In an open letter to the agency, which the researchers plan to publish in a scientific journal next week, 239 scientists in 32 countries outlined the evidence showing smaller particles can infect people, the NYT said. The WHO did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Whether carried by large droplets that zoom through the air after a sneeze, or by much smaller exhaled droplets that may glide the length of a room, the coronavirus is borne through air and can infect people when inhaled, the scientists said, according to the NYT. However, the health agency said the evidence for the virus being airborne was not convincing, according to the NYT. | Australia closes state border for first time in 100 years to halt coronavirus - BNO News Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT  The border between Australia's two most populous states will close from Tuesday for an indefinite period, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said on Monday, following an outbreak of the coronavirus in his state. The decision marks the first time the border with neighbouring New South Wales has been shut in 100 years – officials last blocked movement between the two states in 1919 during the Spanish flu pandemic. The number of COVID-19 cases in Melbourne, Victoria's capital, has surged in recent days, prompting authorities to enforce strict social-distancing orders in 30 suburbs and put nine public housing towers into complete lockdown. The state reported 127 new COVID-19 infections overnight, its biggest one-day spike since the pandemic began. It also reported one death, the first nationally in more than two weeks, taking the country's total tally to 105. "It is the smart call, the right call at this time, given the significant challenges we face in containing this virus," Andrews told reporters in Melbourne as he announced the border closure. The closure will, however, likely be a blow to Australia's economic recovery as it heads into its first recession in nearly three decades. Andrews said the decision to close the border, effective from 11.59 p.m. local time on Tuesday, was made jointly with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Victoria's only other internal border, with South Australia state, is already closed. Australia has fared better than many countries in the coronavirus pandemic, with just short of 8,500 cases so far, but the Melbourne outbreak has raised alarm bells. | Melbourne tower lockdown: What does it mean, how will it work? - 9News Posted: 05 Jul 2020 08:08 PM PDT The strict restrictions are due to a rise in coronavirus cases in the public housing towers, which are home to 1345 units. Victoria recorded 74 new coronavirus cases on Sunday and 108 new cases on Saturday. The high-rise towers have been described by some as "vertical cruise ships", prone to rapid spread of the virus.  How will the lockdown and restrictions be enforced?No one is allowed to enter or exit except for residents returning home, with over 500 Victorian police officers patrolling foyers and corridors. Road blocks have been set up outside the towers. Premier Daniel Andrews has conceded the measures will be "traumatic" for residents. What happens to people who have jobs?The government will provide hardship grants of $1500 for those forced to miss work and anyone who does not have a job will receive $750. Further financial relief will come through rent waivers for the next two weeks. How will residents access essential supplies and services?Baby formula, food and essential medications will be provided, and residents will have access to drug and alcohol support, counselling and domestic violence services. What about laundry and lifts?Residents have been warned they will be fined if they are caught in corridors without permission. There are restrictions on lifts and limits have been set on how many people can be in a shared laundry room at any one time.    How will testing be carried out?Mass testing will be key to determine how long residents will be confined to their rooms. Logistically it would be quite straightforward to rapidly carry out 3000 tests on residents. However, the government cannot force anyone to have a test. Testing can be carried out by swabs of the nose and throat. There is also a saliva test, which is less invasive but also less accurate. Saliva tests can be wrong 13 per cent of the time. What will happen next?Rates of infection will be monitored over the five days of the hard lockdown before the government decides what to do next, including a continuation of the restrictions. Ten other postcodes in Melbourne are currently on stage 3 lockdown. The Australian Financial Review, which is owned by Nine, has today speculated Melbourne's CBD could be the next part of the city to be locked down. Are residents being treated well?Some residents have told 9News there has been a shortage of food and when it did come some was out-of-date. Some residents have complained about not receiving proper health care and essentials like baby formula. People who live in the towers were given no warning of the lockdown. Residents say they understand the need for a lockdown but some complain it has been done unfairly.  Why are these towers in lockdown?On Saturday, when Victoria reported 108 new cases of coronavirus, 23 were from 12 households in these housing estates. Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen said the source of the cluster is not yet known and hundreds of residents may have already been exposed to the virus. Barca celebrated the milestone thanks to teenage sensation Ansu Fati, who came off the bench and scored the team's fourth goal away to Villarreal. The two-time reigning La Liga champions, who are four points behind bitter rivals Real Madrid with four matches remaining, netted their first official goal in April 1909. Just over 111 years later, Barca have scored their 9,000th goal – superstar captain and six-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi contributing 630.
Of Barca's overall tally, 6,165 goals have been scored in La Liga, followed by the Copa del Rey (1,474) and the Champions League (543). The Blaugrana added four goals to their league tally against Villarreal with the first coming in the opening three minutes of the match. | Posted: 05 Jul 2020 06:08 PM PDT CNN's Dana Bash pressed US Food and Drug Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn repeatedly Sunday morning to explain the President's false statement in his Fourth of July speech from the South Lawn of the White House, one that minimized the devastating effects of the virus and seemed to encourage Americans to ignore the deadly risks of a pandemic that has so far claimed more than 129,000 American lives. "I'm not going to get into who is right and who is wrong," Hahn, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, told Bash during CNN's "State of the Union" when she asked him to explain the basis for the President's claim and why he would be pushing the narrative that most Covid-19 cases are harmless when his public health experts are saying the opposite. "What I'll say is that we have data in the White House task force. Those data show us that this is a serious problem. People need to take it seriously," the FDA chief said, after Bash asked him for the fourth time to correct the misinformation from the President.  Hahn's refusal to specifically address Trump's misleading claim underscored the growing trust gap between Americans and this administration. Hahn apparently was afraid to correct the President -- a pattern that has repeated itself over and over again in an administration where disagreeing with or undercutting Trump has cost many appointees their jobs. If Trump officials are afraid to correct basic facts in the midst of a pandemic -- where the President seems to believe his reelection campaign is contingent on his ability to deliver good news about an economic revival and finding a vaccine to stop the spread of the virus -- can Americans trust the information coming from Trump and the administration about the safety and effectiveness of a potential vaccine later this year or next? Only 26% of registered voters trusted Trump to give accurate information about the coronavirus, according to last month's New York Times/Siena College poll; about 77% of registered voters trusted the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While Hahn urged Americans to follow the guidance from the CDC and public health experts -- noting that if they do not follow the guidelines from the CDC they are putting themselves and "your loved ones at risk" -- he did not delve into the statistics that better explain why the President's 99% claim is so misleading.  The US case fatality rate from coronavirus stood at 4.6% on Saturday when the President made the claim, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The CDC estimates that a third of coronavirus cases are asymptomatic, but that does not make the disease any less threatening since people with mild or no symptoms can pass the virus on to others. Beyond that, the World Health Organization has said that 20% of all people who are diagnosed with coronavirus are sick enough to need oxygen or hospital care. And cities like Los Angeles, Houston and other parts of Texas, Arizona and Florida are watching their hospitals fill up with Covid-19 cases as the virus spikes in those hotspots, once again raising concern about the availability of intensive care unit beds. "We need to accept the fact that we're in the second wave right now," former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said Sunday during CBS's "Face the Nation." "It's not a clear line of sight on how we're going to get this under control."
