WA brand behind cheekily named viral hot sauce set to ride 'Australian Made' wave - Sydney Morning Herald

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:47 AM PDT

A few years ago the green-and-gold 'Australian Made' logo wasn't enough to convince the everyday shopper to prioritise their tastebuds over their wallet.

But COVID-19 has changed that, according to the creator of one of Australia's best-known hot sauces.

Bunster's sauce company founder Renae Bunster.

Perth woman Renae Bunster's cheekily named S--- the Bed hot sauce has gone viral several times since its launch in 2015, gaining cult status in Australia and overseas.

It has even topped the list of most popular hot sauces on Amazon, but even Ms Bunster couldn't predict the coronavirus-driven jump in sales across her range.

Since the pandemic hit, Bunster's sales doubled to about $400,000 or five tonnes of sauce. More than half of that was in the US.

Ms Bunster put that jump down to the company's online focus, as well as more people trying to jazz up their "crappy" home cooking.

She said as the pandemic wore on, people placed more value on Australian-made products using Australian ingredients.

With that behaviour change in mind, Ms Bunster turned her attention to the rest of the condiment shelf and has launched a crowdfunding campaign to ride the wave of Australian-made popularity.

"We're Australian, our sauce is made in Australia, by Australian people, using Aussie ingredients and our money stays on Aussie soil," she said.

"We realised to create more products you need more money and we've seen this opportunity with the Australian-made bandwagon and saw all these foreign products in my cupboard.

"We want to make a condiment for everyone. There are no fantastic condiments in Australia.

"I've made a fancy barbecue sauce with truffle oil and cacao. I want to do that for every category."

The Birchal crowdfunding campaign raised $300,000 before it was opened to the public, smashing Ms Bunster's $100,000 goal. The money will go toward developing new sauces and expanding the company into new markets such as Europe.

She went down the crowdfunding route to avoid corporatisation of her brand and give her fans the opportunity to become future sauce testers.

"We want to do more without us to go to private equity who tell us to go offshore or use cheaper ingredients," Ms Bunster said.

'I am president, coach and player' - Ibrahimovic says Milan would win Scudetto if they signed him earlier - Goal.com

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:42 AM PDT

Zlatan Ibrahimovic cheekily claimed Milan would have won Serie A had he signed at the start of the season as their upturn in form continued with a remarkable 4-2 win over Juventus.

Ibrahimovic returned to Milan – where he previously won the Scudetto in 2011 – as a free agent in January after leaving MLS and the LA Galaxy.

The 38-year-old striker is still having an impact in Italy's top flight and took his goal tally in his latest Milan stint to six when he scored from the penalty spot against Juve on Tuesday.

Article continues below

That strike halved a two-goal deficit after efforts from Adrien Rabiot and Cristiano Ronaldo and improbably propelled Milan to a come-from-behind success, with Franck Kessie, Rafael Leao and Ante Rebic also on target.

A three-goal flurry within five minutes helped shrink that deficit, with Rebic scoring the game's final goal to seal an 18-minute span of dominance for Milan.

With the victory, Milan are up to fifth and have beaten title rivals Lazio and Juve in consecutive matches, leading a grinning star veteran Ibrahimovic to make a typically outlandish declaration.

Ibrahimovic told DAZN: "If I was here from the beginning of the season, we would have won the Scudetto!"

Ibrahimovic has been hailed as a role model for his Milan team-mates and added: "I am president, coach and player, but they only pay me as a footballer."

The former Sweden international is out of contract at the end of the season, however, and he acknowledges he may not appear in front of a full San Siro again.

"There is still a month, so let's see," Ibrahimovic said amid growing speculation head coach Stefano Pioli will be replaced by Ralf Rangnick. "There are things that we cannot in control.

"Playing without fans is a pity, a strange situation. We do our job, we are professionals. It could have been the last time they have seen me live in San Siro."

The forward's first stint with Milan came between 2011-12, where he scored 56 goals in 85 appearances before making the move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Up next for Milan is a visit to Napoli on Sunday.

Cristiano Ronaldo looking to achieve goal-scoring holy grail - AS English

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:42 AM PDT

Cristiano Ronaldo has few frontiers left to conquer in the world football record books. The Portuguese has win the Euros, five Champions Leagues, five Ballon d'Ors, three The Best awards and four Golden Boots. He also has an long list of individual awards and is the highest scoring Real Madrid player in history and nobody has ever scored more than him in the Champions League either.

Despite all of these awards, Ronaldo remains hungry and has the top goalscorer in Serie A in his sights. If he does manage this feat, he will become the only player to finish as the top scorer in the Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A. Only Ruud van Nistlerooy and Luis Suárez have won the top scoring title in three leagues but nobody has done it in three of Europe's top five leagues.

Badge/Flag Juventus

Van Nistelrooy was the top scorer in 2006-07 in Spain and in England, he finished as the Premier League's top scorer in 2002-03. He also finished as the top scorer in the Eredivisie in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 with PSV. Luis Suárez achieved the same feat but with Liverpool, Barcelona and Ajax. in 2013-14, 2009-10 and then in 2015-16 in LaLiga.

Immobile also in the race for top scorer in Serie A

In his first season in Italy, he finished fourth. Fabio Quagliarella, Duván Zapata and Piatek all scored more. Currently, he is chasing Ciro Immobile, who has 29 goals. Ronaldo has 25. The Portuguese has scored in four games in a row post-lockdown and is on a roll. He has also broken an almost 60-year-old record at The Old Lady after becoming the first player since 1961 to score 25 times in a season.

If Ronaldo continues on his goalscoring spree, he has a chance to topple Immobile at the top of the goal-scoring charts. On Tuesday, he has another chance to close the gap as Sarri's side play Milan. Lazio play against Lecce.

'I feel threatened!': Florida man's viral outburst over Costco's mask policy costs him his job at insurance company - USA TODAY

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:47 PM PDT

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A raging mask debate during  an incident at a Florida Costco was captured on video June 27 and went viral Monday night with almost 10 million views. The tirade cost a man his job.

A man wearing a red, "Running the world since 1776" T-shirt, dark shorts and flip flops was seen yelling "I feel threatened!" and "Back up! Back the (expletive) up and put your (expletive) phone down!" He glared at the camera after a female shopper had asked him to comply with Costco's mask policy.

Another man took out his cellphone and captured the yelling.

Billy Corben, a Fort Myers native and documentary filmmaker who lives in Miami, had obtained the video from the man who filmed it Monday. The man who filmed it declined to be identified. Corben tweeted the video to his 82,000 followers. He often shares outlandish stories and videos with the hashtag #BecauseFlorida.

Other incidents: Target shopper wearing '$40,000 Rolex' destroys face mask display, while Costco shopper protests mask policy

By Tuesday, the man yelling in the video had been identified by Ted Todd Insurance as Daniel Maples. Maples had been with the agency since 2016 and "is currently the highest-producing sales agent in the company… Likes: Hot yoga, traveling, cooking and mentoring others," according to his biography.

By midday Tuesday, Maples' bio had been pulled from the site and the agency released a statement: It had fired Maples.

Law enforcement was not involved in the incident.

Face mask requirements: Can stores make you wear a mask? Do kids have to wear masks?

"Thank you to everyone for their comments and messages raising awareness about a former employee at Ted Todd Insurance," the statement from Charley Todd said. "Their behavior in the video is in direct conflict with our company values and their employment has been terminated. Threatening behavior and intimidation go against our core mission to be trusted advisors in our community. We are also committed to immediately reviewing our internal existing culture at TTI."

Attempts to reach Maples on a phone number found in a public records search were not successful.

'Wearing a mask is not about fear': Retailer group urges governors to require everyone to wear a mask

Richard Galanti, chief financial officer for Costco, declined to comment on the incident but addressed mask-wearing in general in the 547 Costco stores across the country and the 250 international locations.

"Overall, the mask requirement has been well received," Galanti said. "There have been some who have chosen not to shop here. But overall, the majority of the people have been supportive of it. We believe it's to help slow the spread of the virus. If we're right, we're right. If we're not right, it's a relatively small inconvenience. We're not trying to challenge anybody's constitutional rights.

He added, "All of these things were not done to help our business. We were trying to be responsible. We know there are differing viewpoints, but certainly our employees appreciate it. We have over 2 million people come into Costco every day. If someone comes in without a mask, we just ask them to leave."

'He is desperate for goals' - Lampard hopes Abraham goal provides confidence boost - Goal

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:42 PM PDT

Tammy Abraham's decisive goal against Crystal Palace will be a huge boost to his confidence, says Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

Chelsea won a Selhurst Park thriller 3-2 on Tuesday, the 22-year-old scoring what proved to be a pivotal third goal for the visitors, his first strike since the Premier League's resumption.

Ahead of the match, Lampard had urged Abraham to focus on his faltering form as opposed to a new contract, amid speculation over where he fits in the club's long-term plans ahead of Timo Werner's arrival.

The striker had not scored since January 11 and lost his starting place upon the post-coronavirus restart, but Lampard was buoyed by his cool 71st-minute finish shortly after coming on for Olivier Giroud.

"It will be really important for Tammy because he is desperate for goals," Lampard told the media.

"He hadn't scored for a while. It helps his confidence and it is good for me. It gives me other options.

"He came on late in the game, he scores the winning goal and I'm pleased for my strikers."

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who tipped Scott Dann's last-gasp header onto the post, was praised by Lampard, along with defender Kurt Zouma after his last-ditch tackle in a dramatic finish to proceedings.

Palace made it an uncomfortable outing for Chelsea with Wilfried Zaha scoring a wonder-strike, leaving Lampard to concede his team should have managed the game better.

"We should have had the game done at 2-0," he said. "We should have controlled the game better and then at 3-2 we had good chances to finish off.

"With some slight wrong decisions maybe in the final third or final shot, and then it invites pressure.

Article continues below

"Kepa makes a great save, Kurt makes a great tackle. But in those last moments it was nervous for us."

The win increased Chelsea's chances of earning a top-four finish in the Premier League. With Leicester City drawing at Arsenal, the Blues move up to third in the table.

Chelsea are set to face Sheffield United on Saturday before then hosting Norwich City at Stamford Bridge three days later.

NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde Sets Goal Of 50% Diverse Workforce - Deadline

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:42 PM PDT

Cesar Conde, the new chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, outlined a workforce goal of 50% diversity on Tuesday, telling employees that as "a news organization we have a unique responsibility to reflect the country and all of the communities we serve."

"The NBCUniversal News Group is not going to wait for change to happen and just react to it.  We're going to lead," he said in a video to employees on Tuesday. "As a news organization, we have a unique responsibility to look like and reflect all of the people of the country we serve."

He said that the goal is for 50% of the news organization employees to be women and 50% of their total workforce be people of color, with plans to boost recruitment and education programs and to invest in more documentaries and investigative content focusing on communities of color. The 50% goal is long term, with no exact date set to reach it, but he said that progress would be reported publicly every year.

Conde said that the workforce of the entities he oversees – NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC – is 26.5% diverse.

"That's better than most in our industry – but it is not good enough," he said. The workforce currently is 8% Black, 8% Hispanic, 8% Asian, 2% multi-racial and less than 1% Native American. When it comes to gender, he said that their workforce is nearly 50% women.

He said that the goal will be to increase diversity in front of and behind the camera and to "earn the trust of every community in America that relies on us for exceptional journalism." he said.

"I don't want us to just be good enough in this moment. I want us to be the best, and to have others look to our practices, our creativity and our ingenuity and say, 'That's the model we want to replicate. They are the best and we want to be like them,'" he said.

The plan includes increasing openings in their "pipeline programs," like news associates, as well as "broadening our searches to ensure we reach more candidates of color." At NBC News and MSNBC, the plan also includes such things as hiring 50 staff roles and decreasing the reliance on freelancers, and tripling the number of regional reporters.

"We will put an emphasis at the senior producer level as well as entry level to ensure we are building a strong pipeline of future leaders and highly qualified individuals," he said. "And we recognize that to create economic diversity within our ranks, we will need to be creative in compensating Interns, News Associates and entry level employees."

The plan also includes boosting education programs, via NBCUniversity, with an "online curriculum of master classes (at no charge) to aspiring journalists and producers (inside and outside our organization) who have not had the benefit of getting exposure to our business via school or internships."

He said that they will be asking teams at NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC to create longform content focusing on Black America and other communities of color.

"These are not only Black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American issues," he said. "They are simply American issues. A better understanding of the history, impact and experience of others makes us all smarter and stronger."

At NBC News and MSNBC, the goal is for 50% women among guests and experts, and to 40% people of color. At CNBC, the plan includes permanently increasing representation by at least 10% "in anchors, reporters, guests, contributors, sources and Prime talent to better reflect qualified candidate pools," according to slides outlining the action plan.

He also said that the network would look to partner with people and organizations outside the company for projects, with the National Urban League and Black Girls Who Code cited as examples, and to work more with vendors owned by women and people of color.

Conde said that their progress toward the 50% goal will be reported annually and that diversity would become part of management's performance metrics.

"Currently, when we review and compensate our management team, we take into account important performance metrics such as ratings and operating cash flow," he said. "Starting with our next assessments in early 2021, we will add progress on diversity to the performance metrics of the leadership team."

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:47 PM PDT

An absolutely adorable video of a chimpanzee bottle-feeding milk to a lion cub is doing the rounds of Twitter and is swiftly going viral. Susanta Nanda of the Indian Forest Services shared the eleven-second clip on Twitter and it has already been viewed over 89,000 times.

In the clip, the chimpanzee held a feeding bottle as the cub drank milk from it. In a pure act of love, the chimpanzee also kissed the cub on its head as it drank milk to its heart's content from the bottle.

"The kiss of the foster mother at the end," Susanta Nanda said in the caption of his post.

Watch the video here:

The internet, needless to mention, has been watching the video on loop as it has garnered almost 8,000 likes so far.

"Heart has melted," a user said in the comments section. Another user added, "A mother's love sees no limits, bounds, colour or species. It only wants to nurture, comfort and help seeing its own child in all children."

Juventus lets 2-goal lead slip in 4-2 loss at Milan - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:42 PM PDT

MILAN (AP) -- Juventus missed the chance to take a big step toward a ninth successive Serie A title as it let a two-goal lead slip away in a surprising 4-2 loss at AC Milan on Tuesday.

After second-place Lazio lost 2-1 at relegation-threatened Lecce earlier, Juventus could have extended its lead at the top of the table to 10 points with a win.

''We had 60 good minutes. We were in control of the game, then there was a blackout. No need to dwell on that as we have another match in a few days,'' Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri said.

''It has happened to other teams, because this is a difficult time for everyone, physically and mentally. We must remain calm, also because the reasons for certain situations are difficult to find.''

Milan moved up to fifth, boosting its chances of securing a Europa League spot.

''If I had been here from the first day, we would have won the title,'' said Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who arrived in January.

A tight first half finished scoreless after Ibrahimovic had a goal ruled out for offside shortly before the break.

But Adrien Rabiot broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart by curling a strike into the top right corner. And Cristiano Ronaldo doubled Juve's lead six minutes later.

However, Milan turned the match around in the space of five minutes.

First Ibrahimovic converted a penalty in the 62nd minute following a handball from Leonardo Bonucci. Then came quickfire goals from Franck Kessie and substitute Rafael Leao.

Milan extended its advantage 10 minutes from full time when Giacomo Bonaventura capitalized on an error from Juventus defender Alex Sandro to set up Ante Rebic.

CAPITAL DISAPPOINTMENT

Lecce missed a penalty and also had a goal disallowed, but still managed an upset win over title-chasing Lazio.

Fabio Lucioni and Khouma Babacar scored for Lecce after Felipe Caicedo had given Lazio an early lead.

Lazio's bad night was made worse when defender Patric was sent off for biting Giulio Donati in an incident that could lead to a lengthy ban.

Lazio was just a point behind Juventus when the season was halted because of the coronavirus pandemic. It was on a record unbeaten run of 21 straight matches but the capital side has lost three of its five matches since the season resumed.

''The break penalized us, we are not the same as before, especially on a mental level. However, this is not an excuse, but just a fact,'' Lazio forward Ciro Immobile said. ''But we have to finish the season well, also to not cancel everything good we have done in the last few months.''

Lecce moved out of the relegation zone, a point above Genoa, which hosts Napoli on Wednesday.

Lecce thought it had taken the lead after two minutes through Marco Mancosu but it was ruled out for handball in the buildup.

Instead, Lazio took the lead moments later when Lecce goalkeeper Gabriel slipped under pressure from Immobile. He still managed to parry the first Lazio attempt but Caicedo hit the rebound into an empty net.

Lecce leveled on the half hour mark when Babacar was left unmarked, eight yards out, to head in Filippo Falco's cross.

The home side had a great chance to take the lead in first-half stoppage time but Mancosu blasted a penalty over the bar, following handball from Patric.

However, Lecce did go in front two minutes after the break when Lucioni headed in a corner.

Gabriel atoned for his early error with several saves to keep Lecce in front, including stopping Bobby Adekanye's header from point-blank range, four minutes from time.

- Yahoo!

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:34 PM PDT

This is our new world"というフレーズから、"W"の文字を取り入れた"ドライブダンス"を決めた。 URL:https://ift.tt/2BvfwAX

Mary Trump's scathing book claims Trump paid someone to take his SATs - CNN

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Mary Trump's book, "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man," accuses Donald Trump's father of creating a toxic family dynamic that best explains how the President acts today. Mary Trump, whose father, Freddy Trump, died following struggles with alcoholism, writes that she could "no longer remain silent" following the past three years of Trump's presidency.
Too Much and Never Enough by Mary L. Trump from Simon & Schuster
"Donald, following the lead of my grandfather and with the complicity, silence and inaction of his siblings, destroyed my father. I can't let him destroy my country," Mary Trump wrote in the book, a copy of which was obtained by CNN.
Mary Trump writes that some of the book is based on her own memory, and in parts she reconstructed some dialogue based on what she was told by some members of the family and others, as well as legal documents, bank statements, tax returns and other documents.
Mary Trump's book is the second tell-all in as many months to present a withering portrait of the President -- and like former national security adviser John Bolton, her book sparked an unsuccessful legal campaign to stop its publication. Mary Trump's book doesn't include explosive accusations about Trump's actions in the Oval Office like Bolton's, but it adds rich details to the portrait of how Trump became the self-styled real estate tycoon and media celebrity which he parlayed into the presidency, largely through the financial backing and support of his father.
The explosive tell-all book by Trump's niece is coming out two weeks earlier than expected
White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews said in a statement that the book "is clearly in the author's own financial self-interest."
"President Trump has been in office for over three years working on behalf of the American people -- why speak out now? The President describes the relationship he had with his father as warm and said his father was very good to him. He said his father was loving and not at all hard on him as a child," Matthews said.
The book comes at a challenging time in Trump's presidency as he struggles to contain the coronavirus pandemic and presides over a country reckoning with systemic racism. He also trails his 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden in recent polling.
Mary Trump, a licensed clinical psychologist, offers both her take on Trump's actions in the White House -- charging he's shown "a blatant display of sociopathic disregard for human life" over the coronavirus pandemic -- as well as episodes throughout Trump's business career, Trump's handling of her father's struggle with alcoholism and dysfunction and infighting within the family. She writes that Trump's father, Fred Trump, "dismantled his oldest son," Freddy Trump, Mary's father and Trump's brother.
"The only reason Donald escaped the same fate is that his personality served his father's purpose. That's what sociopaths do: they co-opt others and use them toward their own ends--ruthlessly and efficiently, with no tolerance for dissent or resistance," Mary Trump writes.
She writes at length about how she sees Trump, comparing him to a three-year-old, saying he "knows he has never been loved" and arguing that Trump's "ego is a fragile thing that must be bolstered every moment because he knows deep down that he is nothing of what he claims to be."
She even claimed that Trump even paid someone to take the SAT tests for him to help him get into the University of Pennsylvania. Trump was "worried that his grade point average, which put him far from the top of his class, would scuttle his efforts to get accepted."
She writes that he enlisted "a smart kid with a reputation for being a good test taker, to take his SATs for him," adding the test-taker was compensated for the effort.
"Donald, who never lacked for funds, paid his buddy well," Mary Trump writes.
Trump initially attended Fordham University in New York as an undergraduate before transferring to Penn's Wharton School.
Matthews said in a statement that the SAT allegation was "absurd" and "completely false."

'It might be useful to have a close relative on the bench'

Investigation into Trump's sister ends with her retirement
Mary Trump says that she didn't take her uncle's run for president seriously at first, and didn't think Donald Trump did either.
" 'He's a clown,' my aunt Maryanne said during one of our regular lunches at the time. 'This will never happen,' " Mary Trump wrote.
During the campaign, Mary Trump says her aunt, former federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry, accused Donald Trump of using Freddy Trump's death "for political purposes" by citing it while addressing the opioids crisis.
Mary Trump also claims that Donald Trump helped his sister to obtain an open seat in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, through his friend and lawyer, Roy Cohn.
"Maryanne thought it would be a great fit, and Donald thought it might be useful to have a close relative on the bench in a state in which he planned to do a lot of business," she writes. "Cohn gave Attorney General Ed Meese a call, and Maryanne was nominated in September and confirmed in October."
Mary Trump also noted in the book her aunt Maryanne insisted she earned her judgeship on her own merit.
CNN has reached out to representatives of Trump Barry for comment.
Trump Barry wouldn't have ruled on any cases directly related to the Trump Organization or her family. After her service on the district court, she was elevated to a federal appeals court by President Bill Clinton in 1999. In 2018, the judiciary investigated whether she broke judicial conduct rules related to financial transactions in the 1980s and 1990s.
She retired in 2019, ending the investigation before it reached any conclusions.

'Undermine an adversary'

Mary Trump reveals how she became a top source for The New York Times
Trump's niece describes what she says is the psychological hold that Fred Trump, the President's father, had over his children, particularly Freddy and Donald. She writes how lying in order to please and appease their father was "a way of life," and how Donald essentially watched his older brother Fred's failings to adapt and become his father's favored son.
Freddy had a brief and tumultuous career as a pilot for TWA in the early 1960s, just before Mary was born. This came after Freddy left the Trump company after he was supposed to become heir to the family business. Mary writes that Fred saw her father's decision to leave Trump Management to become a pilot as "a betrayal, and he had no intention of letting his oldest son forget it."
The way Mary Trump tells it, Freddy's fraught relationship with their father left an opening which Donald saw and took advantage of. According to Mary, the underlying message of this early brotherly competition Fred fostered was one of winning.
"Whether Donald understood the underlying message or not, Fred did: in family, as in life, there could be only one winner; everybody else had to lose," she writes.
The stormy relationship she describes between Fred and Freddy Trump seem to echo accounts of how Donald, Freddy's younger brother, expects undying loyalty from those around him and seeks control over those people's lives and decisions.
Freddy, Mary writes, would tell friends about the "constant barrage of abuse" he was receiving from his father after getting the job at TWA.
"Donald may not have understood the origin of their father's contempt for Freddy and his decision to become a professional pilot, but he had the bull's unerring instinct for finding the most effective way to undermine an adversary," Mary Trump writes.
She also traced some of Donald Trump's current behavior back to his childhood, enabled by his father.
"Donald began to realize that there was nothing he could do wrong, so he stopped trying to do anything 'right.' He became bolder and more aggressive because he was rarely challenged or held to account by the only person in the world who mattered -- his father," Mary writes.
Mary Trump described her own father's death from a heart attack at age 42 as a regretful episode that illustrated the dysfunctional family dynamics of her grandfather and uncle. Despite having long-standing financial ties to nearby hospitals -- including a whole wing named for the Trump family at Jamaica Hospital -- no one sought medical help for her father, who had suffered from alcoholism and a faulty heart valve, for weeks as he was ailing in their family home.
"A single phone call would have guaranteed the best treatment for their son at either facility. No call was made," she writes.

'Master of the universe'

Mary Trump recounts the President's rise to prominence in New York real estate as largely the result of Fred Trump's financial and behind-the-scenes support, which she said was necessary to compensate for Donald's shortcomings.
She also traces what she views as an aptitude toward authoritarians to Donald Trump's earlier days working with famed lawyer Roy Cohn in the 1980s.
At the same time, she recounts Trump's apparent disinterest at her father's decline into depression and alcoholism, which she characterizes as spurred partly by her grandfather's decision to elevate Donald instead of Freddy as his right-hand man and successor.
Throughout, Mary Trump portrays the support Donald received from his father as critical to his attempts to create a brand for himself as a "master of the universe" with a preternatural ability for business.
"His comfort with portraying that image, along with his father's favor and the material security his father's wealth afforded him, gave him the unearned confidence to pull off what even at the beginning was a charade: selling himself not just as a rich playboy but as a brilliant, self-made businessman," she writes. "In those early days, that expensive endeavor was being enthusiastically, if clandestinely, funded by my grandfather."
As she tracks Donald's rise in his father's company, she also identifies some of the origins of his current behaviors, be it dishonesty or a lack of empathy. She cites Cohn, who had worked on Sen. Joseph McCarthy's committee investigating alleged communist activity in the US, as a formative model.
"Fred had also primed Donald to be drawn to men such as Cohn, as he would later be drawn to authoritarians such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un or anyone else, really, with a willingness to flatter and the power to enrich him," she writes.
Mary Trump writes she believed Trump's father helped create who the President became, giving him the false impression of success by propping up many failed endeavors.
"Donald was to my grandfather what the border wall has been for Donald: a vanity project funded at the expense of more worthy pursuits," she writes.

Fight over Fred Trump's will

Mary Trump says she was cut out of her grandfather Fred's will as a result of her father's death, which sparked a years' long legal battle. She writes that Robert Trump, her uncle and Donald Trump's younger brother, explained to her that she was largely excluded because her father died of alcoholism, and wasn't around to inherit a share of the fortune. The grandfather also hated Mary Trump's mother.
Because of these disputes, Mary Trump and her brother ended up suing the Trump family, reaching a settlement that included the non-disclosure agreement that arose up during the book rollout.
Mary Trump also accused Donald Trump of trying to "steal vast sums of money from his siblings" by secretly trying to change his ailing father's will to write his siblings out of control of the family's fortune.
According to the book, after Maryanne Trump Barry and her husband had a lawyer look into it, the Trump family patriarch's will was rewritten so the four siblings including Donald would have power over the estate and receive equal amounts.
"Maryanne would say years later, 'We would have been penniless. Elizabeth would have been begging on a street corner. We would have had to beg Donald if we wanted a cup of coffee.' It was 'sheer luck' that they had stopped the scheme," Mary Trump writes.
The book also provides other colorful, sometimes lighter, observations of the Trump family dynamic, such as a description of Christmas gifts she received from Donald and Ivana. One year, Mary Trump writes they gave her a three-pack of underwear from Bloomingdales. Another year, they gave her an obviously re-gifted basket with crackers, sardines and a salami -- with an imprint in the cellophane wrap where a tin of caviar had been.

Legal battle over book's publication

Mary Trump's book is being published two weeks early by Simon & Schuster on July 14, amid high demand following a court battle over its release. The publisher has already printed 75,000 copies of the book, according to court filings.
After the book was disclosed last month, the President's younger brother Robert Trump took legal action to block its publication. Robert Trump briefly won an injunction against Mary Trump and Simon & Schuster in New York State Supreme Court, but an appellate court lifted the temporary restraining order against the publisher the next day.
The restraining order is still in place against Mary Trump, so she is unable to comment publicly.
Her spokesman, Chris Bastardi, said Monday: "The act by a sitting president to muzzle a private citizen is just the latest in a series of disturbing behaviors."
CNN's Kevin Liptak, Michael Warren, Clare Foran, Holmes Lyband, Betsy Klein, Tara Subramaniam, Marshall Cohen, Katelyn Polantz and Maegan Vazquez contributed to this report.

ICE: International students will have to leave country if in-person classes are online only - KSAT San Antonio

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

WASHINGTON, D.C.Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Monday that international students, or nonimmigrant students within the United States, are prohibited from taking a full course of study through online classes. If they do, they risk losing their visa and being deported.

ICE's decision argues that visa requirements for students have always been strict and taking online-only courses has been prohibited.

Additionally, even if international students elect to take in-person classes, there is no guarantee universities will be able to continue to offer them throughout the semester or year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ICE says that if students find themselves in this situation, "they must leave the country or take alternative steps to maintain their nonimmigrant status such as a reduced course load or appropriate medical leave."

International students may have to leave their colleges if in-person classes are not an option for the fall semester.

Due to COVID-19, ICE's Student and Exchange Visitor Program instituted a temporary exemption regarding online courses for the spring and summer semesters. The policy permitted nonimmigrant students to take more online courses than normally permitted by federal regulation to maintain their nonimmigrant status during the COVID-19 emergency.

Harvard announced it is going to deliver all course instruction online and other universities are following suit, which creates a challenge for many pursuing their degrees in the U.S. from foreign countries.

Temporary exemptions for the fall 2020 semester include:

  1. Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status. If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings.
  2. Nonimmigrant F-1 students attending schools operating under normal in-person classes are bound by existing federal regulations. Eligible F students may take a maximum of one class or three credit hours online.
  3. Nonimmigrant F-1 students attending schools adopting a hybrid model—that is, a mixture of online and in-person classes—will be allowed to take more than one class or three credit hours online. These schools must certify to SEVP, through the Form I-20, "Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status," certifying that the program is not entirely online, that the student is not taking an entirely online course load this semester, and that the student is taking the minimum number of online classes required to make normal progress in their degree program. The above exemptions do not apply to F-1 students in English language training programs or M-1 students pursing vocational degrees, who are not permitted to enroll in any online courses.

Thandie Newton Recalls Conversation With Amy Pascal That The Actress Says Helped Convince Her To Turn Down ‘Charlie’s Angels’ - Deadline

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:48 PM PDT

In an incredibly frank conversation with Vulture, actress Thandie Newton spoke about her decision to turn down a part in the remake of Charlie's Angels starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and, in the role that Newton was considered for, Lucy Liu.

Newton said she was "massively affected" by the abuse, racism and objectification she encountered after she began working as an actress at age 16. Newton said she encountered "people that were doing the same [abusive] sh*t, and so I would challenge them or want to get out of it, or not want to work with people."

One of those people, according to Newton, was former co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and chairman of that studio's Motion Picture Group, Amy Pascal.

Newton:

I had a meeting with her, and she said, "Look, I don't mean to be politically incorrect, but the character as written and you playing the role, I just feel like we've got to make sure that it's believable." I was like, "What do you mean? What changes would you have to make?" She's like, "Well, you know, the character, as written, she's been to university and is educated." I'm like, "I've been to university. I went to Cambridge." She went, "Yeah, but you're different." She's like, "Maybe there could be a scene where you're in a bar and she gets up on a table and starts shaking her booty." She's basically reeling off these stereotypes of how to be more convincing as a Black character. Everything she said, I was like, "Nah, I wouldn't do that." She's like, "Yeah, but you're different. You're different." That was Amy Pascal.

Approached by Vulture about Newton's account, Pascal said she was "horrified to hear" the characterization of their meeting.

"While I take her words seriously," said Pascal, "I have no recollection of the events she describes, nor do any of her representatives who were present at that casting session." The former Sony boss then added, "I've long considered Thandie a friend; I'm thankful that I've had the chance to make movies with her; and I hope to work with her again in the future."

In 2015, Pascal stepped down from her position at Sony Pictures after and email hack revealed racially insensitive emails between Pascal and producer Scott Rudin about President Obama. In the private exchange, the two joked that the President's favorite films were black-themed movies like Django Unchained and 12 Years A Slave.

Newton said a conversation with the director of Charlie's Angels, McG, also influenced her decision no tot do the film.

"The director said to me, 'I can't wait for this. The first shot is going to be…You're going to think it's like yellow lines down a road, and you pull back and you realize it's the stitching, because the denim is so tight on your a** it's going to look like tarmac.' I was like, 'Oh, I don't think we're going to go down this road together.'"

It was a consequential decision for Newton who, at the time, was still establishing herself as an actress in Hollywood. Charlie's Angels went on to make over $200 million worldwide. The 2003 sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, in which Newton may have also starred, earned even more.

'Charlie Bit Me' brothers recreate viral video after 13 years - the original has over 875 million views - Times Now

In 2007, a simple home video of two young brothers Charlie and Harry had created waves on YouTube for its sheer cuteness.

The video, popularly known all over the world as 'Charlie Bit Me', was at one point one of YouTube's most-watched videos.

Harry Davies-Carr, who was aged three at that time, and Charlie David-Carr, who was aged one, were innocently sitting on a couch when their father thought it would be fun to film the kids.

As the camera rolled, older brother Harry put his finger inside CHarlie's mouth. And the little one decided to chomp down on his brother's finger.

What followed was a cute reaction of pain in pure British accent from Harry. At one point, he shouted and said the line 'Charlie Bit Me'.

Watch it here:

Since them, the video racked up 875 million views on YouTube.

It's 2020 now and Harry and Charlie are now 17 years old and 14 years old respectively. Recently, the two recreated their viral moment for the internet audience.

Recalling the viral fame of the boys, mother Shelly Davies-Car said she couldn't believe how her tiny hoe went viral around the world. She added that not even singer Susan Boyle has had hits like her family.

"Susan Boyle has never had the hits we have had. The video got on to a college networking site in the U.S. and from there it went viral. I think the British accents have helped make it so globally viewed," Shelly told The Times.

After the video became a rage on social media since 2007, the boys' parents reportedly made tens of thousands of pounds from it through advertising and sponsorship deals.

"There are an awful lot of unscrupulous people out there who will try and take advantage of people that don't understand what they have. When the boys get to 18, I'd like them to think back and think, 'O.K., I've got something in my life which is more than just what I was when I did the 'Charlie Bit Me' video," the father Howard Davies-Carr told ABC News.

The boys had featured in another recreation video three years ago,

Kingston.

(dpa)

Statement from President Price on Student Visa Directive - Duke Today

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

We are deeply concerned about the Administration's new immigration directive that will limit the ability of qualified students and scholars to begin or continue their studies in the United States.  This is a misguided effort that will only harm talented young people and the colleges and universities that are vital to our society.

Every year, thousands of students come to Duke from around the world to learn, conduct research, and take part in campus life. In this uncertain moment, we are committed to providing our international students the opportunity to begin and complete their education at Duke -- because we believe that it aligns with our mission to train leaders for the global community, because we recognize the vitality that a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds brings to our campus, and because we seek to foster a welcoming community of learners that reflects the shared challenges and aspirations our increasingly connected world.

We will continue to support our international students through these challenging times, and will work with the higher education community to advocate for policies that open doors, not close them.

Coronavirus risk: Viral graphic shows danger of restaurants, groceries, parties and more - but is it true? - KABC-TV

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:47 PM PDT

A chart that shows the risk of different activities amid the coronavirus pandemic has gone viral - but exactly how accurate is it?

COVID-19 RISK CALCULATOR: Quiz yourself on the safest, most dangerous things you can do as California reopens

The graphic was made and released by the Texas Medical Association. It shows the relative risk of ordering takeout, doing your groceries, eating at a restaurant and pretty much everything else as we continue to live with the threat of COVID-19.

CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL SIZE IMAGE

But before you use this graphic as a roadmap for your life, you should ask yourself a few questions. Ok, maybe it's actually a lot of questions:

"When people are considering an activity or outing, they have to consider variables such as indoors versus outdoors, time spent around others, density of people, shared surfaces and the ability to physical distance," says Dr. Alok Patel, a contributor to KABC's sister station, KGO, for starters.

App users, for a better experience: Click here to view the story in a new window

For example, the Texas Medical Association chart lists going to the beach as a higher risk than going grocery shopping. However, walking along an empty beach in NorCal's Mendocino County by yourself poses next-to-no COVID-19 risk. Going to a crowded grocery store where no one is wearing masks (not allowed in California, by the way) would pose a relatively higher health risk.

KGO asked experts to help navigate the risk of 12 activities you may want to do in California. Check out our interactive story below to see what they had to say.

Then there's the question of any underlying medical conditions you might have, or if you have high-risk members of your household.

Plus, you should also think about the rate of transmission in your community. Going out to a restaurant Orange County isn't the same risk as going out to eat in NorCal's in Shasta County, for example.

The biggest asterisk on all of the activities in the chart? Masks. If people aren't wearing face coverings during any of those activities, the risk factor gets dialed way up.

"People need to keep in mind that businesses could follow every single safety precaution perfectly and that still may not be enough," says Patel. "The general public visiting those businesses need to be responsible, as well."

For those reasons, the Texas chart isn't totally off base, but it's a bit simplified. You may want to think of the chart as more a "litmus test," suggests Patel, as opposed to actionable health advice.

Undroppable to unused: Does Jorginho have a future at Chelsea? - Goal

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:08 PM PDT

Covid-19 has turned the entire football world upside down.

From major issues - such as the very existence of clubs and the loss of supporters from stadiums - to the minutiae of new tactical systems and fresh selection headaches; every individual within the game is having to reassess their own options.

For Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, life, at least on the pitch, could not be more different.

Before the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of football in March, the Blues' vice-captain was a regular under Frank Lampard. Only skipper Cesar Azpilicueta had played more minutes across all competitions than the Italy international.

Fast-forward four months, however, and Jorginho now finds himself very much on the fringes at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old is yet to make an appearance since top-flight football returned in England having been an unused substitute in each of Chelsea's last four league and cup matches.

It was telling that when N'Golo Kante went off injured in the 78th minute of Saturday's win over Watford that it was teenager Billy Gilmour, not Jorginho, who Lampard ushered from the bench to take the France international's place.

Kante has been deployed in Jorginho's favoured No.6 role since the restart, and with Gilmour the latest to emerge from the club's famed academy system, it is not unfair to suggest that Jorginho now finds himself, at the very best, third in the pecking order.

It is quite the fall from grace for the former Napoli star.

Having been seen as being indespensable by Maurizio Sarri during his first season in west London, it seemed that Lampard was happy to have Jorginho retain his place in the starting XI while inexperienced youngsters were given their chances elsewhere on the pitch.

Such was his happiness with life in the capital that the midfielder began intensive English lessons so as to be able to communicate better with his increasingly homegrown group of team-mates.

But now he finds himself very much in the shadows, and despite Kante and fellow midfielder Mateo Kovacic being ruled out of Tuesday's clash with Crystal Palace, it is not a given that Jorginho will step in and start at Selhurst Park.

Jorginho Chelsea 2019-20

"I don't want to go into the personal details. I just have to pick a team as I see best. They are just my choices," Lampard told reporters in his pre-match press conference when asked about Jorginho. It is the third such time that the metronomic passer has been brought up during recent meetings with the media.

"He has been very professional about it. He wants to play as every player does. One of the hardest parts of the job is telling a player who is not playing, or picking a squad and leaving out players.

"Jorginho always trains well. He has handled it professionally and that's what I would expect. It is important for players in a long season, with the competitive squad that we have, that they are there to support players when they are out, and he has done that. So we will see with my selection tomorrow."

Frank Lampard quote GFX

Goal has learned that Jorginho is unhappy with his current situation at Chelsea, though given the expected difficulties that the post-lockdown transfer market is going to face this summer, potentially leaving the club is not something that will be easy to pull off.

It is understood that Sarri is keen to reunite with the midfielder at Juventus - a fact that has not been lost on Lampard and continues to frustrate the Blues boss with the season still ongoing.

It had been suggested that Juve would offer Miralem Pjanic to Chelsea as part-exchange for Jorginho, but the Bosnia-Herzegovina international has since agreed to join Barcelona as part of the deal that will see Arthur Melo swap Camp Nou for the Allianz Stadium.

Regardless, Chelsea had no interest in signing Pjanic, and instead will want to recoup as much of the £57 million ($86m) they paid for Jorginho in July 2018 if they do look to move him on during the off-season.

Such a fee would prove difficult for Juventus to stomach given the impact of Covid-19 on their finances. With their interest only casual for the time being, it seems unlikely Jorginho will be Turin-bound unless the two clubs can get creative by including players in the deal or agreeing a loan deal with the obligation to buy at a later date.

Maurizio Sarri Jorginho Chelsea Europa League 2019

"His price-tag has certainly gone up over the last two years. He has done well in London and become a regular for Italy," Jorginho's agent, Joao Santos, told Italian football website Calciomercato in a recent interview. "He is now the vice-captain at Chelsea and has amassed a great deal of experience playing in the Champions League and Europa League.

"I think it's very unlikely an offer will come in for Jorginho because nobody can afford to make that kind of investment in the market right now.

"Because of the pandemic, nobody knows when we can return to normal or even play with fans in the stadium, so that's a big problem for the transfer market."

Juventus are yet to make any kind of contact with Chelsea regarding a transfer, and so, for now, it seems that Jorginho is destined to see out the season on the sidelines unless something alters dramatically in the coming weeks.

It is felt that his penalty-taking aside, he offers little to the team from an attacking point of view, with even Kante able to drive forward from his new role at the base of Lampard's midfield three.

Kovacic, Mason Mount and Ross Barkley have all enjoyed stellar campaigns, and as such the need to move Kante back into his previous position as a No.8 has been minimised. That all-but ensures that he will not vacate Jorginho's favoured spot on the pitch when he returns to fitness.

Nineteen-year-old Gilmour is clearly considered ready to deputise regardless, meaning that Chelsea will not feel forced to let Jorginho - whose contract runs until 2023 - move on the cheap given they do not need money to sign a replacement.

And so while Juventus would seem like a perfect landing spot, Jorginho faces a summer of considering his options. Right now there seems little need for him at Stamford Bridge.

Second Front Systems Raises $6 Million to Provide Immediate Impact to National Security, led by ARTIS Ventures - GlobeNewswire

San Francisco, CA, July 07, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Second Front Systems, a software company working to disrupt the traditional aerospace and defense industry by acting as a beachhead for cutting-edge startups, today announced an oversubscribed $6 million in seed funding led by ARTIS Ventures. Additional investors include Kleiner Perkins, 8VC, Gula Tech Adventures, and Abstract VenturesThe venture funding will be used to expand the capabilities of Second Front's software platform, Atlas Fulcrum, which has recently received a major contract award from the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Air Force's AFWERX. The U.S. military recognizes that commercially driven tech, such as autonomy, cyber, biotech, and AI, has surpassed the defense base in relevance to national security in the 21st century. Acting as a "digital prime," the Atlas Fulcrum platform empowers the U.S. government to regain control from the traditional defense industry in scouting, vetting, and securely fielding cutting-edge technology at scale.Austin Walne, partner at ARTIS Ventures will join Second Front's board with General Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Stanley McChrystal, former commander of U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan, and Alberto Yepez, co-founder and managing director of ForgePoint Capital.
"The U.S. Military is actively seeking advances in artificial intelligence and synthetic biology. This aligns with ARTIS Ventures' focus on the convergence of computer science and life science," said Austin Walne, partner at ARTIS Ventures, whose firm is also an investor in Palantir. "Second Front's executive team comes with proven military backgrounds, giving them an insider's perspective on vetting and integrating technologies that will have an immediate impact on national security."
Second Front was started by former Marine Corps Major Peter Dixon, a scout sniper platoon commander who worked with In-Q-Tel and DARPA to pioneer counter-cartel and counter-insurgency technologies, including early adoption of Palantir, at the State Department and Pentagon, and retired Marine Corps Colonel Mark Butler, a fighter and test pilot who helped form the Marines' arm of Cyber Command.
"I came back from combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan where my men and I were hamstrung by outdated technology that negated what should have been an advantage against insurgent adversaries," said Second Front CEO Peter Dixon. "Subsequently, at the Pentagon, I watched as billions of dollars were awarded to traditional defense companies, many of whom were unable to deliver usable technology to front-line troops. This venture financing and initial partnerships gives Second Front the velocity to build a new type of 'lean systems integrator' that can harness the innovations of the American entrepreneurial ecosystem where the traditional defense firms have failed." Biotech and the Military
As the U.S. military looks to reshape the national security and innovation base to respond to pandemics and embrace evolving technologies such as synthetic biology, biotech has become a crucial focus area for the government.
As stated by Dr. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics in Breaking Defense, "There are so many breakthroughs that are happening. We don't typically think about biology as a core competency in the Air Force, but biology teaches us a ton."
Second Front Systems is a public benefit corporation operating in a new class of venture-backed defense companies that includes Palantir, Anduril, and Rebellion Defense.
