Bishop at DC church outraged by Trump visit: 'I just can't believe what my eyes have seen' - CNN Posted: 02 Jun 2020 12:08 AM PDT Her pointed comments came after the President walked from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church, a house of worship used by American presidents for more than a century. Peaceful protesters just outside the White House gates were dispersed with tear gas, flash grenades and rubber bullets. It was all, apparently, so Trump could visit the church. "I am outraged. The President did not pray when he came to St. John's, nor as you just articulated, did he acknowledge the agony of our country right now," Budde told CNN's Anderson Cooper on "AC360." "And in particular, that of the people of color in our nation, who wonder if anyone ever -- anyone in public power will ever acknowledge their sacred words. And who are rightfully demanding an end to 400 years of systemic racism and white supremacy in our country. And I just want the world to know, that we in the diocese of Washington, following Jesus and his way of love ... we distance ourselves from the incendiary language of this President. We follow someone who lived a life of nonviolence and sacrificial love." "We align ourselves with those seeking justice for the death of George Floyd and countless others," she continued. "And I just can't believe what my eyes have seen." Trump was surrounded by aides in front of the church, including national security adviser Robert O'Brien, Attorney General Bill Barr, senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, chief of staff Mark Meadows, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. He remained at the boarded-up building for a matter of minutes before returning inside the White House. The exterior of the church had been defaced during protests outside the White House Sunday, and there had been a small fire in the parish house basement but church leaders said in a statement that the structure was largely "untouched." "We have the greatest country in the world," Trump said outside the building. Beyond using the church as a backdrop, Budde criticized Trump's use of a Bible during the visit, which he held up as he posed for cameras. "Let me be clear: The President just used a Bible, the most sacred text of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese, without permission, as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus," she said. The episode follows nearly a week of protests across the country that at times have turned violent over the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man who died at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis. While still at the White House Monday evening, Trump declared himself "your president of law and order," and vowed to return order to American streets using the military if widespread violence isn't quelled. "If a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them," he said. The address came after he had been angered by news coverage depicting him holed up in an underground bunker amid protests in Washington. He told aides on Monday he wanted to be seen outside the White House gates, according to a person familiar with the matter, which is part of what drove the decision to stage the photo-op at St. John's Church. But Budde stressed Monday that his presence in front of the church -- and his response to the nationwide protests -- were both unwelcome. "What I am here to talk about is the abuse of sacred symbols for the people of faith in this country to justify language, rhetoric, an approach to this crisis that is antithetical to everything we stand for." The Episcopal Church has repeatedly refuted Trump on a range of issues including proposed cuts to social services and the construction of a wall on the US southern border. Michael Curry, the presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, said in a statement Monday that Trump had "used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan purposes." "This was done in a time of deep hurt and pain in our country, and his action did nothing to help us or heal us," Curry said. And Greg Brewer, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida, tweeted that he was "shaken watching protestors in Lafayette Park gassed and cleared so that the President of the United States can do a photo op in front of St. John's Episcopal Church holding a Bible." "This is blasphemy in real time," Brewer said on Twitter. This is story has been updated with additional information Monday. 40 days later, Adesh Ravi’s viral song on migrant labourers touches hearts - The New Indian Express Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:47 PM PDT Express News Service HYDERABAD : The hauntingly melodious Telugu single No Home by Adesh Ravi on the plight of migrant workers in the Covid-19 lockdown will move you to tears. Released on April 17 on Ravi's FaceBook page, the lament which features a video with pictures of workers, both old and young, walking on the highways in the scorching heat, and sitting helplessly by the side of roads has gone viral. Right from the first few lines – Pilla jella intikada etla unro, Na musali thalli emi vetti saadutundo, Puta puta chesukoni batiketollam, Puta gadva intha dooram vachinollam – the song strikes the right chord, that of deep anguish. A notable feature of this heart-rending song recorded over three days on Ravi's mobile phone is that it has no music. Ravi, 44, who hails from Ramakrishnapur, Mancherial district, has written and sung the song. Speaking with TNIE, he said, "Pain comes out best in the depth and modulation of the voice, and I did not want to dilute it with music." The other aspect of the song is that it is written in first person. "I wanted the lyrics to be as if a person who is in that situation, walking thousands of kilometers to go home is singing it, so where will they have music," asks he. Ravi, who has worked as a sound engineer in Tollywood for the past 13 years was pained by the plight of the migrant workers walking in thousands just to go back home and be with their families. He says, "I saw the pictures and videos on social media, of people leaving Hyderabad to go to Nirmal and Adilabad on foot as there was no transport. I felt acutely sorry towards these helpless people." He says, "Everyone is only focusing on their own problems – washing hands, staying home, building immunity-- but no one was highlighting the problems these hard working people were facing." He adds, "My aim was to create awareness on the problem of migrant labourers, and I am happy that through my humble effort, NGOs and the public came forward to help them." He adds emphatically, "Poverty is their biggest problem, they do not have time to worry about Coronavirus." Though the song is in Telugu, in the local dialect, Ravi says he has got calls and messages even from people in Bihar and Rajasthan. Feeling touched, he says, "pain has no language barrier." Ravi studied law at Osmania University, and then did a course in sound engineering from ASCI college and says he has grown up with music. With a leaning towards philosophy, he is inspired by Socrates, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Buddha's teaching, and credits them for shaping his "thoughts to write this soulful song." Having been associated with many music directors in Tollywood, Ravi who has a recording studio in the city, says his aim is to direct movies. — tamanna@newindianexpress. com @tamannamehdi "viral" - Google News June 01, 2020 at 10:46AM https://ift.tt/3dkTdLP 40 days later, Adesh Ravi's viral song on migrant labourers touches hearts - The New Indian Express "viral" - Google News https://ift.tt/2BCxygM Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |

Messi's enthusiasm is driving Barcelona squad - Alba - Goal Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:42 PM PDT Lionel Messi's enthusiasm is contagious as La Liga leaders Barcelona prepare to return following the coronavirus pandemic, according to team-mate Jordi Alba. Suspended in March due to the Covid-19 crisis, La Liga will get back underway with a derby clash between Sevilla and Real Betis on June 11. Barca, who were two points clear of bitter rivals Real Madrid through 27 rounds at the time of postponement, will return with a trip to Real Mallorca on June 13. Captain and six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi has provided plenty of motivation ahead of the league's resumption, with left-back Alba telling TVE: "He's a vital player of us and we should enjoy having him all the time. "Seeing Leo with the enthusiasm he's come back with is contagious for the rest of the group." Messi had topped La Liga's goalscoring charts with 19, ahead of Madrid forward Karim Benzema (14). "I see the team as having a lot of enthusiasm," Spain international Alba added. "Mentally and physically we players have come back really well I would say, even better than we were before." Meanwhile, defending champions Barca continue to be linked with former star Neymar – who left Camp Nou for Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record €222 million (£198m/$247m) transfer in 2017. On a possible return, Alba said: "He's clearly a unique player and he gave us a lot. He chose and looked for other goals." Blaugrana coach Quique Setien had admitted he would like to coach Neymar, and is hoping that his side can find a way to bring in their former star, even if it could prove financially difficult amid the coronavirus pandemic. "I'd love to be able to coach him someday as he is a top-class player. To be honest, I've fulfilled a dream in coaching (Lionel) Messi, but I'd be absolutely delighted if Neymar joined us," Setien told beIN SPORTS last month Setien may have to wait at least a year if he is to coach the Brazilian, as Goal has reported that Neymar will not be joining up with his former side this summer due a lack of funds available at Barca. The club is still looking to bring in Inter star Lautaro Martinez, with the Catalans reportedly looking to include multiple players in a swap deal to reduce the Argentine's price. Trump Slams Governors as 'Weak,' Urges Crackdown on Protests - gvwire.com Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT SHARE THIS ARTICLE: WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Monday derided many governors as "weak" and demanded tougher crackdowns on burning and stealing among some demonstrations in the aftermath of another night of violent protests in dozens of American cities. Trump spoke to governors on a video teleconference that also included law enforcement and national security officials, telling the state leaders they "have to get much tougher." "Most of you are weak," Trump said. "You have to arrest people." The days of protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died when a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes. The demonstrations turned violent in several cities, with looting and mayhem, and fires ignited in historic park Lafayette Park across from the White House. Related Story: Trump Took Shelter in White House Bunker as Protests Raged The president urged the governors to deploy the National Guard, which he credited for helping calm the situation Sunday night in Minneapolis. He demanded that similarly tough measures be taken in cities that also experienced a spasm of violence, including New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. "You've got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you'll never see this stuff again," said Trump. "We're doing it in Washington, D.C. We're going to do something that people haven't seen before." The president told the governors they were making themselves "look like fools" for not calling up more of the National Guard as a show for force on city streets. Attorney General Bill Barr, who was also on the call, told governors that a joint terrorist task force would be used to track agitators and urged local officials to "dominate" the streets and control, not react to crowds, and urged them to "go after troublemakers."
Trump Also Spoke of Trying to Criminalize Flag-BurningTrump's angry exhortations at the nation's governors came after a night of escalating violence, images of fires and looting and clashes with police filling the nation's airwaves and overshadowing the largely peaceful protests. The protests grew so heated Friday night that the Secret Service rushed the president to an underground bunker previously used during terrorist attacks. On Monday, Trump also spoke of trying to criminalize flag-burning. The Supreme Court has conservative new members since it last ruled on that issue, and Trump said that "I think it's time to review that again." He continued his effort to project strength, using a series of inflammatory tweets and delivering partisan attacks during a time of national crisis. As cities burned night after night and images of violence dominated television coverage, Trump's advisers discussed the prospect of an Oval Office address in an attempt to ease tensions. The notion was quickly scrapped for lack of policy proposals and the president's own seeming disinterest in delivering a message of unity. Trump did not appear in public on Sunday and was not scheduled to on Monday either. The demonstrations in Washington appeared to catch officers by surprise. They sparked one of the highest alerts at the White House complex since the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. Related Story: Curfews Expire as California Assesses Damage From Unrest Security at the White House Has Been Reinforced by the National GuardSecret Service protocol would call for all those under the agency's protection to be in the underground shelter. Trump has told advisers he worries about his safety, while both privately and publicly praising the work of the Secret Service. Demonstrators returned Sunday afternoon, facing off against police at Lafayette Park into the evening. Trump retweeted a message from a conservative commentator encouraging authorities to respond with greater force. "This isn't going to stop until the good guys are willing to use overwhelming force against the bad guys," Buck Sexton wrote in a message amplified by the president. Related Story: Federal Officer Killed Guarding Courthouse Near Protest In recent days security at the White House has been reinforced by the National Guard and additional personnel from the Secret Service and the U.S. Park Police. The Justice Department deployed members of the U.S. Marshals Service and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration to supplement National Guard troops outside the White House, according to a senior Justice Department official. The official could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity. 13 arrested in Mobile weekend protests - AL.com Posted: 01 Jun 2020 08:44 PM PDT Thirteen people connected to George Floyd protests in Mobile were arrested and charged with civil unrest late Sunday evening and early Monday morning, according to local law enforcement. Mobile Police Department said in a report released later Monday afternoon that a further 26 charges were made against the 13 individuals, including disorderly conduct, burglary, criminal mischief, and arson. Walmart announced that some of its local Mobile stores would close early Monday to avoid potential looting. The arrests came after a mixed day of protest in Mobile and across the state. Earlier on Sunday thousands marched through the downtown area in protest at the death of Floyd, resulting in a brief clash with police at the entrance to Interstate 10 where officers used gas to deter the group from trying to access the road. Not long after, a smaller group of protesters staged a vigil in Cathedral Square that was entirely peaceful. Following the larger of the two events, a small group of around 100 people made its way to the old Babies R Us store on Airport Boulevard. Several arrests were made at the scene and officers were forced to shoot pepper balls from a high-velocity air gun. MPD identified one man as 28-year-old Devon Johnson. "He was ordered by police to get out of the roadway in which he was creating a traffic hazard," said an MPD spokesperson. "He refused to exit the road and was taken into custody, arrested and charged with disorderly conduct." After dispersing the crowd, some moved to different locations on Airport Boulevard and surrounding areas, where the alleged crimes took place, noted MPD's report. Below is a timeline of events from 7 p.m. onward: 7 p.m.: Police responded to a report of a protest at Babies R Us. 10:15 p.m.: Police responded to Lowes off the I-65 Service Road for a criminal mischief call. Shortly after police responded to a report of a fire at the Burlington Coat Factory. 10:22 p.m.: Police responded to a report of a burglary at the Burlington Shoe Factory. 10:35 p.m.: Police made their way to Springdale Mall for a report of an individual with a firearm. Police then responded to The Shoppes at Bel Air on the Dillard's side for a report of an officer injured. 10:55 p.m.: Police responded to Jackie Brown LLC, 100 Esplanade Avenue in reference to a report of a fire. Officers arrived and observed the front glass door was busted and a fire inside the business. Mobile Fire Rescue Department arrived and quickly extinguished the fire. June 1, 3:25 a.m.: Police responded to an attempted burglary at Earl's Pawn and Jewelry. The officer observed damage to the front of the store and a truck that was left running behind the business. The truck had damage consistent with ramming the front of the business. No entry was made, and it appeared the suspect fled on foot when saw police patrolling the area. It was later determined the truck was stolen. Trump took shelter in White House bunker as protests raged - Manistee News Advocate Posted: 01 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Embracing the language of confrontation and war, President Donald Trump on Monday declared himself the "president of law and order" and signaled he would stake his reelection on persuading voters his forceful approach, including deploying U.S. troops to U.S. cities, was warranted in a time of national tumult and racial unrest. Trump made his Rose Garden declaration to the sound of tear gas and rubber bullets clearing peaceful protesters from the park in front of the White House. It created a split screen for the ages, with his critics saying the president was deepening divisions at a time when leadership was crucial to help unify a fractured country. The president's forceful turn to a partisan posture was reminiscent of the us-vs.-them rhetoric he has often used when under pressure, including in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. He has responded to the violence with a string of polarizing tweets, one starkly laying out the political stakes by underscoring the approach of Election Day. "NOVEMBER 3RD," was all it said. Trump vowed to deploy the U.S. military to America's own cities to quell a rise of violent protests, including ransacking stores and burning police cars. He offered little recognition of the anger coursing through the country as he demanded a harsher crackdown on the mayhem that has erupted following the death of George Floyd. Floyd died after a white Minneapolis police officer pinned him down and pressed his neck with his knee as the man pleaded that he couldn't breathe. Violent demonstrations have raged in dozens of cities across the nation, marking a level of widespread turmoil unseen for decades. The political ground beneath Trump has greatly shifted in the spring of this election year. He was supposed to be running on a strong economy, but now he's facing a pandemic, an economic collapse and civil unrest not seen since the 1960s. Indeed, some around the president likened the moment to 1968, when Richard Nixon ran as the law-and-order candidate in the aftermath of a summer of riots and captured the White House. But Trump is the incumbent and, despite his efforts to portray himself as a political outsider, he risks being held responsible for the violence. Trump emerged after two days out of public view in the White House to threaten to deploy "thousands and thousands" of U.S. troops. Then he made a surprise walk through Lafayette Park to a Washington house of worship known as "The Church of the Presidents" that suffered fire damage in the protests. That brought a quick condemnation from Bishop Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde. "The president just used a Bible and one of the churches of my diocese as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus and everything that our church stands for," she said. But he had his campaign moment. In a video teleconference Monday morning, Trump had scolded governors. "Most of you are weak," he said. "It's like a war. And we will end it fast. Be tough." "You have to dominate" and "if you don't dominate you're wasting your time," Trump said, demanding the protests be swiftly crushed, even as some warned that such an aggressive law enforcement response could lead to an escalation of violence. The president urged governors to make more use of the National Guard, which he credited for helping calm the situation Sunday night in Minneapolis. He demanded that similarly tough measures be taken in cities that also experienced spasms of violence, including New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. "You're going to arrest all those people and you're going to try them. And if they get five years or 10 years, they have to get five years or 10 years," the president said. "So I say that, and the winners dominate." Trump's exhortations came after a night of escalating violence, with images of chaos overshadowing largely peaceful protests. The disturbances grew so heated Friday night that the Secret Service rushed the president to an underground White House bunker previously used during terrorist attacks. Some West Wing officials and political advisers have acknowledged that some of the president's tweets have not been helpful, and they have been pushing Trump to acknowledge the pain of the peaceful protesters without lumping them in with the agitators he says are responsible for the violence. But another faction within the administration, including longtime law-and-order proponent Attorney General William Barr, have encouraged Trump's instincts to focus on the group violence. The hope is such a posture can help Trump draw a contrast with Democrats who have been less vocal in their condemnation of the unrest. The West Wing had been mostly empty over the weekend. Many staffers were told to stay home to avoid the protests, chief of staff Mark Meadows was out of town celebrating his daughter's wedding and senior adviser Jared Kushner was marking a Jewish holiday. Among the options being discussed in the White House: a new criminal justice reform package, a task force that would include Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and a listening tour of African American communities, according to people familiar with the discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing had been finalized. Democrats hammered Trump, accusing him of stirring the unrest. "Hate just hides. It doesn't go away, and when you have somebody in power who breathes oxygen into the hate under the rocks, it comes out from under the rocks," said the party's presumptive presidential nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, speaking at a church in Wilmington, Delaware. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump "struggles to summon even an ounce of humanity in this time of turmoil." "The president has reacted to the pain and anger in the country by playing politics and encouraging police to be tougher on protesters by bragging about his reelection prospects and his personal safety inside the White House," Schumer said. Long drawn to displays of strength, Trump and his advisers believe that the combative rhetoric and promises to send the military into cities will reassure voters, including senior citizens and suburban women, concerned by the lawlessness. Eager to change the narrative of the election, just five months away, from a referendum on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Trump and his aides see a cultural war issue that could captivate his base. Ralph Reed, chairman of the Faith & Freedom Coalition and a close ally of the president, said, "In the same way that he became the unlikeliest of champions for evangelicals and the faith community, he has it in him to do the same thing for the minority community." Much as he has with the pandemic, Trump has tried to scapegoat the nation's Democratic governors and mayors, much to their dismay. During the teleconference, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker bluntly told Trump that "the rhetoric that's coming out of the White House is making it worse." ___ Lemire reported from New York. Suderman reported from Richmond, Virginia. Dish adds T-Mobile veteran Mayo to network team - FierceWireless Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:44 PM PDT Dish Network is adding more wireless industry savvy to its ranks, with former T-Mobile executive Dave Mayo joining as EVP, Network Development. Prior to joining Dish, Mayo most recently was senior vice president at T-Mobile USA, where he led T-Mobile's IoT business and founded the company's fixed wireless business. At Dish, Mayo is responsible for Dish's wireless buildout strategy and execution of the company's deployment of a standalone (SA) 5G network. His official start date was June 1 and he reports direct to Dish co-founder and Chairman Charlie Ergen. Mayo's career in wireless dates back to T-Mobile's predecessor, Western Wireless, which was founded by John Stanton and Theresa Gillespie in 1994. That eventually led to VoiceStream Wireless, which was purchased by Deutsche Telekom and renamed T-Mobile USA. During the course of his career, Mayo gained experience in a host of areas: network strategy, planning and implementation, development, financial analysis, operations, strategic transactions, vendor management and most recently, 5G, IoT and fixed wireless. His hire comes after Dish last year added Nokia veteran Marc Rouanne as chief network officer and Stephen Bye as chief commercial officer. RELATED: Meet the T-Mobile executive in charge of fixed wireless Dish also announced several other executive changes. Jeff Blum, who oversees state and federal government relations from the company's Washington, D.C. office, was promoted to EVP, External and Legislative Affairs. Dish said Blum has played an "integral role" in Dish's wireless journey, from spectrum acquisitions and regulatory affairs to his most recent work with the Department of Justice and FCC. That work, as part of the remedy to the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, set up Dish to be a fourth facilities-based carrier, as well as an MVNO agreement with T-Mobile. The remedy also calls for Dish to acquire the Boost Mobile assets from Sprint, a deal that is due to close any day now. (Dish said during its most recent earnings call that it could happen June 1 or get pushed back to July.) In the retail space, John Swieringa, Dish's COO since December 2017, will add to his responsibilities as the new Group President, Retail Wireless. Swieringa will be responsible for Dish's retail wireless business, including strategy, operations and sales, in addition to his duties as COO. He will continue to report to Dish CEO Erik Carlson. RELATED: Dish network build 'for real,' says SBA CEO Dish's ability to build a greenfield 5G network came into question when the COVID-19 crisis took hold and sent financial markets into a tailspin. But Ergen also addressed that question during the earnings call last month, saying the funding part is not the thing that's keeping them up at night. Dish has said it will build its 5G network on a city-by-city basis and it is aiming for a core and 5G trial service in one market by the end of 2020. Indonesian police shoot militant who fatally slashed officer - Yahoo News Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian police fatally shot a suspected Islamic militant who killed an officer at a police station with a samurai-style sword, officials said Monday. National Police spokesman Ahmad Ramadhan said the suspect was shot as he tried to attack two other policemen after fatally slashing the first officer. The suspect died on the way to the hospital. The attack occurred early Monday at the South Daha police station in South Kalimantan province, he said. "One of the police officers died at the crime scene and the suspect was still trying to attack other officers. If the officer did not shoot, he would have killed more," Ramadhan said. "We are still investigating if the suspect was related to or inspired by the Islamic State group." He said police seized the sword, an Islamic State-style flag and a small Quran. South Kalimantan police spokesman Mohammad Rifai said the suspect burned a police car at the station before attacking the officers. Indonesia has carried out a sustained crackdown on Islamic militants since bombings on the tourist island of Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, mostly foreigners. Attacks on foreigners have been largely replaced in recent years by smaller, less deadly strikes targeting the government, police and anti-terrorism forces, inspired by Islamic State group attacks abroad. 'Eyeball exploded': Rubber bullet blinds photojournalist - Whitsunday Times Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT A photographer and writer documenting protests in Minneapolis has said she's been left permanently blind in her left eye after being shot by a rubber bullet fired by police. Linda Tirado was photographing the protests in Minneapolis when she was shot in the face with what's believed to be a rubber bullet fired by police. She said protesters took her to hospital after the police shot her, giving her medical supplies and acting as her eyes after her own became bloodied and swollen. After surgery, Ms Tirado learned the incident had left her permanently blind in her left eye. "What we think happened is I took a rubber bullet to the face," Ms Tirado wrote on Twitter. "It exploded my eyeball, which has now been patched back together but who knows if it'll need more surgery. My vision is gone no matter what it winds up looking like scar wise." Ms Tirado said it wasn't her "photography eye" so the incident shouldn't end her career. "I can still see flowers and sunsets, just maybe I won't be able to tell how far away they are," she said. She quickly learned some of the other things she may struggle with now that she's lost vision in her left eye.
While her eyeball has been "exploded" her sense of humour appears to have survived largely intact.
Ms Tirado said she'd take a day off before writing about the incident, and said she planned to "keep reporting from Minneapolis until we figure out how to get me and my car home cause I can't drive anymore". Ms Tirado is a freelance journalist, best known for her book Hand To Mouth, which expands on a viral article she wrote for the Huffington Post about why her and other "poor people's bad decisions make perfect sense". Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT Mobile safety app Parachute is today rolling out a new feature that will prevent an unauthorized person who grabs your iPhone to stop it from recording live video, even if they attempt to turn off the phone entirely. The timely update arrives amid the nationwide George Floyd protests against police brutality and the systemic racism present in the American justice system. Bystander video of Floyd's death triggered the demonstrations and protests, and video has continued to serve as key documentation of those events. The Parachute app, which first launched at TechCrunch Disrupt 2015 as "Witness," has long described itself as a panic button for the smartphone age. The app is intended to alert your emergency contacts when you're in trouble — by simultaneously calling, texting and emailing and by sending them your live video, audio and location straight from your current location. The app also has an option that allows users to record discreetly by blacking out the screen so it doesn't show that live video is being recorded. Plus, Parachute records simultaneously from both cameras to increase the chance of getting the incident on film. The video is pushed out from the phone to Parachute's platform and the evidence of the video is erased from the phone. In addition to the link sent to your emergency contacts, users can also later download the video from the link they're emailed directly. Despite its unique functionality, the app has gained only a small following in the years since its launch. According to data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Parachute has not topped 100,000 downloads on the U.S. App Store. It also doesn't currently rank on the App Store's charts. Parachute declined to provide user numbers, but noted its app has seen higher activity this past week in the U.S. and in Hong Kong. Its new feature, known as Superlock, is an attempt to regain interest in Parachute's video recording feature set. Superlock works in tandem with Apple's Guided Access to lock down the user's phone. Parachute explains how to set up Guided Access via an in-app tutorial. The process involves heading to the iPhone's Settings area, then going to the Guided Access section under Accessibility and toggling the switch so it's on. Afterward, you return to the app and triple-click the power button and tap on the "Start" button at the top right of the screen to select a six-digit passcode. This is the passcode that will have to be entered to stop Parachute from recording video in the future. You then triple-click the iPhone power button again, enter the passcode you just created again, and tap the "End" button on the top left. When setup is complete, you can put Parachute in Superlock mode at any time by triple-clicking the power button. The app will keep recording the video and lock down your iPhone until the power button is triple-clicked and the passcode is re-entered. This process cuts off access to the "X" button that typically displays to end a recording incident in the app. It also prevents anyone else who gains possession of your phone from shutting off the video themselves. The company explains that even if your phone runs out of battery, crashes or experiences a hard reboot, the Superlock feature can be configured to resume recording upon reboot. And Superlock can work with the feature that disables the video preview, so no one knows your phone is recording. Parachute can also run in the background as you switch and use other apps, the company adds. In the case that the unauthorized user tries to guess your passcode, an increasing time-delay mechanism will prevent them from trying too many combinations quickly — similar to how the iPhone stops people from having the chance to quickly try different passcodes. The company's business model allows for the storage of incidents that expire three months after being created. A full membership is $9.99/month for unlimited devices, contacts, alerts, incidents and storage. An affordable $2.99 per year "Lite" membership is also available. Parachute has not taken VC funding. The update is live today on iPhone. Trump threatens to deploy military as George Floyd protests continue to shake the U.S. - CNBC Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:08 PM PDT WASHINGTON -- As the nation prepared for another night of violent protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd, President Donald Trump threatened to deploy the military if states and cities failed to quell the demonstrations. "I am mobilizing all federal and local resources, civilian and military, to protect the rights of law abiding Americans," Trump said during a hastily arranged address at the White House. "Today I have strongly recommended to every governor to deploy the National Guard in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets. Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming presence until the violence is quelled," Trump said. "If a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them," said the president. Trump stopped short of invoking the Insurrection Act, an archaic law from 1807 that would allow Trump to deploy active-duty U.S. troops to respond to protests in cities across the country. "At this time, the president has not enacted the Insurrection Act," a senior Defense Department official told CNBC. "I refer you to the White House for more." During his address, Trump said he was taking "swift and decisive action to protect our great capital, Washington DC," adding, "What happened in this city last night was a total disgrace." "As we speak, I am dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers to stop the rioting, looting, vandalism, assaults and the wanton destruction of property." As the president spoke, riot police and military police outside the White House were using tear gas to clear protesters out of Lafayette Square, a public square in front of the president's residence. Following his remarks, Trump left the White House and walked through the square, and it appeared strongly as though the riot police had forcibly cleared the square for the sole purpose of clearing a path for the president. Once he reached the far side of the square, Trump raised a bible in front of St. John's Church, which had been set on fire by protesters the night before. The president did not try to talk to any of the protesters, however, leaving little doubt as to where his sympathies lay. U.S. President Donald Trump walks through Lafayette Park to visit St. John's Episcopal Church across from the White House during ongoing protests over racial inequality in the wake of the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody, at the White House in Washington, U.S., June 1, 2020. Tom Brenner | Reuters Trump's address followed a weekend where he threatened the protesters gathered outside the gates of the White House with the promise of "vicious dogs" and "ominous weapons." During a teleconference with governors Monday, Trump berated them for not using harsher tactics to quell the protests that have lit up dozens of American cities since last week, when Floyd, 46, an unarmed black man, was killed by Minneapolis police. "You have to dominate, if you don't dominate you're wasting your time. They're going to run over you. You're going to look like a bunch of jerks. You have to dominate," the president told governors. Trump pressured the governors to mobilize more National Guard units, called for 10 year prison sentences for violent protesters, and effectively blamed the governors themselves for the racial unrest in their states. "The only time [violent protests are] successful is when you're weak. And most of you are weak," Trump can be heard saying on the audio tape. Trump also told the governors he was putting the nation's highest-ranking military officer "in charge." "General Milley is here who's head of Joint Chiefs of Staff, a fighter, a warrior, and a lot of victories and no losses. And he hates to see the way it's being handled in the various states. And I've just put him in charge," Trump told governors. It was not immediately clear what Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley would be tasked with as it relates to the domestic unrest across the nation. The Pentagon added few details. "The chairman will continue to advise the secretary of Defense," Pentagon spokesperson U.S. Army Lt. Col. Chris Mitchell told CNBC. As of Monday morning, 23 states and the District of Columbia have mobilized more than 17,000 National Guard personnel in support of state and local authorities. More than 45,000 members of the National Guard are already supporting coronavirus response efforts at their governors' direction. Inside the White House there was little consensus Monday over what Trump should do next. Some aides advised the president to deliver a formal address to the nation, urging calm and unity. Other advisers recommended that Trump take the opposite tack, and escalate the federal response, up to and including Trump invoking the 1807 Insurrection Act to order federal troops into Washington D.C. The address Monday night appeared to be a way for Trump to thread the needle through both sides of the advice he was receiving: To address the nation, but to use the address to threaten harsher action. US President Donald Trump holds up a bible in front of St John's Episcopal church after walking across Lafayette Park from the White House in Washington, DC on June 1, 2020. Brendan Smialowski | AFP via Getty Images On Saturday, Trump had attempted to empathize with protesters and with Floyd's family during remarks he delivered at a SpaceX launch in Florida. "I understand the pain that people are feeling," Trump said. "We support the right of peaceful protesters, and we hear their pleas. But what we are now seeing on the streets of our cities has nothing to do with justice or with peace. "The memory of George Floyd is being dishonored by rioters, looters, and anarchists. The violence and vandalism is being led by Antifa and other radical left-wing groups who are terrorizing the innocent, destroying jobs, hurting businesses, and burning down buildings." But even in his scripted sympathy, Trump could not help but to politicize the protests by blaming "radical left-wing groups." Save for his trip to Florida, Trump spent the remainder of the weekend effectively negating the message of his speech there, tweeting out threats, calling for the military to quell the protests, and demanding more arrests. US unrest shows Biden's message challenge - Camden Advertiser Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:08 PM PDT United States, presidential challenger Joe Biden is facing some stiff competition in getting his campaign message out, as widespread protests continue across the country. President Donald Trump spent much of the weekend using Twitter as a bullhorn to urge "law and order" and tougher action by police against protesters around the country. Biden quietly visited the site of protests in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, and talked to some of the demonstrators. Earlier, he wrote a post on Medium expressing empathy for those despairing about the death of George Floyd in police custody. That low-key, high-touch approach might be a sign of how the presumptive Democratic nominee presents himself in the five months before the presidential election, emphasising calm and competence as a contrast to the president. This approach carries the risk of being drowned out by the much louder, more-persistent voice of Trump. On one of the most profound weekends in the nation, with violence in dozens of cities, Biden was out of wide public view. "He's not in office, and he certainly does not have the megaphone like the person currently occupying the White House does, but I do think our people are looking for someone who can make them feel better during these extremely tough times," said Republican Val Demings of Florida, whom Biden is considering as a running mate. "America just needs to be reassured that there's someone who's understanding, someone who's willing to say, 'Yes, we do have some issues', and someone who's willing to address it." Reassurance requires presence, though, and that has been a hurdle for the former vice-president, driven inside by the coronavirus pandemic. There are some signs Biden is looking to take on a more-active role. On Sunday, his campaign released a photo of him visiting the site of protests in Wilmington. Biden, wearing a mask to protect from COVID-19, knelt down to talk to a man and a young child. "The only way to bear this pain is to turn all that anguish to purpose," Biden wrote in a message attached to the photo. "And as President, I will help lead this conversation - and more importantly, I will listen." On Monday, Biden plans to venture out again to meet community leaders in Wilmington. Demings said she has also offered to have discussions with the Biden campaign on criminal justice reforms. "What I have done is offer my service to the campaign and, and anyone else, to look at what we can do working together moving forward. And so we'll see. We have a lot of work to do," she said. "We're going to discuss ideas and make recommendations." Biden released a criminal justice reform plan last July, but had not issued an updated or more specific proposal since. In early May, he released his "Plan for Black America," an economic- and education-focused agenda including marijuana decriminalisation. Much of Biden's campaign strategy centres on trying to draw a contrast with Trump on temperament and values. He's called the White House contest a battle for the soul of the nation and has been particularly forceful in condemning Trump's handling of moments of racial tension. Michael Jordan's Love Letter to Actress Amy Hunter Sells for $25.7K at Auction - Bleacher Report Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:48 PM PDT Thibault Camus)/Associated Press A 20-page love letter written by Michael Jordan to actress Amy Hunter in 1989 sold for $25,703 at an auction Sunday morning. The Action Network's Darren Rovell reported the result of the auction, along with providing photos of the letter: Darren Rovell @darrenrovell Details of the letter, obtained by Rovell, show Jordan in a state of regret—ostensibly about an affair with Hunter. "Amy, sometimes I am the most selfish person on this earth because for one whole year all I thought about was Michael. ... I admit I made a mistake, but found it difficult to change it. Let's say I do change the mistake. You would not believe the problems we would encounter. It is unthinkable. We wouldn't have a pleasant relationship or a private one. Our business up for opinions by the whole world. This is a pressure I can't live with." Jordan married his now-ex-wife, Juanita, in September 1989—a few months after he wrote his letter to Hunter. Their first son, Jeffrey, was born in 1988. Jordan alludes to Jeffrey in the letter. "Amy, if I was Michael Jordan, the ordinary man with a 9 to 5 job, then it wouldn't be hard to admit my mistake," Jordan wrote. "But instead, I am the Michael Jordan who is put on the pedestal and viewed to be the perfect role model. A lot of people, not just kids, but whole families. Can you imagine the responsibilities I have to deal with. Not to mention a baby by a lady who I have loved for 3 1/2 years." The letter sold for $2,560 in 2014, but its value skyrocketed after the success of The Last Dance. Watch: Officers attack protesters to clear a path for Trump’s photo op - Vox.com Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:08 PM PDT President Trump gave his first televised statement on the George Floyd protests Monday, emphasizing the need for "law and order" and threatening to send in the US military to violently disperse "mobs" across the country. Just before he spoke, federal police violently broke up a peaceful protest just outside the White House, tear-gassing a group of about 1,000 demonstrators and then firing rubber bullets at them so Trump could have an uninterrupted photo op at a nearby church damaged in the weekend's upheaval. The speech began on a seemingly sympathetic note, declaring that "all Americans were rightly sickened and revolted by the brutal death of George Floyd" and praising "the righteous cries of peaceful protesters." But after those opening lines, it immediately turned into an authoritarian-sounding denunciation of the protests raging across the country. Declaring that "I am the president of law and order," Trump warned that "our nation has been gripped by professional anarchists." He ordered mayors and governors to "dominate" the street, warning that "if a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them." Those who crossed Trump on this "will be detained and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." It was unclear, during the speech, precisely what any of this meant. It is illegal for the president to deploy the military in the fashion he's describing unless he invokes a law called the Insurrection Act, passed in 1807, which he has yet to do. But the true message of Trump's address could be seen near the White House. On H Street, one of the closest publicly accessible streets to the White House, a crowd had gathered to demonstrate against police violence. Without warning or provocation, the police shot tear gas into the crowd and fired rubber bullets. Mounted police rode into the crowd, herding the entirely peaceful and legitimate demonstrators away from their location. The reason for their move soon became clear. Trump had planned a visit to St. John's Church, on the same block as the demonstration. St. John's had been damaged during last night's upheaval and had become a cause célèbre for conservatives angry about the unrest. The protest was in the way. People gathering to demonstrate against police violence were attacked by the police so the president could have a photo op. Trump's claim to respect "peaceful protesters," and only want to forcefully break up the violent ones, was almost immediately shown to be hollow. Unrest forced Trump to White House bunker | The Star | Newcastle, NSW - Newcastle Star Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:08 PM PDT Secret Service agents rushed President Donald Trump to a White House bunker on Friday night as hundreds of protesters gathered outside the executive mansion, some of them throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades. Trump spent nearly an hour in the bunker, which was designed for use in emergencies like terrorist attacks, according to a Republican close to the White House who was not authorised to publicly discuss private matters and spoke on condition of anonymity. The account was confirmed by an administration official also on condition of anonymity. The abrupt decision by the agents underscored the rattled mood inside the White House, where the chants from protesters in Lafayette Park could be heard all weekend and Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers struggled to contain the crowds. Friday's protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after he was pinned at the neck by a white Minneapolis police officer. The demonstrations in Washington turned violent and appeared to catch officers by surprise. They sparked one of the highest alerts on the White House complex since the September 11 attacks in 2001 . "The White House does not comment on security protocols and decisions," said White House spokesman Judd Deere. The Secret Service said it does not discuss the means and methods of its protective operations. The president's move to the bunker was first reported by The New York Times. The president and his family have been shaken by the size and venom of the crowds, according to the Republican. It was not immediately clear if first lady Melania Trump and the couple's 14-year-old son, Barron, joined the president in the bunker. Secret Service protocol would have called for all those under the agency's protection to be in the underground shelter.
