Slippery goal the difference as Ashland earns much-needed win over Ontario - Mansfield News Journal Posted: 10 Sep 2020 11:42 PM PDT ONTARIO - Ashland head boys soccer coach Dustin Hosler admits his team usually has two weaknesses - shooting from the 18 and following shots. On Thursday night in a 2-1 win over Ontario, those weaknesses were the Arrows' strength. The Arrows and Warriors battled to a scoreless half as both teams took their time feeling out one another to see what kind of attack would work best to pull out a win. the Arrows put up six shots in the first half with two on goal while Ontario had five with two in frame. But the Arrows got on the board first thanks to a shot off the right foot of Carson Lavengood from nearly 25 yards away as he tucked it into the top left corner of the goal for one of the most perfectly placed shots of the year. The goal came at the 25:16 mark of the second half. The shot outside of the 18 marker broke the scoreless tie and flipped the script on one of the Arrows' self-proclaimed weaknesses. The goal was due in part to a lot of patience from the Arrows. "The first half was that way," Hosler said. "We possessed and moved the ball extremely well, it was just that final pass was where we struggled. We have been working on shooting from the 18 and Lavengood hit an incredible shot for us. We also talked about following shots with this slick ground and Avery (Hixon) did exactly that." The second weakness the Arrows proved to be a strength on Thursday as Hixon's goal. Off of a free-kick from Andrew Mills that was sent directly at the Ontario keeper, a slick ball thanks to a hazy, foggy evening at Ontario High School slipped through the hands and legs of the keeper and Hixon sprung into action following the shot and knocking in the second goal of the night on the rebound at the 16:42 mark of the second half. "My coaches called out right before he took that shot and told me to follow the shot," Hixon said. "I told them 'I got you' and I executed. It comes down to the right place at the right time." The Arrows owned the commanding 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to play, but the Warriors aren't typically a team that lays down and dies. Ontario head coach Chris McClenathan told his team that a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous lead in soccer. It fired the Warriors up as they got on the board when Bryden Wolfe sent home a corner kick with a strong header to cut Ashland's lead to 2-1 with 14:07 left. It was exactly the response McClenathan had in mind. "You could tell it fired them up and they responded to the pressure," McClenathan said. "It made them believe they could come back out and win this one and that was good to see that they kept that fight." The Arrows held on and picked up the much-needed win especially after suffering two consecutive losses after picking up what looked like a season-defining win over Lexington on Sept. 1. The Arrows followed that up with a loss to Sylvania Southview and a tough Ohio Cardinal Conference loss to Wooster, 1-0. "We came off a big win against Lex and I think there was a little bit of a hangover to that," Hosler said. "We got a big win and then went up to Sylvania and honestly, our effort wasn't there. We did not play our game. We battled against Wooster in a 1-0 game, but the team fought and that was what we really wanted to see. We just struggle to score." But the big win on Thursday is a momentum boost for the rest of the season as the Arrows haven't beat Ontario since the two teams started meeting regularly back in 2016. "This is really big," Hixon said. "I feel like this game proved we have a chance to tie for the OCC because Ontario is a quality opponent. This was crucial especially with us having a tough time scoring goals so it was great to put two on the board today." Hosler agreed. "Ontario is so well-coached and disciplined," Hosler said. "They were up for it and this is a quality win that will set us up for the second part of the season. We have two big conference games coming up with West Holmes and Mansfield Senior and we need wins to stay on track. We have an outside shot and need Lex to go up and beat Wooster and we need to win out. This one is just giving us the momentum to do that and to give our seniors a nice send-off on Tuesday night." While losing is never the object for any team, the Warriors and McClenathan left the pitch feeling better than they would have if it was a sloppy loss. "Ashland is a historic program with Final 4s so to lose 2-1 fighting to the end against a program like that is something we can accept," McClenathan said. "You could tell these guys put in the work during the offseason and got stronger in the weight room. The positives of all four games is our physicality and playing strong. Also to fight down 2-0 and continue to push, it is all encouraging." Ontario fell to 2-2 on the year and has a tough road game on Saturday at Granville. The Arrows improved to 3-3-1 on the year and hosts West Holmes on Tuesday. "I feel like with this win, it is one that we will keep the momentum because of it," Hixon said. "When we beat Lex, we felt like the kings of the world because we hadn't beat them in eight years. We relaxed after it. This helped us realize we can't do that after big wins." jfurr@gannett.com 740-244-9934 Twitter: @JakeFurr11 "Goal" - Google News September 10, 2020 at 08:00PM https://ift.tt/35pVVyt Slippery goal the difference as Ashland earns much-needed win over Ontario - Mansfield News Journal "Goal" - Google News https://ift.tt/35TEe8t Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |

McGuire's Late Goals Push Duke Past WFU, 4-3, in Overtime - Duke University - GoDuke.com Posted: 10 Sep 2020 08:42 PM PDT WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the first contest for Duke Athletics since March, the Blue Devil women's soccer team traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., and secured a thrilling overtime victory over Wake Forest, 4-3, as junior Marykate McGuire collected two late goals. McGuire scored two goals over the final 8:05 of the match and secured her second multi-goal contest of her career and third game-winner, while sophomore Sophie Jones assisted on both of the final two tallies. "It was very exciting, thrilling," said McGuire. "Playing against Wake Forest is always a battle and always a tight game. Tonight, just coming out and the atmosphere and being able to play after so long, like six or seven months. It was really, really rewarding to come out to play with the people I love and play the game we love. I am so happy we got the win tonight." The contest between two ACC teams was considered a non-conference match-up both schools will meet in 10 days for an ACC game in Durham, N.C., Sunday, Sept. 20. "What character we showed scoring two goals with about two minutes and 15 seconds left before the game ended and scoring fairly early in overtime to," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "We did a lot of really good things. We got caught a couple times on a counter and we made some mistakes for the first game. Congratulations to Wake Forest. I thought Tony had his team really prepared and they played really well. I thought they caught us, punished us when we were in a big shape that we got ourselves in. We will fix that. We have a lot of work to do before next week. Our goal was to come here and leave here 1-0 and we are that. I am really, really happy." After both teams went without a shot for the first six minutes, the Blue Devils (1-0) were able to strike first. Senior defender Taylor Mitchell sent a great feed down the field to senior Karlie Paschall, who was able to get a cross in front of the box, before a Demon Deacon defender kicked the ball out of bounds for a Duke corner kick. Paschall, a native of Brentwood, Tenn., placed a perfect feed to the head of senior defender Caitlin Cosme, who finished it perfect into the back, left corner to give Duke a 1-0 lead at the 6:35 mark. Cosme, a product of New Hyde Park, N.Y., collected her second collegiate goal. Wake Forest (0-1) came back to attempt the next two shots but were not dangerous. Making her 43rd career start in goal, redshirt senior Brooke Heinsohn grabbed a save on the first attempt. The Blue Devils kept putting pressure on the Demon Deacons and junior Mackenzie Pluck found a streaking McGuire for a shot but was saved by Madison Howard at the 28:32 mark. After a near hand ball in the box, Pluck tried to chip a shot over the keeper's head but just went high over the crossbar less than two minutes. Wake Forest evened the score at the 37:11 mark as Ryanne Brown slipped in-between the Duke defense and found herself with a one-v-one opportunity. She finished the attempt into the bottom left corner to make the score, 1-1, off an assist from Sofia Rossi. Less than two minutes into the match Emmy Duerr fired an attempt that went wide right following the Demon Deacon goal. At the end of the first half, Duke held a 4-3 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks, but the score remained 1-1. For the second straight half, the Blue Devils came out with a quick goal to start the second period as Pluck was able to take the ball away from a Wake Forest player and drove down the left side of the pitch. She found McGuire on the left side of the box, before sending a beautiful cross to senior Tess Boade, who one-touched her ninth career tally into the right corner past the WFU keeper. Boade, who is from Highlands Ranch, Colo., has now scored at least one goal in each of her four seasons and five over the last two years to give Duke a 2-1 lead at the 46:20 mark. After Duke fired seven shots at the Demon Deacon goal without getting anything past the line, Wake Forest tallied two goals over a span of one minute to take 3-2 lead with just under 30 minutes remaining. The Blue Devils started having several student-athletes cramp up and had to leave the match, but Duke kept attacking. Duke's best attempt came at the 75:48 mark off a free kick just outside the box as Cosme hit the left post on a 20-yard strike and rolled down the end line, before going out of bounds on Duke. A second yellow card for Wake Forest in a span of four minutes gave Duke another free kick just outside the box with 9:41 remaining. Boade launched a shot that went high over the box. With 2:16 left in regulation, Duke was able to equalize the match as senior Mia Gyau sent a short cross to sophomore Sophie Jones at the top of the box. A native of Menlo Park, Calif., Jones found a streaking McGuire who used her left foot to finish her 13th career goal into the bottom right corner to move the score to 3-3. After not having a full contest since March, the two teams went to overtime for the ninth time in series history. Then Duke registered the game-winner at the 95:08 mark as Mitchell drive up to the midfield mark and passed to Jones, who then sent a long feed to McGuire. A Portsmouth, R.I., product, McGuire showcased some impressive footwork doing a 360 degree turn and finished once again with her left foot near the right post to give the Blue Devils the win. Duke outshot Wake Forest, 23-6, for the match. The seven goals combined were the most in the Duke/Wake Forest series history and the two squads have scored a total of 17 goals over the last three matches. Duke will next host Virginia in the 2020 home opener at Koskinen Stadium Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. #GoDuke "Goal" - Google News September 10, 2020 at 07:35PM https://ift.tt/3miWf8r McGuire's Late Goals Push Duke Past WFU, 4-3, in Overtime - Duke University - GoDuke.com "Goal" - Google News https://ift.tt/35TEe8t Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |

Trump's need to gossip about nukes provokes anxiety - CNN Posted: 10 Sep 2020 08:08 PM PDT Boasting of his "great intel," Trump once told Russian officials visiting the Oval Office in 2017 about an ISIS plot so classified the disclosure risked exposing the source. In a telephone call with the President of the Philippines, also in 2017, Trump revealed the US had positioned submarines near North Korea, information previously so closely held that even some inside the White House were caught by surprise. And in newly revealed conversation with legendary journalist Bob Woodward, Trump disclosed a nuclear weapons system he claimed "you haven't even seen or heard about." "I have built a nuclear — a weapons system that nobody's ever had in this country before," Trump said, according to a recording of their December 5, 2019, conversation, before going on to say: "We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before. There's nobody. What we have is incredible." In the ranks of information Trump has revealed that has provoked anxiety throughout the national security apparatus, it wasn't necessarily the most shocking revelation. While some Democrats said the disclosure could harm national security, inside the administration few appeared worried by what amounted to another boast from a President known for divulging state secrets. Woodward writes he later confirmed with several anonymous US officials that a new weapons system had been developed and they were "surprised" that Trump revealed it. But the remark was revealing nonetheless because it demonstrated Trump's penchant for using sometimes secret government information to impress his interlocutors and convey his stature. Woodward, one of the famous newspaper journalists in America, spoke with Trump 18 times for the book in conversations Trump's most senior aides were often unaware of. The President, convinced he could generate a positive portrayal, gave Woodward his personal cell phone number and often called him at night from the White House residence. Trump seemed to believe that the more access he offered Woodward, the better the book would make him look. Yet many of his conversations also seemed designed to impress the veteran journalist with his insider knowledge and access to top-secret information — including detailing his encounters with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Asked about the nuclear weapons system after excerpts of the book emerged on Wednesday, administration officials said they weren't sure specifically what Trump was referring to but did not express great concern that his disclosure would jeopardize American security. 'Super duper' missile dramaIn May, Trump boasted the US military was developing a new "super duper" missile that he claimed could travel 17 times faster than anything in the current arsenal. The disclosure set off a small drama at the Pentagon, where officials refused to provide any details of the weapon Trump himself unveiled. Hours after Trump spoke, a Pentagon spokesman tweeted the Defense Department "is working on developing a range of hypersonic missiles to counter our adversaries." Another spokesman said, "we will not discuss capabilities of any systems we may or may not have under development." In March, the Pentagon said it successfully tested "a hypersonic glide body," a key component of a hypersonic missile in a flight experiment in March, saying that weapons provide "an ability to strike targets hundreds and even thousands of miles away, in a matter of minutes." The Trump administration also began discussing a nuclear weapons system in 2018 that amounts to a low-yield variant of more traditional nuclear warheads. Trump has previously boasted about modernizing the US nuclear arsenal and included a major increase in funding for that effort in his latest budget proposal. The President, Vice President and some agency heads designated by the President have broad authority over classifying or declassifying information. But Trump's revelations of secret information run the risk of further damaging his already fraught relationship with US intelligence agencies. He has openly questioned the competency of intelligence officials, challenging their high-confidence assessment that Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election. Disclosures of this kind also risk harming Trump's credibility with partners around the world who share sensitive information with the US on the understanding that it remains confidential. Tweeting secretsIt's not always in private that Trump reveals sensitive or classified information. His Twitter feed has also been a source of significant disclosures. In early August 2019, Trump confirmed reportsthat an advanced nuclear-powered cruise missile had exploded during testing in Russia and said the US was "learning much" from the incident, information which one senior administration official described as "not classified anymore," acknowledging that it had been classified information until the President tweeted that "We have similar, though more advanced, technology. The Russian "Skyfall" explosion has people worried about the air around the facility, and far beyond. Not good!" US officials said that at the time that the country hadn't been developing a nuclear-powered system. Also, in August last year, Trump claimed the US had nothing to do with the explosion of an Iranian rocket, tweeting a photo at such high resolution that it prompted questions about whether the President had publicly released classified imagery. "The United States of America was not involved in the catastrophic accident during final launch preparations for the Safir SLV Launch at Semnan Launch Site One in Iran," Trump wrote, and added what appeared to be a sarcastic sign off. "I wish Iran best wishes and good luck in determining what happened at Site One." Oval Office breachOne of the highest profile intel breaches came in an exchange with Russian officials in the Oval Office in 2017. The visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and then-Ambassador to Washington Sergey Kislyak had already sparked an uproar and violated basic White House protocol and guidance from the President's top advisers. It was later revealed Trump divulged classified information to the Russian officials that had been relayed to the US by the Israeli government. Trump at the time defended his right to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russia, saying in a pair of tweets he has "an absolute right" as President to do so. A US official said Trump boasted about his access to classified intelligence in the meeting. An excerpt of an official transcript of the meeting later revealed that Trump boasted to them, "I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day," he said. The President has also been known to speak to several world leaders on his personal cell phone, an unusual approach that breaks diplomatic protocol and is raising concerns about the security and secrecy of the US commander in chief's communications. Trump has handed out his number to the leaders of Canada, France and Mexico, according to administration officials, and has spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his cell. Another senior administration official said that Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan "speak constantly," often outside standard White House protocol. Asked whether Trump may speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin or other world leaders on his cell, one former top White House official said "we never knew who he was speaking to once he was up in the residence." "This was our biggest concern," this official added. "Not only were calls being made on unsecure lines, the President's filter was faulty, and so there was no telling what he'd say, and to whom." This person said the President's top intelligence and national security advisers never seriously considered withholding sensitive information from the President out of fear that he'd divulge it: "There are people who probably joke about it, but at the end of the day, he's the President and he's the one calling the shots." 'The President can declassify anything.'On Capitol Hill, Democrats said the disclosure of the weapons program was among the most significant in Woodward's book. "There is so much coverage that is focused on the character side. What matters is how it impacts our security or leads him to make really bad policy choices," said Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware. But Republicans largely downplayed Trump's disclosure, arguing either they had not seen the comments or nothing the President revealed had endangered national security. One member, acting Intelligence Committee Chairman Marco Rubio, said he wasn't sure a disclosure of that nature showed "good judgment," although he did say Trump technically was allowed to disclose any program he wanted. Rubio told reporters that "the President can declassify anything." For many members in the GOP, the President's extensive interviews with Woodward and sustained fallout from them follow a familiar pattern. The President abandons traditional Republican orthodoxy, throws out the script, and yet GOP voters and the members who are elected by them avoid criticizing the President for fear that it will do little more than earn a rebuke from a President the Republican base isn't abandoning anytime soon. One Republican senator, speaking anonymously about the President's disclosure, said Trump likes to "talk about our weapons systems in ways that most presidents wouldn't, but even with that, I don't think he has ever said anything that our adversaries wouldn't have already known." "For him to say 'we've got these things', I wouldn't say that, I wouldn't want a member of the intel committee to say it, but I don't think from an intel perspective, he is saying anything our adversaries wouldn't know," the senator said. Asked why the President did it, the member said "I am not capable of analyzing why the President does what he does. エンタメのDX(Impress Watch) - Yahoo! エンタメのDX(Impress Watch) - Yahoo!ニュース "エンターテインメント" - Google ニュース https://ift.tt/2W81riD Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Posted: 10 Sep 2020 06:08 PM PDT India and China exchange first gunfire over disputed border in 45 years as tensions between nuclear-armed neighbours ramp up - breaking the treaty that bans the use of firearms
Tensions along the disputed India-China border seem to be getting worse, three months after their deadliest confrontation in decades. The Asian giants accused each other this week of sending soldiers into the other's territory and fired warning shots for the first time in 45 years, raising the specter of full-scale military conflict. Their foreign ministers are expected to discuss the simmering dispute in Moscow on Thursday on the sidelines of a regional security and economic meeting. Indian army vehicles move along a highway leading to Ladakh on Wednesday as tensions rise on the border with China The high-altitude standoff along the eastern section of what's known as the Line of Actual Control - a loose demarcation - risks dramatically altering the already fraught relationship between the nuclear-armed neighbors. The face-off began in early May with a fierce brawl before exploding into hand-to-hand combat with clubs, stones and fists on June 15 that left 20 Indian soldiers dead. China is believed to have taken casualties, but has given no numbers. India and China inherited their territorial disputes from the period of British colonial rule. Three years after India's independence in 1947 and a year after the communists came to power in China, the new government in Beijing began strongly asserting its claims and repudiating earlier treaties it says were signed under duress, but which India says are fixed. Beijing's approach has strengthened under Xi Jinping, China's most powerful leader in decades who has sworn not to surrender even an inch of territory. An Indian security personnel stands guard after shots were fired for the first time in 45 years this week At least 20 Indian soldiers, including a colonel, were killed in June during a mass brawl at the border In the 1950s, China started building a strategic road on the uninhabited Aksai Chin Plateau to connect its restive regions of Tibet and Xinjiang. India objected and claimed Aksai Chin as part of Ladakh, itself belonging to the former principality of Kashmir now divided between India and Pakistan. Relations were further strained after India allowed Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to establish a self-declared government-in-exile in the northern Indian town of Dharmsala after he fled his homeland in 1959 during an abortive uprising against Chinese rule. The differences led to a bitter monthlong war in 1962. Firefights broke out again in 1967 and 1975, leading to more deaths on both sides. They've since adopted protocols, including an agreement not to use firearms, but those protocols have fractured in this year's clashes. China, in the meantime, began cementing its relations with India's archrival Pakistan and backing it on the issue of Kashmir. The high-altitude standoff along the eastern section of what's known as the Line of Actual Control - a loose demarcation - risks dramatically altering the already fraught relationship The fiercely contested LAC separates Chinese and Indian held territories from Ladakh in the west to India's eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims in its entirety. It is broken in parts where the Himalayan nations of Nepal and Bhutan border China. According to India, the de facto border is 3,488 kilometers (2,167-mile) long, although China promotes a considerably shorter figure. As its name suggests, it divides the areas of physical control rather than territorial claims. In all, China claims some 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) of territory in India's northeast, including Arunachal Pradesh with its mainly Buddhist population. India says China occupies 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of its territory in the Aksai Chin Plateau, which India considers part of Ladakh, where the current face-off is happening. Despite more than three dozen rounds of talks over the years, and multiple meetings between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, they are nowhere near settling their dispute. Since the 1962 war, both economies have grown substantially, but China has far outpaced India while enjoying a large trade surplus with its neighbor. The fiercely contested LAC separates Chinese and Indian held territories from Ladakh in the west to India's eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims in its entirety The growing economic rivalry has added to territorial and geostrategic differences. India has tried to capitalize on China's rising labor costs, and deteriorating ties with the United States and Europe, to become a new base for foreign manufacturers. India grew concerned after China recently built a road through Pakistani-controlled Kashmir as part of Xi's signature foreign policy push, the multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative, which India has vehemently opposed. Meanwhile, India's growing strategic alliance with the U.S. has ruffled feathers in Beijing, which sees the relationship as a counterweight against China's rise. Indian fears of Chinese territorial expansion are bolstered by the growing presence of the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean and Beijing's efforts to strengthen ties with not only Pakistan but also Sri Lanka and Nepal. Armed with spears: Chinese troops near the disputed Himalayan border with India this week where gunfire is banned but soldiers fought in deadly hand-to-hand combat in June India is jockeying for strategic parity with China, massively ramping up its military infrastructure along the LAC. Adding to the tension, India unilaterally declared Ladakh a federal territory and separated it from disputed Kashmir in August 2019, ending its semi-autonomous status. Shortly after, lawmakers in India's ruling party began advocating taking control of some China-run areas, alarming Beijing. Border tensions have persisted despite talks at military, diplomatic and political levels. With strong nationalists leading both countries, the border has taken on a prominence not seen in years. An Indian Air Force's (IAF) C-17 Globemaster transport plane flies over a mountain range in Leh in the Ladakh region, September 8. Both India and China claim shots were fired along the disputed border below, in a further escalation of military tension between the nuclear-armed nations Having emerged relatively unscathed from the COVID-19 pandemic, China is also perceived regionally as ramping up military ambitions against its neighbors, particularly through the use of 'salami slicing' tactics to incrementally gain territory. While Chinese soldiers remain in what India says is its territory in Ladakh, India occupied at least one unmanned mountain top last week, leading Beijing to furiously demand that New Delhi vacate the area. Experts warn that if military hostilities are not stopped, war could be next. 'If diplomacy fails, guns talk. That is the natural culmination of what we have been witnessing during last four months,' said Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda, who was head of the Indian military's Northern Command from 2014 to 2016. 'Things are fast escalating out of control unless there is a breakthrough in talks.' Wang Lian of Peking University's international relations department considers the possibility of a wider conflict less likely, despite preparations being made on both sides. 'China has shown restraint in bilateral relations with India, and India may restrain itself from overdoing it in the future,' Wang said. 'I didn't lie': A subdued but defensive Trump denies he misled despite tape - CNN Posted: 10 Sep 2020 06:08 PM PDT Confronting another political crisis caused by his own words and actions, Trump sought to both assign blame elsewhere for the deadly pandemic and share responsibility for the revelation he made in February that the virus was deadly and transmitted through the air. He was speaking from the White House briefing room, where he'd assembled reporters ahead of an evening campaign rally in Michigan. Trump, who does not draw a distinction between his official and political events, used the podium as a preview of sorts for his event later in the day, attacking rival Joe Biden in a lengthy and discursive opening statement. He took a few questions afterward, noting who he thought were the high-caliber reporters in the room, before disappearing quickly back into the West Wing. The President rejected a question about why he lied when he said in public the coronavirus was milder than the flu even though he was telling journalist Bob Woodward in private conversations it was worse. And he pondered why Woodward -- who is not the president -- wouldn't have disclosed earlier what he said. "Such a terrible question and phraseology," Trump responded when asked why he lied to the American people about the seriousness of Covid-19. "I didn't lie. What I said is we have to be calm, we can't be panicked." His response will do little to quell the uproar over Woodward's book, "Rage," which has already been used on the campaign trail to attack Trump as having mismanaged the pandemic. Trump had been hoping to turn attention away from coronavirus and toward issues such as public safety and the economy. But the continuing presence of the pandemic appears unlikely to shift between now and Election Day. After excerpts of Woodward's book emerged on Wednesday, White House aides began pointing fingers at those they believed responsible for signing off on the 18 interviews the President participated in. Trump made clear, however, that it was his choice to speak extensively with the journalist most famous for exposing Nixon's Watergate scandal. "Bob Woodward is somebody that I respect just from hearing the name for many, many years, not knowing too much about his work, not caring about his work, but I thought it would be interesting to talk to him for a period of calls. So we did that," Trump said. He questioned why Woodward would not have released his quotes about coronavirus earlier if he believed them to be newsworthy -- suggesting they were both responsible for concealing the information, though Woodward has said he wasn't sure of the veracity of Trump's comments at the time. "Certainly if he thought that was a bad statement, he would have reported it, because he thinks that you know, you don't want to have anybody that is going to suffer medically because of some fact," Trump said. "And he didn't report it because he didn't think it was bad, nobody thought it was bad." And he claimed his goal through it all was to convey calm, though Trump has previously stoked fear on other topics, including on Thursday morning when he tweeted "America's Suburbs will be OVERRUN with Low Income Projects, Anarchists, Agitators, Looters" if he doesn't win the election. Trump, who expressed chagrin at the questions he was asked and left after 12 minutes of back-and-forth, once believed that speaking to Woodward might generate a positive portrayal of his presidency. Many of their conversations occurred without the knowledge of White House officials, sometimes at night when Trump was in his residence. On Wednesday evening, however, Trump was occupied with coverage of the book. He listed the entire prime-time lineup of Fox News during his news conference, saying he'd watched every program the night before. And he said he woke up this morning to catch "Fox and Friends." A celebrated and award-winning performer on stage and screen, Rigg was known for her TV roles in The Avengers and Game Of Thrones, and in film as Tracy Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Her theater work included a 1992 production of Greek tragedy Medea, for which she won a Tony in the title role, and a 1987 staging of Stephen Sondheim's musical Follies. "Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning. She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time. Diana was a much loved and admired member of her profession, a force of nature who loved her work and her fellow actors. She will be greatly missed," her agent Simon Beresford said. "My Beloved Ma died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family. She died of cancer diagnosed in March, and spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession. I will miss her beyond words," added Rigg's daughter Rachael Stirling. Born in Doncaster in 1938, Rigg grew up for a brief period in India before returning to the UK to attend boarding school. She enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1955, where her classmates included Glenda Jackson. After a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company, she achieved stage fame with her role in the Ronald Millar play Abelard and Heloïse, for which she earned the first of three Tony nominations. Her TV break came in the 1960s spy series The Avengers, in which she played secret agent Emma Peel for 51 episodes, becoming something of a style icon and sex symbol in England. Staying in the genre, in 1969 she was cast in the sixth Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service, starring opposite George Lazenby, his one and only appearance in the franchise. Rigg's character, Tracy Bond, is still to this day the only one to have wed the Brit secret agent, though she meets a tragic fate in the film. More recently, she portrayed Olenna Tyrell in Game Of Thrones ("Tell Cersei, I want her to know it was me"), and appeared in ITV's Victoria and Channel 5's All Creatures Great And Small, which began airing this month. Her films roles also included 2006 romantic drama The Painted Veil and Andy Serkis' 2017 romance Breathe. Rigg also played a role in Edgar Wright's upcoming feature Last Night In Soho, which is scheduled for release on April 23, 2021. Posting on Twitter, Wright said it was "beyond a thrill to work with her on her final film". Rigg was a regular recipient of award nominations for her work both on stage and on screen. In 1994 she won the Best Actress in a Play Tony for Medea, while she was Golden Globe nominated for The Hospital in 1972, won an Emmy for Rebecca in 1997, a BAFTA TV award in 1990, and received several Olivier nominations. She was married twice, to the Israeli painter Menachem Gueffen from 1973-1976, and to theater producer Archibald Stirling 1982-1990. With the latter she had a daughter, Rachael Stirling, the two-time Olivier Award nominated actress. Asia summits under way amid US-China friction - Thomson Reuters Foundation Posted: 10 Sep 2020 05:08 PM PDT * 27 countries to join ASEAN Regional Forum * China says U.S. intervening, driving militarisation * Military activities on rise in S China Sea * Indonesia minister: ASEAN won't take sides * Vietnam PM: 'growing volatilities' in region (Add U.S. statement on Pompeo participation in meeting) By James Pearson and Khanh Vu HANOI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Southeast Asian foreign ministers kicked off a series of regional summits on Wednesday expected to seek collaboration to fight global threats and to try to de-escalate a tit-for-tat U.S.-China rivalry as the world's two biggest economies vie for influence. Russia, Japan, Australia, South Korea and India were among other countries remotely joining an event hosted by Vietnam that will include a 27-nation security forum, as concern grows about rhetoric and accidental conflict, and about other countries being caught up in the fray. "The regional geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape, including the South China Sea, are witnessing growing volatilities that are detrimental to peace and stability," Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said in opening the summit. Vietnam's foreign minister, Pham Binh Minh, said the role of international law and multilateral institutions was being "greatly challenged". The U.S. State Department said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo joined several countries from the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and "many other partners" in raising concerns about China's "aggressive actions" in the South China Sea. Pompeo and several countries voiced concern about China's imposition of a new national security law on Hong Kong, the arrests of pro-democracy students, postponement of the territory's elections and disqualification of pro-democracy electoral candidates, department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said. Pompeo and other ministers also called for a cessation of violence and a negotiated solution to escalating violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State and for North Korea to abandon its weapons of mass destruction, she said. China's top diplomat, State Councillor Wang Yi, accused the United States of intervening directly in disputes among claimants in the South China Sea and of being the biggest driver of its militarisation. "Peace and stability is China's greatest strategic interest in the South China Sea," he told the meeting, according to China's foreign ministry's website. Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in an interview with Reuters cautioned the United States and China against entangling Southeast Asian nations in their geopolitical battle. "We don't want to get trapped by this rivalry," she said on Tuesday, describing militarisation of the waterway as "worrying". U.S.-CHINA TENSIONS President Donald Trump has trumpeted his tough approach to China in the run-up to his November re-election bid and his administration has spoken out strongly against Beijing over issues from ranging from trade to espionage and China's maritime conduct. Washington has accused Beijing of bullying its neighbours by sending ships close to their offshore energy operations, and of opportunism in holding military exercises and testing new defence hardware in disputed locations, while rival claimants battle coronavirus outbreaks. China says its actions were lawful. Since mid-August, the United States has repeatedly riled China by sending warships to the South China Sea and the sensitive Taiwan Strait and flew a reconnaissance plane over Chinese live-fire drills. It blacklisted 24 Chinese entities over their involvement in building and militarising artificial islands. "There's no desire to take sides - or to be seen to be doing so," said Collin Koh, a security expert at Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. ASEAN would instead discuss with China the advancement of a code of maritime conduct and access to a COVID-19 vaccine, and talk to the United States about increasing investment from corporate America. ASEAN would try to "de-focus on the intensifying rivalry", he said. Ortagus said Pompeo praised ASEAN unity and transparency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and underscored the U.S. commitment to partnering with ASEAN countries in economic recovery efforts. 2020-09-10 16:36:57Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiK2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm9yaWNvbi5jby5qcC9uZXdzLzIxNzE2OTkvZnVsbC_SASpodHRwczovL3d3dy5vcmljb24uY28uanAvbmV3cy8yMTcxNjk5L2FtcC8?oc=5 |
