Indonesia flash flooding death toll rises to more than 30 - News Shopper Posted: 17 Jul 2020 12:08 AM PDT The death toll from flash floods in Indonesia's South Sulawesi province rose to 32 on Thursday with 16 people still missing, officials said. National Search and Rescue Agency spokesman Yusuf Latif said rain continued to fall as hundreds of rescuers searched on Thursday for the missing villagers. The floods began on Saturday evening when heavy rains caused three rivers to overflow. The six sub-districts affected by the floods are far from the provincial capital, Makassar, and rescuers were hampered by thick mud covering the roads that made the areas difficult to reach. "It is difficult to pass through the areas," Mr Latid said. "We are also having communication difficulties," Latid said. Heavy rains cause frequent flash floods and landslides in Indonesia, where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near flood plains. CSU Team Inks Licensing Deal for COVID-19 Viral Detection Test - Source Posted: 16 Jul 2020 09:47 PM PDT A prototype of the viral sensor CSU researchers have licensed to Quara Devices. A small, inexpensive virus-detection technology invented by Colorado State University researchers will soon form the basis of a new product that could compete with standard diagnostic testing for COVID-19. The new diagnostic device, which aims to be fast, portable and more accurate than currently available COVID-19 tests, is one of several technologies spawned from a collaboration among CSU researchers Brian Geiss, Chuck Henry and David Dandy. Combining their wide-ranging expertise in virology, chemistry and chemical engineering, the team has licensed their viral RNA-testing platform to Quara Devices, a startup company specializing in diagnostic biosensors. The licensing deal, mediated by CSU Ventures, was inked earlier this summer and allows the company to move the invention into product engineering and design phases, while the CSU scientists continue testing the devices for efficacy and accuracy. The Chief Science Officer of Quara is Ken Reardon, a professor in the CSU Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Geiss, Henry and Dandy have worked several years together developing low-cost biological diagnostic platforms for applications including viruses, bacteria and antibodies. For the device they've licensed to Quara, their original goal was detecting organisms with antimicrobial resistance. As COVID-19 was becoming a pandemic, they found they could generalize their basic platform, which they began developing over a year ago, into a sensitive test for RNA viruses, including coronaviruses like SARS-CoV-2. Reardon, who joined Quara last year after consulting on a bacterial-detection technology for the company, approached his CSU colleagues about possibly extending their viral detection strategy into a product that Quara could commercialize. During these negotiations, the COVID-19 pandemic worsened, which further spurred the group toward a deal that would allow them to enter the COVID-19 diagnostics market. Their technology is envisioned as a point-of-need genetic analyzer for viruses and bacteria, including but not limited to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. "This technology predated the pandemic, but because of its versatility as a platform, and the significant need for high accuracy in detecting COVD-19 in patients, we see an urgency to get it out now," Reardon said. "We are trying to get this into the market within the year, which is a pretty aggressive acceleration." How it worksHenry, a professor in the Department of Chemistry, explained that the licensed technology is a paper-based, "lateral-flow" device reminiscent of a home pregnancy test. It recognizes a target sequence in the virus's genetic material, then amplifies that signal to display a positive readout – like the line on a pregnancy test. The test serves the same purpose as the genetic analysis technique called quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19 from saliva samples. PCR requires large, expensive laboratory instrumentation and a "chain reaction" of copying the viral genome sequence of interest using temperature cycles. The CSU test works at one temperature, and it includes an extra chemical step that improves the test's selectivity and accuracy. Because it combines all these elements in one handheld device, it doesn't require laboratory analysis, keeping the cost down. "I am very much a believer that if you don't get a technology like this into someone's hands who can make and produce it, it's just an academic exercise," said Henry, who has been involved in several CSU research-based startup companies. "It was a big deal for us to move this into a product that will help people." Beyond the genetic analyzer they've licensed, the team is continuing to develop other diagnostic tests with the same goals of accuracy, portability and cost effectiveness. For example, they are hard at work on a serological test that detects proteins, whether antibodies or antigens, that would compete with the industry standard "ELISA" tests used today. Across disciplinesThe research team first came together in 2015 under an Office of the Vice President for Research initiative called Catalyst for Innovative Partnerships that provided seed funding for cross-disciplinary work. CSU's vice president for research office has for several years made strategic investments in research relating to outbreak diagnostics, including for the team that invented the Quara device, as well as another team that develops molecular tags for in vivo imaging and editing. CSU researchers Chuck Henry, Brian Geiss and David Dandy. Geiss is an associate professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology with biological expertise in how RNA viruses replicate. Henry, an analytical chemist, has broad experience in microfabrication of paper-based chemical tests, chromatography and microfluidics. Dandy, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has expertise in transport mechanics, including the physics of how materials and fluids interact with sensor surfaces. "All three of us work well together to cover all aspects of making biosensors and assay devices," Henry said. Rod Reum, CEO of Quara Devices, said: "We are excited to work with the high caliber cross-disciplinary CSU team, and for the great potential for this technology to be an accessible tool to quickly and accurately detect COVID-19 and other viruses." Cuomo defends Covid poster that doesn't mention New York's pandemic death toll - CNN Posted: 16 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT "Oh, we're not celebrating at all," Cuomo, a Democrat, told CNN's Kate Bolduan on "Newsroom" when pressed about the poster, which he released earlier this week. "What we're saying is New Yorkers did step up and did flatten the curve. That is a fact. ... I applaud New Yorkers. I'm proud to applaud New Yorkers." The vintage-style poster, which was designed by the governor himself, highlights the state's success in decreasing its number of coronavirus hospitalizations. It includes a number of references to various aspects of the state's response to the pandemic, such as the shutdown of the state's economy earlier this year, a state-manufactured hand sanitizer line and the Javits Center field hospital. But critics have pointed out that the poster doesn't acknowledge the more than 32,000 New Yorkers who have lost their lives to the virus. The poster is featured on the governor's official website and it can also be purchased from a website not affiliated with the state. Asked by Bolduan if it was a mistake to put out the poster while the country is still in the midst of the pandemic, Cuomo said he didn't think so, and again applauded the efforts of the state's residents over the last few months. New York has been at the center of the pandemic since its onset, and the state currently leads the country in both coronavirus cases and deaths. Cuomo, whose national profile increased during the pandemic due in part to the daily televised addresses he gave for more than 100 days, lamented the loss of life during his last address in June. "Today, we have done a full 180, from worst to first," he said last month. "We are controlling the virus better than any state in the country and any nation on the globe." But the governor has also faced detractors, who assert that he made a number of missteps earlier this year, including not shutting down New York's economy fast enough as the number of cases in the state began to climb. Army, New York medical teams giving Houston a helping hand during pandemic - ArmyTimes.com Posted: 16 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT HOUSTON — Teams of doctors and nurses from New York and the U.S. Army have descended on Houston after the nation's fourth-largest city sought help to deal with a surge of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. A 86-person Army team of doctors, nurses, and support staff on Thursday worked to take over a wing of United Memorial Medical Center, a small north Houston hospital, to help it treat COVID-19 patients. The military personnel were expected to pair up with hospital staff and treat up to about 40 patients at a time in the coming days. As the pandemic has progressed, the hospital has been rapidly dedicating more and more space to virus care. Some of the soldiers on Thursday wore their duty uniforms. Others wore scrubs affixed with strips of surgical tape that bore their ranks, names and medical titles. The soldiers have come from around the country, overseen by U.S. Army North in San Antonio. Around 580 Army and Navy personnel have been assigned to help fight COVID-19 in Texas. "This facility, working with the United States military, is something that we asked for," said U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Houston Democrat, standing near the soldiers as they moved through the hospital wing. "We have exhausted medical personnel that we're so grateful to, but we didn't have enough." The Army medical team's arrival came as Texas has struggled to contain one of the biggest recent coronavirus surges in the U.S. On Thursday, Texas again set a single-day record for new deaths with 129. Nearly a third of the state's 3,561 deaths since the pandemic began have been reported in July. Texas reported 10,291 confirmed new cases on Thursday, slightly down from Wednesday's state record high of 10,791. The state reported 10,457 people were hospitalized for COVID-19. Gov. Greg Abbott told KRIV-TV that in Harris County, where Houston is located, hospitalizations look like "they're beginning to get contained." Data showed that new COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Houston area appeared to have leveled off in the last week. "We're certainly not out of the woods yet, but this could be a glimmer of hope coming if people will continue wearing face masks wherever possible," said Abbott, who two weeks ago had ordered most of the state's 30 million residents to wear masks. In addition to the military personnel, a group of doctors and nurses from New York, along with personal protective equipment and other supplies arrived in Houston last weekend to help set up testing sites at two churches, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a conference call. One of the testing sites opened on Thursday and people "are taking full advantage" of it, said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. The other site is set to open on Friday. Houston has been struggling to meet the growing demand for COVID-19 testing, with long waits and sites often running out of daily test supplies by noon. "A lot of people ... are wanting testing, needing testing and they're having to wait a long time," Turner said. Cuomo said it was in his state's best interests to help other communities — it is also assisting Atlanta — and to return the help New York received when it was the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak in the spring. Cuomo's office sent 19 clinical staff and five support staff to Houston, along with supplies to support the two testing sites, according to Mary Benton, a spokeswoman for Turner. "All New Yorkers stand with you in solidarity. Anything you need, know that we are here and you can call on us," Cuomo told Turner. Also Thursday, in Dallas County, officials said that schools in the county won't open for on-campus instruction until Sept. 8. Associated Press writer Paul J. Weber in Austin, Texas, contributed to this report.
Readers catch star-studded ChildAid concert from home - The Straits Times Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:58 AM PDT Readers catch star-studded ChildAid concert from home - The Straits Times Bringing together patrons and artists through the power of music, virtual fund-raising concert ChildAid 2020 - Virtually Yours delighted online viewers with a star-studded show yesterday evening. The 16th edition of the concert was an engaging musical and dance medley featuring home-grown musicians such as ChildAid alumnus Nathan Hartono, jazz maestro Jeremy Monteiro, orchestra conductor Wong Kah Chun, as well as artists Jasmine Sokko and Benjamin Kheng. Organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times, the show is aimed at raising funds for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF), which helps about 10,000 disadvantaged students pay for their meals and transport, and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BTBAF), which supports lessons in the performing and visual arts for 1,000 financially disadvantaged children who are artistically talented. "Overwhelming" was how Ms Elfa Irwani Amin Iskak described the virtual concert which she watched with her family. The 45-year-old, an administrator at Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central, who has been an avid supporter of ChildAid since its inception, was heartened by the effort that went into the show. "The small support we give goes a long way in helping families and children. I work very closely with students who have benefited from the STSPMF, and have watched how it has supported students at the ITE," she added. Ms Elfa said the segment featuring ChildAid alumni and supporters singing A World To Imagine was heart-warming, and she was glad to share the experience with her three daughters aged 11,15 and 17. Another viewer, Ms Leong Cheng Yee, 44, said the virtual concert was a good way for home-grown artists to extend their reach beyond Singapore's shores. "There have been many digital performances that have come up since the circuit breaker period. But what stood out for me in this concert was the sleek presentation and relatable performances," she said. Ms Leong, an events and exhibitions director, added that she was grateful to be able to watch the show with friends over dinner, which would not have been possible at a physical concert. The concert, which is supported by main sponsors UOB and UBS, as well as platinum sponsors Citi and Richard Mille, has raised $1.95 million as of last night.
Traditionally held at the end of the year, the show was brought forward to this month to help those impacted by Covid-19. President Halimah Yacob, who delivered the opening remarks for the concert, said she was heartened that ChildAid has been raising funds for less fortunate children and their families through the STSPMF and BTBAF. Said Madam Halimah: "The initiatives have improved their lives while enabling them to pursue their interests in the arts and music sector. "During this challenging period, it is even more important that we provide continued support for the vulnerable groups in society. I hope the concert will encourage everyone to donate generously, to help the less fortunate amongst us." The first virtual edition of ChildAid also marks two key milestones - the 175th anniversary of The Straits Times and the 20th anniversary of the STSPMF. Mr Warren Fernandez, editor of The Straits Times and editor-in-chief of Singapore Press Holdings' English/Malay/Tamil Media Group, noted that while the decision to hold a virtual concert was brought on by the Covid-19 situation, it also reflected the tremendous efforts made over the years to transform ST from a print product into a multimedia news form able to deliver news and interesting content anywhere and any time. Thanking viewers for their support for the STSPMF and BTBAF, Mr Fernandez said: "It is with your support that we're able to help the many families and children who come to us for support at this very difficult time." 2020-07-15 21:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiXGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnN0cmFpdHN0aW1lcy5jb20vc2luZ2Fwb3JlL3JlYWRlcnMtY2F0Y2gtc3Rhci1zdHVkZGVkLWNoaWxkYWlkLWNvbmNlcnQtZnJvbS1ob21l0gEA?oc=5 |
Getai veteran Wang Lei: I earn two to three times more selling seafood on livestreams - AsiaOne Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:58 AM PDT Getai veteran Wang Lei: I earn two to three times more selling seafood on livestreams - AsiaOne Has local veteran singer-actor Wang Lei found a new calling selling seafood on livestreams? Not really. However, during a press conference yesterday (July 15), the 59-year-old admitted that he earns more hawking seafood on his livestreams than he does performing getai. He said: "How much can one make selling [seafood] online? I can only say, what I earn after an hour of selling seafood online is about two to three times more than one getai show." Wang Lei first became an online sensation when he started his seafood sales stream amid the Covid-19 circuit breaker period. He goes by his online moniker Mai Yu Ge (Chinese for Fish-selling Bro), and holds Facebook livestreams that draw up to 62,000 viewers while dressed in his signature bandana with his silvery hair spiked up. ALSO READ: Eric Tsang sells alcohol on livestream, draws ire after buyers receive counterfeits Despite his side business bringing in the big bucks as well as online fame in Singapore, Malaysia, and even China, Wang Lei affirmed that he will not give up getai. "Getai is my 'root' and though it doesn't earn much, I won't ever forget my roots." He also cautioned people against thinking that he's earning easy money. "Don't just think that livestreams bring you easy money. There's actually a lot of complex logistics and preparations involved. I need to spend days to prepare for just one livestream session. It's really not easy." bryanlim@asiaone.com 2020-07-16 04:12:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMidGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmFzaWFvbmUuY29tL2VudGVydGFpbm1lbnQvZ2V0YWktdmV0ZXJhbi13YW5nLWxlaS1pLWVhcm4tdHdvLXRocmVlLXRpbWVzLW1vcmUtc2VsbGluZy1zZWFmb29kLWxpdmVzdHJlYW1z0gF4aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYXNpYW9uZS5jb20vZW50ZXJ0YWlubWVudC9nZXRhaS12ZXRlcmFuLXdhbmctbGVpLWktZWFybi10d28tdGhyZWUtdGltZXMtbW9yZS1zZWxsaW5nLXNlYWZvb2QtbGl2ZXN0cmVhbXM_YW1w?oc=5 |

More Consumers Are Shopping Via Mobile amid the Pandemic - eMarketer Posted: 16 Jul 2020 12:44 AM PDT Younger consumers were more likely to feel this way compared with their older cohorts. Nine in 10 respondents ages 25 to 34 said they favored mcommerce, while 78% of 18- to 24-year-olds agreed. Less than one-third of 55- to 64-year-olds said they prefer to shop via mobile, and even fewer respondents (18%) ages 65 and older felt the same way. With many consumers still wary about physical stores, these mobile shopping gains will likely stick post-pandemic. "We expect that the effects of the pandemic will accelerate long-term trends in mobile usage," said Yoram Wurmser, eMarketer principal analyst at Insider Intelligence. "Although some gains with mcommerce and other mobile activities will not last beyond quarantines, the baselines for mobile activities will be higher than they would have been otherwise." This year, the number of US mobile buyers—consumers who have used their mobile device to make at least one purchase via a mobile site or app—will reach 167.8 million, according to our May 2020 forecast. That figure will reach 187.5 million, or two-thirds of the US population, in 2024.
