Kylie Jenner apparently stripped of billionaire status - The Independent Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:49 AM PDT Kylie Jenner apparently stripped of billionaire status - The Independent - Advertisement - Reality star Kylie Jenner was stripped of her billionaire title by Forbes and she took to Twitter to complain about it. The magazine alleged that the beauty mogul forged her tax returns and bluffed about Kylie Cosmetics' annual income. Nobody ever thought a Kardashian-Jenner member would be waging war with a magazine. However, Kylie is now ranting on social media after the magazine did a long article that claimed that she inflated her personal wealth, forged her tax returns and projected her cosmetics brand to rake in more that it does. According to Forbes, Kylie Cosmetics is "significantly smaller and less profitable than the family has spent years leading the cosmetics industry and media outlets to believe." This is based on looking at the documents from Coty, a conglomerate that purchased 51 per cent of the cosmetics brands in November last year. The magazine also projected that the reality star's net worth is just under USD$900 million. With that new net worth, Kylie is no longer world's youngest billionaire. Since discovering the news, Kylie went on Twitter to speak her mind. She asked what she was waking up to and she questioned how reputable Forbes is. Kylie said that there were inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions. The beauty mogul goes on to say that she never asked for any title or tried to bluff her way there. Kylie then asked the magazine's credibility when they say the tax returns were forged. - Advertisement - Kylie's last tweet then said that it was okay as she is blessed beyond her years, she has a beautiful daughter with a successful business and she is doing fine. Netizens called Kylie out for being worried about an article than other pressing matters. For example, the current COVID-19 crisis or the death of George Floyd and Minnesota protests. A netizen asked Kylie if the article is the thing that Kylie is worried right now to which she replied that it is the last thing she is worried about right now. The mother of one said that she can name a list of 100 things more important right now than the amount of money she has. /TISG - Advertisement - 2020-05-31 23:10:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiUGh0dHA6Ly90aGVpbmRlcGVuZGVudC5zZy9reWxpZS1qZW5uZXItYXBwYXJlbnRseS1zdHJpcHBlZC1vZi1iaWxsaW9uYWlyZS1zdGF0dXMv0gEA?oc=5 |

Kate Middleton and Prince William reconciled after hearing a song at a party - The Independent Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:49 AM PDT Kate Middleton and Prince William reconciled after hearing a song at a party - The Independent - Advertisement - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may seem like they have the perfect fairytale marriage with three kids but it was not always like this. The royal couple had an on and off relationship before getting hitched. Prince William and Kate Middleton first met at St. Andrews University where they started going out in the early 2000s. In 2004, the couple called it quits and there were different reasons that explained why they broke up. Jessica Jayne who wrote the book The Duchess of Cambridge: How Kate Middleton Became A Future Queen said that the couple split because William felt claustrophobic in the relationship. Duncan Larcombe, ex-editor of Sun said that William and Kate separated for a different reason. He wrote in the book William & Kate: The Journey that Kate's mother, Carole was an air hostess and that did impress William's inner circle. The author said that because of Carole's job, people would call Kate "doors to manual", and asked William to leave Kate. In 2007, the couple reconciled but broke up again. The split was for a short time and it made them discover how much they loved each other. Kate and William were spotted smiling and enjoying the single life after their 2007 breakup. There was news that the Duke of Cambridge wanted to woo Kate back. Royal expert Katie Nicholl said that the duo secretly met up at Clarence House and at a bar near Highgrove where the prince told Kate that he wanted to reconcile. Kate did not want to rush into anything as she was hurt so she told the prince that she needed some time. In June, the couple was said to have reunited at a costume party and were working things out. - Advertisement - In July, Kate and William were seen at a party and their favourite song, 'I Like The Way (You Move)' by Bodyrockers were played. That was when they very likely got back together. Daily Mail reported that the couple hit the dance floor and then headed off to a corner where they drank cocktails, kissed and whispered into each other's ears. Since then, they did not separate anymore and in 2010, William proposed to Kate. A post-engagement interview revealed about the couple's time apart. William shared that they were both very young and were discovering themselves with different characters. They were finding their own way and were growing up. Kate added that even though she was not happy at that time, it made her a stronger person. The royal couple got married on 29 April 2011. They then welcomed Prince George two years later, followed by Princess Charlotte in 2015 and Prince Louis in 2018. /TISG - Advertisement - 2020-06-01 01:20:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiZmh0dHA6Ly90aGVpbmRlcGVuZGVudC5zZy9rYXRlLW1pZGRsZXRvbi1hbmQtcHJpbmNlLXdpbGxpYW0tcmVjb25jaWxlZC1hZnRlci1oZWFyaW5nLWEtc29uZy1hdC1hLXBhcnR5L9IBAA?oc=5 |
ISL: Clubs in favour of four foreigners rule in the playing eleven from 2021-22 - Goal Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:42 AM PDT Indian Super League (ISL) clubs have agreed to reduce the number of foreigners in their squad from the 2021-22 season, Goal can confirm. The Technical Committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had recommended that the ISL and I-League should follow the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) guidelines and adhere to the 3+1 foreigner's rule from the 2021-22 season. The rule will see teams being allowed to field just four foreigners on the field, with one of them required to be from an AFC-affiliated nation. The decision was subsequently ratified by the AIFF Executive Committee, with I-League set to implement the change from the upcoming season itself while ISL was given an exemption for the 2020-21 season. During the meeting, ISL organisers Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) had principally agreed to the suggestion but sought time of about a month to discuss the issue internally before confirming. AIFF President Praful Patel had asked ISL to come up with a plan to implement the rule mandatorily from the 2021-22 season. ISL had sent a letter to all the clubs, asking for their opinion on the matter subsequently. Goal understands that most of the clubs in ISL have concurred with the recommendation of fielding a maximum of four overseas players at any given point of time on the pitch. But there are still some differences in opinion on the number of maximum foreigners that could be registered in the squad. While some want the teams to register five foreign players, a few want the number to be increased to seven. There have been suggestions on not making it mandatory for the Asian foreigner to be in the playing XI as well. It must be noted that all I-League clubs, barring two, had to the proposal and are ready to implement the same from the 2020-21 season itself. While one of those clubs wanted four foreigners in the squad without any Asian player, another club suggested that they should be allowed to sign five foreigners which would include an Asian player. Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:08 AM PDT Issued on: Modified: Protesters took the streets in a number of cities, including London and Copenhagen, while footballers in Germany displayed their solidarity with anti-racism demonstrations in the US over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in Minneapolis after a white police officer pressed his knee on his neck. Advertising Thousands gathered in London on Sunday in a display of solidarity and support for US anti-racism demonstrators. The protesters knelt in central London's Trafalgar Square chanting, "No justice! No peace!" and waving placards with the words "How many more?". Police didn't stop them. Ignoring the UK government's rules banning crowds due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they marched past the Houses of Parliament before arriving outside the US Embassy, where a long line of police officers surrounded the building. Several hundred milled around in the street and waved placards. The Metropolitan police said they made five arrests outside the US Embassy, three for violations of the coronavirus lockdown guidelines and two for assault on police. 'Stop killing black people' Protesters in Denmark also converged on the US Embassy on Sunday. Participants carried placards with messages such as "Stop Killing Black People". Protests broke out for a second day in a row in the German capital when several hundred more people took to the streets in the Kreuzberg area, carrying signs with slogans like "Silence is Violence," "Hold Cops Accountable," and "Who Do You Call When Police Murder?" No incidents were reported. The US Embassy in Berlin was the scene of protests on Saturday under the motto: "Justice for George Floyd." Germany's top-selling Bild newspaper on Sunday carried the sensational headline "This killer-cop set America ablaze" with an arrow pointing to a photo of now-fired police officer Derek Chauvin, who has been charged with third-degree murder in Floyd's death, with his knee on Floyd's neck. The newspaper's story reported "scenes like out of a civil war." Thuram takes a knee Footballer Jadon Sancho joined symbolic demonstrations of protests across German pitches on Sunday by lifting his jersey after scoring to reveal a T-shirt with the handwritten message "Justice for George Floyd" on the front. Sancho was shown a yellow card for his gesture which came after he scored the second goal for Borussia Dortmund against Paderborn on Sunday. Earlier, Marcus Thuram took a knee after scoring in Borussia Mönchengladbach's win over Union Berlin. The Gladbach forward scored in the first half and then dropped his left knee to the ground and rested his right arm on his right thigh as he bowed his head in reflection. He spent five seconds in this position before getting up again to continue. "No explanation needed," Gladbach said on Twitter with a picture of Thuram kneeling. It evoked memories of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the American national anthem before games to protest police brutality and racial inequality amid the Black Lives Matter movement. The 22-year-old Thuram, who also scored Gladbach's third goal, made no comment on his gesture after the game. "He got to the point," Gladbach coach Marco Rose said. "He made a sign against racism, one we all completely support of course. I believe that everyone fully supports it, that everyone has the same thoughts he does." Thuram is the son of French World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, an outspoken anti-racism campaigner. The Man at the Center of That Viral Exchange on I-277 - Charlotte magazine Posted: 31 May 2020 11:47 PM PDT During protest, Curtis Hayes Jr. took command of a passionate exchange among three generations of Black menEarly Saturday afternoon, a demonstration that began in uptown moved onto Interstate 277. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police eventually guided protesters off the overpass without serious incident. But before then, near the Fourth Street exit, two Black men had a heated discussion. The older of the two, who's 45, yelled about how tired he was of injustice against Black people. He said he was ready to die to stop it. "I understand!' the younger man, who's 31, replied, repeatedly. Then he pulled a third Black male into the conversation, a 16-year-old. The 31-year-old man delivered a message to the teenager about the frustration of generations, the sense—hammered home by a Minneapolis police officer's killing of a Black man Monday—that years pass, names and institutions differ, but nothing truly changes, and that younger people will have to "come up with a better way." "'Cause how we're doing it? It ain't working! Come up with a better way. 'Cause we ain't doing it!" The 31-year-old's name is Curtis M. Hayes Jr., and the video of the three-person, three-generation encounter, shot by an unidentified observer, was tweeted by a woman in Houston. By late Sunday afternoon, it had earned more than 123,000 likes and more than 57,000 retweets, including one from The New Yorker staff writer and Say Nothing author Patrick Radden Keefe, who wrote: "This exchange, these awful truths. Three Black men, three different generations. It's two minutes long and every American should watch and listen." Logan Cyrus, a Charlotte photographer who was shooting photos of the protest for Charlotte magazine, also captured a photo of Hayes and the 16-year-old, who commented on the magazine's Instagram post. During the 2016 Keith Lamont Scott protests, Hayes, as he did Saturday, acted as a buffer between protesters and police. He's a West Virginia native who lives in Charlotte and owns a property maintenance company; he and I spoke for about 20 minutes Sunday about what led to the passionate conversation on 277 and the thinking that informs his activism. Hayes' words have been edited for concision and clarity. CM: How did that conversation come about? Hayes: What led up to it was, you had two officers who were stuck in the middle of the protests, and myself, I was out there protesting and trying to make sure that peace was kept on both ends and that neither party from either side was hurt. And I looked over, and I saw a young man, and I asked him, "How old are you?" And he said, "I'm 16." And then I look behind me and I see this older guy who is just, you know, angry and upset, and he's a little irate because he's been dealing with it for years. And then you have myself, who's 31, who's right in the middle of both of them, and I look at my elder and I see that he is angry. I look at the young brother who is under me, and I see that he is angry. And it just created that moment that was needed, that dialogue that was needed between every generation to talk, and for everybody to see it together so that they can understand: How many years and how many generations do we have to put up with this? How many individuals will continue to be angry and hurt behind the injustice that happens in America? CM: What did you feel compelled to say specifically to the older man? Hayes: We have to set a better example. He's my elder, and I have a mother and a father who are close to his age. And, again, I understand that he is angry. But the message that I wanted to get to him was, us in conflict with each other, or feeling like one of our brothers is betraying us because they're trying to keep the peace, that is not what's happening. And as an elder, I need you to lead our community to where it needs to be led. And I need you to be an example for not only myself as a 31-year-old Black man but for this 16-year-old Black man who is behind us, and he's watching our actions, and he's watching how we take movements in this—he's watching us—so that we know that we are instilling a movement in him that he will go with his generation, and they will move strong and fierce, and they will move peacefully, but they will move with a purpose so that people understand them. And the way we were moving was not the way. We had a guy, Big Mike, who was shielding people from possibly—and I'm not saying that it was going to happen, because I don't believe it was—but I think that there were some angry people who got caught right there in the midst of the protests. But we use ourselves as human shields to protect the other side while protecting ourselves because we understand that in those feet where we stand across from each other, that we are all human. And one reaction will cause more and multiple reactions that we do not need. So, again, he kinda got upset with a brother that was in front of the police because they feel as though we're taking sides, and I need everybody to understand there's not a fight to take, but only one side, and that is to fight for equality of people everywhere in the world. I think people think that it was something against them. It's not even against CMPD. The movement and the message is much bigger than that. CM: You said "we." Are you affiliated with any particular activist group? Hayes: No. I'm out there as a concerned citizen, as a concerned father, a concerned uncle, cousin, nephew, son, that's what I'm out there as. CM: You said something during a television interview Saturday, referring to Greg Jackson of HEAL Charlotte and the work he's been doing with CMPD and his community to try to prevent crime and violence between police and citizens: "They are taking more of us than we are saving." What did you mean? Do you think incidents like the police killing of George Floyd strip away what progress police and citizens in Charlotte have made in the past few years? Hayes: I don't want to discredit or take away anything that has been done right. So when you give that answer that I think that it was all stripped away, that would be me discrediting so many of us before us who have fought this fight. I don't think that it was all stripped away. What I think we are facing is a repetitive situation where action is taken—but not enough to sustain it. Does that make sense? It's not to discredit anybody before me or anybody after me. It's the simple fact that everybody should understand that action has been taken, right? Little changes have occurred, awareness has occurred. But the action that was taken to get that little bit of ground is never enough, constantly or repetitively, to sustain the change. We always resort back to what we know, where we don't insert into people's minds that change needs to happen all the time and not only periods of time when tragedy strikes. CM: Where do we go from here? Hayes: Everybody who I've come in contact with who's on a platform who asks that question to me, I challenge them to ask the question back to themselves and say, "What can I do as an individual to just take a little bit of that work that (activists) put in—how can I use it on my platform? Who can I ask that question to who is blind to the fact of the issues and the injustice that's going on in the world?" Because you talk to people who don't see things how you see things. And I'm not going to connect with them better than you will connect with them. That's just the world that we live in. So I think that a lot of us need to really understand that. My message is for a lot of people, and I pray that it reaches everyone, right? But at the end of the day, the message that I really want to resonate in people's hearts is, what can you do as a Black man, white man, Asian man, Hispanic, Latino, it doesn't matter: What can you do in your community? So I challenge my white counterparts who I don't know, who I do know, who I know and who I love dearly. I have friends who I give the same message to, because it starts in our communities as Black people, but it also starts with change in the white community. That's what we've been missing for so many years, is that our counterparts do not have enough people who support the movement for not just Black Lives Matter, but everyone, because if everyone can come together in solidarity and as a unit, then we will move forward so much better as a people. Police shoot pepper balls at Mobile activists as peaceful protest turns violent - AL.com Posted: 31 May 2020 11:44 PM PDT Shots were fired and several people arrested in Mobile Sunday night after a peaceful protest turned violent. Hours after thousands marched through the downtown area in protest at the death of George Floyd, resulting in a brief clash with police at the entrance to Interstate 10, a small group of around 100 people made its way to the old Babies R Us store on Airport Boulevard. The protests in Mobile mirror many of those going on in Alabama and across the country, resulting in mass vandalism, violence and clashes with local law enforcement. Protests in Birmingham appeared to turn violent quickly as protesters targeted Confederate monuments. The small Mobile group, which set up in the parking lot, started out by singing, dancing and chanting while five police officers watched on from a grassy verge off the I-65 service road. As protesters accidentally spilled on to the service road, law enforcement was forced to divert the busy Sunday evening traffic. A senior MPD officer assembled organizers and asked them to stay off the road. Some did not. As the crowds grew, so did the presence and look of the MPD officers nearby. The group of five officers quickly multiplied to 20 and were all wearing riot gear. A SWAT van arrived, as did several additional police vehicles. The protest remained peaceful until one man was grabbed by several advancing police officers. The black man was forced to his knees, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police van. It appeared he was arrested for walking on the road. Until that point he had been begging with people to stay in the parking lot. Questions from AL.com about why the man had been arrested went unanswered. Not long after the arrest, an officer holding a can of pepper spray joined the group standing on the grassy verge. Around the same time a white photographer was taken aside by police for walking on the road. He was not arrested. Protesters at the back of the main group began throwing water bottles at officers. Some of the officers advanced to the middle of the parking lot and were quickly surrounded by at least 100 people. After blasting pepper spray from a can at those around them, the officers then retreated. More water bottles were thrown, at which point the senior officer immediately declared the protest over. "How would you like it if I threw water bottles at you?" said the officer to a protester as he walked toward the group in the parking lot. As officers advanced on the crowd, one MPD officer began shooting pepper balls from what looked like a paint ball gun. All the officers moved into the parking lot and ordered people to leave, threatening them with arrest and having their cars towed. It took a further 30 minutes to clear the vehicles and crowds. Most moved to an adjacent parking lot. No businesses were vandalized and no known injuries were reported to police. Trump briefly taken to underground bunker during Friday's White House protests - CNN Posted: 31 May 2020 10:08 PM PDT The President was there for a little under an hour before being brought upstairs. A law enforcement source and another source familiar with the matter tell CNN that first lady Melania Trump and their son, Barron, were also taken to the bunker. The law enforcement source familiar with protocol said that if authorities moved Trump, they would move all protectees, meaning Melania and Barron. The second source told CNN that "if the condition at the White House is elevated to RED and the President is moved" to the Emergency Operations Center "Melania Trump, Barron Trump and any other first family members would be moved as well." Late Sunday night, the White House cautioned staffers who must go to work on Monday to hide their passes until they reach a Secret Service entry point and to hide them as they leave, according to an email which was viewed by CNN. The email repeated mandates for maximum telework status and said there is still an "elevated security posture" due to the protests. Trump praised the Secret Service the next day for its handling of the protests outside the White House Friday night in the wake of George Floyd's death last week in Minneapolis. The New York Times first reported Trump was taken to the presidential bunker. On Saturday, only hours after the protests outside the White House had ended, Trump declared himself safe as he lashed out at the city's Democratic mayor and raised the prospect of his supporters gathering in place that night in what would amount to a counter protest. In a series of tweets, Trump commended the US Secret Service for protecting him inside his fortified mansion Friday evening, saying he couldn't have felt "more safe" as protesters gathered outside over Floyd's death. The President suggested that dogs and weaponry were waiting inside the gates. Trump claimed DC Mayor Muriel Bowser did not permit the DC police to "get involved," though Secret Service later said they were on the scene. Later in the day, speaking at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida after the launch of the NASA/SpaceX rocket, Trump admonished protesters across the country, expressed support for the "majority of police officers" and blamed Antifa and the "radical left" -- without any proof -- in his most in-depth remarks since Floyd's death and the ensuing nationwide demonstrations. "I stand before you as a friend and ally to every American seeking justice and peace. And I stand before you in firm opposition to anyone exploiting this tragedy to loot, rob, attack and menace. Healing, not hatred, justice, not chaos, are the mission at hand," Trump said. Trump added that the voice of "law abiding citizens must be heard and heard very loudly." "We must defend the rights of every citizen to live without violence, prejudice or fear," Trump said before supporting "the overwhelming majority of police officers who are incredible in every way and devoted public servants." "No one is more upset than fellow law enforcement officers by the small handful who failed to abide by their oath to serve and protect," Trump added. In his Saturday morning Twitter messages, Trump did not seek to lower the temperature or console Americans who find themselves facing parallel health and racial crises. The decision to physically move the President came as protesters confronted Secret Service officers outside the White House for hours on Friday -- shouting, throwing water bottles and other objects at the line of officers, and attempting to break through the metal barriers. At times, the crowd would remove the metal barriers and begin pushing up against the officers and their riot shields. The Secret Service continually replaced the barriers throughout the night as protesters wrestled them away. Protesters pushed hard enough a few times that officers had to walk away with what appeared to be minor injuries. At one point, the agents responded to aggressive pushing and yelling by using pepper spray on the protesters. Throughout the night, protesters could be heard chanting their support for Floyd, an unarmed black man who died after being pinned down by a white police officer, and their dislike of Trump. The protest, which began around 10 p.m. ET, Friday night outside the White House, had mostly quieted down by 3:30 a.m. ET, Saturday morning. The crowd thinned out and Secret Service officers were able to expand their perimeter and barriers around Lafayette Park across from the White House. Six arrests were made during the protests, the Secret Service confirmed in a statement Saturday afternoon. The President on Thursday had used the threat of police retaliation and military intervention in Minnesota where protests turned violent and destructive -- saying on Twitter that "when the looting starts, the shooting starts." Trump's weekend tweets also invoked imagery tied to brutal civil rights-era police tactics. Now, a serious divide has emerged among the President's top allies and advisers over how the President should address several nights of protests and riots. Trump is being urged by some advisers to formally address the nation and call for calm, while others have said he should condemn the rioting and looting more forcefully or risk losing middle-of-the-road voters in November, according to several sources familiar with the deliberations. This story has been updated with new reporting about White House staffers being advised to hide their passes coming into and leaving work. Posted: 31 May 2020 09:08 PM PDT WATCH: Video Shows How Truck Progressed Through Crowd On I-35W At 10 p.m., WCCO confirmed with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office that the suspect was Bogdan Vechirko, of Otsego. He is currently being held custody on probable cause assault. DPS Commissioner John Harrington says it appears that no protesters on the southbound lanes of the interstate were seriously hurt. He estimates that 5,000 to 6,000 people were on the bridge at the time the truck sped through. Harrington says the truck was already on the interstate before the incident, even though it had closed about 40 minutes earlier at 5 p.m. and barriers were in place specifically for the marchers.
"It was one of the most dangerous things I've ever seen," Harrington said. The driver, who was pulled out of the truck and attacked by protesters, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Hennepin Healthcare, and is now in the Hennepin County Jail. In several videos of the incident, protesters can be heard and seen trying to stop the attack, and several laid on him to protect him. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said that no one was called out for a water rescue in the incident. The truck had a Kenan Advantage Group logo on it. The Ohio-based company gave this statement late Sunday evening, which read in part, "Our hearts go out to all those who are grieving the events of this past week. We have been informed of an incident involving one of our independent contractors in Minneapolis, MN during recent protests. Our first and foremost concern is for the safety and security of the public, our employees and our customers."
Police arrived soon after, and began to use chemical spray on protesters, including those who were trying to help the man to the squad car. Gov. Tim Walz later announced at a press conference about 90 minutes later that the police quickly moved onto the bridge and cleared the crowds due to the threat of a possible gas or chemical leak from the tanker. The police response led to pandemonium on the bridge, with thousands quickly scattering away to the nearest off-ramp.
The DPS announced about three hours after the incident that the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are jointly investigating this as a criminal matter. Those Minneapolis marchers were part of a "No Bail" march, which began at the U.S. Bank Stadium. At about 4 p.m., the group started to march through the streets of downtown Minneapolis. Their march moved from the stadium over to Hennepin Avenue Bridge, then over to Interstate 35W by about 5:30 p.m., where thousands took a knee and a moment of silence — just a couple minutes before the tanker arrived. The incident happened nearly 13 years after 13 people died and 143 were injured when the original Interstate 35W Bridge collapsed. Meanwhile, a Justice for George Floyd march began with a rally at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. Midway throughout the afternoon, the march started moving and ultimately made their way onto Interstate 94, where they started marching west.
WCCO's David Schuman says that, in relation to the concerns about protests flaring up the spread of COVID-19 in the state and across the country, he observed at least three-quarters of protesters wearing face masks. Gov. Tim Walz, on Sunday, extended the curfew order, which again goes into effect at 8 p.m. in both cities, along with many other suburbs in the surrounding area. Also, Metro Transit said they were going to continue suspension of all service on buses, LRT and commuter rail through at least Monday, June 1. And many Minneapolis-area highways will once again close through 6 a.m. Monday. 27 of the most uplifting and positive moments from the US protests - indy100 Posted: 31 May 2020 09:08 PM PDT The protests that the United States is currently witnessing in response to the death of George Floyd have produced some of the most shocking scenes the country has witnessed for years. Buildings and vehicles have been set on fire, clashes have been documented outside of the White House and Trump tower while footage has shown police using aggressive tactics against protesters, even those in there own homes. In situations like this, it can be too easy to concentrate on the negatives and ignore some of the more positive moments of the demonstrations. So for some levity here are some of the more uplifting moments from the events of the past few days. There has been a lot of dancing and singing. The chant 'I can't breathe,' which Floyd said before he died, has become the slogan of the protests. Some police and officials have shown solidarity with the protestors, by holding signs and taking part in marches. Some protestors have also been bravery telling others to stop vandalising property showing that they are not all 'thugs' like some would have you believe.Other protests have also been seen around the world.Meanwhile, there have been some unusual characters showing up at protests including Batman, members of the Amish community and a woman looting a cheesecake (we can't condone looting but might make an exception for this). This incredible piece of resolve between three generations of black men has quickly become one of the most raw and powerful moments of the protests. Derek Chauvin, the police officer who was filmed with his knee on the back of George Floyd's head has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. Floyd's bother has since said that he wants the charge to be upgraded to first-degree murder. Posted: 31 May 2020 09:08 PM PDT Black lives matter on the streets. Black lives matter on the Internet. EFF stands with the communities mourning the victims of police homicide. We stand with the protesters who are plowed down by patrol cars. We stand with the journalists placed in handcuffs or fired upon while reporting these atrocities. And we stand with all those using their cameras, phones and digital tools to make sure we cannot turn away from the truth. There is no doubt that we are in deeply troubled times. From lockdown in our homes, many of us are watching with heart-stopping horror as the cellphone footage of extreme police violence washes down our feeds. Others feel compelled to join the protests in person and to bear witness and document it for the rest of us over the digital networks that connect us all. The president is sowing chaos through incendiary, authoritarian orders and pressure toward more violence, sometimes through official channels, more often on Twitter. The build-up of even more sophisticated mass and targeted surveillance tools in the hands of American law enforcement, and the erosion of local control and protections against misuse, have all been normalized over the past two decades. Now the pandemic management technology being pushed by some tech companies and governments over the last few months is primed to be deployed as a massive new surveillance and control apparatus. With all of it, who will feel the brunt of the harm? Black lives. Our hearts are breaking for our Black coworkers, neighbors and friends, who have suffered from this trauma for far too long. While we've seen small rays of hope by a few in government and law enforcement, they are overshadowed by the rest. Overall, we are enraged at the response by the police all over the country to these protests, doubling down on abusive tactics and ramping up tracking of protesters. And we are worried about what's coming: protest movements often bring out the worst in constitutional abuse. We've seen police surveillance tools grow and metastasize, with law enforcement officials specifically targeting the Black-led movement to end racist police violence. To the protesters and reporters on the front lines, we urge you to stay safe, both physically and digitally. Our Surveillance Self-Defense Guide for protesters was designed for these situations. We'll be updating it as we see new tactics and strategies and tools. To our racial justice, economic justice, and environmental justice allies, EFF is here to help whenever you need some hands who understand technology and the law. To the reporters from struggling newsrooms: we are available to answer your questions and we have resources to help you. And to everyone, we pledge to redouble our efforts to beat back police surveillance and abuse, and to build and protect the tools that allow you to organize, assemble, and speak securely and without censorship. INTERNATIONAL - George Floyd death: Lawyer calls it 'premeditated murder' - Antigua Observer Posted: 31 May 2020 08:08 PM PDT Spread the love (BBC) – A lawyer for the family of George Floyd, whose death sparked unrest across the US, has accused a police officer of "premeditated murder". Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder, but lawyer Benjamin Crump told CBS news it was a case of first-degree murder. "We think that he had intent… almost nine minutes he kept his knee in a man's neck that was begging and pleading for breath," he said. Several US cities have imposed curfews. The Floyd case has reignited US anger over police killings of black Americans. It follows the high-profile cases of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner in New York and others that have driven the Black Lives Matter movement. "The fact that officer Chauvin kept his knee on his neck for almost three minutes after he was unconscious. We don't understand how that was not first degree murder. We don't understand how all these officers haven't been arrested," lawyer Crump said. Three other officers present at the time have also since been sacked. For many the outrage over George Floyd's death also reflects years of frustration over socioeconomic inequality and segregation, not least in Minneapolis itself. In video footage, Mr Chauvin, 44, can be seen kneeling on Mr Floyd's neck for several minutes on Monday. Mr Floyd, 46, repeatedly says that he is unable to breathe. There have been five nights of arson and looting in Minneapolis and the adjacent city of St Paul. Minnesota's Governor Tim Walz said on Saturday he was deploying the full Minnesota National Guard for the first time since World War Two. Governor Walz said racism in his state had created the conditions for Mr Floyd's death. The National Guard – the US reserve military force for domestic emergencies – said on Sunday that 5,000 of its personnel had been activated in 15 states and Washington DC. It added that "state and local law enforcement agencies remain responsible for security". In the CBS interview, lawyer Benjamin Crump also said "we now have the audio from the police bodycam and we hear where one officer says 'he doesn't have a pulse, maybe we should turn him on his side', but yet officer Chauvin says 'no, we're going to keep him in this position'. That's intent. "Also, the fact that officer Chauvin kept his knee on his neck for almost three minutes after he was unconscious." The lawyer also said Mr Chauvin and Mr Floyd already knew each other before Mr Floyd's death in custody. He said the Floyd family was "notified by the owner of a club that Derek Chauvin was an off-duty police officer where George Floyd was a security guard, and so they had to overlap". What's the latest on the protests?Huge demonstrations have taken place in at least 30 cities across the US. They were largely peaceful on Saturday, but violence flared later in the day. One of the cities worst affected by unrest is Los Angeles. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the city and activated the National Guard. The entire city is under a 20:00 to 05:30 curfew. Numerous shops have been looted, including on the famous retail avenues, Melrose and Fairfax, while overhead footage showed fires burning. Earlier police fired rubber bullets and hit protesters with batons. Hundreds of arrests have been made. In New York City, police arrested about 350 people overnight and dozens of police suffered light injuries. In Salt Lake City, a man aimed a bow and arrow at protesters and was attacked by the crowd, Reuters reported. President Donald Trump's national security adviser told CNN "I don't think there's systemic racism" in the police. Robert O'Brien said "there are some racist police, I think they're the minority, I think they're the few bad apples and we need to root them out". On Saturday evening, President Trump said Mr Floyd's death had "filled Americans with horror, anger and grief". He also denounced the actions of "looters and anarchists", accusing them of dishonouring the memory of Mr Floyd. What was needed, he said, was "healing not hatred, justice not chaos". "I will not allow angry mobs to dominate – won't happen," he added. Thousands took part in an anti-racism protest march in central London on Sunday, defying social distancing rules imposed because of coronavirus. They gathered in Trafalgar Square, then the crowd moved on to the US embassy. LAPD Chief Makes Peace with Protesters, Says George Floyd Was Murdered - TMZ Posted: 31 May 2020 08:08 PM PDT The top dog of the LAPD made progress with protesters in Los Angeles this weekend, getting them to calm down and retreat ... after he admitted George Floyd had been murdered. Here's Chief of Police Michel Moore talking to protesters in the City of Angels this weekend, explaining his and his officers' intentions -- telling the crowd the cops weren't there to harm or arrest anyone ... just to deal with a fire that was raging in the background. He finally gets everyone's attention when one of the more vocal protesters tells everyone behind him that Moore had admitted to him that, in his opinion, George was in fact murdered by Derek Chauvin -- which got cheers of approval from just about everyone there. Moore then comes to a mutual understanding with the protesters ... no bottles or rocks should be thrown, and it's all good. It's pretty remarkable, especially coming from THE face of the department. You would hope his approach to dealing with protesters will trickle down the ranks. Matt M. McKnight / Crosscut.com It's also becoming more and more clear that a lot of cops out there are hearing the frustrations of the protesters and adjusting their behavior in handling them accordingly. We saw one officer yank another officer's knee off a guy's neck. Now, take a look at this.
Unclear where this video was shot, but it appears to show a cop putting his knee UNDER a protester's head while they're being detained -- seemingly to provide support/comfort. That's more like it.
