| Pompeo's speech slamming China will have the 'opposite effect,' says former U.S. diplomat - CNBC Posted: 24 Jul 2020 12:08 AM PDT  U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech slamming China was an "angry lament" and "extended ideological rant" that would do little to change Beijing's behavior, said a former top American diplomat to Asia. Specifically, Pompeo's seeming attempt to rally the Chinese people against the Communist Party of China is "primitive and ineffective" that's likely to increase support for Chinese President Xi Jinping, said Daniel Russel, who served as assistant secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific affairs from 2013 to 2017. "This sort of denunciation (is) having the opposite effect, in bolstering support in China for Xi Jinping and deepening anger towards the United States," he told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Friday. "Complaining is not fixing and denouncing is not diplomacy," said Russel, who's now vice president for international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute. Pompeo on Thursday delivered a sweeping address at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, saying the U.S. will no longer tolerate Beijing's playbook to usurp global order and calling on allies to "induce China to change." He also called for the engagement and empowerment of the Chinese people, whom he described as "dynamic and freedom-loving people who are completely distinct from the Chinese Communist Party." But with the U.S. presidential election nearing, Chinese policymakers are unlikely to react in way that would "fundamentally" change the two countries' relationship, he said. "So they're, to some extent, absorbing these body blows and I think waiting for after the election to decide where Beijing wants to take this relationship," Hirson told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" on Friday. "For the time being, they're watching it evolve and are not prepared to take drastic changes that would change the way that Beijing is dealing with this new challenge from the U.S.," he added. Relations between the U.S. and China — the world's top two economies — have been at their worst in decades. In addition to the countries' ongoing trade war, both sides have recently sparred over a range of issues including the origin of the coronavirus and China's move to implement a national security law in Hong Kong. Russel said the "blame China" and "get tough on China" rhetoric in the U.S. means tensions between the two countries could worsen. | China orders US consulate in Chengdu to cease operations in retaliation for Houston closure - CNN Posted: 23 Jul 2020 11:08 PM PDT A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said US diplomats in China had been notified Friday morning that Beijing was revoking the license for the Chengdu consulate in China's southwest, which has been ordered to "stop all business and activities." It added that the US had "unilaterally provoked the incident" by ordering the closure of the Houston office, an action Beijing said "seriously violated international law and the basic norms of international relations." "The current situation between China and the United States is something China does not want to see, and the responsibility rests entirely with the United States," the foreign ministry said. "We once again urge the US to immediately revoke the erroneous decision to create necessary conditions for the return of bilateral relations to normal." On Twitter, Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, said the order was "a legitimate and necessary response to the unilateral provocative move by the US to demand the closure of China's Consulate General in Houston." The US State Department could not immediately be reached for comment. RetaliationChengdu, the capital of China's southwest Sichuan province, is an important diplomatic outpost for the US, covering a large swath of the country, including the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The consulate was also the site of the dramatic attempted defection in 2012 by Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, whose actions kicked off a series of events that led to the downfall of top Communist Party official Bo Xilai. Speaking to CNN ahead of the announcement, James Green, a China analyst at Georgetown and former US diplomat, said that given Washington had recently moved to sanction Chinese officials over human rights abuses in Tibet, "closing the Chengdu consulate might appeal to some." Observers had previously suggested Beijing could order the closure of the US consulate in Wuhan, which is informally paired with Houston and the most recent to open in China. But diplomats have not been working from the consulate for several months now, having evacuated early in the coronavirus pandemic. Attempts to return to work were stymied by China's insistence that diplomats undergo coronavirus testing on arrival, potentially exposing their DNA to the Chinese security services, rather than provide a negative test result. Effectively, this means that two US consulates in China will soon be out of action, while the Chinese office in Houston is still running as of Friday Beijing time, with the deadline for its closure fast approaching. US President Donald Trump has suggested he might order the closure of more Chinese consulates, with some officials and the FBI linking the diplomatic outposts to espionage and IP theft by China in the US. Federal prosecutors are currently seeking a Chinese scientist accused of visa fraud who they say is hiding out in China's consulate in San Francisco.  Rising tensionsRelations between China and the US have plummeted in the past year, amid an ongoing trade war, the coronavirus pandemic, and US criticism of China's human rights abuses in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. "As President Trump has made very clear, we need a strategy that protects the American economy and indeed our way of life. The free world must triumph over this new tyranny," Pompeo said. "The truth is that our policies -- and those of other free nations -- resurrected China's failing economy, only to see Beijing bite the international hands that were feeding it. We opened our arms to Chinese citizens, only to see the Chinese Communist Party exploit our free and open society." The top US diplomat was recently in Europe where he rallied governments on the continent to take a harder line with Beijing. His posture has made Pompeo a figure of loathing in China. Reacting to his speech Friday, Hua, the foreign ministry spokeswoman, accused Pompeo of "launching a new crusade against China in a globalized world." "What he is doing is as futile as an ant trying to shake a tree," she added. "It's about time that all peace-loving people around the world stepped forward to prevent him from doing the world more harm." Hyman stars in season three of the highly acclaimed Showtime drama "The Chi." It's a coming of age series that explores the complexities of life on the South Side of Chicago. It follows a group of residents who are bonded by the need for connection and redemption. For Hyman this was another great role, after playing Dr. Emile Cooper on CBS's hit drama "Blue Bloods" for three seasons. "I was extremely ecstatic to audition for the show and for this part specifically," she said. Hyman plays "Dre," a high school guidance counselor who happens to be a lesbian and has two stepchildren. The storyline explores how she affects the lives of her students in a major way. "I am 100 percent in support of the LGBTQ community, so for me it was like 'wow, this is a great opportunity to show that representation matters' and I don't mean only from a woman's perspective, but a black woman's perspective and also a black woman who is playing a woman who happens to be lesbian," Hyman explained. The talented actress is also a songwriter and hip-hop lyricist. She records music under the name Robyn Hood. She released her third EP last month. "I want to keep it uplifting. I want to do lyrics that are positive and motivate my community," she said. Hyman got her Masters Degree from Yale School of Drama with another familiar face, Academy Award Winner Lupita Nyong'o. The two have remained friends and Hyman has written rap lyrics for Nyong'o. "She would tell me different things that were going on in her life, or a different project she was working on, and I would write some bars and teach it to her. She's a quick learner and she loves to just do fun things. It's been a great opportunity every single time," she said. Hyman has a message for young people who are struggling to break out of bad situations as she did. "I guess the biggest thing for me to say to them is that it's doable, you can do this, and really just understand that things will take time. But if you stick with it, if you trust yourself and continue to invest in yourself, then the outcome will be a success," she said, "The Chi" airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on Showtime. Goh Chai Hin | AFP | Getty Images China's Foreign Ministry announced Friday that it is revoking the license for the U.S. consulate general in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu. The ministry also ordered the consulate general to cease operations, according to an online statement. "The current situation between China and the U.S. is something the Chinese side does not want to see," the foreign ministry said in an online Chinese-language statement, according to a CNBC translation. "The responsibility lies entirely with the U.S. side," the statement added. "We again urge the U.S. side to immediately revoke its relevant wrong decisions, to create necessary conditions for the two countries' relationship to return to normal." The Chengdu consular district covers the controversial autonomous region of Tibet, the municipality of Chongqing, and the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou, according to the consulate's website. The announcement comes after the U.S. ordered China to close its consulate in Houston. U.S. State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said the directive to close China's consulate general in Houston was made to protect American intellectual property and the private information of its citizens. Beijing had condemned the decision and warned of firm countermeasures. During a CNBC "Street Signs Asia" interview earlier on Friday, Eurasia Group's Michael Hirson said that "if they were to choose an important but still secondary consulate like Chengdu or Shenyang, that would be in keeping with the role that the Houston consulate serves." Hirson, who is practice head for China and Northeast Asia at Eurasia Group, explained that targeting the consulates in Shanghai or Guangzhou "would be a notch above Houston." "If they were to close the Hong Kong consulate, that would be then thrusting this dispute into what's already very serious impasse of course with the future of Hong Kong and Hong Kong's autonomy," he said. "So I think that would be the most escalatory move in terms of closing the consulate." Mainland Chinese stocks led losses in the Asia Pacific region during Friday trade, as U.S.-China tensions hit investor sentiment. The Chengdu consulate, which was established in 1985, is one of five the U.S. has in mainland China, in addition to the embassy in Beijing. Swift worked on the record with the National's Aaron Dessner (who co-wrote or produced 11 of folklore's 16 songs), Dessner's twin brother Bryce (who wrote orchestration for the album), Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (featured on "exile" and later on "peace"), William Bowery, and frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff. | Buffalo chases elephant away. Viral video has an important message - India Today Posted: 23 Jul 2020 09:47 PM PDT  A video of an elephant and a buffalo has surfaced on Twitter and is being circulated across social media frequently for the message that it propagates. Susanta Nanda of the Indian Forest Services tweeted the 20-second video and it has collected 6,000 views so far. In the clip that appears to have been shot in the grasslands, three buffalos and two elephants enjoyed the space. One of the elephants, however, was not quite happy about the buffaloes and walked towards one of them. Soon after, the elephant kicked the buffalo, much to its displeasure. Outraged, the buffalo sounded off the elephant by chasing it away. "Buffalo chases away the elephant. Remember that strength in mind is more important in life," Susanta Nanda said in the caption of his post. Watch the video here:

| Posted: 23 Jul 2020 09:47 PM PDT  The recent viral video showing a kitten pilfering a wad of cash from a pub in Russia and trying to make a getaway before being nabbed in the act by the owner is entirely expected. Ever since the advent of social media, cat burglaries have been a fairly common subject, with a surprisingly large number of videos showing felines of all sizes and shapes purloining cash rather than the usual things that can be expected to be of interest to them such as food, toys or even an unwary rodent. That is not to say all cats are potential burglars, but T S Eliot had clearly been prescient when writing in 1939 about 'Macavity's a Mystery Cat: He's called the Hidden Paw/ For he's the master criminal who can defy the law'. The only point of interest in this case is the age of the perpetrator, as they seem to be getting younger and younger now. Even this kitten, it has been revealed, is not a cat's paw but a brazen repeat offender.  |

| T-Mobile will reportedly dump some phones from its network — and even sooner than AT&T - The Verge Posted: 23 Jul 2020 07:44 PM PDT Remember when AT&T told customers their phones would stop working and encouraged them to buy new ones during a pandemic? T-Mobile is reportedly going to be sending out some messages like that too, but it seems like the company could be going about it a little differently (and hopefully less aggressively) than AT&T, according to an apparent internal document from T-Mobile shared by Android Police. T-Mobile will reportedly require phones on its network to support voice over LTE (VoLTE) starting in January 2021. That means if your phone doesn't currently support VoLTE, you'll need to upgrade if you want to be able to keep making calls with that phone on T-Mobile. And T-Mobile is apparently so intent on phasing out older technologies that it'll reportedly stop activating new devices that don't support VoLTE on August 4th, which is just a couple weeks away. Basically, what T-Mobile seems to be saying is that unless you haven't upgraded your phone for a very long time, you probably won't run into issues once VoLTE is required. When it comes time for T-Mobile to tell some customers that they need to upgrade, hopefully the company learns from AT&T's mistakes. Yesterday, AT&T scared some customers by sending them an email with the big, blue, bold, all-caps heading "UPDATE NEEDED," informing them that their phone is "not compatible with the new network," and that they'll need to replace it to keep getting service. (Some customers felt the email was so egregious that they believed it was a scam.) What AT&T neglected to make clear, though, is that those customers won't actually need to upgrade their phone until early 2022 — that's when AT&T plans to shut down its 3G network and when some devices will actually stop working. Let's hope T-Mobile is clearer about what customers need to do and when they need to do it. Verizon is also in the process of shutting down its 3G network, and said last year it would be delaying that shutdown to the end of 2020. Indonesians can visit Bali's beaches, temples and popular surfing spots from July 31 while international tourists will be allowed from Sept. 11, the island's Governor Wayan Koster said at an online seminar. Authorities will speed up efforts to control the Covid-19 outbreak before the sector is reopened, he said. "To bring tourists back, we have to provide a sense of comfort that Bali is able to control the Covid-19 problem well," Koster said Wednesday. "Once we get this under control, I'm confident that tourists will come back soon. People are eager to return." The number of confirmed cases in Bali nearly doubled to 2,934 this month, raising concern the reopening of tourism sites will further fuel the pandemic. The island, popular with both foreign and local tourists, had some success in containing the virus outbreak in its early phase but the return of migrant workers and easing of physical distancing rules triggered a surge in infections. Indonesia has seen a plunge in tourists arrivals this year with foreign visitors to Bali declining 55% in the five months through May. More than 6 million tourists visited Bali last year with the Malaysians, Chinese and Australians making up the bulk of the travelers, official data show. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the claims made Tuesday in London by Pompeo that China had "co-opted international institutions like the World Health Organization" were untrue and a distraction from the global coronavirus pandemic response. "The comments are untrue and unacceptable and without any foundation for that matter," Tedros said at a news briefing from the United Nations agency's Gevena headquarters on Thursday. "WHO will not be distracted by these comments and we don't want the international community also to be distracted." Tedros has repeatedly defended the WHO against criticism of its response to the coronavirus. U.S. President Donald Trump and others have alleged the U.N. health agency has a favorable relationship with China, where the virus emerged at the end of 2019. Tedros reiterated comments on Thursday that the politicization of the pandemic is one of the greatest threats to the global response. "I feel the need to say something as an American, as a proud WHO employee," Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, who was born in New York state and is head of the WHO's emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, added. | 綾野剛＆星野源『MIU404』見返せば見返すほど…どんでん返しに「鳥肌」「涙が」 - ドワンゴジェイピーnews Posted: 23 Jul 2020 06:06 PM PDT 綾野剛＆星野源『MIU404』見返せば見返すほど…どんでん返しに「鳥肌」「涙が」 - ドワンゴジェイピーnews 「1時間とは思えない密度」「このドラマは集中が必要」「あれをあの時間内に纏めるって凄い」。綾野剛と星野源がW主演を務めるドラマ『MIU404』（TBS系、金曜よる10時～）は、どのセリフもどの表情もどのカットも逃すまいと、画面にかじりついて見てしまう作品。Twitter上では、「放送中はツイートできない」という声も多い。 本作は、『逃げるは恥だが役に立つ』『アンナチュラル』の脚本家・野木亜紀子氏による一話完結のオリジナル作品。警視庁"機動捜査隊"（通称：機捜）でバディを組む"野生のバカ"伊吹（綾野剛）と理性的な志摩（星野源）。二人の掛け合いを楽しみながら、ただの事件解決では終わらない、たたみかける"その先""その奥"のストーリーが、深い味わいを生む。ちょっとした会話の中にあるヒントがのちに効いてきたり、何でもないと思っていた景色がとても重要な意味を持っていたり。一度観て、結末を知ってからもう一度観ると、繫がる納得感と深まる感動、そして新たな発見もあったりする。 第4話は、絶望に見えたものが"幸せの物語"へ。どんでん返しに視聴者は「ヤラレタ！」「ぐっときた」「涙がでる」「鳥肌がやばすぎた」「神回」と大反響となった。 サブタイトルは「ミリオンダラー・ガール」。 スーツケースを持って逃げる女が、男に撃たれながらも逃走。スーツケースの中身は1億円と判明。女は2年前の裏カジノ事件で逮捕された青池透子（美村里江）だとわかる。1億円は暴力団のカネを横領したものだと判明。青池を追う男を確保。青池の死。スーツケースの1億円は消えていた… これが第4話の約3分の2までの流れ。事件の謎が一つずつ明らかになっていくのは明快で、スピーディー。しかし、伝えられていたのはそれだけではない。隊長・桔梗（麻生久美子）の子供のこと、今まで"謎の女"だったハムちゃんこと羽野麦（黒川智花）のこと、「エトリ」という新たな人物のこと。そして、志摩（星野源）が見せた闇。「常に、多い方を取るしかない」という我孫子（生瀬勝久）の数の理論や、暴力団の手口の巧妙化、メロンパンのジューシーさのあーだこーだ、急かされて麺をすすり強面の刑事にビビる九重（岡田健史）の可愛らしい一面まで。ドラマの根底になる謎を少しずつ解き明かしながら、人間や社会への問題提起、登場人物たちのキャラクターも印象的に描き出している。   その中でも、最も注目したいのは、メロンパン号での伊吹（綾野剛）と志摩（星野源）の会話。 この二人のテンポの良い会話には、いつも事件のヒントが隠れている。序盤で、「前にさぁ、タイガーマスク現象ってあったじゃん？」と、自分もマネをして施設にランドセルを3つ贈ったと明かした伊吹。しかし、ニュースで見たのは、「ランドセルばかり届いて困っているんです！」と訴える施設の女性。食べていたカツが口から落ちるほどの衝撃。「誰だっていいことしたいだろ？」と語りかける伊吹に志摩は、「いいことをするには、心の余裕と金銭的余裕がいる」「金持ちは、金もうけの為に悪いことをする」と、第4話へ滑らかに誘い込んだ。  メロンパン号の会話でもう一つ。「ウサギってさぁ、追い詰められるとオオカミも真っ青な強烈なキック繰り出すんだって」「そいつの本性知るには、生死がかかった瞬間を見るといい」とウサギの編みぐるみがアップになるシーンがある。これがまさに、第4話の結末かもしれない。「ヤバイ、暇、志摩、暇」「偶然、棚ぼた、盗み聞きの3連コンボでドヤ顔すんな」言葉遊びのようなセリフにニヤニヤしながら、伏線はどんどん張られていた。  青池透子が横領した1億円はどこへ消えたのか。Twitterならぬ"つぶったー"で、「最後に見た景色は、絶望だった」と思えた呟きだが、真相は逆。青池透子は逃亡中に宝石を購入、自身が編んだウサギのぬいぐるみの目に詰めて、問題を抱える女の子たちへ寄付した。生死のかかった瞬間に、暴力団も警察も欺く強力なキックを繰り出した。青池透子がバスの車窓から最後に見た運送トラックは、彼女の人生の"一瞬の煌めき"。高速を降りるバスとメロンパン号。その横を並走していた運送トラックにそんな意味があったなんて。この分岐点の画を二度目に見たときの感動はすごい。 誰だっていいことはしたい。ただそれが純粋に喜ばれるかはわからない…。青池透子を演じた美村里江は、「第４話は透子の"幸せ"の物語です」と言い切っている。  「彼女の気持ちを余すところなく代弁したい想いで演じました」と語る美村の熱演は、何度見ても涙がこぼれ、鳥肌が立つ。最後に笑顔で息絶えた彼女の人生は、幸せだったのかもしれない。他人が決めることじゃないけれど。 2020-07-23 22:31:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiJGh0dHBzOi8vbmV3cy5kd2FuZ28uanAvdHYvNTE5NTUtMjAwN9IBAA?oc=5  |
