Courthouse entry points discussed at Marquette County Board meeting - Marquette Mining Journal

MARQUETTE — The big topic during Tuesday’s Marquette County Board meeting was the decision to open up another point of entry to the Marquette County Courthouse. Currently, there is one entry across from the jail. The second entry would be located along Baraga Avenue by the clerk’s office.

“The clerk’s office is probably the busiest in the whole county, and then treasurer’s office and the register of deeds, so this would make it a lot more convenient for the general public to get to those offices to have two points of entry to the building,” Chairperson Gerry Corkin said.

Commissioner Bill Nordeen was not opposed to the idea, but laid out some problems that needed to be considered. The problems included handicap-accessibility issues and safety issues. While there are two police officers that roam the building for security purposes, would they then be the ones at the entries providing security? If so, there would be no one to walk the building or to provide assistance if needed in the courtroom.

A solution, County Administrator Scott Erbisch said, would be to put alarms on the doors. Another would be to be able to lock the doors for individuals entering the building, but still be able to let people out if security could not be at the door.

Nordeen did mention that the building itself is confusing and can be difficult to navigate; two points of entry could cut down on confusion so citizens aren’t strolling around the entire building looking for their destination.

Ultimately, the board passed the motion to open the second entry.

“I don’t want a false sense of security saying because we have these two secure entrances that the courthouse is a safe place, because it can’t be unless you have total control of the doors and the people coming in,” Sheriff Greg Zyburt said.

He said he would work with Erbisch to figure out the logistics of the decision.

The board also passed a motion to sell Sawyer Building 627 to Able Medical for $592,000. Able has been operating out of the building for many years. It will also lease 8.2 acres surrounding the building with an annual land lease at $1,200 per acre.

With this sale, Able has guaranteed maintaining at least 50 jobs at K.I. Sawyer. The county is to enter into a separate economic development grant agreement to provide $200,000 upon closing in recognition of Able’s future expansion. This sale is contingent on final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We’re getting to the point where we don’t have many empty buildings out at K.I. Sawyer, if you can believe it,” Corkin said.

In addition, a motion was passed to appoint Kathy Busby to the Airport Advisory Board with her term ending in December 2023.

Commissioner Joe Derocha was absent from the meeting.
