BLACKPINK's Rosé breaks multiple Guinness World Records - The Independent Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:46 AM PDT BLACKPINK's Rosé breaks multiple Guinness World Records - The Independent - Advertisement - Roseanne Park, known by her stage name Rosé has broken multiple Guinness World Records. The Australian singer is part of South Korean girl group BLACKPINK and she achieved several records because of BLACKPINK's hit single, How You Like That. On the first day of its debut on YouTube, the music video for How You Like That gained 86.3 million views making it the most viewed video on YouTube in 24 hours. Besides that, the hit single is the most viewed music video on the platform in 24 hours and also most-viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-pop group. Previously, the three records were held by South Korean boy band BTS with their track, Boy With Luv, in a collaboration with US singer Halsey. The most viewed records on YouTube were also held by US singers Ariana Grande with Thank U Next and Taylor Swift's Look What You Made Me Do. How You Like That was released in June and it became an overnight success. The track reached number 1 in iTunes charts in more than 60 countries including America, with over 200 million views on YouTube. BLACKPINK recently teamed up with US singer Lady Gaga and they released the single Sour Candy. The single reached No.8 on the ARIA singles chart. Sour Candy is now the highest-charting single from a K-pop in Australia. BTS and Halsey's Boy With Luv previously held the record which peaked at No. 10. BLACKPINK is a South Korean group but Rosé was born in New Zealand and raised in Melbourne. - Advertisement - Her fellow band member Lisa is Thai. Rosé was studying at the Canterbury Girl's Secondary College in her teenage years when she was discovered after succeeding a local audition for Korean entertainment agency YG Entertainment. She then moved to Seoul to learn singing, dancing and language lessons for a few years before debuting with BLACKPINK in late 2016. Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:46 AM PDT Interview: Xiaxue responds as netizens pressure brands to 'reconsider' engagement - Marketing Interactive As Singapore gears up for the General Election on Friday, there has been a flurry of activity in the online space. Several individuals have come under the spotlight during this period, from former PAP candidate Ivan Lim, Workers' Party's Jamus Lim and Raeesah Khan, as well as Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat. Outside of politics, Singaporean blogger and influencer Wendy Cheng, also popularly known as Xiaxue, was also thrusted into the spotlight for comments made in 2010 about migrant workers. Her tweets made in 2019 concerning the transgender community have also resurfaced. These comments resurfaced in recent times as Cheng recently posted on her Instagram Stories that Workers' Party candidate Khan should "stop trying to divide the nation with [her] race politics" and that political parties should "stop fielding radical feminists/leftists as candidates". Following her comments, netizens have taken it upon themselves to reach out to brands that have worked with Cheng to "hold her accountable" and have them "reconsider" future partnerships with her. A Google document created by netizens and seen by Marketing compiled a list of brands that have worked with Cheng since January 2019. They include Benefit Cosmetics, Bio-essence Singapore, Clicknetwork, Sephora, AmorePacific, Lazada Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa, Liho Singapore, Domino's Pizza Singapore, OSIM, Magiclean, Dream Cruise Line, Daniel Wellington, Chir Chir Singapore, Caltex Singapore, Giga Experience, and Brother Singapore, among others. The document also included screenshots of the brands and Cheng's past controversial tweets. "To make our voices matter, and to stop the harm Xiaxue is doing to racial minorities, the trans community, and immigrants, we need to raise awareness to the brands and companies that are financing her. This is one of the only ways to hold Xiaxue accountable," the document read. When reached out to by Marketing, online buying and selling platform Reebonz said that the company last worked with Cheng in September 2019 for its Warehouse Sale campaign, where Cheng was hired to generate awareness for the sale via social media posts. It added that Reebonz believes in inclusiveness and its products and services are designed to make the experience of online luxury shopping accessible to the global community with no exceptions. "We do not support bigotry and are neither prejudiced against those from diverse backgrounds. As such, we will not be endorsing personalities who do," it said. Printer manufacturer Brother Singapore told Marketing that it is currently not in partnership with Cheng and its last collaboration was for its limited-edition Hello Kitty label printer where Cheng helped promote the machine, as well as the new tape designs. It added that Brother International Singapore has been serving the local community since 1986 and it embraces and supports diversity and inclusion. "If Cheng really expressed inappropriate comments, then her views contradict with our values. As such, we will not continue our partnership with her," it added. The brand also said that it recently supported a mask sewing campaign named MaskForce, which is aimed at protecting migrant workers and domestic helpers against COVID-19. Likewise, fried chicken brand Chir Chir also clarified that it worked with Cheng a year ago on a one-time engagement. "We would like to clarify that she is not an ambassador of Chir Chir. Her political and societal views are her own personal opinion and do not represent our brand in any way," the brand said. Caltex Singapore, Bio-essence Singapore and digital mobile service provider Giga also said that they are currently not in any partnerships with Cheng and do not associate with her personal social media posts. On the other hand, Panos Fournarakis, MD of Sunrise Experience based in Zurich, Switzerland, said the company chose to work with Cheng because she has an opinion. "This is unique in the marketing business as people are paid to say what the advertisers want," he said. According to Fournarakis, Cheng is hired to say what she really thinks and while this is tough for most brands, this is the only reason why her opinion matters. "As a true believer in Singapore and its cultural diversity, I believe that Cheng is an expression of the society. She represents only herself and she is willing to take the responsibility," he added. Sunrise Experience has collaborated with Cheng since 2014. It first sponsored a wedding experience and photoshoot in Santorini, Greece. The two parties collaborated again in 2018 for a honeymoon and photoshoot experience in Paris, Switzerland and Austria. Marketing understands that Cheng still has certain brands choosing to work with her, that would like to remain anonymous. Cheng's side of the story In a phone conversation with Marketing, Cheng explained that the tweets highlighted in the document was born out of anger she experienced when she was younger, having been a victim of sexual assault by migrant workers when she was a teenager - something she has spoken about on her own platforms as well. "My consideration at that point when I was angry was to protect females rather than the feelings of the group that I was accusing. I felt that it was an urgent problem and a bigger priority," Cheng said. "To tell us that we as women cannot talk about this, is silencing us and it is blatantly unfair. I think that instead of trying to arrest people for racism, the government should do something about it. But these were my feelings from years ago, and I don't have animosity towards this group of people anymore," she said. Cheng also clarified that she does not mean to come across as getting "sob story points" by sharing her experience as a victim of sexual assault, and stressed that those were the emotions and thoughts she was experiencing at the point of time when the tweets were posted. Another tweet that also surfaced was of Cheng stating: "That's the difference between: 'You are a stupid worthless N-word' and 'You the coolest N-word I know bro!'. Cheng explained that people should be given a chance to grow and mature, and what was considered offensive 10 years ago is different now. According to her, words such as "tr*nny" or the N-word were nowhere as offensive in the past, as they are right now given culture and education evolves with time. "You cannot judge what somebody said 10 years ago at the present time. The guidelines are different. What I said 10 years ago did not cause any racial disharmony and to have that be dug out now and have the police intervene is clearly the effort of the people who dislike me and want to cancel me," she said. Cheng also said that it is unfair that individuals quote a snippet of her tweet without understanding the nuance and context behind it. "I have probably written millions of words in the 17 years of blogging but they have managed to find those two to three tweets to prove their point. Everyone has their own prejudices, what is important is how you act on those racist thoughts. Do not discriminate or abuse people. Try to better yourself, learn more and be open to listening. That is an important point versus what you say when you are angry. That is a lot less telling of someone's character," Cheng explained. Separately, Cheng has also defended herself in a blog post, saying that she would never discriminate migrant workers to their face, shout abuse at them, or harm them in any way. "If I owned a company that needed their labour, I will still hire them. If I see one of them in need, I will help him," she said. A word to brand partners from Cheng Adding on to the topic of maintaining client relationships, Cheng told Marketing that she understands that not all brands know how to react when such a situation occurs, and there have been no prominent findings on whether there would be a difference in brand sales if they ignored the online furore or disassociated themselves with the influencer in question. "So far, the PR handbook is to follow what other brands have done, which is to either ignore or disassociate," she said, adding: A lot of times, brands feel that it is safer for them to disassociate as there will be no harm. "I think it is ridiculous that brands are claiming I am against diversity or inclusion from a few decade old tweets that have no context to them, just because the mob told them to," Cheng said. However, there is a lot of harm as cancel culture does not discriminate, she added. Cancel culture is the practice of boycotting companies or public figures after doing something offensive or deemed so. Cheng added that at this point, there might be brands which back out because netizens have been flooding their pages accusing them of racism if they continue to support the influencer. However, she believes that brands should not "embolden the mob" as some might not have intentions riddled with "toxicity". She stressed that this vocal group of individuals do not represent all. "When they say they will boycott a brand, the first thing to consider is also whether they were ever going to be customers in the first place. Brands should not pander to them. It tells people that brands agree with cancel culture," she explained. Nonetheless, Cheng said she understands that such a situation can be scary for brands that have never dealt with controversy previously. She added that as a means of safeguarding, brands can clarify the type of work they are doing with an influencer, such as reviews or one-off projects. Working with a brand doesn't make any influencer an automatic ambassador. "Most of the time, it is a review. It does not mean that the brand endorses absolutely every single thing that the influencer has said before in her life. It just means that the brand feels the influencer is suitable for the brand and he/she is able to help bring in sales," she explained. "Brands need to understand that influencers are not billboards. We are humans and humans have opinions. The fact that we have opinions is the very reason why people follow us and trust the things we say," she said, adding that:
Cheng added that brands need to understand and be able to explain that they worked with a particular influencer because it was effective. But that does not mean that they endorse everything he or she says and that they stand by the influencer's right to voice his or her opinion. "I personally feel that every brand that has worked with me knows my history. This does not mean that they fully agree with me, but they still chose to work with me. There are brands out there who feel that they are bullied into disassociating with me," she said. "I genuinely feel that it is very sad that the mob is doing this to brands and companies are forced to take a stance. When they do disassociate with me, the mob then celebrates because they think this proves that the influencer is indeed a racist when in fact, the company might have been pressured to take such a stance," Cheng explained. Naya Rivera, ‘Glee’ Actress, Is Missing at California Lake - The New York Times Posted: 09 Jul 2020 12:48 AM PDT Naya Rivera, 33, who starred in six seasons of Fox's "Glee" as the sharp-witted cheerleader Santana Lopez, was missing on Wednesday night as a search team scoured Lake Piru in California, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office said that it was searching for a "possible drowning victim" in the lake. The search was suspended late Wednesday and will be resumed Thursday morning. A sheriff's office spokesman, Eric Buschow, said that Ms. Rivera had rented a boat with her 4-year-old son on Wednesday afternoon. Another boater found the son alone on the boat at 4 p.m., he said. The boy was safe on Wednesday night, he said. Ms. Rivera began acting as a 4-year-old on the CBS sitcom "The Royal Family" and made guest appearances on a number of shows, including "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "Family Matters" and "Baywatch." She broke through to wider stardom on "Glee," with her role growing throughout the first season before she was made a series regular in the second season. Ms. Rivera married the actor Ryan Dorsey in 2014 and gave birth to their son, Josey Hollis, in 2015. The couple split in 2018. Her most recent post on Twitter was a photo of herself and her son. The cast of "Glee" has dealt with its share of heartbreak. Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, was found dead in a hotel room in 2013 from a drug overdose when he was 31. Mark Salling, who played Noah Puckerman, was 35 when he died in an apparent suicide in 2018, weeks after he pleaded guilty to federal charges of being in possession of child pornography.
'Glee' actress Naya Rivera missing after boating on California Lake - NBC News Posted: 08 Jul 2020 11:48 PM PDT Authorities are searching a Southern California lake for "Glee" actress Naya Rivera, who officials believe went missing while swimming Wednesday. The 33-year-old from Woodland Hills had been boating with her son on Lake Piru, Ventura County Sheriff's Department Capt. Eric Buschow said. The actress rented a boat about 1 p.m, he said, and three hours, later authorities found her son napping alone on the vessel. The child told officials that the pair had been swimming but that Rivera never returned, Buschow said. "There's another adult life vest found on the boat," the captain said. On Wednesday night, the department identified in a tweet Rivera as the person for whom they were searching until it became too dark. The department said the search would continue at "first light." Lake Piru is about 56 miles north-northwest of Los Angeles. A manager for Rivera had no immediate response Wednesday night. Rivera is best known for playing Santana Lopez on "Glee," a high school glee club musical and comedy that ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015. At least two "Glee" performers have died since the series' conclusion. In 2018, 35-year-old Mark Salling, who faced up to seven years in prison for child pornography possession, was found dead in Los Angeles. Law enforcement sources said at the time that they believed he died by suicide. In her 2016 book, "Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up," Rivera wrote about her struggle with the death of her "Glee" co-star Cory Monteith, who passed away in 2013 from a drug overdose. "The Cory chapter really choked me up. I had (co-star) Kevin (McHale) come over and help me edit and we both had our moment," Rivera said in an interview with the Associated Press. Some "Glee" co-stars weighed in on her disappearance on Twitter late Wednesday. Harry Shum, Jr., who played Mike Chang said, "Praying." Iqbal Theba, who played Principal Abigail Figgins Gunderson on the show, said, "Oh God... mercy... please... " Rivera is from the Santa Clarita neighborhood of Valencia, about 23 miles from the lake. She was married to actor Ryan Dorsey, the boy's father, but the pair divorced after four years in 2018. Last week, she tweeted, "Everyday you're alive is a blessing." Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:08 PM PDT The Australian government has advised its citizens not to travel to Hong Kong, and to reconsider their need to remain in Hong Kong, due to uncertainties surrounding the new national security law there. "The new national security legislation for Hong Kong could be interpreted broadly. Under the law, you could be deported or face possible transfer to mainland China for prosecution under mainland law," according to a notice on Thursday by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller website. It added that the full extent of the law and how it will be applied is not yet clear and that Australians could be "at increased risk of detention on vaguely defined national security grounds. You could break the law without intending to." Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. The new law took effect last Tuesday, after the top decision-making body in the Chinese parliament voted to approve it. The city has experienced months of pro-democracy demonstrations that sometimes turned violent. Beijing says the Hong Kong national security law is aimed at prohibiting secession, subversion of state power, terrorism activities and foreign interference. Opponents of the law, including British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab, say it undermines Hong Kong's autonomy that was promised when the special administrative region was handed over to China in 1997. Under the "one country, two systems" policy, the territory has a largely separate legal and economic system from the mainland that reflects its British colonial heritage. That framework — known as the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China — is supposed to be in place until 2047. Since March, Australians have been banned from traveling overseas — unless they obtain an exemption, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Suarez goal gives Barcelona win, relegates neighbors Espanyol - ProSoccerTalk Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:42 PM PDT Seventh-place one season ago, La Liga mainstays Espanyol are being relegated from Spain's top flight. The final decision came at the hands of their Catalan neighbors Barcelona, who got a second-half goal from Luis Suarez to relegate Espanyol. [ MORE: Premier League summer schedule ] Espanyol are 11 points back of 17th place and can only capture nine more points this season following the 1-0 loss in a match where both teams had a player sent off. Suarez's goal was a nice one after Antoine Griezmann's back heel pass to Lionel Messi saw the Argentine's shot deflect onto the path of the Uruguayan finisher. Espanyol had been in the top flight since 1994 and has only spent four single seasons outside La Liga since 1929. Leganes and Mallorca may join them soon. Barcelona moves a point back of Real Madrid. Real has four matches left to Barca's three and holds the tiebreaker.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is singing a new tune, hopeful that star midfielder Paul Pogba will stick around Old Trafford for the long term. Reports say that United has an option to extend Pogba's contract by an extra year beyond its 2021 expiry, but Solskjaer is thinking bigger. He has been praising Pogba plenty since the World Cup winner returned to the lineup. [ MORE: Premier League summer schedule ] It's a bit surprising given Pogba and his super agent's constant time in the rumor mill, with Real Madrid often linked with the Frenchman. And that agent, Mino Raiola, has not been so nice when it comes to judging Solskjaer. But Solskjaer is reportedly hopeful that Pogba can join Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and others in building a new power.
Pogba leads United in key passes per game with 2.3, though his minutes have been severely limited by injuries this season. He had 13 goals and nine assists last season, and turned 27 in March. The way United's performed in recent weeks it would not be a surprise if keeping its main talents while adding another stalwart center back and wing would propel it into a more serious table discussion. Do you buy the idea that Pogba could be with United well into the future? Liverpool's 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion was a bit more what we're used to from the Premier League champions. But that wasn't the focus of the post-match despite a highlight-reel show from Mohamed Salah, as Reds boss Jurgen Klopp sounded an ominous note when asked about Jordan Henderson leaving the match with injury. "I don't know exactly but it was something with the knee I think. We know it's not nothing." [ MORE: Premier League summer schedule ] Henderson's not exactly a player to hit the deck unless he's feeling pain, and Klopp removed him for James Milner with 10 minutes to play. That's about the only bad news from the win, as Liverpool became the first team this season to breach the 90-point mark and saw Salah's brace move him within three goals of the Golden Boot lead. Salah would only say, "Let's take it game-by-game," but it's clearly on his mind. Trent Alexander-Arnold says the Egyptian is hungry to get a share of a third-straight Golden Boot.
As for the match, Brighton almost as missed some big chances as Liverpool before the game was out of reach. Klopp admits that it was a challenge. "We started really well," Klopp said. "We had to adapt a little bit as we knew what they wanted to do but it was a little bit hard to defend. We left one or two players in a position where if we won the ball we had players in the counter-attack position. We got the first two goals with super balls but we could have scored more. I said to the boys at half-time they could have been 2-2 too. It was a nice game to watch." The Reds finish with Burnley, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United. Mohamed Salah had two goals and an assist in the first eight minutes of Liverpool's 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday. Salah is now three goals behind league leader Jamie Vardy, and Liverpool's 92 points are 23 more than Man City. Jordan Henderson also scored for the Reds. BRIGHTON – LIVERPOOL FULL MATCH REPLAY Leandro Trossard scored for Brighton, whose 36 points are nine clear of the bottom three with four matches to play (The 18th and 19th place sides do have a match each in hand). [ MORE: Premier League summer schedule ] Liverpool's 30 wins through 34 outings is a Premier League record and Jurgen Klopp's men are chasing several PL records. The Reds finish with Burnley, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United. Three things we learned1. Salah somehow under the radar: Look, the Egyptian star's 32-goal league season was an outlier. Not a lot of guys consistently hit 25, let alone the 30 mark in the Premier League. But Salah has rather quietly put together another amazing season with 19 goals and nine assists in PL play plus another four and three in cup competitions. Salah is one assist of joining the a small group of players to get double digit league goals and assists in a top five European league this season. While it's become sexy to praise Sadio Mane as the Reds' top winger, Salah has been just as good. He could've had another goal in the 53rd but Mat Ryan made a fine intervention at close range. If Salah is under the radar, it's because Liverpool has spread the wealth this season and had so many heroes in close matches. But boy, oh boy, is he their best weapon. 2. Lamptey shows glimpses, then youth: The sample size is very small, but 19-year-old Chelsea outcast Tariq Lamptey has played well at right back in most of his outings for Brighton since the return from the coronavirus pause. Lamptey was at blame for Liverpool's third goal in both the chance conceded and actual finish from Salah, but the $4 million January buy looked well worth the price tag in a terrific first half at the Amex. 3. Seagulls still missing final ball: Brighton produced four big chances in the game to Liverpool's two, but only put one in the back of the net (SofaScore). That's sadly been par for the course this season, as Brighton's style has been worthy of a top half place. Brighton entered the day with seven fewer goals than its expected goals total. Only Everton, Watford, and Norwich have been less fortunate. Man of the Match:Salah. Brighton – Liverpool recapSalah had a goal and an assist within 500 seconds of kickoff. The Egyptian took a feed from Naby Keita to score off a Davy Propper giveaway and then set up Henderson's second to have the Seagulls' heads spinning early. Brighton found a chance in the 19th but Neco Williams recovered with a slide to block Leandro Trossard from slotting a point-blank goal. The Seagulls pulled within one just before halftime when in-form youngster Tariq Lamptey swept a cross into the mix for Trossard to punch home. [ VIDEO: Premier League highlights ] Salah could've had it 3-1 at one end but Brighton's Dan Burn asked the Egyptian to hold his drink with a butchered wide-open shot at the back post in the 60th minute. Jurgen Klopp didn't like the close score, and brought on Fabinho, Andy Robertson, and Sadio Mane in the second half. One of the players he removed, Naby Keita, had a strong hour before departing the contest. Henderson almost produced a third Liverpool goal after a rare Lamptey error spring a chance that took a wicked turn off Dale Stephens. The Reds made it 3-1 off the ensuing corner, Salah's clinical header in front of Lamptey. Henderson limped off for Liverpool late in the contest. Ryan denied Salah a hat trick in stoppage time and the Egyptian headed over the bar at the final whistle. He could've had five. Follow @NicholasMendolaChris Wilder and Sheffield United continue to live the dream in the Premier League. [ MORE: New PL TV schedule ] Their 1-0 win against Wolves on Wednesday, courtesy of a last-gasp winner from John Egan, made it back-to-back home wins after beating Tottenham last week and the Blades are still in the hunt for Champions League qualification with four games to go. ProSoccerTalk spoke to a delighted Wilder after the game and simply asked: did this tight win against Wolves sum up everything that's been great about Sheffield United's return to Premier League this season? "I think so. We like to think we've brought something in terms of our attitude and our performances to get the results that we've got," Wilder said. "We had a stretched squad and really had to dig in to get a result. I don't think you get the result and the performance tonight if you haven't got something with the ball and I think we did have something with the ball and out of it everybody did a job and tried to stop a very, very talented side from gaining momentum and dominating us. Second half, especially, we looked and it felt like we were really desperate to go and get a winner. Regardless of how late its come, we've been rewarded for that attitude." That attitude, skill and desire has Sheffield United four points off a potential Champions League place with four games to go. After a bad start to the restart they've taken seven points from their last three games and sit in seventh place in the table. Does this win, one that Wilder called the biggest since he's been at the club, mean the Champions League is still in reach? "We've never felt like anything is within our grasp. All we've looked at is the next result. We shouldn't be anywhere near the position we are in but we are for a reason because we get our heads down, take a defeat on the chin and come roaring back," Wilder told ProSoccerTalk. "As I said, it was a very chastening afternoon at Old Trafford recently and the reaction is not a surprise to me. It has to be that way right the way through. Please don't tell me the fixture list because I know it and I don't want to think about it too much tonight!" They have Chelsea, Leicester City, Everton and Southampton left to play and four wins from that lot could see them sneak fifth place which may be a Champions League spot depending on whether or not Man City's UEFA ban is upheld. The Blades are in dreamland and at this point they are well on track to qualify for the Europa League and that would be a phenomenal achievement. Following Egan's stoppage time winner against Wolves, Wilder roared down the touchline in celebration towards The Kop. There were obviously no fans in attendance but the local lad who is managing the club he supports summed up that moment and how proud he was of the win against a fellow Champions League hopeful, as they've come a long way since League One when he took charge in 2015. "You take yourself out of the situation regarding 30,000 fans of our own supporters. I don't think I need to explain how much we've missed them. I'm delighted and proud of the performance," Wilder added. "I've got to say, on the second half we've nicked a tight game through an absolute will to go and win. Good play, good defending, energy and effort. Right up there in terms of our performances, if you put everything down in terms of the team is stretched, quick turnaround of games, key players not being available, some really tired bodies, some boys are not 100 percent fit. The quality of the opposition and the position of the club in the league. What the other team has got. I think that is right up there in terms of performance and result."
Coming off the back of one of their best victories of the season, Wilder spared a thought for his fellow Sheffield United fans watching across the world as their team aim to complete a fairytale season in style. "We're just enjoying it and hopefully our supporters are enjoying. I'm in a privileged position, being a Sheffield United supporter as well as the manager," Wilder said. "If I was sat in my favorite pub tonight watching that as a Sheffield United fan, I would have really enjoyed that. Hopefully they have done." Wilder kept repeating that Sheffield United have no right to be fighting for European qualification and should be in the relegation battle instead. One reporter asked him why he thought they were surpassing all expectations? With his dry Yorkshire whit, this was Wilder's brilliant response. "I don't know. I am scratching my head! Here's one for you: try and keep the ball out of one goal and try and go put it in the other. That middle bit, don't worry about it too much," Wilder laughed. Nani provides superstar touch to kickstart MLS is Back tournament - Goal.com Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:42 PM PDT The age-old belief is that the biggest stars step up in tournament play. Now, the MLS is Back tournament is seemingly exempt from any form of age-old belief, given the act that it is a hastily-invented tournament made in reaction to a worldwide pandemic. There are few, if any, long-standing beliefs that will apply to whatever mayhem will occur on the field in Orlando over the next month. Still, it was somewhat fitting that a player that might just be the biggest name playing in MLS today kickstarted that tournament with a last-gasp winner and, ultimately, a memorable moment to give this competition some life. In a match that was certainly overshadowed by everything going on off the field, Wednesday night's tournament-opening clash between Orlando City and Inter Miami was won by a late winner from Nani, who fired home in the seventh minute of stoppage time to give the hosts a tournament-opening win. It wasn't the most awe-inspiring match nor the most watchable, but thanks to Nani's magic, it was one that saw Orlando strike the first blow against their newfound rivals. Wednesday's match, in many ways, was put on the backburner due to all of the things that existed outside of it. The MLS bubble is still figuring out how to deal with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with one team, FC Dallas, already withdrawing, and another, Nashville SC, perhaps soon to follow. Meanwhile, the start of the match saw the focus turn towards the Black Lives Matter movement as players representing every MLS club gathered for an emotional display. Eventually, though, soccer was played and there was some form of normalcy for a few minutes. It was hard to know what to expect but, by and large, the teams provided a scrappy, back-and-forth match. There were moments where it looked like you were watching teams that hadn't played in four months, but there were also moments where this felt like a game. After a fairly quiet first half, the first of those moments came from Inter Miami, who opened the second half with a perfectly-worked team goal. It was the second goal in the team's short history, with Juan Agudelo stabbing home a cross from Victor Ulloa to give Miami the lead. Shortly after, though, the life was sucked out of the already crowd-less stadium. Following an elbow from Orlando City forward Dom Dwyer, Inter Miami defender Andres Reyes went down to the ground, visibly struggling to breathe. The defender was in obvious pain for several minutes, with a delayed medical response leading to a scary situation. By the time Reyes was carted off the field, the excitement from Agudelo's goal was gone and an already emotional night reached a new level. — Goal (@goal) July 9, 2020 To that point, Nani had been held relatively quiet. Orlando had fared well, maintaining a bulk of the ball, but had done little with it. That was until the 70th minute when the former Manchester United star provided his first moment of magic. After beating his man down the left side, Nani drove towards the goalline and whipped in a cross. That cross weaved its way through the box and towards a sliding Chris Muller, who tapped home the equalizer. That turned out to be a mere warm-up for the Portuguese star, who then scored the game-winner deep into the stoppage time caused by Reyes' injury. It wasn't a vintage Nani goal or some otherworldly display. Rather, it was a case of right place, right time for Nani, who pounced on a loose ball in the box and rifled a shot past Luis Robles to seal Orlando's victory. It was exactly the result that MLS would have wanted, even if some of the steps towards getting there weren't ideal. MLS is the first men's league back in action in the U.S., giving the league a unique spotlight that doesn't often exist. While the pregame solidarity will likely be the overarching talking point, Nani scoring a stoppage-time winner is surely a fitting start to a tournament that promises to provide the unexpected. There are still plenty of questions to be answered, especially as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact play. And there are still plenty of games to be played, hopefully, as the focus will at some point turn towards soccer and the normalcy that comes with it. This match was just the start of a tournament and rivalry that MLS hopes will get better as it goes along. At some point, these two teams will meet in a venue and scenario worthy of the occasion. Wednesday's clash was simply a unique and unforeseen beginning, one that saw a global star celebrate a tournament-opening win in a lifeless stadium. Nani and Orlando came out on top on this warm night at Disney, even if no one was there to see it. Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Robert Redfield, said Wednesday there's no evidence that children drive the spread of the coronavirus. But that's likely because the U.S. hasn't tested enough kids to know one way or the other. "We really don't have evidence that children are driving the transmission cycle of this," Redfield said at a White House Task Force briefing to address school reopenings. It's a point that was also cited at a White House event Tuesday on school reopenings by American Academy of Pediatrics President Sally Goza, who said, "Children are less likely to become infected and they are less likely to spread infection." But there's not enough data to arrive at that conclusion, White House health advisor Dr. Deborah Birx said later in the briefing on Wednesday. She said U.S. data is incomplete, because the country has not been testing enough children to conclude how widespread the virus is among people younger than 18 and whether they are spreading the virus to others. The question of whether kids might be a driver of transmission is key, especially as local officials decide whether and how to reopen schools in the fall. President Donald Trump has been mounting pressure on officials to reopen schools for in-person learning in the fall even as the country grapples with the largest outbreak in the world. And while kids appear to be less likely to get severely sick from Covid-19, their role in the broader spread of the virus is unknown. "I think it really comes to the evidence base of what do we have as far as testing in children," Birx said Wednesday, addressing a question about whether kids spread the virus. "So if you look across all of the tests that we've done, and when we have the age, the portion that has been the lowest tested portion is the under-10-year-olds." Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), center, speaks during a White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. Joshua Roberts | Bloomberg | Getty Images Testing resources have been tight in the U.S. since the first Covid-19 patient in the U.S. was identified in late January. As a result, severely sick people and those who have symptoms have been prioritized to be tested. CDC data indicates that younger and otherwise healthy people are less likely to become sick or develop Covid-19 symptoms, so the U.S. hasn't tested many of them, Birx said. "Remember, early on, we said test if you have symptoms and now we know that if you're under 18, the majority of you don't have symptoms," Birx said, explaining the lack of data on children in the U.S. "Our data is skewed originally to people with symptoms, and then skewed to adults over 18, so we are looking very closely into that category by using our antibody test." Antibody tests are used to determine whether someone has previously been infected with the coronavirus. Large-scale antibody tests are used to determine how prevalent the virus has circulated throughout a given community. They have been used by scientists to study how many people, both with and without symptoms, have been infected with the virus in hard-hit cities like New York. Representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were not immediately available to answer CNBC's inquiry on whether the agency is conducting a widespread antibody survey among minors. While proponents of aggressively reopening schools say the coronavirus does not present a major health risk to most kids, others worry that kids in packed school buildings could become infected and spread the virus to parents, who may be more susceptible to severe illness. White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, who was not present at Wednesday's briefing, has previously said that even though children don't appear to be as vulnerable as older people, kids can still become extremely sick and even die from Covid-19. "Even though the incidence is less of serious complications, we are now getting multiple examples of young people who are getting sick, getting hospitalized and some of them even requiring intensive care. The death rate is lower. I admit that," Fauci said during a livestreamed event with Democratic Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama. "Even if you do not get any symptoms and you do perfectly well, by getting infected, by allowing yourself to get infected because of risky behavior, you are part of the propagation of the outbreak, so you are part of the problem," he added. Mandel Ngan | AFP | Getty Images The inconclusive remarks come as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on local officials to reopen schools even as the U.S. continues to report record-breaking spikes in daily new cases. Earlier Wednesday, Trump tweeted that he disagrees with the CDC's guidelines on reopening schools safely in the fall, calling them tough and expensive. Vice President Mike Pence said at the briefing Wednesday the agency will release revised guidelines in the coming weeks. The CDC published guidelines in May for what schools ought to consider in how to bring students back into buildings. The guidance recommends more frequent and intensive cleanings, distancing students, closing communal areas and more. That could mean asking schools to hire more staff and invest in re-fitting school buildings, which could weigh especially heavily on districts with less funding. Trump's tweet about the guidelines comes one day after he vowed to pressure state officials and educators into reopening schools — even as several states continue to grapple with rapidly expanding outbreaks. "We're very much going to put pressure on the governors and the schools to reopen," Trump said at a White House event Tuesday on school reopenings. "Open your schools in the fall," the president told state officials and school teachers in attendance. Schools across the country closed early for the year when the virus hit the U.S. hard in March, moving from in-person learning to distance, or virtual, learning. However, educators have emphasized that virtual learning is disruptive to student growth and many students depend on their schools as a safe environment and source of meals. Bi Actress Javicia Leslie Cast as the First Black Batwoman - Advocate.com Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:48 PM PDT There's a new Batwoman in town, and her name is Javicia Leslie! According to a report from Variety, the fan-favorite superhero series from the CW cast the 33-year-old bisexual actress as the show's new lead, taking over the reins from Ruby Rose, who left the show earlier this year. "I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community," Leslie, who was previously known for her role in CBS' God Friended Me, told the trade publication in a statement when the news of her casting broke. Instead of being recast as Ruby's previous character Kate Kane, Variety is reporting that Leslie will be playing the role of a new series lead named Ryan Wilder. While the thought of losing one of TV's still too few lesbian characters is a tough one, especially since Kate Kane is such a beloved comic name, you don't have to worry about whether or not the show is still going to be queer AF. "She's likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed," a now-deleted casting notice said, describing the Ryan Wilder character. "With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today, reformed and sober, Ryan lives in a van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk from an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly disciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero." Ever since the unexpected news of Ruby Rose's departure from the CW's latest Arrowverse series broke back in May, the fate of the show has been up in the air, so it's nice for Batwoman stans to get some majorly needed good news amidst all this chaos. And we can't wait to see Javicia rock the iconic Batwoman suit and kick some bad guy ass! Congrats Javicia! Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:08 PM PDT WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump ramped up his pressure campaign to get public schools to fully reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic, tweeting Wednesday that he may withhold federal funding from schools that do not resume in-person classes this fall.
The tweet was the latest step in an administration-wide effort to convince schools nationwide that the risks of not reopening for in-person classes outweigh those posed by the coronavirus pandemic, which has reached record levels across the country in recent weeks. The lion's share of school funding in America comes from states and municipalities, and not from the federal government. Nonetheless, the White House is exploring ways to use the next coronavirus relief bill to tie the slice of school funding that does come from Washington to the pace of different schools' reopenings. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence confirmed that the Trump administration is looking to the upcoming Phase 4 coronavirus relief bill as a potential way to exert leverage over schools. "As we work with Congress on the next round of state support, we're going to be looking for ways to give states a strong incentive and encouragement to get kids back in school," said Pence. Shortly after Trump's first tweet about defunding schools, the president pivoted to attacking his own administration's health guidelines for reopening schools, calling them tough, expensive and impractical. But instead of laying out a plan to enable schools to meet the existing CDC guidelines, Pence said that next week the CDC will "be issuing five new documents." These documents will include new guidelines on preparing communities for school reopenings, as well as "decision making tools for parents and caregivers," and "symptom screening considerations" for students and teachers. "As the president said today, we just don't want the guidance to be too tough," Pence told reporters. "That's why the CDC will be issuing more guidance going forward, because we know each school system has unique capabilities and different facilities." Reopening schools is also a key component of helping the U.S. economy get back on solid footing after record breaking job losses this spring. More than 50 million children attend school in the United States, and the near blanket closures of schools and daycare centers in March and April forced millions of parents to become teachers overnight, often on top of holding down their own full-time jobs. But with the traditional start of the school year just weeks away, there are still few concrete plans in place on either the state or the federal level to help schools determine how best to reopen safely. And now, with daily rates of new coronavirus cases soaring, parents and educators are growing increasingly anxious about whether there is any way to make in-person school safe enough to convince both students and teachers to return to the classroom. PushbackThe president's threat to cut off school funding and his subsequent attack on the CDC prompted a swift rebuke from governors and educators, who have been saying for months that more federal funding will be needed if schools are to safely reopen in the fall. On Wednesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo also dismissed the idea that Trump has the legal authority to require schools, which are controlled at the state and local level, and not the federal level, to reopen. "This has been there, done that. School reopenings are state decisions. Period," Cuomo said at a press conference. "That is the law. That is the way we're going to proceed. It's not up to the president of the United States." But while Trump lacks the authority to force schools to reopen, when it comes to providing additional money for schools, that authority rests firmly with Congress. The nation's second largest teachers union announced the launch Wednesday of a $1 million ad campaign aimed at lobbying Congress to approve additional funds to help schools prepare for the demands of reopening in the midst of a pandemic that shows no sign of abating. "We can't reopen the economy without reopening schools, and we can't reopen schools without the resources to do so safely," said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, which sponsored the ad campaign. "Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos demanding schools reopen but failing to produce a plan or the resources required is not doing what kids and educators need," Weingarten said. On Capitol Hill, there is growing support for including additional funds for schools in the next coronavirus relief bill, which is expected to pass later this month. "The surest step back to normalcy in our country is when 70-75 million college and high school and elementary school students go back to school," Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Senate committee that oversees education, said in a late June appearance on CNBC. "If we need more money for that, I'm for that." Trump's rift with health expertsDespite Pence's effort to downplay the severity of Trump's threats on Wednesday, the president's tweets nonetheless represent an escalation of Trump's battle with his own health experts over how to reopen the country. Earlier this week, Trump directly contradicted the nation's premier infectious disease specialist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is also a key member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. "The current state [of the virus spread] is really not good," Fauci said Tuesday on Facebook Live. "We are still knee deep in the first wave" of Covid-19 infections, he added. When asked later in the day about Fauci's assessment of the current state of the pandemic, Trump replied, "I disagree with him." "I think we are in a good place," the president said in an interview with the "Full Court Press" show. "We've done a good job. I think we are going to be in two, three, four weeks ... I think we are going to be in very good shape." For much of the day Tuesday, Trump and other top officials, including Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, hosted a series of conference calls and public events to push for school reopenings. "Ultimately, it's not a matter of if schools need to open, it's a matter of how," DeVos said during a conference call with the nation's governors. "School[s] must reopen, they must be fully operational." Partial reopenings that combined in-person classes with online learning were unacceptable, she said. Speaking at a White House event Tuesday afternoon, Trump laid out his plan to mount a pressure campaign on schools to reopen. "We're very much going to put pressure on governors and everybody else to open the schools, to get them open. It's very important. It's very important for our country," said the president. "It's very important for the well-being of the student and the parents. So we're going to be putting a lot of pressure on: Open your schools in the fall." Speaking at that same White House event, Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listed several of the most basic safety measures the CDC recommends that schools adopt in order to safely reopen. They included reconfiguring classrooms to keep students at least 6 feet apart, closing common areas and updating ventilation systems. It was unclear Wednesday exactly how the five new documents Pence said the CDC plans to release next week will impact or overlap with the existing guidelines. Arrowverse's New Batwoman Actress: Who Is Javicia Leslie? - Screen Rant Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:48 PM PDT Who is Javicia Leslie, aka the new star of Batwoman? The first season of Batwoman had barely finished before Ruby Rose announced her departure, the most dramatic casting shake-up in the history of the Arrowverse to date. Viewers initially assumed the character of Kate Kane would be recast - joining a long list of characters who've been replaced in the franchise - but soon learned that wouldn't be the case. Batwoman 2.0 will be a brand new character, identified as "Ryan Wilder," a former drug-runner who masks her pain with bad habits. According to the official description, Ryan Wilder will be the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. After weeks of speculation, The CW has confirmed the part will be played by Javicia Leslie, a young actress who is making her superhero debut as the next member of the Bat-family. But who is she really? Continue scrolling to keep reading Click the button below to start this article in quick view. Javicia Leslie was born in Augsburg, Germany, but grew up in Maryland. She did a little bit of work in Maryland - mostly commercials, directing a play, and hosting a live music show - but she decided she wanted more from life. So Leslie moved to Los Angeles in 2012, and within a few years she'd landed her first guest star role on MacGyver, and in 2017 she played a lead role in The Family Business, a film based on the book by New York Times best-selling author Carl Weber. Fortune struck in 2018 when Leslie picked up major roles in both God Friended Me and Family Business, which required her to demonstrate her work ethic by filming shows in Los Angeles and New York almost simultaneously. And during her time in Los Angeles, Leslie had settled down and started a family. As a result, she initially found her time in New York to be lonely, especially since she was somewhat in awe of her colleagues on God Friended Me. Things calmed down in her second year on the show, however, and she learned to appreciate the city. In interviews Leslie credited a large part of her change in attitude to the real friendships she'd built with her fellow cast. Leslie has something of a reputation for her physical acumen, and her partner is a personal trainer who has been giving her a lot of home workouts during the lockdown; she's also been training in Muay Thai, a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with clinching techniques. With the benefit of hindsight, this looks like good training for the starring role she's now been cast for; the next Batwoman. "I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television," Leslie announced in an official statement, "and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community." Leslie considers herself deeply spiritual, and in an interview with Afterbuzz TV she stressed her philosophy of speaking truth and success over herself.
She can now add to this list: "I am Batwoman." It's unclear how her character will be received when Batwoman season 2 begins nor how Ryan Wilder will even become the new Batwoman, but it'll certainly be an interesting story to watch. Couple uses different shoes to tell their adorable love story in viral video - Today.com Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:47 PM PDT Dr. Nicole Sparks, an OB-GYN in Atlanta, Georgia, doesn't just deliver babies — she's also delivering adorable entertainment on TikTok! In a clip that has gone viral with more than 4 million likes, the 34-year-old and her husband, Timothy Sparks, 37, use shoes to tell their love story. "Each set of shoes represents how we grew together through each and every stage of life including the challenges of balancing marriage with medical school, an OB-GYN residency and becoming parents," Nicole told TODAY. The 45-second video begins with Nicole reluctantly exchanging phone numbers with Timothy at the gym in 2009. Both are wearing sneakers. "He came up to me at LA Fitness and asked if he could use the exercise machine I was on and I told him to find another one," Sparks recalled about the first time they met. "I was always so mean to him!" But Timothy was persistent and a year later, they got engaged. Nicole said Timothy doesn't love being in front of a camera like she does, but was a good sport about making the video. And he was especially helpful when it came to costume changes. "I wore my actual wedding dress, but I've gained 30 pounds since then and it wouldn't close," she revealed. "Timothy is an engineer so he rigged up something with hair ties and pins. It was pretty funny." Praise for the adorable video continues to pour in on TikTok. "This is the best idea! congratulations on your amazing lives," wrote one person. Added another, "Y'all are freaking cute and this is the most creative way to tell a story, I LOVE IT!"
