Posted: 14 May 2020 11:19 PM PDT Viral clip shows life-changing method to close your cereal boxes, and here's one another tip - AsiaOne If you're one of those who resort to using rubber bands to tie up opened boxes of cereal, you're not alone. Or you may even throw out the boxes altogether, because who needs them when you can just seal the bag, right? But having bags of cereal (when kiddo only likes Honey Stars and hubby's choice is Oat Bran) tied up in a haphazard manner can make your kitchen look untidy. Here's one hack to banish the use of rubber bands for your cereal stash and make your pantry cupboard look neat and well put together at the same time. [embed]https://www.facebook.com/becky.holden.923/posts/10163890423985508?__tn__=-R[/embed] Shared by Facebook user Becky Holden McGhee, this hack shows us how we've been sealing cereal boxes the wrong way all this while. [embed]https://www.facebook.com/becky.holden.923/videos/10163890478025508/[/embed] Here's a step by step: While the post said that the hack will prevent the cereal from getting soggy, we're not too sure if that will work with the humidity here in Singapore. And there's the worry about ants and other household pests getting in as well. So the best way is to combine this cereal box hack with a hack to, you guessed it, seal the bag without using a rubber band. The hack went viral a while back, and while it originally was used for sealing potato chips, it works just as well for a bag of cereal. For a refresher, here's how to do it. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1Fsfw9F0vg[/embed] Verdict: Try itMcGhee's life-changing Facebook clip has been viewed more than 3 million times, evidently impressing many, some of whom wished this nifty trick had been taught in school. [embed]https://twitter.com/illWayne/status/1260548315374067718[/embed] But note that frequent opening and closing of the box may cause the box to lose its seal a little, leaving it gaping slightly at the top. Still, if you'd like to KonMari your pantry cupboard, this is a hack that's worth keeping. #Stayhome guide for Friday: Learn how to draw Totoro, make soya milk and more - The Straits Times Posted: 14 May 2020 11:19 PM PDT #Stayhome guide for Friday: Learn how to draw Totoro, make soya milk and more - The Straits Times 1. LEARN: HOW TO DRAW TOTOROTake time out for a video tutorial on how to draw the iconic character of Totoro - a forest spirit - in the beloved Japanese animated classic My Neighbour Totoro (1988). In a one-minute clip, animation veteran Toshio Suzuki, former president of Studio Ghibli - the production company behind the film and other animated classics like Spirited Away (2001) - gives tips on how best to render Totoro on paper. Info: For those who want to watch the film, My Neighbour Totoro is available on Netflix. 2. WATCH: A musical of Oscar-winning songsLocal musical theatre company Sing'Theatre has put on A Spoonful Of Sherman - with a cast featuring Hossan Leong, Aaron Khaled, Vanessa Kee and more - for streaming. The musical revue, created by American songwriter Robert J. Sherman, is about his songwriting family's century-long musical journey and features classic hits from films such as Mary Poppins (1964), The Jungle Book (1967) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Info: A Spoonful of Sherman 3. JAZZ UP: Your Zoom calls with local motifsStop scratching your head over how to make your workstation at home look pretty for online meetings. Local label Binary Style, known for its scarves with Singaporean-inspired themes and motifs such as the Tiong Bahru estate, Kampong Glam and MacRitchie Reservoir, is offering its prints as virtual backgrounds to use on Zoom calls. The video-conferencing tool allows users to customise their call backgrounds with photos and images. Info: For prints, go to Binary Style CLICK HERE FOR MORE THINGS TO DO 4. Covid-19 stay-home recipe: Homemade soya milkOnce you taste how good homemade soya milk is, you may never go back to store-bought ones. If you use a soya bean-to-water ratio of 1:10, you should be able to get soya milk that is thicker than what most shops sell. Add pandan leaves during the boiling process and the beverage will smell heavenly. I start by weighing out 210g of soya beans, to allow for up to 10g of wastage from picking out the discoloured ones. 5. Covid-19 stay-home guide: North Indian classics bursting with flavoursRang Mahal launched its food delivery service last week, which is wonderful news for fans of the fine-dining North Indian restaurant in Pan Pacific Singapore. The menu is an abridged version featuring popular classic dishes, sensibly leaving out the expensive seafood items from its dine-in selection that would be unlikely to get many orders. There is still a lot to choose from and servings are meant for sharing. So three dishes should be enough for four people if you add some rice or bread. 2020-05-14 22:40:30Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMicWh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnN0cmFpdHN0aW1lcy5jb20vbGlmZXN0eWxlL3N0YXlob21lLWd1aWRlLWZvci1mcmlkYXktbGVhcm4taG93LXRvLWRyYXctdG90b3JvLW1ha2Utc295YS1taWxrLWFuZC1tb3Jl0gEA?oc=5 |
2020-05-15 04:37:53Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiK2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm9yaWNvbi5jby5qcC9uZXdzLzIxNjIyMDkvZnVsbC_SASpodHRwczovL3d3dy5vcmljb24uY28uanAvbmV3cy8yMTYyMjA5L2FtcC8?oc=5 |

Life after lockdown in Vietnam: This is what it's like when an entire country reopens - CNN Posted: 14 May 2020 10:41 PM PDT Hanoi, Vietnam (CNN) — As the faint smell of smoke rose up from the sidewalk and into my bedroom, I jumped up and stepped out onto the balcony to survey the Hanoi streets. The owner of my building was burning joss paper (fake money) as an offering of good fortune to their ancestors. After a week with no new Covid-19 cases, Vietnam's government had just eased its 22-day social distancing initiative, allowing some businesses to reopen on April 23. Signs of life had already begun to emerge the prior day. Honking from the streets grew louder as more people rode around on their motorbikes, while local shopkeepers swept the sidewalk in front of their store -- all good signs the city was poised to reopen as planned. And now, domestic tourism is resuming as well, as airlines increase flight schedules and hotels re-open throughout the country. Municipal workers tend to the grass outside the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum in Hanoi on May 13 as tourist spots began reopening. NHAC NGUYEN/AFP/AFP via Getty Images Vietnam had zero Covid-19 deathsIt may seem like Vietnam got off easy, but that's not by chance. With just 288 cases and zero deaths, this Southeast Asia country acted faster than most nations, shutting its borders with China in late January and suspending visas to prevent foreigners from entering the country. (In comparison, Malaysia has recorded close to 7,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases, Thailand has just over 3,000 cases and Singapore has more than 25,000.) I arrived in Vietnam in January, before the first case hit Ho Chi Minh City, the first stop on my Vietnam trip. As I traveled north from Ho Chi Minh City to Danang, Hoi An, Hue, Tam Coc and finally Hanoi, I watched the government carefully isolate at-risk communities, contact-trace citizens and quarantine anyone coming into the country. During the lockdown, my three-month tourist visa expired, but fortunately I was allowed to extend it penalty-free for another three-months for a fee of $365 -- more than triple the normal cost. In mid-March, doctors, accompanied by government officials, made the rounds to my homestay in Tam Coc, ensuring guests were safe and virus free. Like clockwork, both morning and evening, we would hear updates blasted from loudspeakers on vehicles making their way through the streets. It seemed that at any one time, everyone knew where the most recent cases were, in full detail. A woman sits by the lake at sunset in Hanoi on May 2. MANAN VATSYAYANA/AFP/AFP via Getty Images The country's fast and knowledgeable management, paired with its strict government policies, allowed Vietnam to squash the virus more effectively than most nations. Because of this, they were able to safely and slowly lift restrictions in stages. High-risk areas like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City had tighter rules, including the closure of non-essential businesses like bars, tea houses, karaoke venues and sporting events, while gatherings of more than 10 people were banned. Though some restrictions remain in place, last Friday, Ho Chi Minh City lifted the ban on certain entertainment facilities and non-essential businesses, including pubs, cinemas and spas. Hanoi this week reopened its historical attractions to visitors, while walking streets and markets in its popular Hoan Kiem District reopen May 15. A city of smiles as life resumesWould you like some eggs with your coffee? In Hanoi, ca phe trung -- or egg coffee -- is a local favorite. After traveling north to Hanoi in late-March, I spent 22-days in lockdown lounging around my short-term apartment. On April 23, I couldn't wait to go see which restaurants and cafes around Hanoi were welcoming customers back in. The street food stalls were among the first to put out their tiny plastic chairs. The smell of boiled chicken and the slurping sounds of happy locals filled either side of Chân Cầm street. But I wasn't after a bowl of pho; I desperately needed a coconut coffee. So, I climbed up the stairs to my favorite local cafe, Loading T, and the owner's smiling face said it all. He showed me to a seat and handed me a menu. Even though I knew exactly what I wanted to order, I've never been so excited to flip through the pages of a menu before. The tables around me were filled with young people talking louder than normal, or maybe I just wasn't used to the sound of other people's voices yet. Either way, it was clear. They were thrilled to be back in a local cafe, a vital part of the youth culture in Vietnam. Residents stand in a queue for free rice at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hanoi's Old Quarter on April 27, after Vietnam eased its nationwide social isolation effort. NHAC NGUYEN/AFP/AFP via Getty Images After cooking the same five meals throughout lockdown, the street food stalls I've been meaning to try grew more and more appealing with every bolognese sauce I made. So, as soon as I could, I headed out for a bowl of bun cha. Hidden down a small alleyway in the Old Quarter lies Bun Cha Hang Quat, one of the city's best versions of this local noodle and pork dish. While walking past women squatting down next to coal fires turning trays of fragrant marinated pork and separating thin noodles into bowls, my mouth started to water. I turned the corner and was surprised to see a dozen tables packed with people hunched over their bowls, dipping their vermicelli in the warm, meaty broth. There was no social-distancing going on here. Walking back to my apartment full and happy, I noticed others doing the same. There were small groups of older women smiling and laughing on the sidewalk while men smoked from their long bamboo pipes and watched the traffic. Domestic travel encouragedMountainous Sapa has become one of Vietnam's hottest tourist destinations. Here's a look inside its newest luxury hotel, the stunning Hotel de la Coupole. These days, it doesn't feel like the city has dramatically changed. Yes, everyone is wearing masks out in public now, and only about 75% of businesses have reopened. But Hanoi feels back to its pre-Covid self. Escaping the devastation and trauma of many other places like Italy and the United States, the virus feels like a blip. But for many Vietnamese in the tourism and hospitality industry, it's been devastating. According to multiple local media reports, Vietnam lost $7 billion in tourism revenue in January-February. For now, recovery is focused on domestic tourism. On April 23, the Ministry of Transport started to increase domestic flights and trains to major destinations with limited passenger capacity. Once the government gave word that things were safe and would open again in late-April, I was already planning my trip north to Sapa to support the region's local businesses and get some fresh air. I couldn't wait to trek through the rice paddies, photograph the water buffalo and be surrounded by nature. Like many businesses, the sustainable Topas Ecolodge resort was closed for nearly two months. The rustic retreat, perched high above Sapa Valley, welcomes its first guests on May 15, and I'm excited to be one of them. Posted: 14 May 2020 10:41 PM PDT President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that the U.S. could "cut off the whole relationship" with China, claiming that doing so would save the country $500 billion. "There are many things we could do," Trump told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Thursday morning. "We could cut off the whole relationship." The U.S. and many other nations have become increasingly critical of China amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, which first arose in the Chinese city of Wuhan. China has been accused of covering up the extent of the outbreak and failing to be transparent about the seriousness of the virus. China has attempted to dismiss these criticisms and claimed that the Trump administration is trying to deflect criticism of its own response to the crisis. The president suggested on Thursday that cutting ties with China would save the U.S. money. "Now, if you did, what would happen?" he asked. "You'd save $500 billion if you cut off the whole relationship." Newsweek reached out to the White House as well as the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C. for further comment. Prior to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Trump had long been critical of China, even before entering the White House. The president has repeatedly raised concerns about the trade deficit between the two nations, as the U.S. historically has imported significantly more from the Asian nation than it has exported to the country. This spurred Trump to add tariffs to hundreds of billions of Chinese goods starting in mid-2018, which led China to respond in kind. The situation escalated into a trade war that analysts have estimated cost the U.S. hundreds of thousands of jobs and forced American importers to shell out billions more than they would have to pay tariffs. But that situation appeared to be resolving in mid-January, with the signing of a new phase one trade agreement. Now as the U.S. has become the nation in the world with the highest number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, as well the highest number of deaths, the Trump administration has faced criticism at home for its handling of the crisis. The president largely dismissed the seriousness of the virus through February, even suggesting that it would simply "disappear." Supporters of the president argue that he acted quickly by implementing travel restrictions on foreigners who had visited China. China has faced significant international criticism of its handling of the virus, particularly due to the fact that Chinese officials initially covered up the outbreak, even detaining doctors who raised alarms about the growing outbreak in Wuhan. Newsweek also reported on Tuesday that a CIA report has assessed that China threatened the World Health Organization (WHO) in January, urging it not to declare a global health emergency. "Some people in the US failed to fight the epidemic themselves and failed the trust of the American people. But they have not made reflections of how to improve their work," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijia said on Thursday, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. "We urge the US to stop slandering and discrediting China, stop promoting relevant bills, and playing this nonsense blame game. Posted: 14 May 2020 10:12 PM PDT Now, it has 26,098 -- and the vast majority are migrant workers, many from South and Southeast Asian countries like Bangladesh and India, who were infected in crowded dormitories. Making up a significant portion of the Singaporean workforce, 1.4 million migrant workers live in the city state, mostly employed in construction, manual labor and housekeeping. Of these, about 200,000 live in 43 dormitories, according to Minister of Manpower Josephine Teo. Each dorm room houses about 10 to 20 residents. They share toilet and shower facilities, eat in common areas, and sleep just feet away from each other. It's nearly impossible to conduct social distancing -- the consequences of which became clear in April when Singapore began recording upwards of 1,000 new cases a day. Authorities scrambled to respond, locking down the dorms and relocating infected residents. But a month later, Singapore is still struggling to contain the dorm clusters, with at least 23,758 infected dormitory residents. As the rest of Singaporean society prepares to slowly resume normal life, migrant workers remain locked down in their cramped living quarters until June 1. How it all went wrongThe novel coronavirus, which was first reported in mainland China in December, had spread to nearby Asian countries by the middle of January. Throughout February and March, when places like Hong Kong and Thailand were battling cases, and even facing second waves of infection, Singapore's numbers stayed relatively low -- gaining praise internationally as an example of a country that got it right. But its initial wave of widespread testing appears to have missed one key community group: migrant workers. By the first week of April, it was clear something was wrong. Initially, the government locked down only a handful dorms, before moving to quarantine all migrant worker quarters on April 14. Officials took those who tested positive or showed symptoms out of the dorms for treatment. They also tried to space out residents by moving about 7,000 workers into alternative accommodation such as military camps, floating hotels and vacant government apartments. But that still left a sizable number of workers stuck inside the dorms -- unable to leave, while not knowing who else around them was infected. Zasim, a 27-year-old worker from Bangladesh, said he felt reassured by the government's efforts, despite remaining in his dormitory. He said he had been provided with face masks, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, free WiFi and fresh fruit by officials. "I feel very safe in (the) dormitories," he said in late April. "This situation is now under control." But two weeks later, Zasim tested positive for Covid-19. He is now receiving treatment at hospital. He said he isn't terribly worried, pointing to Singapore's low Covid-19 mortality rate -- there have been 21 deaths from more than 26,000 cases so far -- but acknowledged that the dormitories still hold risk of infection, and the situation isn't fully contained yet. "This virus, we cannot see," he said. "So maybe we're using the toilet, or using the shower room, and maybe we get infected. The dorm is very big, there are a lot of people in there, so it's very easy to get the virus." The scramble to contain the clustersThe government is now testing around 3,000 people a day in the dorms. Daily cases have fallen to below 1,000, a small sign of progress since the peak of the clusters, hover between 500 to 900 a day -- the vast majority of confirmed cases in the migrant community, allowing much of Singaporean society to begin relaxing. "If you look at the actual numbers of people who report sick with acute respiratory illness, that number has been coming down by the day, compared to the peak of the outbreak," said Lawrence Wong, the co-chair of Singapore's Covid-19 task force, on Tuesday. "But every day in terms of the reported cases, you will still see high numbers. That is because we are continuing to test many workers, including the ones who are asymptomatic and well. This is part of our process to clear the dormitories systematically." However, health experts warn the crisis isn't over within the dorms, and infections may continue for weeks to come. "For the migrant worker situation, I anticipate it will take another three to four weeks to reduce significantly," said Professor Teo Yik Yang, dean of the National University of Singapore's School of Public Health. He pointed to the virus' reproduction rate -- meaning how many people infect each other. A rate of 1 means each infected person transmits the virus to one other person. "If we start off with a base infection of 1,000 cases, even if we manage to bring down the reproductive rate to just 0.5, it will still take six to seven infection cycles (or serial intervals, each of four to five days), before we bring a base number of 1,000 down to single digits," he said. The rest of Singapore eases lockdownWith such low infection rates outside dormitories, the rest of Singapore has started to lift the harshest restrictions and emergency measures. "We are now in a good position to plan forward and ease some of the restrictions, allow more workers to resume work beyond June 1, and then gradually take steps to reopen the economy," Wong said on Tuesday. Some essential businesses were allowed to reopen on May 5. A broader swath of nonessential services were allowed to resume on Tuesday, like hairdressers and pet supply stores -- albeit with stringent new rules, like mandatory face masks and staggered working hours. Schools reopen on May 19. But the danger of infection looms large for migrant workers. Those in the dorms will stay locked down until at least June 1 to "minimize the risk of further community transmission of Covid-19," the government said on May 2. The health ministry said it will ramp up daily testing in the coming weeks, to cover the hundreds of thousands of workers still at high risk. "This battle against the virus is not a sprint; it is a marathon, and we are not even at the half-way mark," Wong said last week. "If you have done a marathon, you will know that the second half is typically harder than the first, so we must expect more challenges ahead ... We cannot afford to slacken."
