"Parents need to know a date and so does staff," Tularosa Municipal Schools Superintendent Brenda Vigil said.

The meeting was held via Zoom and several teachers attended the meeting.

"As far as the teachers I know in terms of morale and just having that date, that's huge, so the we can make plans," Tularosa Middle School teacher Kristina Shaw said. "I know that there's a hardship with the parents but I think if we started them back, who knows what the flu difference and COVID difference is if they come in and then we'd just be shutting back down. I like the idea of the October date."

New Mexico schools were ordered to teach virtually for the beginning of the year until emergency health orders put in place by the New Mexico Public Education Deparment and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham were eased to allow public schools to resume in-person instruction in counties wit lower COVID-19 positivity rates.

Otero County is one of those low COVID-19 positive counties that has been given permission to reopen as early as Sept. 8.

“New Mexico educators from the Public Education Department to the classroom remain committed to two overarching goals: protecting the health and safety of children and staff and maximizing the number of in-person learning opportunities,” New Mexico Public Education Secretary Ryan Stewart said.

“We have been preparing for this extensively, and I’m confident we will execute a safe in-person return for all communities that choose to do so.”

Districts and charter schools in green lit counties could undergo reentry only in the hybrid format.

School districts can opt to remain on virtual only learning, if they deem themselves not ready for the hybrid method, a state Public Education Department press release stated.

The state Public Education Department mandated that only elementary students be allowed to go back to in-person learning.

Cloudcroft Municipal Schools

Cloudcroft Municipal School District opted for the earlier re-entry date for elementary students.

Kindergarten through grade two will begin on Sept. 8 and third through fifth grades will begin on Sept. 15.

The third through fifth graders will be on a virtual schedule.

Secondary students will return on a date to be determined once the state Public Education Department allows.
