Austria will go into a three-week lockdown on November 17 to stem a rise in coronavirus infections, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Saturday.
"My urgent request: don't meet anyone!" Kurz tweeted. "Every social contact is one too many."
Austria already had a nighttime curfew, but the measures are being tightened. The latest restrictions, set to end on December 6, will mean people are required to stay at home apart from to go shopping or take exercise. Kurz said the measures were "extremely drastic" but said this was "the only way we can prevent our health system from being overwhelmed."
"One thing is clear: Nobody wants schools, restaurants, shops, etc. to be closed. But we have to take this step together."
Non-essential shops and hairdressers will be closed. Schools for younger pupils will only be open to those requiring childcare. Secondary schools are already using distance learning.
