CLEVELAND, Ohio — How are companies protecting their employees during the coronavirus pandemic? How are they keeping up morale, rewarding hard work, and helping maintain a work-life balance when life is turned sideways?
Cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer will recognize Northeast Ohio’s best employers in its 12th annual Top Workplaces contest.
We’re partnering with Energage, a culture technology firm that specializes in employee engagement and workplace improvement research and has worked with media in 53 markets to survey more than 2 million employees at more than 7,000 organizations in the past year.
The program aims to offer data to engage employees, showcase standout culture, and attract and maintain top talent.
Last year, cleveland.com featured a record 175 nonprofits, firms, schools, and other organizations from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, and Wayne counties.
The workplaces clearly value their employees, with perks, flexibility, and ownership.
Before the pandemic, Anderson-DeBose Co. threw a prom-like banquet at a country club for employees and their guests -- and even covered overnight hotel stays. Marcus Thomas offers flexible work schedules and whatever vacation time employees want to take. And the Garland Co. gives employees stock options, plus lunch with the company president each year.
How it works:
Any public, private, non-profit, government organization with 35 or more employees in Northeast Ohio is eligible to participate.
Workplaces are evaluated by their employees using a short 24-question survey. Companies will be surveyed from November through February.
To nominate an employer, go to cleveland.com/nominate or call 216-373-0585. The deadline is Dec. 11, 2020. Once a business is nominated, the employers themselves decide whether to participate.
The top employers in small, mid-size, and large categories will be recognized in a special section in the Plain Dealer and on cleveland.com. Winners will also be celebrated in special areas.
Last year’s Top Workplaces:
Last year, Progressive and Quicken Loans took top honors for the large and mid-size categories.
“While we appreciate the recognition, we are most proud of the fact that this accolade is based entirely on our team members' feedback,” says Matt Stoffer, Quicken Loans executive vice president of mortgage banking. “Quicken Loans has a laser focus on creating an inclusive environment that is a great place to work for all our team members, and that has been more important than ever during this unique year.”
