Actress Naya Rivera yelled 'help' before drowning, her son told investigators - CNN Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:48 PM PDT The "Glee" actress and her son rented a pontoon boat in July at Lake Piru. The two decided to jump into the water for a swim, according to an investigative report from Ventura County. Shortly after, Rivera told her son to get back on the boat, the report said. "She helped him onto the boat and he then heard (his mother) yell 'help' and she put her arm in the air," the report said. "She then disappeared into the water." Rivera's cause of death was drowning and her manner of death was an accident, according to an autopsy report from the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. The autopsy and investigative report said Rivera did not have a history of "suicidal ideation or attempt" and had recently been taking medication for a sinus infection. The reports also say she had vertigo that got worse when she was in the water but was considered to be a good swimmer. She did not have any Covid-19 symptoms. Initially, Rivera was offered a life jacket, but declined, the investigative report said. The rental employee told investigators he provided her a jacket anyway. Hours after Rivera drowned, the employee went to check on the pontoon boat because it was past due for return. The employee found the 4-year-old asleep on the boat wrapped in a towel and wearing a life vest. Rivera's disappearance led to a six-day search, which ended with the discovery of her body in the northeast area of the lake where the water is between 35 and 60 feet deep. The 33-year-old actress is best known for her role as Santana Lopez on the Fox show "Glee," which quickly won critical acclaim after debuting in 2009. She appeared in nearly every episode of the beloved musical-comedy-drama, which ended in 2015. Rivera's fellow "Glee" cast members Cory Monteith and Mark Salling have also died. Rivera was also on the CBS sitcom "The Royal Family" and in the comedy film "The Master of Disguise." More recently, she starred in the "Step Up" television series, based on the movie franchise. Jakarta heads into lockdown - Bendigo Advertiser Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:08 PM PDT Doctors in Indonesia's capital have warned the coronavirus pandemic is "not under control" with Jakarta intensive care units nearing full capacity and the city ordering new lockdown measures to stem a spike in infections. Jakarta has recorded more than 1000 new coronavirus cases on average each day this month, with the rising caseload placing considerable strain on hospitals in the world's fourth most populous nation. The occupancy rate of isolation rooms at 67 coronavirus referral hospitals is currently at 77 per cent, while the ICU occupancy is 83 per cent, according to the Jakarta administration. "It is like we have been running a marathon since March, we are exhausted," said Erlina Burhan, a pulmonologist from Persahabatan Hospital, "This is not to be underestimated. The situation is not under control." The number of patients being treated for suspected cases of COVID-19 tripled from July to August at Persahabatan, Jakarta's main referral hospital. "The government should anticipate the rise in cases by adding more medical facilities in hospitals ... but the need of the medical workers needs to be anticipated as well," Halik Malik, spokesman for Indonesia's medical association, told Reuters, acknowledging that pressure on the health system was high. "Doctors are forced to work overtime, fatigued amidst the low protection," he added. Fears that the city's healthcare system may be soon be pushed to the brink saw Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Wednesday reimpose lockdown measures starting on September 14, with residents told to work, study and pray at home. "Right now, this is an emergency -- more pressing than the start of the pandemic," he said. Without tighter social restrictions, hospitals may be forced to turn coronavirus patients away by as early as September 17, data from the Jakarta government showed. Indonesia has been battling the pandemic since March, drawing criticism from public health experts for prioritising economic over public health concerns. The Southeast Asian nation has recorded more than 203,000 cases of the coronavirus and 8336 deaths, the highest COVID-19 death toll in East Asia. On Wednesday Baswedan told Jakartans: "Please don't go out, don't leave home and do not leave Jakarta unless necessary". Meghan Was Devastated When Harry Was Stripped of His Military Titles - Yahoo Singapore News Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:06 PM PDT Meghan Was Devastated When Harry Was Stripped of His Military Titles - Yahoo Singapore News One of the hardest parts of the deal Meghan Markle and Prince Harry struck with the royal family, after the Sussexes stepped down as senior royals? Harry's loss of his honorary military titles, according to biography Finding Freedom (yes, the revelations are still coming!) The Duke of Sussex was reportedly "emotional" about being stripped of his titles, while Meghan was devastated by her husband's heartbreak, calling the demotion "so unnecessary." "The most demoralising aspect of the new deal was his being stripped of his honorary military appointments that had been awarded to him as a senior royal," Finding Freedom authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write, as Marie Claire UK reports. "As a retired serviceman, Harry would always be able to wear his medals, but no longer could he wear uniform as Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Force Commandant of the Royal Air Force Base Honington, and honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy's Small Ships and Diving Operations." An inside source told Scobie and Durand, "That's been a tough pill to swallow, and the one that has been most painful to Meghan witness him go through. It's the one that made Harry emotional." Watch: Yahoo UK's Royal Family Editor, Rebecca Taylor reveal what we know about Harry and Meghan's mega deal with Netflix Speaking to a friend, Meghan reportedly called the demotion "so unnecessary." She continued, "And it's not just taking something away from him, it's also that entire military veteran community. You can see how much he means to them, too. So why? The powers are unfortunately greater than me." Singapore chef Tan Yong Hua, 47, dies of heart failure in his sleep - AsiaOne Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:06 PM PDT Singapore chef Tan Yong Hua, 47, dies of heart failure in his sleep - AsiaOne SINGAPORE - Chinese cuisine chef Tan Yong Hua, who owned Restaurant Home in Tampines Street 43, died of heart failure in his sleep on Wednesday night (Sept 9). He was 47. An announcement on the restaurant's Facebook page on Thursday says he "passed away peacefully". He leaves behind his wife and a seven-year-old son. The Singaporean started his cooking career in his teens and worked at several five-star hotels, including Szechuan Court in Raffles The Plaza (now Fairmont Singapore) and Peach Blossom in Marina Mandarin Singapore (now Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay). He opened a restaurant, Chu Dao, in Joo Chiat Road in 2011 with a partner but they parted ways a year later. Chef Yong then started Restaurant Home in 2013, which was known for its Peking duck and homey dishes like steamed fish and rice vermicelli with pork knuckles. The restaurant moved to Cosford Road in Changi three years later and then to an HDB block in Tampines last year. Ms Koh Swee Har, 66, a retired food journalist with Lianhe Wanbao who has known the chef for more than 10 years, remembers him as an affable and helpful person. She recalls: "He was a very creative chef. He cooked a giant ocean sunfish in different ways when he was in Peach Blossom, which was the first time I tasted the fish. His vegetarian dishes at Szechuan Court, such as pumpkin rice and fried zucchini flower, were also unforgettable." Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:08 PM PDT If he's not on your team, you probably don't like him. Marcus Smart probably won't care. He may lead the NBA in flops, but nobody plays the game any harder than Smart. Smart may not be the most talented guy on the Boston Celtics, but he's definitely the guy that gets them going. Marcus Smart's NBA careerRELATED: Jayson Tatum Could Be the Best NBA Player Very Soon Says One College Coach Marcus Smart played his college basketball at Oklahoma State and was a first-round pick in the 2014 NBA draft. The Boston Celtics selected the 6-foot-3 point guard with the sixth overall pick. For much of his career, Smart has provided that spark off the bench, and that spark usually ignites a fire under his team. Smart will never lead the league in scoring, rebounding, or assists. But he will lead his team. His all-out hustle will result in a steal. He'll be the guy that will draw the charge, flop or not. Smart brings energy. He brings hustle. He brings the will to win. Back in 2018, Smart missed six weeks with a thumb injury. Celtics coach Brad Stevens couldn't wait to get Smart back on the floor. "You can look at stat sheets all you want, with Marcus it just doesn't tell the story," Stevens said to The Boston Herald. "It's . . . it's his energy, it's his emotion, it's little plays that turn out to be game-changing plays like diving on the floor." Smart has come up big for the Celtics in the playoffsMarcus Smart is known for his energy and hustle, but he has also shown he's capable of hitting the big shots when needed. He just doesn't get the respect from his opponents. In Game 2 when the Boston Celtics defeated the Toronto Raptors 102-99 to take a 2-0 series led, Smart came up big down the stretch. Smart hit five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone to spark the Celtics' victory. While the Raptors were likely focused on not letting Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker, or Jaylen Brown beat them, Smart hit the daggers that put the Raptors in the hole. Raptors star Kyle Lowry seemed to be in disbelief that Smart knocked down five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone. Lowry was asked if thought the Raptors let one get away. The Raptors' guard laughed and said, "I mean, Marcus Smart made five straight threes," Lowry said. "That was one that was just — it's tough, it's tough to give up five threes." Former teammate Kyrie Irving used to watch Smart highlights for funMarcus Smart is fun to watch. He never takes a play off. His strength is defense, and teammate Jaylen Brown said if there's a loose ball, he'll bet on Smart coming away with it. "Defensively, you see some of those crazy plays," said Jaylen Brown to The Boston Herald in 2018. "If it comes down to it, I had to put my money on anybody — no matter who it is, any sport — I'm putting my money on Smart coming up with that ball." Former teammate Kyrie Irving said there are times when he just sits in front of a TV and watches highlights of Smart. "I just watched some of (Smart's) highlights in college, as well as some of his playoff highlights, defensively and offensively, and it's just unmatched," Irving told NBC Sports back in 2018. Brexit trade talks in doubt as Britain brushes off ultimatum from Brussels - CNBC Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:08 PM PDT British Prime Minister Boris Johnson waves as he arrives at Downing Street. Leon Neal | Getty Images News | Getty Images LONDON — The British government has opted to press on with a controversial bill that could ultimately undermine a Brexit divorce deal it signed last year, despite an ultimatum and the threat of legal action from the EU. The stakes are getting higher between both sides after the U.K. government published plans that, if legislated, could alter legally-binding Brexit agreements with Brussels. The U.K.'s Internal Market Bill would grant the British government powers to not consult the EU in state aid cases involving the trade of goods between Northern Ireland and the rest of the EU. The U.K. had agreed to do the opposite when signing its divorce deal with the EU in January. The bill would also potentially change requirements that Northern Irish firms complete export summary declarations when shipping goods to the mainland. The shock move from Westminster could break international law and jeopardize not only a trade deal with the EU, but also with the U.S. In an emergency meeting Thursday in London, European officials told the U.K. government to amend its plans "in the shortest time possible and in any case by the end of the month." "By putting forward this Bill, the U.K. has seriously damaged trust between the EU and the U.K. It is now up to the U.K. government to re-establish that trust," the EU said in a statement after the meeting. It is a precondition for the EU that the U.K. respects previously legislated deals before concluding any trade agreement with the U.K. Michael Gove, who represented the U.K. government in that meeting, said the British Cabinet "would not be withdrawing" the new legislation plans. He added that the Internal Markel Bill does not override previous commitments. The EU disagrees and said it "will not be shy in using" all the available legal means if the U.K. goes ahead with the bill in its current form. Nobody knows whether this is posturing or if it is setting up for a no deal. Thomas Pugh U.K. economist at Capital Economics In the meantime, there will be further meetings between both sides next week. They have been negotiating a new trade arrangement, to be applied from Jan. 2021, since March. But the coronavirus pandemic prevented meetings between the two sides for some time. Even after a promise to speed up talks during the summer, there has been no significant progress. They remain stuck over state aid and fisheries. Some analysts believe the latest escalation over the bill could be a negotiating tactic, aiming to bridge those differences. Others have changed their forecasts, predicting that a failure in trade talks would be the most likely outcome. "Nobody knows whether this is posturing or if it is setting up for a no deal," Thomas Pugh, U.K. economist at Capital Economics, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" Friday. Without a trade agreement before the end of the year, trade between the EU and the U.K. would be done under World Trade Organization rules. This would mean higher costs and barriers for businesses on both sides of the English Channel, in comparison to the current regime. #GlitchTok Viral Creepy Videos On TikTok Claim To Show We're Living In A Simulation - Bustle Posted: 11 Sep 2020 09:47 PM PDT A lush hillside is dappled with sheep, but they've been frozen in place for an hour. A bird is crossing the skyline, but its wings are turned down. These are the kinds of videos you'll find on #GlitchTok — a creepy new corner of TikTok where users share "proof" that we're living in a glitching, Matrix-like simulation. The inexplicable eeriness of these videos is amplified by sci-fi soundtracks and comments sections ablaze with enthusiastic believers. If you were a fan of Randonautica TikTok videos, GlitchTok will scratch a similar itch. For those who are new to this particular conspiracy theory, the idea comes from "brain in a vat" scenario you might remember from Philosophy 101. It's essentially the plot of The Matrix: that human consciousness is being manipulated by an outside force that's making people believe they live with free will by simulating "normal" life experiences, despite the fact that actually, their brains are hooked up to virtual reality machines, and everything they see is fake. The thought experiment asks people to consider whether perception or reality is a more meaningful part of existence. The conspiracy theory suggests that weird occurrences — missing left shoes, floating birds — are proof that the simulation exists, and it's broken. Since the pandemic began, the theory — that we're living in a glitching simulation — has been thriving on TikTok. "Quarantine gave people time to reflect and notice these little things that they might not pay attention to in their everyday lives," GlitchTok-er Julia Kong tells Bustle. "GlitckTok is trending because people are starting to be open to the possibility that reality might not be what it seems — whether or not we live in a simulation, it's a fun 'what if' to consider," she adds. Theoretical physicist Laura Sberna, a Ph.D. candidate at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada, feels pretty sure we're not in a simulation, for the record. "I would be surprised if the creators of such a complex simulation (involving everything we observe on Earth and beyond) would be so sloppy with missing forks and spoons," she tells Bustle. Instead, Sberna is more inclined to believe there's a "simpler explanation" for the glitches going viral on TikTok. On July 14, Kong posted a storytime video explaining that her kitchen utensils have been going missing, one by one, despite always putting them away properly. Since posting, she's received over 14,000 comments on the video, featuring other lost and found kitchenware mysteries. Collectively, Kong and the commenters attribute this odd occurrence to a glitch in the Matrix. "I'm down to one fork," one comment reads. "I just found a seventh cup, even though I only bought a set of six," another one says. Kong acknowledges that, of course, these could just be coincidences, but the idea that there's others like her experiencing these "glitches" is a relief. "If life truly is a simulation, then thank goodness! Why worry? Why stress? I say, just play the game, see where it takes you, and have fun!" In GlitchTok, if there isn't an obvious explanation, it's a glitch. Rory Davis had a somewhat more troubling glitch experience. On July 23, Davis' mother told him to wake up to see a field of unmoving sheep that she'd been watching for an hour. He later uploaded an eerie video of the congregation. Over a million plays later, commenters are still trying to make sense of it. "It was like the scene in The Matrix where Morpheus is explaining to Neo about the matrix and time freezes," Davis tells Bustle. "As someone who firmly believes in science and conclusive evidence I'm actually quite open to the idea of a potential simulation," he tells Bustle. But Davis is still looking for a more logical explanation to make sense of what he experienced. Quantum physicist Gabriela Barreto Lemos has that logical explanation. "In science we use the Occam's razor principle, whereby we look for the simplest explanation which can be used for the widest variety of phenomena. This Matrix glitch conspiracy theory is rather convoluted." Instead, Lemos and Sberna attribute the sheep's behavior to more logical explanations — like the weather, or a circumstance out-of-frame. But just because physicists aren't lining up to validate this trend doesn't mean you should stop yourself from tumbling down the glitching rabbit hole, if it interests you. There are thousands of videos to lose yourself in, and comment sections to theorize in. Search for #glitch, #conspiracytheories, #matrix, #simulation, and explore from there — if you want to believe. Posted: 11 Sep 2020 09:08 PM PDT Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana met with General Wei Fenghe, the Minister of National Defense of the People's Republic of China, in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Friday. He brought up the award issued by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) to the Philippines in 2016 pertaining to its claims in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). According to a statement released by the Department of National Defense (DND), Lorenzana and Wei discussed the issue on territorial claims in the WPS and both leaders "agreed that peace and stability in South China Sea should be maintained." In an earlier version of the statement which had been recalled, the DND said Lorenzana "reaffirmed the Philippines' adherence to the award issued by the Tribunal constituted under Annex VII to the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) and its enforcement without any possibility of compromise or change." The ruling dismissed China's historical claims — based on its nine-dash line concept — in a major part of the South China Sea, including the areas within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Philippines. During the meeting, Lorenzana and Wei discussed "key issues affecting the defense organizations of both countries," the DND noted. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), according to Lorenzana, will continue "to conduct routine, legitimate maritime patrols in the WPS and challenge any activities that infringe on Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction." Lorenzana and Wei also both agreed that the Philippines and China "should continue to conduct dialogue and consultation to manage disputes" in the tension-filled waters. Lorenzana expressed optimism that the meeting with Wei will foster collaboration between Manila and Beijing's defense establishments and advance mutual trust for future exchanges on matters of security and mutual concern. "While we may not agree on some issues, as good friends and neighbors we remain firm in finding ways to improve our relations," Lorenzana said. Meanwhile, a ceremonial signing for a P1-billion donation in humanitarian and disaster response (HADR) equipment from China was also held during the meeting. Lorenzana thanked Wei for China's help in the country's HADR response capability build-up efforts. The two defense leaders also exchanged best practices in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China. For his part, Wei conveyed China's readiness to share its experience in combating COVID-19 and hoped that the Philippines "overcomes the pandemic at the earliest possible time." The defense leaders also agreed to continue working on revising the 2004 Philippines-China Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Defense Cooperation that is seen to pave the way for more personnel exchanges, trainings, and better communications channel between the AFP and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China. The visit of China's defense minister to the Philippines was the fifth since 2002. Similar visits were held in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2017. Wei's visit to the Philippines was part of his tour of selected countries in Southeast Asia at a time where China continues to tighten its grip on the hotly-contested areas in South China Sea. Two-Time Oscar-Winning Actress Offered Employment at a Target - Newsweek Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:48 PM PDT Academy Award winner Frances McDormand says she was asked to apply for a job at a Target while browsing the store during production on her latest film. McDormand said she was given an application for employment while walking around a Target in Nebraska as Nomadland was filming, according to Deadline. McDormand, who won Best Actress Oscars for Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, said she had been playing "a game of 'what if'" by attempting to blend in as her character, excitedly telling director Chloe Zhao that "it's working" after the being approached for the job. A famous actor actually taking on an hourly retail job outside of researching a role would be practically unheard of. The closest example may be the late Andy Kaufman, a noted practical joker, who moonlighted as a busboy at multiple Los Angeles restaurants while starring on the sitcom Taxi. Newsweek subscription offers > Nomadland is an adaptation, written by Zhao, of the nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder. The film features McDormand as Fern, a widow who "packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad" after leaving a Nevada town that has suffered an economic collapse. Fern joins a community of mostly elderly people who roam the country while living in recreational vehicles and vans, supporting themselves by taking low paying jobs as needed. "Real nomads" Bob Wells, Linda May and Charlene Swankie are also featured in the film, appearing as themselves. Newsweek subscription offers > McDormand told AFP that those adopting a nomadic lifestyle and choosing to live in vans "has a lot to do with the economic disparities in our country," while insisting that the film is not a "political statement." "Each individual who goes on the road has to be self-reliant," McDormand said. "But they do gather for Rubber Tyre Rendezvous because they need community for knowledge," she added, apparently referring to a real-life gathering known as the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous. "I guess you would call it a socialist situation, where it's all for one and one for all." Filming of Nomadland secretly began in late 2018 and took place over five months across seven different states, according to Indiewire. The cast and crew consisted of only 25 people, far smaller than a typical Hollywood production. "It worked really tight; everybody crossed department lines whenever something was needed, and the work got done," McDormand told Deadline. "Because of that, we were able to move very swiftly and improvisationally when necessary and live in the community of the van dwellers in a way that wasn't disruptive but cohesive." Simultaneous world premieres of Nomadland were held at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival on Friday. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 4. Metro dealers accuse T-Mobile of trying to poach customers - FierceWireless Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:44 PM PDT Fears on the part of Metro by T-Mobile dealers are escalating, as they see proposed changes by T-Mobile as threatening to their livelihoods. In a petition being circulated online, dealers suggest the changes T-Mobile is a making to its Metro by T-Mobile prepaid dealer program could affect more than 8,000 stores and 20,000 employees. Dealers' commission are getting drastically reduced, and they're being forced to buy accessories from a single vendor, which will make their costs go up, according to the dealers. Among the items the petition seeks: "Two more approved accessory vendors," as well as: "Stop T-Mobile from poaching Metro customers." Dealers who recently organized through the Metro Dealers Unity Group say the moves T-Mobile has been proposing since it's merger with Sprint are some of the most aggressive they've seen in years. Dealers' relationships with carriers always have been fraught with some degree of turmoil, regardless of the carrier; both need one another but they often disagree on terms. Some dealers are now calling for government intervention, citing the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Department of Justice's Antitrust Division. RELATED: Metro by T-Mobile dealers fight for prepaid The Metro Dealers Unity Group is separate from the National Wireless Independent Dealers Association (NWIDA), but they're both representing the interests of dealers. Even though dealers have been around for decades, NWIDA just formed a couple years ago; its board members each have been in the industry for more than 20 years. Social media messaging, email and other communications are occurring between the dealers and T-Mobile, but so far, they're pretty far apart. "Nobody's happy," said NWIDA President Adam Wolf. "We're talking to plenty of dealers," including those big and small, which don't always share the exact same concerns. However, there's no end to the impasse. "We're exploring other avenues," he said, without getting into specifics. One of the problems – and it's not exclusive to Metro, it's prevalent across the industry – is the Metro dealers are being treated as if they were franchises, and there are laws that protect franchisees, Wolf said. Dealers are more akin to licensees than franchises. "They are kind of imposing franchise-like control over companies that are not franchises," he said. "That's where we need to get that fixed. Since none of these guys are franchisees, then stop imposing things that a franchisor would do to a franchisee." T-Mobile didn't address specific complaints but provided the following statement to FierceWireless: "Independent wireless dealers are integral to Metro by T-Mobile. Always have been, always will be. Updates to our guidance and operating model are focused on providing the best customer experience possible and increasing opportunities for dealers to run successful businesses," said Jon Freier, T-Mobile's executive vice president, Consumer Markets. Jeff Moore, principal of Wave7 Research, estimated the number of Metro by T-Mobile dealers to be in the range of 8,000 and falling. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that T-Mobile had given notice to non-exclusive dealers that they would not be allowed to sell Metro by T-Mobile if they sell other brands, which effectively means, any Metro by T-Mobile dealer is now relying solely on that one brand. "If T-Mobile wants to treat us like T-Mobile but pay us like prepaid, that will not fly," said one dealer who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fear of retribution. "Based on my communication with close to now 1,000 dealers, they have expressed they are very serious about switching their store to a multi-carrier as they will have the freedom to sell what they want, make 10-15% on other prepaid bill payments vs. $0, as currently set to change 10-1." NWIDA's Wolf questioned T-Mobile's intentions and wondered if the plan is to switch everybody to T-Mobile Prepaid. "We're here for the dealer," he said. "We want to help them out. We don't want to see them get screwed. Whatever we need to do and can do, we're going to do." Denver Nuggets can't rely solely on Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray – Michael Porter Jr - Report Door Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:08 PM PDT The Denver Nuggets cannot rely solely on Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray if they want to overcome the Los Angeles Clippers, says Michael Porter Jr. Porter impressed for the Nuggets with 18 points in 23 minutes in Game 3 and looked set to build on that with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first half of Game 4 on Wednesday. However, the rookie was unable to add to his tally and missed his only two shots after half-time as the Nuggets fell to a 96-85 defeat that left them 3-1 down in the Western Conference semi-final series. Porter said his failure to score in the second half was down to a lack of touches and wants Denver to share the ball more in order to become less predictable. "That is up to the play calling, the coaches and whose hands they want to put the ball in," Porter said of his involvement in the second half. "We kept going to [Jokic] and [Murray] and they are two amazing players, you can never be mad at that, but I just think to beat them we need to get more players involved. "We have to move the ball a little bit better. We can't be predictable against that team." Asked if he felt confident voicing those concerns despite being in his first year in the NBA, he said: "I think if I am going to be out there on the floor playing a lot of minutes, I think I should voice that. "I will probably talk to the coaches and tell them what I see being out there on the floor just letting them know, look, they know what we are doing. "We have to swing the ball. We have a lot of players that can play basketball and score, so we have to get some more guys involved." The Nuggets came back to progress from 3-1 down against the Utah Jazz in the first round and coach Michael Malone believes his team have plenty of fight left in them. "The same message will be what it was against Utah," said Malone. "It wasn't that we have to come back and win three games. It was, let's win Game 5. And then after that, let's win one at a time. Let's win 6 and then win 7. "We have done it. It is a different opponent. Very talented, deep team, but I think we do have confidence in being a resilient group and being a team that when everyone else has written us off, we have found a way."

US to ASEAN: Reconsider deals with blacklisted China firms - Yahoo Sport UK Posted: 11 Sep 2020 05:08 PM PDT HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asked Southeast Asian nations Thursday to reconsider deals with Chinese companies blacklisted by Washington for building island outposts he says Beijing is using to "bully" rival claimants in the disputed South China Sea. Pompeo spoke with counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in an annual conference by video due to the coronavirus pandemic. Four of the members — the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei — have been locked in the long-raging territorial conflict with China, along with Taiwan, over the busy waterway, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety. Although the U.S. lays no claim to the South China Sea, the Trump administration has recently imposed sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for Beijing's military buildup in the area. It includes airfields and radar and missile stations on islands constructed atop coral reefs, raising fears China may interfere with freedom of navigation in international waters. "I think keep going, don't just speak up but act," Pompeo told top diplomats from the 10-nation bloc, without elaborating. A State Department spokeswoman said he pressed for a peaceful resolution of the disputes. China does not respect democratic values and principles of sovereignty, quality and territorial integrity enshrined in the ASEAN charter, Pompeo said. He cited the U.S. blacklisting of about two dozen Chinese companies for their roles in constructing artificial islands in the disputed waters that infringe on other states' claims. "Reconsider business dealing with the very state-owned companies that bully ASEAN coastal states in the South China Sea," Pompeo said. "Don't let the Chinese Communist Party walk over us and our people. You should have confidence and the American will be here in friendship to help you," he said. It's not clear how many ASEAN members have dealings with the Chinese construction companies blacklisted by the U.S. Commerce Department. But Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's administration said last week it would not follow the U.S. move and will allow one of the blacklisted firms or its subsidiary to partner with a local company for an airport project in Cavite province south of Manila. The U.S. has challenged China's sweeping territorial claims by deploying warships and fighter jets for what it calls freedom of navigation and overflight patrols in the disputed waters. There was no immediate comment from China or its foreign minister, Wang Yi, who was participating in the ASEAN meetings and separately met the group's ministers Wednesday. China has insisted it has right to safeguard its national interests and accuses Washington of interfering in regional affairs. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, whose country is hosting ASEAN meetings this year, warmed up to Pompeo's remarks, saying "the ASEAN-U.S. relationship has brought about mutual benefit to both sides." "The U.S. role and contribution to maintaining peace, stability and security in the region are encouraged," he said. ASEAN, founded in 1967, has struggled to stay away from the escalating rivalry between Washington and Beijing. It has often asserted its "centrality" and regional leadership although some critics dismiss the group as a talk shop that is often vulnerable to the sway of world powers. Depending on how ASEAN deals with issues, "they can either result in disaster or a new dawn of peace and stability for our region," Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told colleagues on Tuesday. "The challenge here is leadership – do we lead or do we follow?" he asked. "Make no mistake — Southeast Asia intends to remain the master of its own destiny." ___ Associated Press journalists Jim Gomez in Manila, Philippines, Eileen Ng in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Matthew Lee in Washington contributed to this report.
