Albany, N.Y. — New York City will begin phase four of the state’s reopening plan on Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today.
The phase includes things like zoos, malls, museums and more. Cuomo previously said that no new indoor activity will be allowed in the city as part of the phase, so businesses like malls will remain closed there for now.
New York City is the last region of the state not yet in phase four.
Several regions, including Central New York, entered the phase in June. Others followed.
“Every region made it through four phases without having to close and the numbers are consistent through all phases of reopening,” Cuomo said during a conference call with reporters.
Nonessential businesses in the state first closed in March to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. New York began reopening in May and businesses have been allowed to return in phases, as long as they follow certain guidelines.
Cuomo announced a series of new rules for bars and restaurants in the state on Thursday, in part because some businesses haven’t been following reopening requirements, he said.
Some other businesses, including gyms and movie theaters, remain closed throughout New York. Cuomo has given no indication when they’ll be allowed to return.
He has said repeatedly in recent weeks he’s concerned about the potential for the virus to spread indoors, especially in air conditioned spaces. Malls were not originally allowed in phase four, but added later as long as their air conditioning systems met certain standards.
Cuomo has also said he’s concerned increases in the virus in other states could eventually lead to a resurgence in New York if travelers bring it here.
