Haenel -- a key figure in the French #MeToo movement, who last year revealed that she had been sexually harassed by a director as a teenager -- had declared that "distinguishing Polanski is spitting in the face of all victims". "I am proud that I left with my comrades," Merlant said of the dramatic night four months ago, which caused an earthquake in the French industry. - 'It had to happen' - "I think it is good that it caused a stir, that it started a debate. "The world is changing, and going forward," the actress told AFP. "Now we are standing up and we are walking out when things have to change. That announcement came after Beijing passed and implemented a new national security law in Hong Kong. Raab called the move "grave and deeply disturbing." "The enactment and imposition of this national security law constitute a clear and serious breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration," U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Parliament on Wednesday. The Sino-British Joint Declaration signed by then Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher guarantees Hong Kong's autonomy under the "one country, two systems" framework. The city was a British colony for over 150 years before being transferred back to China in 1997. The new national security law is spurring concerns about excessive oversight from Beijing and eroding rights and freedoms in Hong Kong. About 3 million Hong Kongers are eligible for British National (Overseas) passports. There were 357,156 BN(O) passport holders as of April 17. The new measures extend the visa rights of BN(O) passport holders, allowing them to stay in the U.K. for five years with the ability to work or study. That's far greater than the six months previously allowed. After five years, the passport holders will be able to apply for settled status and citizenship, according to information on the U.K. government website. "This is a special, bespoke, set of arrangements developed for the unique circumstances we face and in light of our historic commitment to the people of Hong Kong," said Raab in Parliament. "We want a positive relationship with China. But, we will not look the other way on Hong Kong, and we will not duck our historic responsibilities to its people," he added. The U.S., Australia and Taiwan are also looking into helping those who want to leave Hong Kong. In the U.S., a bipartisan bill known as the "Hong Kong Safe Harbor Act" would grant Hong Kongers priority refugee status. Introduced in both chambers of Congress this week, the bill would enable those who fear political persecution from China to more quickly leave the city. Australia's federal cabinet will look at proposals on how to best help Hong Kongers looking to move Down Under, The Australian reported, citing prime minister Scott Morrison. | Hong Kong arrests hundreds protesting China's national security law - TRT World Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:08 PM PDT Police arrest more than 300 people as protesters hit streets in defiance of sweeping security law introduced by China in the semi-autonomous city. Hong Kong police have arrested more than 300 people –– including nine under China's new national security law –– as thousands defied a ban on protests on the anniversary of the city's handover to China. Police on Wednesday used water cannon, pepper spray and tear gas throughout in a series of confrontations with protesters, a day after China drew global criticism for imposing the controversial legislation on the financial hub. Beijing said the law would restore stability after nearly a year of unrest, but instead it sparked the worst street violence in months. Details released by police accused those arrested under the new legislation of possessing independence flags, stickers, and flyers. Anti-Bejing protests "Advocacy for the independence of Hong Kong is against the law," security minister John Lee told reporters. Still, many of those protesting chanted independence slogans –– itself now against the law. "What this authoritarian regime wants to do is to terrorise the people and stop them from coming out," Chris To, a 49-year-old anti-Beijing protester, told AFP news agency. Hong Kong marks China rule Earlier on Wednesday, Hong Kong's leader strongly endorsed the new security law in her speech marking anniversary of the city's handover from colonial Britain. "This decision was necessary and timely to maintain Hong Kong's stability," Carrie Lam said following a flag-raising ceremony and the playing of China's national anthem. A pro-democracy political party, The League of Social Democrats, organised a protest march during the flag-raising ceremony preceding Lam's speech. About a dozen participants chanted slogans echoing demands from protesters last year for political reform and an investigation into accusation of police abuse. The law's passage on Tuesday further blurs the distinction between the legal systems of semi-autonomous Hong Kong, which maintained aspects of British law after the 1997 handover, and the mainland's authoritarian Communist Party system. Critics say the law effectively ends the "one country, two systems" framework under which Hong Kong was promised a high degree of autonomy. The law directly targets some of the actions of anti-government protesters last year, which included attacks on government offices and police stations, damage to subway stations, and the shutdown of the city's international airport. Acts of vandalism against government facilities or public transit can be prosecuted as subversion or terrorism, while anyone taking part in activities deemed as secessionist would also be in violation of the new law. The law takes immediate effect and its consequences could come swiftly. Hong Kong's police force issued a statement saying they would consider as illegal any flag or banner raised by protesters deemed to be promoting Hong Kong's separation from China or expressing support for independence for Tibet, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and the self-governing island democracy of Taiwan that China claims as its own. Concerns have also been raised over the fate of key opposition figures, some of whom have already been charged for taking part in protests, as well as the disqualification of candidates for the Legislative Council elections scheduled for September. Life imprisonment Under the law, those found guilty of inciting secessionist, subversive, terrorist activities and colluding with foreign forces could face life imprisonment if they are deemed masterminds of such activities. Schools, social groups, media outlets, websites and others unspecified will be monitored and their national security awareness will be raised, according to the text, while China's central government will have authority over the activities of foreign non-governmental organisations and media outlets in Hong Kong. It says central government bodies in Hong Kong will take over in "complicated cases" and when there is a serious threat to national security. Local authorities are barred from interfering with central government bodies operating in Hong Kong while they are carrying out their duties, according to the text. The legislation was mandated under Hong Kong's local constitution but an earlier attempt to pass it in the city's legislative body in 2003 was shelved in the face of massive public opposition. Having lost patience, Beijing finally decided to circumvent the Hong Kong legislature and have it passed on Tuesday by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's rubber-stamp parliament. President Xi Jinping signed a presidential order putting the law into effect and it has been added to the Basic Law, Hong Kong's constitution. Washington reacts The US has already begun moves to end special trade terms given to the territory. The Trump administration has also said it will bar defense exports to Hong Kong and will soon require licenses for the sale of items that have both civilian and military uses, citing the possibility of them falling into the hands of the People's Liberation Army, which owes its loyalty to China's ruling Communist Party. Congress has also moved to impose sanctions on people deemed connected to political repression in Hong Kong, including police officials, while Britain has said it could offer residency and possible citizenship to about 3 million of Hong Kong's 7.5 million people. China has said it will impose visa restrictions on Americans it sees as interfering over Hong Kong. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced the threat of a visa ban as a sign of "how Beijing refuses to take responsibility for its own choices" and said the law's adoption "destroys the territory's autonomy and one of China's greatest achievements." Beijing's "paranoia and fear of its own people's aspirations have led it to eviscerate the very foundation of the territory's success", Pompeo said in a statement. The law's passage comes after Hong Kong's legislature in early June approved a contentious bill making it illegal to insult the Chinese national anthem. Pro-China figures have also been pushing for more "patriotic" education to be introduced into the curriculum in hopes that will boost their identification with Beijing. "I'm all for masks," Trump said in an interview with Fox Business Network. "I think masks are good." Trump, who has resisted wearing a mask in public, questioned whether they should be mandatory because "you have many places in the country where people stay very long distance." But he said he'd wear one if he found himself in a crowd where social distancing wasn't possible. "If I were in a tight situation with people, I would absolutely," he said. Trump said he seldom finds himself in such situations and noted that people are tested for coronavirus before they get close to him. But he said he has worn a mask in cases where he has been with a small group of people. "I sort of liked the way it looked," he said. "It was a dark black mask, and I thought it looked OK. It looked like the Lone Ranger." Sky News and other media said Raab's office also summoned China's embassador Liu Xiaoming to express its deep concern. 'Deeply disturbing' Hong Kong was under UK jurisdiction until Britain handed it to China in 1997 with a guarantee that Beijing would preserve the city's judicial and legislative autonomy for 50 years. But critics say the new law -- passed by Beijing's rubber-stamp parliament this week without its text being released to the public -- tests the limits of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle that formally entered international law in 1984. Britain's last Hong Kong governor called details of the legislation unveiled overnight "even worse than I expected". "It is Orwellian stuff," Chris Patten told the BBC. "It does go wider and further than anybody had feared." Britain's response to China's legislation offers a much smoother pathway to UK citizenship for millions of Hong Kongers. Raab said Hong Kongers with BNO status and their dependents would first have the right to work or study in Britain for five years. They would then have the right to apply for settled status then possible citizenship. He said there would be "no quotas" and described the entire system as "bespoke". "This is a grave and deeply disturbing step," he said of the Chinese law. "China through this national security legislation is not living up to its promises to the people of Hong Kong. We will live up to our promises to them," he told lawmakers. Policy review Britain had opened itself up to closer relations with China as it sought out trading partners after ending its decades-long membership in the European Union this year. Johnson's government also irritated the US administration in January by allowing the private Chinese telecoms group Huawei to unroll Britain's speedy new data network. But Britain is now studying ways it can cut Huawei out of its system entirely and build up an alliance of European and Asian providers that reduces China's dominance in the field. The video has since been deleted, but showed the student and her roommates going out in Gainesville, later testing positive for COVID-19 UF Student Lauren Bouskila, 21, says she thought it was safe to go out, grab a drink, and leave the bar. After feeling sick for a few days, she and her roommates decided to get a drive-thru COVID-19 test. It is not known which bar Bouskila went out to in Gainesville or where exactly she got the virus. "We decided one night just to go out. We were like ok it's safe to go out. Let's go have a drink. We were celebrating, just because we hadn't in a while. After that we started hearing about more cases arising and people getting sick, like things like that," she said. Bouskila decided to get a test before going home for Fathers' Day. Later, she and her roommates received a call letting them know their results came back positive. She says she and her roommates intended to encourage their friends to stay home by making the video. | Dish closes Boost Mobile purchase, following T-Mobile/Sprint merger - TechCrunch Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:44 PM PDT T-Mobile today announced that it has closed a deal that divests Sprint's pre-paid businesses, including Boost and Virgin Mobile. The news finds Dish entering the wireless carrier game in earnest, courtesy of the $1.4 billion deal. The whole thing was, of course, a key part of T-Mobile's bid to merge with Sprint. It was a relatively small concession to those worried that such a deal would decrease competition in the market, as the number of major U.S. carriers shrunk from four down to three. The $26 billion T-Mobile/Sprint deal was finally completed in April of this year, and has already resulted in hundreds of lost jobs, as reported last month by TechCrunch. The deal gives Dish a nice head start in the pre-paid phone game, with north of 9 million customers and access to T-Mobile's wireless network for the next seven years. It also finds current Dish's COO John Swieringa stepping in to lead the new subsidiary. Oh, and there's a new Boost logo, too:  Dish See? | Mask up, Mobile: City requiring face coverings in public - AL.com Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:44 PM PDT Mobile joined a growing number of cities in Alabama Wednesday by mandating people wear a mask or face covering while within city limits during the month of July. The city ordinance passed with a 6-1 vote and concluded close to six hours of discussion and debate spanning the past two days. It also included a few exceptions including outdoor activities in parks and doesn't apply to children ages 10 and under or for people who could suffer "substantial mental or physical health" problems from wearing a mask. Another exemption, according to Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, will be inside restaurants. He said the city will send out a FAQ on Thursday that will provided specifics as to what the ordinance covers, including its start date. Stimpson said he was hopeful it could be implemented on Friday. Mobile joined Tuscaloosa to approve a mask mandate in the past week as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to soar statewide. Alabama added 906 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, and Mobile County – which has set single-day records for new COVID-19 cases in the past week – added another 63. Since the pandemic began in March, Mobile County has had close to 3,700 confirmed cases of the virus which is the third highest in the state behind Jefferson and Montgomery counties. The rash of city ordinances comes after Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, during a news conference Tuesday, said it "would be next to impossible to enforce" a statewide mask-wearing mandate. Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery have mask wearing ordinances in place. Jefferson County instituted its ordinance on Monday. Few, if any, tickets have been issued in cities where there is a mask ordinance and Stimpson said he doesn't anticipate tickets being written in Mobile. He said that the city has ordered a total of 14,000 masks that police plan to distribute to people who do not have one. He said that law enforcement anticipates voluntary compliance to the ordinance, but that ticket-writing will be at a police officer's discretion. Violators will face a $50 fine for a first offense, which is higher than Tuscaloosa's $25 fine. A second-time offender in Mobile will be fined $100. "We have the ability to write the citation," said Stimpson. "There will be someone who will test you. Let's just hope we have voluntary compliance." Council members suggested they have already been tested by ordinance opponents who, in recent days, suggested that some of them were "in the back pocket" of billionaire investor George Soros, whose support for liberal and progressive causes has earned him derision by conservative commentators and the target of conspiracy theories. During Wednesday's meeting, at least one speaker shouted, "This is Nazism" at the council, while another speaker refused to give his name because he was concerned about having "Antifa at my front door." Accusations of "tyranny" and "unconstitutional" were also hurled at the council. Three police officers arrived midway through the meeting to oversee the proceedings. Council members said they were supporting the ordinance to "protect the health and safety" of Mobile residents, not because of a political agenda. Other said they were swayed to support the ordinance after it received overwhelmingly support from the leaders of Mobile County's medical community, including the chief medical officers at the city's four hospitals who spoke in support of the measure during Tuesday's meeting. "The last thing we want to do is have another shutdown of our economy," said Councilwoman Gina Gregory. "We have to protect our businesses, tax revenues and our people at the same time." She added, "We heard from nine doctors (on Tuesday). I heard some people say, 'they must have been bought off by George Soros.' You really think doctors in Mobile, Alabama, were bought off by George Soros?" Stimpson said he had not received similar emails, but added that social media – while having its benefits – can get "things hyped up and maybe overhyped, to a degree." He added, "My hope is there will be peace and calm abut this. The spirit of the city councilors and the way they were expressing (their viewpoints) was a genuine effort and an understanding of both sides of the issue." Councilman John Williams, the only "No" vote on the council, said he doesn't oppose masks and supports private businesses establishing mask policies, such as what is currently in place at Whole Foods and Costco in Mobile. He said his concern was having the city adopt an ordinance he believes is "unenforceable." He said the wording with the ordinance lacked definition such as what constituted a face mask. He also questioned why the ordinance exempted children under 10, and how that age was determined. He also said the ordinance, which requires masks to be worn on "congested sidewalks," could be interpreted in a variety of ways. "I have a definition of a congested sidewalk and my picture is New York on New Year's Eve or Mobile, Alabama, at the MoonPie (Over Mobile) next to the (band) stage," Williams said. "But two to three block away, that might be the application?" Williams, during Tuesday's meeting, requested the council's vote be laid over for one week. Council rules allow a single member to hold a council agenda item for one week after it is first introduced for consideration. The mask ordinance would have then been scheduled for a vote during the council's July 7 meeting, but a majority – at the urging of the medical leaders who spoke on Tuesday – opted to hold a special meeting on Wednesday and get the ordinance adopted before the Fourth of July weekend. The ordinance could be extended into August. Dr. Bernard Eichold, the county's health officer, said he believes 30 days is the "bare minimum," saying that 60 days would offer an "opportunity" for gathering better data. Other cities that have adopted similar ordinances, like Tuscaloosa, have a 30-day window in place as well. "I'm sensitive to proposing mandates on the public and the difficulties likely to enforce it," said Councilman Joel Daves. "We're dealing with something we've never dealt with before. The situations changes as we go from week to week. We know things now we didn't know six weeks ago, and we will know things six weeks from now we don't know today. Public officials have a responsibility to act and to act in a timely manner. (We) may end up looking back on this and deciding it wasn't the right decision." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advocating mask wearing to help prevent the spread of the virus, noting that it spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, talks or raises their voices (shouting or singing, for example). Statistics show that mask wearing is making inroads toward reducing the virus. One analysis published by the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that in states where mask wearing is mandatory in public, the number of new coronavirus cases dropped 25% from June 1-7 to June 15-21. In states where masks are recommended but not required, the number of new cases during those same time periods increased by 84%. A University of Washington computer model also suggests that 33,000 American lives could be saved from Covid-19 between now and Oct. 1 if more people wore masks. However, Christensen, a favourite of former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, has been handed 17 top-flight starts by Frank Lampard this term and is enjoying life in London again. Back in January, Lampard said he would not let the Denmark international leave because he believes he can develop into a top centre-back at Chelsea. "I've never looked anywhere else," Christensen, who has two years left on his contract, told Sky Sports . "I've never doubted my situation. I've always had my eyes at Chelsea. "I've had my contract and I've always expected to finish that and I've always dreamed of even more than that. Nothing has changed. "Obviously it was a different situation last season but I still love being here, that's the short answer."
