engagement director for Highway One, and is a founder and executive director of Winter Wonderfest. He said he has served as a political consultant for statewide candidates since 2010. Briccotto said he plans to officially file to run within the week.
Terms for council seats held by Commissioners Gary Persinger and David Moskowitz expire in September. In a July 22 email, Persinger said he had nothing yet to announce.
“We have a bit more time than usual this year because the election is so late in September,” Persinger wrote.
Moskowitz could not be reached for comment.
