Week’s Best: BofA’s Mobile App Upgrade - Barron's

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:44 PM PDT

Bank of America is making it easier for clients to manage all of their accounts on their devices. This week, the nation's No. 2 bank by assets announced upgrades to its mobile app that allow Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank clients to see information on retirement and investment accounts—and to place trades. Merrill clients shouldn't delete the MyMerrill app, though; they'll still need it for functions such as secure messaging with advisors.

In other wealth management news this week:

Ray Jay makes a big hire. A wealth management team in the Kansas City area that managed $1.2 billion at UBS has joined Raymond James' employee channel. The team, led by financial advisors Robert Meeder, Darryl Dunn, and Jared Stricklin, will work out of Raymond James' new Kansas City office and operate as MDS Advisors of Raymond James.

Tougher regs. Massachusetts just started enforcement of its fiduciary rule for brokers, the first such regulation to be fully implemented by a state. The rule holds brokers to a fiduciary standard when making investment recommendations to clients. Financial firms and consumer advocates alike will closely monitor how Massachusetts, known for aggressive securities enforcement, applies the rule.

Creative Planning cuts biggest deal yet. Peter Mallouk's Creative Planning, a huge RIA with more than $50 billion in AUM, is boosting its presence in the Atlanta area with the purchase of TrueWealth, an RIA managing $1.7 billion in assets. It's Creative Planning's largest deal since it started down the acquisition path early last year.

In focus. Creative Planning isn't the only big RIA acquirer that's been busy recently. This week, Focus Financial Partners said it was acquiring New York-based Seasons of Advice as its 67th partner firm. Focus also said partner firm Buckingham Strategic Wealth was making two subacquisitions.

Tibergien's next act. Mark Tibergien may have retired in May as the head of the RIA custody business he built at BNY Mellon|Pershing, but he's not leaving the industry entirely. Tibergien is joining the board of Pathstone, a New Jersey-based multifamily office that manages more than $10 billion in assets.

Have a great Labor Day weekend.

‘It is a disgrace’: Biden demands apology after reports Trump called fallen troops ‘losers’ - CNBC

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:09 PM PDT

WASHINGTON — A furious Joe Biden demanded Friday that President Donald Trump "humbly apologize" to the families of fallen U.S. service members following reports that Trump called them "losers" and "suckers."

Biden, the Democratic nominee, invoked the military history of his own son — Beau Biden, who died of cancer in 2015 — as he denounced the president, who has denied making the reported comments.

"When my son was an assistant U.S. attorney and he volunteered to go to Kosovo while the war was going on as a civilian, he wasn't a sucker," Biden said. "When my son volunteered and joined the United States military as the attorney general and went to Iraq for a year, won the Bronze Star and other commendations, he wasn't a sucker," Biden said.

"The servicemen and women he served with, particularly those who did not come home, were not losers. If these statements are true, the president should humbly apologize to every Gold Star mother and father and every Blue Star family that he's denigrated and insulted," Biden added.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden talks with his son U.S. Army Capt. Beau Biden (L) at Camp Victory on July 4, 2009 near Baghdad, Iraq. Bidden's first visit to Iraq as the Vice President comes days after U.S. forces pulled out from Iraq's cities.

Biden's remarks came a day after The Atlantic reported that Trump declined to visit an American cemetery near Paris in 2018 and referred to U.S. Marines buried there as "losers" and "suckers."

"Why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers," Trump told aides after scrapping the visit to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, according to The Atlantic. The magazine did not identify the aides. The report said Trump later referred to the more than 1,800 Marines who lost their lives in the Battle of Belleau Wood in France as "suckers" for getting killed.

At the time, Trump publicly blamed his decision to scrap the visit on bad weather that scuttled his helicopter flight. He never explained why he didn't take a car to the site.

The 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood dragged on for 20 days and ended with U.S. Marines successfully clearing out German camps. The Allied victory became an enduring symbol in U.S. Marine Corps history.

"I've just never been as disappointed in my whole career," Biden later said in the remarks. "It is a disgrace."

Trump had used the same word to describe the article itself. "To think that I would make statements negative to our military and fallen heroes when nobody has done what I've done," for the U.S. armed forces, Trump told reporters Thursday night. "It's a total lie ... It's a disgrace."

Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh said in a statement to CNBC that, "The bogus attacks are the same as we heard in 2018 immediately following the trip to Paris and they are just as false now. "Every aspect of this charade should be dismissed out of hand," Murtaugh said in the statement, which did not directly address Biden's remarks.

Members of the Trump administration also denied that the president spoke disparagingly about fallen U.S. military personnel buried at the cemetery.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during an interview on "Fox & Friends" that he has "never heard the president use the language that is certainly said in that article about him calling military suckers and losers."

"Indeed, just the contrary, he has always had the deepest respect. I'm a veteran, too. I care deeply about these young men and women, and I have watched the president honor them and every situation that I've been in with him as well," Pompeo said.

In a statement Friday, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said Trump "has the highest respect and admiration for our nation's military members, veterans and families," adding, "That is why he has fought for greater pay and more funding for our armed forces."

Vice President Mike Pence told CNBC on Friday that he was not on the particular trip referenced in The Atlantic article but, "it never happened."

"I talked to the president that day, I know how disappointed the president was that there was a bad weather call. I've never been with anyone who cares more deeply about the men and women of our armed forces or respects them and their families than President Donald Trump," Pence said.

Russia's Covid-19 vaccine generated an immune response, study says - CNN

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:09 PM PDT

Russia drew criticism when it announced the world's first approved coronavirus vaccine for public use in August -- even before crucial Phase 3 trials had been completed.
In the Phase 1 and 2 studies of the vaccine, which is named Sputnik V, all 76 study participants developed antibodies to the virus that causes Covid-19, according to Friday's report in The Lancet.
The levels of neutralizing antibody response were similar to the immune response that people had after naturally recovering from Covid-19, according to the study.
A handout photo released by Russian Healthcare ministry (Minzdrav) shows containers with a newly registered vaccine against coronavirus in Moscow, Russia.
The researchers also looked at responses from T cells, another component of the immune system.
"[Outcomes from] the trial also suggest the vaccines also produce a T cell response within 28 days," the researchers wrote.

Larger trials needed

Scientists not involved in the study said that, while the results are a positive sign, only larger, Phase 3 trials can confirm whether the vaccine actually prevents illness with Covid-19.
"The data on the Russian vaccine studies reported in The Lancet are encouraging," said Brendan Wren, professor of microbial pathogenesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
In the study, half of the participants developed fevers and 42% developed headaches. In addition, about 28% experienced weakness and 24% had joint pain.
The article did not say how long these side effects lasted but said "most adverse events were mild."
The vaccine was registered in Russia in August, before it had gone through large-scale trials. The researchers at the Gamaleya National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia received approval on August 26 to do a Phase 3 trial, which is expected to have 40,000 volunteers, according to a press release from The Lancet.
The researchers are already distributing the vaccine to high-risk groups, according to Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is financing Russian vaccine research.
Gamaleya is using adenoviruses in their Covid-19 vaccines; this is the same approach used in the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca. The adenovirus delivers genetic material for the spike protein that sits atop the virus that causes Covid-19, and that genetic material is designed to generate an immune response to the virus.
Adenoviruses can cause a variety of symptoms, including the common cold. The researchers manipulate the virus so it will not replicate and cause illness.
The Gamaleya vaccine is given in two doses, and each dose uses a different adenovirus vector.
"Using two different viruses gives a theoretical advantage," said Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccinologist at the University of Pennsylvania.
Naor Bar-Zeev, deputy director of the International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins University, said in a linked comment that the studies are "encouraging but small," according to The Lancet. Bar-Zeev was not involved in the Russian study, but peer reviewed it.
Dmitriev, CEO of the RDIF, said that the trial results confirm the "high safety and efficacy" of the vaccine, adding in a statement Friday that the results are "a powerful response to skeptics who unreasonably criticized the Russian vaccine."

Mass trials begin next week

Russia has previously said it plans to begin mass vaccination of citizens in October, and the country's health ministry has said the country's frontline medical staff and teachers will be the first vaccinated.
Post-registration trials of the vaccine will begin in Moscow next week, the city's mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, said Friday.
More than 5,000 people have already signed up to participate in the trials, according to Sobyanin, who spoke during a video conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Sobyanin also announced that he had been vaccinated with the first of the vaccine's two shots.
The mayor said polls suggest around half of Russian citizens are skeptical about the vaccine.
"According to the polls, around half doubt whether they need to get vaccinated for coronavirus, whether it is developed enough or not. Two months ago, there were almost 90% skeptics," said Sobyanin.
Without completed Phase 3 trials, Russia has not proven to the world Sputnik V works, though Dmitriev has previously said several countries in Latin America, the Middle East and Asia have expressed interest in procuring the vaccine.
Russia isn't the only country fast tracking its vaccine -- China approved an experimental coronavirus vaccine in June for members of its military, and in August, it emerged the country had been using the vaccine on those in "high risk" professions -- such as frontline medical professionals and border inspectors -- since July.

Viral TikTok: teen's mother falls through ceiling in audition video - Insider - INSIDER

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 10:47 PM PDT

  • Liz San Millen is going viral for a TikTok video in which her mother makes an unexpected appearance — by falling through the ceiling in the background.
  • The 18-year-old, who is moving to New York to study musical theater, was filming herself singing in preparation for upcoming auditions when her mother fell from the attic.
  • The video has over 6 million views and is getting attention from established TikTok stars.
  • San Millen says her mother is "fine" and loving viral fame.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Liz San Millan was preparing for her move from Texas to New York, where she plans to study musical theater, when she unintentionally went viral on TikTok.

The 18-year-old was filming herself singing — practicing for auditions that will determine her placement in classes at the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts — when her mother's leg suddenly crashed through the ceiling in the background.

"I heard this really loud noise and I turned around and see her leg plunge into my room," San Millan told Insider. "It was crazy."

The fall, San Millan says, happened after an ill-fated step off a wooden beam in the attic. Her mother had been searching for luggage to bring to New York when she inadvertently stepped onto unstable attic flooring.

"In the video, you can kind of see the irritation in my face because I told my mom I was filming and I could hear her banging around up there looking for stuff," she recalled. "Then she tripped over her flip flops and fell through."

In less than a week, the video was viewed over 6.5 million times, and even TikTok's high profile content creators are taking notice.

"WHY DIDN'T SHE SAY ANYTHING," TikTok star and comedian Brittany Broski, better known as "Kombucha Girl," commented.

"Your mom is the star of the show," another commenter quipped, to which San Millan replied, "Yes, she is."

Concerned viewers demanded a follow-up video, and the aspiring performer delivered.

"She's fine, by the way," San Millan assured viewers. "What a woman. Didn't even get a bruise."

While the footage of the event was "awesome," she said, the unexpected cameo in her video "scared the crap out of [her]."

San Millan's mother, however, is fully enjoying her viral fame.

"My mom's been going on my TikTok and replying to some of the comments," the teenager told Insider.

The ceiling has not yet been repaired, but San Millan insists her father is "working on it."

Lessons From a Viral Obituary - Editor And Publisher Magazine

Kristen Hare | RJI

Once in a while, notice of someone's death takes on a life all its own – the addict who was also a mother with a beautiful voice, the hard-living, sweet-souled uncle, the former beauty queen grandma who wrote her own obituary.

Three months into my RJI fellowship experimenting with obituaries, I've been thinking a lot about what makes an obit also a good read. What makes people share them? What do they have in common?

Gossip mill: Ann Kok turns down 4 dramas in a row, doesn't miss being an Ah Jie - and other entertainment news this week - AsiaOne

Ann Kok turns down 4 dramas in a row, doesn't miss being an Ah Jie

She was once an Ah Jie in local showbiz, alongside fellow actresses Zoe Tay and Fann Wong. However, her star has dimmed in recent times ever since she took a step back from filming. But she doesn't mind it at all.

In a recent interview with Shin Min Daily News, the 47-year-old actress revealed her reason for turning down four drama roles back to back. She simply said: "The roles weren't suitable."

When it comes to selecting roles, Ann prefers one that provides a challenge and also allows her some space for creativity. Other factors she looks at include the script and her co-stars.

As for her Ah Jie status, she said: "What's past is past. If the shows I'm in still receive good viewership, and people call me Ah Jie, I would be honoured. But I really don't have any productions now. I am grateful that a majority of my fans didn't stop supporting me just because I didn't act in any shows."

'Shot and hospitalised', Mark Lee consoles himself that he's gone international

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/CEoc5U1JevE/[/embed]

We're not sure if local comedian Mark Lee is pantang, but he's making a joke out of it.

The 51-year-old recently found himself the subject of a scam but this time, no one is impersonating him. Instead, the scam falsely claims that he has been shot and hospitalised due to an interview he supposedly did about bitcoin.

He put up a public service announcement on his Instagram and wrote in Mandarin: "This is getting out of hand. I didn't even know I was shot and hospitalised. I made a police report but they can't do anything since [the scam] is from Europe.

"I guess I have to console myself because I've gone international? Please know how to differentiate what's real and fake. Don't get scammed."

TVB actors work part-time as movers to earn extra income during Covid-19 pandemic

The pandemic has hit the Hong Kong showbiz industry hard.

Unfortunately, not everyone can be Moses Chan, who reportedly managed to negotiate a clause (while renewing his contract last year) that saw TVB paying him a monthly salary even when he isn't working.

It was recently reported that TVB actors Keith Mok and Penny Chan had to find work as movers to supplement their income. Their job mainly consists of moving solar panels and they work for nine hours a day, receiving HKD$900 (S$158) for a day's work.

Dirty Dancing Meets West Philadelphia in viral video - WPVI-TV

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:47 PM PDT

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- It was a movie about unexpected summer love and how dancing connected two people who wouldn't have otherwise been a couple.

We are talking about "Dirty Dancing," and there must be something about the music because we're also talking about two West Philadelphia friends whose spontaneous sidewalk dance isn't just going viral... it's getting the two stars thinking: maybe there is something there!

Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze put a lot of time into perfecting their iconic final routine, but Lakia Garrick and Carl Scarborough did it impromptu after a card game with friends.

They had never danced together before!

The duo met just a month ago over a Facebook group and have become fast friends but now that their video has gone viral...well it has them thinking.

"I don't know I would say it sparked a little something... I wasn't expecting it to go viral like it did and people were just like, 'look at that couple and see how in love they are, I'm like that's not where we were heading with that," said Lakia, while laughing.

Life can lead you in all sorts of directions when you least expect it!

Lakia tells Action News they are both single and have been finding out very quickly how much they have in common.

Including their love for 80's dance routines.

We should add that Max, the guy who recorded the moment from his window, says he's very excited about how much joy the video has brought to people... and that Lakia and Carl aced the lift the first time, but he didn't capture that.

The video has more than 200,000 views and counting... which will mean that's going to be one very big wedding if that dancing chemistry turns into something more.

Kai Havertz finally completes £89m Chelsea transfer as Frank Lampard's spree hits £230m - Daily Mail

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:09 PM PDT

Kai Havertz finally completes record £89m Chelsea transfer as Frank Lampard's phenomenal summer spending spree hits £230m by landing Germany wonderkid from Leverkusen

  • Kai Havertz has completed his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea
  • The 21-year-old could cost the Stamford Bridge side £89m, including add-ons
  • The move takes the club's spending this month to a staggering £230m
  • He is the sixth signing through the door, following fellow German Timo Werner
  • Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech have all joined, too

Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of Germany wonderkid Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of £89million.

He becomes the club's sixth major signing of an incredible transfer window, taking their total spending to an enormous £230m.

The move makes the 21-year-old the joint most expensive player ever signed by a British club, along with Paul Pogba, who joined Manchester United in 2016. The Premier League transfer record is £145m, which Liverpool received from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho.

Havertz is also the most expensive German player of all time, and his signing also sees Chelsea smash their own transfer record, dwarfing the £72m previously spent on goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is now set to leave the club having failed to live up to his price tag.

'I am very happy and proud to be here,' Havertz said. 'For me it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can't wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!'

This is the high-water mark on an incredible window for Chelsea, which has seen transfer chief Marina Granovskaia land all of the club's top targets.

Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner had already been secured before the window had opened, the Morocco international joining from Ajax for £38million, while Germany striker Werner arrived from RB Leipzig for £53m.

Both made their debuts during the friendly with Brighton on August 30, which saw fans allowed into the stadium at the AMEX to watch Premier League sides for the first time since March.

Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva have both been brought in on free transfers, while Ben Chilwell has also joined for £50m from Leicester City.

Chelsea director Granovskaia said of landing Havertz: 'Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future lies at Chelsea. He has proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national side and he is an exciting, dynamic talent. We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins.'

Frank Lampard's side begin their Premier League campaign on Monday September 14, when they visit Brighton once more.

DC woman harrassed by BLM protesters in viral video still supports movement - New York Post

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:47 PM PDT

The Washington, DC, woman caught in a viral video getting harassed by anti-police brutality protesters says she still supports the Black Lives Matter movement — she just didn't like being bullied.

"I wholeheartedly support the Black Lives Matter movement," urban planner and photographer Lauren Victor says in a Washington Post opinion piece.

"I also support an individual's choice to participate in a protest, or not."

Victor said she has even participated in BLM demonstrations since the group surrounded her while she ate outdoors on Aug. 24.

But "it is never okay to coerce people's participation; that is just bullying," she wrote.

"To be clear, this is not an argument against anger, expressed loudly, about terrible things that are allowed to happen," Victor added.

"My desire is simply to see the vital energy that anger gives rise to be effectively directed to bring about important, lasting change."

The viral video shows a crowd of young demonstrators closely surrounding Victor as they shouted, "White silence is violence!" and "Put your fist up!"

But Victor didn't raise her first in the clip because she was unaware of the protest's cause, she said in the opinion piece.

No one in the group told her why they were marching when she asked, she said.

"When they crowded around my table and started demanding that I raise my fist, it was their insistence that I participate in something that I did not understand that led me to withhold my hand," she said.

"In retrospect, I would have done the same thing even if it was crystal clear to me who they were and what they stood for. If you want my support, ask it of me freely," Victor added.

"That's what we do in a democracy."

Victor went on to write that her video has become a "global Rorschach test," that is interpreted differently depending on the ideology of the viewer.

She conceded that the video looks "scary," but stressed that she was "not hurt in any way."

While she felt fear at the moment, she said she still had great hope for the movement.

"This was a group of mostly young people of many racial backgrounds working together to sustain a movement to uphold Black people's civil rights," she concluded.

"There are worse ways to spend a Monday night."

Covid-19 vaccine tracker, Sept 5: Vaccine extremely unlikely but not impossible before US election, says White House advisor - The Indian Express

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Vaccine Tracker: The race for producing a coronavirus vaccine has now got converted into a race to produce it before the November 3 US Presidential elections. The entire discussion on vaccines is now centred around the question whether a vaccine can be made available, even notionally, before that date.

Developments of the last few days suggest that, at least in the United States, that was the goal everyone was working to achieve. The Food and Drug Administration, the drug regulator, has said it was open to granting emergency use authorisation to a vaccine even before the completion of the phase-3 trials, if the initial results were promising. It said it was up to the vaccine developers to make the application for emergency use authorisation, and if the FDA found the application "appropriate", it may consider granting approval.

On Thursday, Pfizer, one of the leading contenders to produce the vaccine, said it was hoping to get the effectiveness data from the ongoing phase-3 trials by the end of October, and if the results were satisfactory, it would move immediately to seek emergency use authorisation from the FDA.

In between, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention told public health officials all over the country to be prepared for a vaccination programme for targeted groups "as soon as late October or early November".

📣 Express Explained is now on Telegram. Click here to join our channel (@ieexplained) and stay updated with the latest

On Friday, Moncef Slaoui, chief advisor for White House's vaccine programme, joined the discussion, saying it was "extremely unlikely" though "not impossible" for a vaccine to be made available by the end of next month. He said the CDC directive to public health officials to be ready was the "right thing to do", because it would be "irresponsible" not to be ready, if the vaccine indeed was available by next month.

But a vaccine before November 3 is largely a symbolic goal for the United States. It is not meant to be, and cannot be, made available to a large number of people. Only a few high-risk groups, like elderly with co-morbid conditions or healthcare workers, would be selected for vaccination. And though some of the vaccine developers have already started manufacturing their doses, assuming that everything will go well, and their candidates would ultimately get the regulatory approval, the volumes required for largescale vaccination would not be possible by that deadline.

Add to that the increasing scepticism amongst the US public to these fast-tracked vaccines. Successive polls have revealed that a substantial proportion of the population in the United States was less than enthusiastic about taking a vaccine that had not followed the usual procedures for ensuring safety and effectiveness. A new poll published in the USA Today on Friday claimed that two-thirds of the respondents were not in favour of getting a shot as soon as it was available, and at least 25 per cent said they would not take it ever.

Also read | Reading Russian vaccine trial results

And, the race to be the first one to produce a coronavirus vaccine is already over. The Chinese and the Russian vaccines have already beaten everyone by a distant margin. At least three Chinese vaccines, apart from the one developed by Russia's Gamaleya Institute, have so far won regulatory approvals, though none of them has undergone phase-3 trials, a mandatory step in normal circumstances. These vaccines are now planning phase-3 trials, but simultaneously, they would also continue to be injected on high-risk group.

The developers of the Russian vaccine have published results of phase-1 and phase-2 trials, conducted in two hospitals in Moscow, in The Lancet magazine. The developers have claimed that their vaccine was not just safe — it did not elicit any adverse reaction on the 76 participants in the trials — it also triggered "strong" immune responses in the volunteers.

Hunt for coronavirus vaccine: The story so far

  • More than 175 vaccine candidates in pre-clinical or clinical trials
  • 34 of them in clinical trials
  • Eight in final stages, phase-III of human trials
  • At least eight candidate vaccines being developed in India. Two of these have entered phase -II trials after completing phase-I.

Most people likely won't get a coronavirus vaccine until the middle of 2021 - CNBC

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 06:08 PM PDT

The vaccine by Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna Inc., generated antibodies similar to those seen in people who have recovered from COVID-19 in a study volunteers who were given either a low or medium dose.

Most Americans likely won't get immunized with a coronavirus vaccine until the middle of next year, U.S. officials and public health experts say, even as the federal government asks states to prepare to distribute a vaccine as soon as November.

U.S. health officials expect to know whether at least one of the three potential vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer and AstraZeneca in late-stage testing works by the end of the year or sooner. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said Thursday the company could have results from its late-stage coronavirus vaccine trial as early as October.

Whichever vaccine wins regulatory authorization from the Food and Drug Administration, it will likely be in short supply once it's cleared for public distribution, officials and experts warn. The vaccine will likely require two doses at varying intervals, and states still face logistical challenges such as setting up distribution sites and acquiring enough needles, syringes and bottles needed for immunizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently asking states to expedite the approval process for medical supply company McKesson so it can set up coronavirus vaccination sites across the U.S. by Nov. 1. The agency said states may need to waive some licensing and permit requirements that could bog down the process.

Still, a vaccine ready for public distribution in November is "extremely unlikely," Dr. Moncef Slaoui, who is leading the Trump administration's Operation War Speed initiative, said in an interview with NPR that published Thursday evening.

"There is a very, very low chance that the trials that are running as we speak" could be ready before the end of October, he told NPR.  "And therefore, there could be — if all other conditions required for an Emergency Use Authorization are met — an approval. I think it's extremely unlikely but not impossible."

He said he "firmly" believes a vaccine will be available before the end of the year and "in quantities that can immunize patients at the highest risk, which means very old people, 70 years and older, and maybe people that are highly exposed on the first line."

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former FDA commissioner, said broad distribution of a coronavirus vaccine in the U.S. is likely "a 2021 event."

He said the vaccine will likely be authorized by the FDA in stages where "incremental groups are getting access to the vaccine through the end of this year, assuming that they work and that they're demonstrated to be safe and effective."

On Tuesday, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a draft proposal for distributing a vaccine in the U.S. if and when one is approved for public use. The report was requested by the National Institutes of Health and the CDC.

The vaccine would be distributed in four phases, with health-care workers, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions getting vaccinated first, according to the group. Essential workers, teachers and people in homeless shelters as well as people in prisons would be next on the list, followed by children and young adults.

The CDC estimates there are between 17 million and 20 million health-care workers in the U.S. alone, almost the entire number of vaccine doses the U.S. expects to have by the end of the year, according to Slaoui. He told NPR the U.S. should be able to immunize up to 25 million people by the end of the year.

He said the nation will "be able to immunize the U.S. population by the middle of 2021."

Gottlieb was a little more optimistic on the timing during an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Friday. He said a vaccine will be broadly available by the first quarter, "maybe it's more like the first half of 2021 ... but it's clearly going to slip into 2021."

An emergency use authorization allows the FDA "to stage the authorization, the access to the vaccine, to different high-risk groups while they continue to collect data," he said.

It also "allows the FDA to collect a lot of data, post market data, around the use of a product and effectively stand up what would be the equivalent of a registry where they're continuing to collect safety and efficacy data on people as they get vaccinated."

"In terms of having a vaccine available for broad distribution where you can actually go to your doctor's office or distribution site and get the vaccine ... that's clearly I think a 2021 event," Gottlieb said.

The World Health Organization also doesn't see widespread vaccinations until the middle of next year. The agency said phase three trials underway will take longer as scientists need to assess whether the vaccines are "truly protective."

"You also need to see how safe it is," WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said. "There are earlier phases you do look at safety and you look at safety very, very carefully before you go into the phase three. But you need to be following safety at all stages, so that makes it a longer process."

A key forecast predicts the U.S. will top more than 410,000 Covid-19 deaths by the end of the year as the country heads into the fall and winter, according to new projections from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Covid-19 has already killed at least 186,800 people in the U.S., according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The model by IHME, whose models have previously been cited by the White House and state officials, forecasts that the death toll will more than double by Jan. 1 and could reach as high as 620,000 if states aggressively ease coronavirus restrictions and people disregard public health guidance.

Pro-democracy activists are again calling on people to boycott 'Mulan' - CNN

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong are reigniting calls to boycott the film, now joined by activists in Thailand and Taiwan. The calls erupted last year when the film's lead actress Liu Yifei expressed support for Hong Kong police, who anti-government demonstrators accuse of using excessive force to quell unrest.
"This film is released today. But because Disney kowtows to Beijing, and because Liu Yifei openly and proudly endorses police brutality in Hong Kong, I urge everyone who believes in human rights to #BoycottMulan," prominent Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong tweeted on Friday.
Yifei, a Chinese-born US citizen, waded into the conversation last year at the height of the protests in Hong Kong, which began as largely peaceful demonstrations and eventually morphed into frequent clashes between protesters and police.
"I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong," she posted on Weibo in August 2019.
Calls to boycott "Mulan" followed immediately after and soon enough, #BoycottMulan was trending on Twitter -- which is banned in China. Meanwhile, comments on Yifei's post on Weibo, the dominant social platform in China, echoed her support for Hong Kong police and Beijing.

International audiences are key for 'Mulan'

Now after multiple delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, "Mulan" is out on Disney+ in the US and is set to hit theaters abroad soon. International audiences, particularly in China, are a key part of the film's theatrical strategy.
But tensions are still high in Hong Kong after Beijing imposed a controversial national security law on the city in June.
And now, renewed calls to boycott "Mulan" have also spread to activists in Thailand and Taiwan -- propelled in large part by the #MilkTeaAlliance, an online movement uniting pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, Thailand and Taiwan with concerns about China's influence in the region.
In recent weeks, Thailand has been seeing demonstrations with thousands of people calling for reforms of the country's monarchy. Many protesters in Hong Kong have expressed support for the movement, while protesters in Thailand and Taiwan are standing with those in Hong Kong who are calling to boycott "Mulan."
"I invite everyone to #boycottMulan #banMulan to make Disney and the Chinese government know that state violence against the people is unacceptable," Thai student activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal tweeted, according to The Guardian.
But in China, where people were supportive of Yifei's comments last year, the film is expected to be a hit with audiences. The film is set to open in theaters there on September 11.

Lionel Messi has made it very clear he is staying at Barcelona reluctantly after transfer saga - Daily Mail

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:08 PM PDT

Lionel Messi has made it very clear he is staying at the Nou Camp reluctantly... the Argentine has agreed an uneasy truce with the Barcelona board after trying to force through Manchester City transfer

  • Barcelona fans will forgive Lionel Messi after he attempted to leave the club
  • It is unlikely manager Ronald Koeman will be as generous when Messi returns
  • The Dutchman will only tolerate those who are fully committed to Blaugrana
  • After withering words in his interview, Messi is not fit to wear captain's armband

As defeats go, Lionel Messi's failure to force a move to Manchester City will be almost as painful as Barcelona's 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich.

At least that Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon will now not go down as his last game for the club.

'My attitude will not change, for all that I wanted to leave. I will give my best,' he said in the lengthy interview that confirmed he was staying.

Messi will get no trouble from Barcelona supporters. The vast majority have been given too much enjoyment over the last 15 years to hold a grudge. And those who have turned on him for flirting with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City will not be in the stadium to jeer him anyway, as the pandemic continues to keep the public away.

But with team-mates and his new coach Ronald Koeman things might not be as easy.

Until a coronavirus test confirms he is OK to train with the rest of the squad he will work in isolation. But sooner or later he will have to put himself under the orders of Koeman just two weeks after telling him he didn't want to play for him.

At his unveiling, Koeman made no secret of his desire to only work with players who want to be at Barcelona. The Dutch coach knows that the crown weighs heavy. He is a Barca legend who had to navigate the final seasons of his playing career. But as a manager he has built a reputation as a disciplinarian.

There have been suggestions of a desire to 'do away with certain players' privileges'. Such whispers imply a crackdown on Messi being viewed at the club as 'a separate case' for all that he has achieved.

There could also be an awkward reunion with team-mates who remained, for the most part, silent about his proposed departure.

The captain question will be raised too. It will be one thing to pull on the jersey again, but can he wear the armband? Koeman was already thinking about who his new skipper might be and Marc-Andre ter Stegen was tipped to join Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto as the club's fourth captain.

Messi spoke often in the interview on Friday of how he believes the team are simply not strong enough to be competitive in the Champions League — hardly a vote of confidence for those around him. His family will be happy. He admitted: 'When I told my wife and children (about leaving the club), it was a drama. I had the whole family crying, my children did not want to leave Barcelona.'

But for Messi the player, it is harder to see positives. At least in January he will be free to negotiate a move without arguments over clauses.

Manchester City may still be an option next year. The club's hierarchy, including Guardiola, had offered private support to Messi, while publicly being careful never to commit themselves.

The bond with his old coach may have been strengthened. But if he is to play for him again, it will only be after a return to action for Barcelona, the club he had convinced himself he would not play for again.

How that goes remains to be seen.
