As the state’s population grows, and COVID lingers, our national parks and state parks have never been more popular. But overcrowding has become an issue, especially at one of the most popular national parks in the country: Rocky Mountain National Park. This year the park service will once again institute a time-entry system for park entry beginning May 27, the weekend before the Memorial Day weekend, through Oct. 10.
The wait to get into Rocky Mountain National Park at the Beaver Meadows gate ran up to an hour on the first day of required time-entry reservations last year. Many visitors, not realizing the reservation system was in place, were turned away because they lacked entrance reservations. The hope is that this year the reservation system will work more smoothly.
The temporary timed-entry permit reservation system was first implemented at Rocky Mountain National Park in 2021 to reduce crowding and congestion. At the time, the reservation system was set up to fill 75 to 85 percent of parking lot capacity.
This year park officials announced they are making more permits available per two-hour entry window than last year, taking reservations for 90 percent of the parking capacity.
The summer reservation system will open at 10:00 a.m. MST May 2, 2022: Reservations to enter the park will go on sale through www.recreation.gov.
