| TIM, Telefonica and Claro present bid for Oi's mobile assets - Marketscreener.com Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:44 AM PDT  TIM Participacoes, Telefonica Brasil and America Movil SAB de CV presented a joint offer for the mobile unit of bankrupt Brazilian carrier Oi Group, according to filings by the companies on Saturday.The telecom firms did not disclose details of the offer. They said they asked Oi for the right to match potential offers it may have received in the competitive process for its assets. Oi said there was a second offer, but it did not disclose details. It declined to comment further. According to two sources with knowledge of the matter, the other party is a foreign strategic player with a small presence in Brazil. Oi will not choose the winner based solely on price but will also consider which group could secure regulatory approval for the deal faster, especially in terms of market concentration. In a separate statement, Oi said it received a 1.08 billion-reais ($200.59 million) binding offer for its tower unit from Highline do Brasil II Infraestrutura de Telecomunicações S.A. The Brazilian carrier set a minimum price of 15 billion reais ($2.79 billion) for its mobile assets. The company intends to use the proceeds of asset sales to fund its growing broadband fiber unit and pay off debt, aiming to exit bankruptcy protection. It was not clear if the offers met the minimum price. TIM Brasil SA and Telefonica Brasil said in May they were planning a joint offer for Oi's mobile business, despite the COVID-19 outbreak, not mentioning Claro. "The transaction, if completed, shall add value to all shareholders and clients by means of further growth, generation of operational efficiencies and service quality enhancement," the three bidders said in statements. Oi, Brazil's largest fixed-line carrier had approximately 65 billion reais ($12.65 billion) of debt when it filed for bankruptcy protection. | Protesters demonstrate in support of fruit vendor in viral video - Santa Clarita Valley Signal Posted: 18 Jul 2020 11:47 PM PDT At least 70 people gathered on a Canyon Country street Saturday to protest a Santa Clarita Valley restaurant owner who was featured on a viral video in a confrontation with a street vendor. The video, which was published last week, shows the Bergie's Bar and Grill owners, who are a couple, admonishing Leobardo Ramirez and Sergio Medina, L.A. residents who own La Palma Fresh Fruit. In the video, Ramirez and Medina have their fruit stand set up next to a gas station near the Bergie's location, and the owner is chastising them to leave the area, questioning whether the pair were licensed — which they later acknowledged not to be. "Our message of this protest is to spread love for our street vendors, our immigrant workers, our Hispanic community in Santa Clarita, and more specifically Canyon Country, it's a message of love, it's not a message of hate," said Olive Simpson, one of the event organizers and a member of SCV Workers for Opportunity.   The protesters said they had seen the video that featured the owners of Bergie's Bar and Grill telling the owners of La Palma Fresh Fruit their fruit stand was illegal. After the video went viral, a few hundred people went to the La Palma fruit stand this past week in a showing of support for Ramirez and Medina.    The protesters' goal on Saturday was not to force Bergie's to close, but to spread awareness and compassion for their fellow man, Simpson said. "It's the opportunity to show someone that we can educate them peacefully on why racism and bigotry are wrong and unacceptable," said Simpson. "One more person being educated, is one more person towards making the world a better place." Bergie's ownership could not be reached for comment as of the publication of this story. (AP) — Diego Rossi had the first four-goal game of the MLS is Back tournament and Los Angeles Football Club defeated rival LA Galaxy 6-2 on Saturday night in a Group F matchup. The past week has spun a whirlwind of emotions after thousands of international students worried that recent federal regulations would strip them of their visas. Although the restrictions have since been lifted, some still harbor resentments toward the Trump administration and fear that their immigration status remains unsafe for the fall semester. On Tuesday, federal judge and 1988 Penn Law graduate Allison D. Burroughs announced that the United States government revoked a new immigration policy that would have banned international students who are taking an online-only course load this fall from entering or staying in the country. International students account for about 21% of Penn's graduate and undergraduate student population as of fall 2019. "I was relieved and I was angry," incoming Graduate School of Education first-year April Zhou, an international student from China, said. "It just feels like the government and the administration just didn't really give a damn about us." Zhou, who has lived in the U.S. for the past ten years under her F-1 student visa, has spent the last week fearing deportation in the event that GSE could not guarantee her an in-person class. As GSE plans to operate entirely online in fall 2020, with the exception of some clinal and executive programs, Zhou, who is currently in the U.S., felt that she was at risk of deportation. On Monday, Zhou asked the University of Michigan, which is offering in-person classes this fall, to reinstate her intent to enroll for the upcoming semester this fall. But on Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security revoked the restrictions. Zhou then decided to stick with her original decision to continue her education at Penn this fall. Like Zhou, rising Engineering senior and Chair of International Students Advisory Board Derya Yavuz was eager to be on campus this fall, but ICE's announcement had put her plans on pause as she scrambled to ensure she had at least one in-person fall course to shield her from potential deportation. On Thursday, she finally purchased her plane ticket from Turkey to the U.S. to return to campus this fall.  Some international students who hoped to study remotely from their home country this semester now feel comfortable moving forward with their fall plans. Rising College senior Edward Jiang, who is a New Zealand citizen and Australian resident, has been staying in Philadelphia at his friend's apartment since Penn transitioned to an online-only instruction model in March. Jiang was planning to return home to Australia in August and take his courses remotely this fall. The new ICE policy, however, made him hesitate to do so. It was unclear whether or not he would lose his visa status under the restrictions if he returned home, Jiang said. "The ICE policy put a lot of pressure on international students and there were a lot of factors that were outside our control," Jiang said. After the ICE order was reversed, Jiang said he confidently booked his flight home knowing that he can study remotely and maintain his active F-1 student visa status while in Australia. Rising College and Wharton junior Hugo Leo also said he now feels more comfortable in his choice to take his fall courses online from his home country, Indonesia. "It's definitely relieved a lot of our fears and uncertainties, especially for our visa status moving forward," Leo said. "Now I can revert back to my original way of thinking which is just considering this decision on the health basis as well as on an education basis." Many undergraduates applauded International Students and Scholar Services as well as the University for helping international students navigate through the uncertainty and panic caused by the policy. "I was personally really inspired seeing how Penn handled the situation," Leo said. He also described ISSS as "probably one of the country's best international student offices." Zhou, however, said she felt GSE did not communicate well with her as she tried to seek solutions that would save her visa status. "As a student, it doesn't seem like they're as invested in my success as maybe some of the other programs are and I'm not even in their program," she said. "That makes me a little bit angry." Zhou remains concerned that new, threatening immigration policies could still arise. "Because of what happened, I still don't feel 100% safe," Zhou said. Leo said that ICE's policy, although rescinded, left him with a heightened awareness of how quickly his immigration status could be taken away. "This experience has made me realize the fragility of our immigration status as well as the importance of rallying around the greater international and immigrant community in the U.S.," Leo said. "For me, Tuesday's announcement is only a partial victory as there are still immigrant communities in the U.S. who experience our fear but on a daily basis." The new guidelines, announced by ICE's Student and Exchange Visitor Program on July 6, received widespread backlash. Two days later, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration over the new policy. The legal battle gained nationwide attention as more than fifty universities, including Penn, filed an amicus brief in support of the lawsuit. Aubameyang has hit 64 goals in 104 games for Arsenal since moving to Emirates Stadium from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018. The Gabon international has solidified his reputation as one of Europe's top strikers in the process, but as it stands, he will become a free agent in 2021. Arsenal have yet to tie the 31-year-old down to fresh terms, and he gave a non-committal update on his future following the team's 4-0 win over Norwich on July 1. He told BT Sport: "We're going to talk to the club and we'll see what happens. "First of all I'm really focused on the games and the end of the season so we'll see." Ex-Gunners defender Keown is still hoping that Aubameyang extends his stay in north London, but if not, he believes Southampton talisman Ings would be the ideal replacement.

| Posted: 18 Jul 2020 08:08 PM PDT  AC Milan produced yet another dominant display on Saturday night as they swept Bologna aside at San Siro, winning 5-1. The Rossoneri started the game like a house on fire, scoring through Alexis Saelemaekers and Hakan Calhanoglu in the first half before Tomiyasu's wonder strike before half time. Stefano Pioli's side came out after the break and finished the job though, with Ismael Bennacer and Ante Rebic scoring before Davide Calabria added the icing on the cake. The result moves Milan a point behind Roma in fifth and eight points ahead of Sassuolo as their charge towards a European spot continues. Milan had the first real opportunity of the game in the sixth minute as Rebic cut inside and fired straight at Skorupski after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had led the break. They had another big chance not long after as some lovely interplay down the left found Theo Hernandez in space inside the box, however he also fired at the Bologna stopper. The Rossoneri took the lead in the 10th minute as they finally made their early dominance pay. A marauding run by Theo Hernandez saw the Frenchman provide a perfect cut-back for Alexis Saelemaekers, who finished into the bottom corner after Ibrahimovic's smart dummy.

Bologna fired their first shot on goal not long after the first cooling break, as Riccardo Orsolini's dipping free-kick from 25 yards was easily saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. It was so close to being 3-0 in the 36th minute as Milan struck the upright. Saelemaekers stole the ball and carried the break forward, feeding Rebic down the right who cut the ball back to Kessie, but the Ivorian saw his effort deflected onto the right post and the ball cannoned away. Milan continued to pepper the Rossoblu goal, and Kessie was close to netting again as he picked the ball up inside the area and shot from a narrow angle, drawing a smart save from Skorupski. Just before half-time though it was Bologna who got themselves back into the game through as Tomiyasu produced some individual brilliance, cutting in from the right before firing an effort into the top left corner past a motionless Donnarumma. The last chance before the break came from the foot of Kessie again; the midfielder rolling the ball past the near post from 20 yards after a pass from Saelemaekers who had led a counter. The visiting side had the first half chance of the second half, as Orsolini blasted the ball over the bar having been found in space on the right side of the box, with options in the middle. However, just moments later it was 3-1. Milan won the ball back in midfield and Calhanoglu rolled the ball into the path of Bennacer, who was allowed to stroll through into the box and fire into the bottom-left corner via a deflection.
Four minutes before the hour mark it was 4-1, and Ibrahimovic got his second assist of the night. The Swede rolled the ball into the path of Rebic, who given his remarkable recent form was never going to miss with his effort from the left side of the box, firing past Skorupski with a precise first-time shot.
A triple substitution followed not long after, as Rade Krunic, Rafael Leao and Giacomo Bonaventura came on in place of Ibrahimovic, Calhanoglu and Saelemaekers. Milan twice came close to adding a fifth just after the hour mark, the first time through Theo Hernandez's shot after another lung-busting run, the second occasion being a shot dragged wide from 20 yards by the substitute Krunic when he was in acres of space. There was more chaos inside the Bologna box not long after as the ball ricocheted around before finding its way to Kessie, who took a touch before shooting and seeing his effort cleared off the line. Leao became the latest player to fire at goal in the 76th minute as he stung Skorupski's palms with a powerful drive, while at the other end Donnarumma did well to save a rare indirect free-kick from Santander after a back pass was wrongly called. A double change followed from Milan as Lorenzo Colombo and Lucas Biglia came on for Ante Rebic and Ismael Bennacer respectively. Davide Calabria added the finishing touch as he converted calmly from Leao's feed to make it 5-1 after some fantastic interplay down the right flank.

Alexandrovskaya was born in the Russian capital in 2000, but went on to represent Australia at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang after obtaining Australian citizenship in 2016. The young skater formed a hugely successful partnership with 23-year-old Harley Windsor and went on to win the world junior title in 2017 and the 2017/18 ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. | Jeyaraj and Benicks: Why was a viral video on custodial deaths taken down? - BBC News Posted: 18 Jul 2020 05:47 PM PDT  An Instagram video about the custodial deaths of a father and son in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu was instrumental in getting the case national attention. But now Suchitra Ramadurai has taken down her video. She spoke to the BBC's Andrew Clarance about why. "Hi, I'm Suchitra, and I'm south Indian and I hate how every south Indian issue just remains a south Indian issue because we don't talk about it in English." This was the opening line of Ms Ramadurai's video, that went on to get millions of views in India and across the world. Armed with details from the case filed by the victims' family, and matching eyewitness reports, she then goes on to explain in graphic detail what happened to P Jeyaraj, 58, and his son Benicks, 38, who were arrested and held an entire night at the Sathankulam police station in Tuticorin town. They died within hours of each other two days later. Relatives of the two men say the men were subjected to brutal torture and even sexual abuse after they were picked up for allegedly keeping their stores open past permitted hours - Tamil Nadu is still observing a lockdown to curb the spread of Covid. Ms Ramadurai, a singer, and a radio jockey with a popular radio station in Chennai (formerly Madras) is a familiar name in Tamil Nadu's capital city. She ends the video saying, "Let's fight the system. Wherever you are in the world, share this video." What followed was extraordinary. Her video ended up getting more than 20 million views and set off a chain reaction across social media. Video posts detailing the case started popping up in regional languages, calling for justice for the two men. It then made it way on to national news with trends emerging on Twitter and Instagram as politicians, cricketers, business personalities, comedians and Bollywood actors tweeted about the case. With mounting national outrage over the incident, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation - a federal investigation agency. Since then, five policemen have been arrested and charged with murder in relation to the custodial deaths. Days later, five more police personnel, including a sub-Inspector, were arrested. The officers who were accused in the deaths were initially transferred. But as demands for more severe action grew, they were suspended. It was at this point that Ms Ramadurai says she was asked to delete the video by the Tamil Nadu police. The police say that she has "falsely exaggerated and sensationalized the chain of events," and is not backed by proof." In a statement released on Twitter, the police said that Ms Ramadurai video was promoting hatred against the police. Ms Ramadurai said that an officer of the state's criminal investigation department asked her to delete the video as the details in the video were in direct contrast to what was mentioned in the post-mortem report of the two men. "I asked her for a copy of the post-mortem report but she said no" Ms Ramadurai told the BBC, adding that the officer told her that it was a sealed document sent directly to the judge in the case. "I'm surprised then how she got to see it and point out inaccuracies in my video, if it is a sealed document." But Ms Ramadurai said she then took down the video on the advice of her lawyer. Police brutality is a serious problem in India. A report by a consortium of NGOs against custodial torture have released a report in which they say 1,731 people died in custody in India during 2019. This works out to around five custodial deaths a day. Speaking to the BBC, a former Inspector-general of Police in the southern state of Karnataka, Gopal Hosur, said it was important for policemen to go by the rule book. "When a person is in your custody, he is helpless, there is no question using these methods. You can gather evidence by means other than using force," he said. And Ms Ramadurai remains defiant. Even though she deleted the video, she feels that its job has been done and people can't be fooled by statements. "This video spread mainly because of 90s kids and millennials. You can't fool people by saying its fake and was meant to cause anarchy. The younger generation can see through it all. They won't buy it." Could T-Mobile's "Scam Shield" actually help? The free service for T-Mobile and Sprint subscribers attacks the problem in a number of ways. There's caller ID that can spot incoming scan calls and block them. No-cost phone number changes once per year, too. But the most unusual wrinkle of all is the ability to create a proxy phone number. Starting on July 24, subscribers to Magenta or Essentials phone plans will be able to create a second phone number for free while keeping their main number private. So if you're signing up for something on a website, for example, you can provide your proxy number instead of your main one. Being able to use that second number on your phone won't necessarily shut down robocalls and scams. The second number is still your number, and the calls still come through. But it's an added layer of protection. If you know the proxy number is only going to get calls from a certain subset of callers, many of whom you'd rather not hear from, it becomes easier to weed those calls out. Right? It remains to be seen how helpful proxy numbers really are, but T-Mobile and Sprint subscribers can find setup instructions right here. Different phone service providers have hatched their own solutions for weeding out scams. AT&T has its own automatic fraud call blocker set up. Android also has some similar stuff built in at the system level. There are third-party apps that can do it as well (but that's not a perfect solution). Even the FCC and FTC have been stepping up the fight against robocalls. And why wouldn't they? Spammy phone calls that are often driven by fraudulent motives are a near-daily scourge in 2020 for anyone who subscribes to a mobile phone plan. Scam Shield may not be a new idea, but maybe proxy numbers will help in a way that other measures haven't so far.
