NEW MARKET — An informative video for parents was uploaded to Southmont’s online platforms Friday following a public meeting July 6 where discussion was held concerning fall re-entry plans.

The video shows Superintendent Dr. Shawn Greiner, Southmonth High School Principal Jesse Burgess, Southmont Junior High Principal Kevin Wilkinson and New Market Elementary Principal Brittany Cooper sharing plans regarding the Aug. 6 re-entry to in-person instruction, including social distancing, transportation, face coverings and water.

Greiner said staff and administrators have collaborated with local and state health departments and surrounding districts to prepare a safe re-entry plan amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“(The week of June 20) you will receive an email from your child’s principal outlining the school’s re-entry plan in detail,” he said. “It will be important for us to follow certain procedures to ensure the health and safety of all of our students, families and staff. Our plan will be fluid and it may change as we proceed throughout the school year.”

In-person instruction will be encouraged, but online options will be available for students with medical conditions and those concerned with returning to campus.

Additionally, procedures will be implemented to help prevent the spread of the virus from one student to another. Keeping them in groups, for instance, can mitigate contact tracing if a positive case is discovered.

“To limit contact and promote social distancing, all classrooms will follow a cohort model,” Burgess said. “Special teachers will travel to homeroom classes to teach their lessons when possible (and) high school level students will follow their existing five-period schedule, rotating cohorts every 12 days to allow for live instruction, in each class, every semester.”

Hand-sanitizing stations will be available in each building, and handwashing opportunities will be encouraged to promote hygiene and cleanliness.

“Our school counselors and nurses will leave safety lessons about mask-wearing, social distancing, handwashing and healthy habits,” Cooper said. “There will be certain situations where social distancing is not possible. The students and staff will be required to wear masks.”

Employees will receive training concerning symptoms of COVID-19 and screening measures, and clinics will have separate spaces to treat symptomatic students.

Cooper added students will be required to have a mask with them at all times, and that the school will provide a cloth mask for students and staff. Masks brought from home may be used as well.

Masks will also be required for students who ride a bus to school. Each bus will follow an assigned-seating chart, and those who share a household will be seated together.

“Arrival and dismissal times will be staggered,” Wilkinson added. “All Southmont schools will operate on a 30-minute early dismissal for at least the first semester. There will not be Late Start Wednesdays during this time.”

Other social-distancing measures include touchless water bottle filling stations, which have been installed in each building. Students should bring a water bottle from home, Wilkinson said, in lieu of using drinking fountains.

Visitors will not be permitted inside district buildings to promote social distancing, he said

“Unfortunately, visitors and guests will be restricted,” Wilkinson said. “Large social gatherings, such as Back-to-School Night, Grandparents’ Day and musical programs will be altered or postponed.”

Furthermore, Chrome Books (laptops) will be utilized as much as possible to prevent the sharing of materials.

“We thank you for your patience, your cooperation and your support throughout this experience,” Greiner said. “Together, we can ensure a successful return.”
