The Slovakian Ministry of the Interior has announced that all Ukrainians fleeing the war will be permitted to enter the country, including those who do not have a valid travel document.

After an individual assessment, we will also allow entry to the territory of the Slovak Republic to persons who do not have a valid travel document (biometric passport),” the Ministry noted in a press release issued on Friday, February 25, regarding the situation at the Slovakian-Ukrainian border.

According to the same press release, the Slovakian police is ensuring a normal functioning at the border crossing with Ukraine, all of which are in operation – except for the railway border crossing Čierna nad Tisou – Čop.

The Ministry also claims that there are no long lines or waiting times at these borders since men aged 18-60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine.

The same, however, notes that if there’s an influx of people reaching the country from Ukraine, the border authorities are ready to strengthen the controls and services. The Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic and the members of the Police Force are also ready to help in this regard.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Interior revealed that 10,526 entries were made only in the last 24 hours, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

During a meeting held on February 25, the government of Slovakia has also approved changes in the laws on civil protection, asylum and cyber security in order to be prepared for mass migration into the country.

Through the amendments made to the Civil Protection Act, the government will be able to implement economic mobilization measures to ensure the accommodation of incoming refugees, organize the transport they need and offer them medical security.

Whereas through the changes imposed to the Asylum Act, the Slovak authorities will be able to declare the provision of temporary refuge to foreigners without the need for a recommendation by the EU Council.

Temporary refuge is provided for the purpose of protecting aliens from war, the consequences of a humanitarian catastrophe or a systematic or mass human rights violation in the country of which the alien is a national, or for a stateless person in his or her country of residence,” the Ministry of Interior explains regarding the changes.

The law will not oblige Ukrainians seeking temporary refuge who have secured accommodation to go to a detention camp.

The rest of Ukraine’s neighbouring countries have also confirmed they have made preparations to take in Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, including here Poland, which confirmed that those who do not hold valid travel documents will be able to enter this country either.

Czechia, on the other hand, has activated the Migration Wave Preparedness Plan in order to help Ukrainians who are leaving their home country. The plan will help them apply for a special type of visa through a simplified procedure in order to remain in Czechia as needed.
