PHOENIX – Visitors to the Grand Canyon and other national parks will get five days of free admission in 2022.
The National Park Service said earlier this week entrance fees will be waived at about 110 parks. Admission ranges from $5 to $35.
The majority of the more than 400 parks do not charge for entry, the park system said.
Dates for free admission are Jan. 17, MLK Jr. Day; April 16, the start of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act; Sept. 24, National Public Lands Day; and Nov. 11, Veterans Day.
Visitors will still have to pay user fees for amenities and activities that include camping, boating and transportation or special tours.
“National parks are for everyone and we are committed to increasing access and providing opportunities for all to experience the sense of wonder, awe and refreshment that comes with a visit to these treasured landscapes and sites,” park service Director Chuck Sams said in a press release Tuesday.
Entrance fees contributed $170 million to park service funding in 2020. The money is used to fund visitor-experience programs and services, restore habitats, maintenance and repair.
