Tom Brady has great response to ESPN's 'My Plans/2020' meme - NBCSports.com

Posted: 20 May 2020 01:11 AM PDT

There's a patch of 4,500 square feet in San Ramon, California that has become a training ground for some of the best tight ends in the NFL.

California Strength, about a 30-minute drive east from Oakland, has trained both Austin Hooper and Zach Ertz, giving the gym's founder and CEO Dave Spitz an in-depth understanding of what's required athletically for players at that position to succeed at the highest level.

That's why Spitz is so excited about the NFL prospects of another one of his clients: Devin Asiasi.

Download the MyTeams app for the latest Patriots news and analysis

"He has the catch radius of Austin," Spitz said. "He has the body control and awareness of Zach. And he, I think, has more bend, more wiggle, than both of them. He's a beautiful combination. Plus he brings his own set of qualities. As a route-runner, he's just gonna be so difficult to defend at the next level."

Asiasi was made the No. 91 overall pick by the Patriots in this year's draft, brought aboard to infuse some talent to a tight end room that was lacking in that category in 2019.

Bill Belichick and Nick Caserio were so taken by the UCLA product's physical skills that they traded up in the third round to make sure they landed him. Moments later, they dealt up in the draft again to select Virginia Tech tight end Dalton Keene.

Together the pair could alter the look of the Patriots offense as it undergoes a post-Tom Brady transformation, and Asiasi could very well end up being the most impactful first-year player on the roster.

'THIS KID IS SPECIAL'

Spitz has welcomed former NFL tight end Logan Paulsen to California Strength to work alongside — and serve as a mentor of sorts to — his stable of tight ends. In eight years in the NFL, Paulsen has shared locker rooms with some of the league's most best young players at the position not named Rob Gronkowski: In Washington it was Jordan Reed, in San Francisco it was George Kittle, and in Atlanta it was Hooper.

Even for Paulsen, Spitz said, seeing Asiasi's movement skills in person was hair-raising.

"He understands the position better than anybody," Spitz said of Paulsen. "He stayed in the game way longer than anybody anticipated . . . Even he was like, 'Holy smokes. This kid is special.'"

Asiasi continues to work with Spitz to complete the conditioning work he's been asked to handle by the Patriots. They're also supplementing those demands by executing a weight-lifting regimen to have him ready for whenever he's allowed to report to the team's facility in Foxboro. The program is, of course, carefully tailored to Asiasi's needs.

Spitz and his team have developed software where they gather 72 different points of data through different stress tests on each athlete prior to training. From there, players are given scores to quantify everything from posture to range of motion.

"We look at what in your body is hypertonic versus hypotonic," Spitz said. "Where do you have areas of weakness and flexibility that maybe is destabilized? Where do you have areas of strength and tightness that may be too much? Trying to bring structure, balance and symmetry to the athlete is mission critical to us."

Asiasi, it was clear to Spitz after his initial assessment, was naturally gifted.

"What we look at," Spitz said, "is where do we start? What's your baseline in terms of your overall athleticism? Are you a low responder? Does your body not adapt quickly to whatever training we're trying to levy? Are you a mid-line responder or a high responder?

"Devin is what we call a 'high baseline, high responder.' This is where I start to get excited about him playing in the NFL and having an incredibly successful career because he has the ability to continue to improve year in and year out, given he's in the right system . . .

"His relative strength can come up. With relative strength — his power output or his force production as it relates to his body weight — as it improves, his speed will improve. The 4.7 [40-yard dash] that he ran in Indy, we'll be able to continue to work on his linear speed over time and make improvements on that front. His ability to create separation and the ability to use his hands, we'll be able to improve those factors. Keeping his core stable, protecting him against injury long-term, those things are all areas that we can continue to work on."

Considering his level of coordination and the room left for him to grow, the interest from the Patriots — a team well-versed in sports science, constantly searching for ways in which they can improve the athletes they bring in — makes sense.

"If you watch the film and you see him run routes in person, he is so freaking good," Spitz said. "His mobility. His ankles. His hips. His power to get out of breaks. His body awareness. Those things that the Patriots see on film are so breathtaking to watch in person . . .

There's something that's incredibly special that pops right away. This kid just has another level of command of his body and of his awareness. I just can't wait to see what it translates to in the league.

"And he's so freaking excited. This kid genuinely loves football. He loves the idea of being able to improve. He loves the idea of being able to compete for a championship. He kept walking around when he was drafted like, 'I'm a Patriot. I'm a Patriot.' He just kept saying it. That's freaking cool."

'THAT'S WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE'

Asiasi's athleticism will be critical to allowing him to adapt quickly. Whether they're asked to block some of the best athletes on the planet screaming off the edge of the line of scrimmage, or whether they're asked to attack dynamic safeties as pass-catchers, just about everything tight ends do requires high-end athletic ability.

But the moments during which Asiasi was able to flash his pro-ready traits on film were fewer and farther between than some of his peers. He served a suspension to start the 2018 season and then recorded just six catches in four games playing behind eventual Cardinals draft pick Caleb Wilson. Last season at UCLA, Asiasi took over the No. 1 role and hauled in 44 passes for 641 yards and four scores.

But those inside the Bruins program knew Asiasi had NFL-caliber skills prior to his statistical breakout.

"We just got a chance to see him [in 2018 spring practices]," UCLA tight ends coach Derek Sage explained on the Next Pats Podcast, "and said, 'This kid's got a chance to be pretty special . . . We all knew. There'd be flashes where you're like, 'Whoa,' with the way he moves. [UCLA defensive coordinator Jerry Azzinaro], who's coached with coach [Chip] Kelly along the way at his NFL spots, would poke his head into my office and see certain plays and say, 'That's what they're supposed to look like. That's what they're supposed to look like.'"

Sage added: "[The Patriots] are getting a versatile player at the tight end position, which is kind of en vogue right now kind of making a resurgence into the NFL and college football. I think he's going to be able to stretch the field vertically and stretch the field horizontally, which is something we did with option routes a lot. He's a good athlete who can sink his hips, drop his weight, and not really change his rate of speed, which I think is really what you're looking for in a tight end position which has to be up down all around and do a little bit of everything."

Asiasi's experience with Kelly — who has long favored multiple tight end looks as well as a breakneck no-huddle approach — should give him a bit of a head start when it comes to his readiness for the Patriots system, Sage explained. And when you combine that experience with athleticism, that makes Asiasi a true dual-threat player at the position, and you have an intriguing option for a team that has shown it can work with versatile options at the position.

"There was a lot of guys," Sage said, "who would approach me when they would call and say, 'I think he's the best blocking tight end in the draft this year.' I haven't watched a ton of tape on the other guys, but I've watched a lot of tape on the other guys, and I'd agree with [them]. I just think he's got that blend of he's gonna be able to do it all — or at least have a skill set for what coach [Bill] Belichick and coach [Josh] McDaniels and that offensive staff are going to want to do.

"And in this day and age of roster spots, instead of burning a spot on a fullback, you might be able to say, 'Hey, we might be able use the Asiasi kid and he might be able to keep us in 21 personnel, and if he stays on the field, that could equate to 12 personnel with another tight end or 22 personnel and multiple formations. I know personnel . . . formations . . . that's what coach Belichick and coach McDaniels have done an unbelievable job with over a long period of time."

Asiasi certainly has the physical tools to open up formations and groupings for McDaniels that might not have been available to him in 2019 due to the talent the Patriots had at the tight end position. But why was Asiasi available at pick No. 91 in the first place if that's the case?

Questions about the 22-year-old's makeup existed prior to the draft. League evaluators indicated that he could slip to Day 3 as a result. One AFC tight end coach hoped Asiasi would slip, knowing he was a Day 2 talent who'd be available at a discount.

But according to both Spitz and Sage, from what they know of the Patriots program, it's an ideal match for Asiasi's personality.

"His appreciation for understanding what's required and for getting jobs done, Devin is very good at rolling up his sleeves and getting to work," Spitz said. "If there was one team that I could have picked for Devin, it would have been the Patriots. He is going to run through walls when you tell him to run through walls. He's not a guy who is capable of necessarily being on his own and just being accountable to figure out a workout that day. He needs structure. He needs accountability. He needs discipline. In the right environment, he's just going to thrive. I could not be more excited about the fit."

Considering the opportunity Asiasi will have in New England, his physical skill set and his experience in a Chip Kelly offense, the fit could eventually have him looking like one of the steals of the 2020 draft class.

Chicago Doctor Whose Speech Went Viral Delivers Another Powerful Message to Illinois - NBC Chicago

Posted: 20 May 2020 12:03 AM PDT

Dr. Emily Landon, the chief infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Chicago Medicine, went viral for her blunt speech to Illinois at the start of the statewide stay-at-home order in March.

Now, nearly two months later, as the state prepares to enter the next phase of reopening and as many residents and businesses push for an end to the restrictions, she shared another powerful message.

Read her full remarks below and watch her speech in the player above.

"Thank you Gov. Pritzker for enjoy inviting me to join you today. First of all, I want to thank all of you Illinoisans, for being sensible, cautious and selfless in the way that you've approached this pandemic. Some of you have been sick. Some of you have lost loved ones, and many of you have lost jobs. But I know a lot of you will also look back on this and wonder why we had to stay at home since nothing awful happened. But like I said in March, this exactly is the mark of success. It's what a flat curve looks like. It's not perfect. Still, every person with COVID passes it along to someone else who has who will get COVID. That means our case counts and hospital loads stay stable and somewhat predictable. We would love even less transmission, but this virus is tricky and even keeping things flat has required huge sacrifices.

Now, we all realize there will be no swift rescue, no knight in shining armor in the form of a vaccine or an antiviral that will sweep in and return our lives to normal before the summer come. I'm pretty disappointed about not looking forward to sitting by a pool or going to block parties and taking a vacation. We need to begin to revive some of our workplaces. And it's not without risk that we do this. Our transmission balances tenuous and business as usual could set off another wave of infections that threaten our lives and our livelihoods. We need masks, we need hand hygiene and we need distance to make this work. And we do need to be all in in order to be successful.

These cloth masks like the one I have here are our lifeline. As you know, people can spread COVID for days before they get sick, or some people may never get symptoms at all. Which means that anyone could be contagious with COVID at any time. And these cloth masks don't just help protect you from other people who may be sick - which it turns out some new evidence shows they may be better than we thought they were, just great news - but they also help to keep your own respiratory droplets inside the mask so that you can't get them on to grocery store boxes or ATM screens. But they're not perfect. And you can't wear them when you're eating, drinking. And that means we have to pair them with keeping our distance and staying home when we can and keeping our hands clean in order to maintain that tenuous transmission balance that we have. So please, never leave your house without your face covering and always put it on when you go inside another building, or if you're near other people outside. Soon, I promise it will be as natural as wearing pants, which most of us are pretty good about.

I still see a lot of people, though, that don't have face coverings on outside. And it makes me wonder if we're going to be as successful in this next phase as we have been in March and April. I think we can do it. This is a fight against a virus, not an ideology. And I know many of you understand that - a lot of you, almost all of you - and you will take my message to heart and you'll lead your families, your communities, your neighborhoods, in wearing your masks, in staying home, when you don't need to be out in order to make space for essential workers to be able to get to their essential jobs and for other people to do important tasks. When you do go out, you wear your mask proudly because it says to others that you're not giving up and you're not giving in because you're in this fight to win."

Trump told to wear coronavirus mask for Ford ventilator factory visit — but he says 'we'll see' - CNBC

Posted: 19 May 2020 11:49 PM PDT

Ford Motor Company said Tuesday that it told the White House that President Donald Trump and other people with him will have to wear masks for coronavirus precautions when he visits a Michigan factory manufacturing ventilators Thursday.

But it's not clear that Trump, who has shunned wearing a mask, will comply with that directive.

Asked later Tuesday if he will wear a mask at Ford's Rawsonville Components Plant in Ypsilanti, Trump told reporters, "I don't know."

"I haven't even thought of it," the president said. "It depends. In certain areas I would."

"So, we'll see. Where it's appropriate, I will"

Trump's visit will violate an order issued Monday by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who directed that manufacturing facilities "suspend all non-essential in-person visits, including tours."

Whitmer's spokesman, however, said Tuesday that the Democratic governor will not try to block Trump from visiting the Ford plant.

If he follows Ford's mask policy, Trump's visit to the factory could be the first time that he is photographed wearing a mask.

Ford initially did not say that it would stop Trump from entering the plant if he refuses to wear a mask.

"Our policy is that everyone wears PPE [personal protective equipment] to prevent the spread of COVID-19," Ford said in a statement.

"We shared all of Ford's safety protocols, including our manufacturing playbook, employee pamphlet and self-assessment survey with the White House ahead of time and in preparation for this trip."

After this article was first published, Ford issued an updated statement, which said, "The White House has its own safety and testing policies in place and will make its own determination" about whether Trump and his party will wear masks during the visit.

Whitmer's spokesman Zack Pohl said in an email to media outlets including The Detroit Free Press that "Ford and the UAW [United Auto Workers union] are doing incredible work for the country and their ingenuity will save lives."

"While the president's visit is contrary to the governor's order, this is an opportunity to showcase how important Michigan is to the response to COVID-19 and rebuilding our nation's economy," Pohl wrote.

Trump has resisted pressure to wear a mask even as the federal government encourages it for all Americans going out in public.

Last week, the White House told staffers that they had to wear masks or facial coverings when entering the West Wing of the building. That edict came after a personal valet to Trump and Vice President Mike Pence's spokeswoman tested positive for the coronavirus.

Trump did not wear a mask as a coronavirus precaution during a May 5 visit to a Honeywell factory in Phoenix that is producing millions of N95 masks for the federal government. That was despite the fact that workers on the production line did so, and despite a sign there that said everyone there is required to wear a mask.

Trump earlier had said that he would wear a mask if one was required at the Honeywell facility.

Pence wore a face mask in late April during a visit to a General Motors ventilator factory in Indiana, days after being criticized for failing to wear one during a tour of the Mayo Clinic health facility in Minnesota.

The GM facility requires employees and visitors to wear face masks, as does the Mayo Clinic.

Pence did not wear a mask during a visit to a health-care facility in Alexandria, Virginia, which came the same day as news broke about Trump's valet testing positive.

The federal Centers for Disease Control in April issued guidance recommending that Americans wear "cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain."

But Trump said at the time, "I don't think I'm going to be doing it."

— CNBC's Mike Wayland contributed to this report.

Historic health assembly ends with global commitment to COVID-19 response - World Health Organization

Posted: 19 May 2020 11:19 PM PDT

At today's meeting of the 73rd World Health Assembly —its first-ever to be held virtually—delegates adopted a landmark resolution to bring the world together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resolution, co-sponsored by more than 130 countries, was adopted by consensus.

It calls for the intensification of efforts to control the pandemic, and for equitable access to and fair distribution of all essential health technologies and products to combat the virus. It also calls for an independent and comprehensive evaluation of the global response, including, but not limited to, WHO's performance.

As WHO convened ministers of health from almost every country in the world, the consistent message throughout the two-day meeting—including from the 14 heads of state participating in the opening and closing sessions —was that global unity is the most powerful tool to combat the outbreak. The resolution is a concrete manifestation of this call, and a roadmap for controlling the outbreak.

In his closing remarks, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said "COVID-19 has robbed us of people we love. It's robbed us of lives and livelihoods; it's shaken the foundations of our world; it threatens to tear at the fabric of international cooperation. But it's also reminded us that for all our differences, we are one human race, and we are stronger together."

The World Health Assembly will reconvene later in the year.

Wearing a face mask, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro posed for photographs with children plucked out of a crowd of supporters on Sunday, disregarding public health advice aimed at containing one of the world's worst coronavirus outbreaks.

Bolsonaro's latest flouting of social-distancing guidelines came after he lost two health ministers in a month, both of whom resisted his fight against quarantines. Brazil's confirmed cases of the virus passed those of Spain and Italy on Saturday, making it the site of the world's fourth-largest outbreak.

Health Ministry figures released on Sunday evening showed that 7,938 new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total above 241,000, while the death toll increased by 485 to 16,118.

In an online video, Bolsonaro said he welcomed the demonstration at the presidential palace in what has become a nearly biweekly affair, with the president and supporters defying quarantines that have the support of most Brazilians.

"Above all (the people) want freedom, they want democracy, they want respect," he said, adding that Brazilians want to get the economy back up and running as quickly as possible.

An opinion poll released last Tuesday showed two-thirds of Brazilians agreed with the need for social distancing to contain the outbreak, which governors and health experts recommend, while Bolsonaro tries to open gyms, hair salons and other businesses.

On Friday, Nelson Teich resigned as health minister as he and the president showed themselves increasingly out of step, with Bolsonaro calling for a rollback of state quarantines and for the widespread use of unproven drugs, such as chloroquine, to fight the virus.

"Chlo-ro-quine! Chlo-ro-quine!" chanted Bolsonaro's supporters outside the presidential palace in Sunday, as well as "We want to work!"

Banging drums, blowing horns and letting off fireworks, the crowd created a carnival atmosphere.

Wearing a white face mask and flanked by ministers, security and friends, including a child at his side dressed head to toe in army fatigues, Bolsonaro approached his supporters, waving, smiling and giving the thumbs up.

He mingled with the crowd less than during other recent demonstrations, but he did pose for photographs with at least three young children.

Vice President Hamilton Mourao, who went into isolation on Saturday after the diagnosis of a public servant near him last week, tested negative for the coronavirus, his office said on Sunday.

Nationwide testing in Brazil still lags far behind European nations. Brazil had processed nearly 338,000 novel coronavirus tests in official labs by the beginning of last week, according to the Health Ministry. An additional 145,000 tests were under analysis or waiting in line.

By contrast, Italy and Spain have each run some 1.9 million official diagnostic tests for the virus.

[Newsmaker] Actress denies having partied in Itaewon amid outbreak - The Korea Herald

(Yonhap)

Actress Lee Min-jung on Wednesday denied allegations that she partied in Seoul's nightlife district of Itaewon after the area emerged as a hotbed for coronavirus cluster infections earlier this month.

"Lee did not visit Itaewon. Instead she went to a friend's birthday party at a cafe in Cheongdam (in southern Seoul). All she did was take a picture while dropping off a gift," a representative at MSTeam Entertainment, Lee's management company, told Yonhap News Agency over the phone on behalf of the actress.

Sports KyungHyang, a sports and entertainment publication, reported that the actress, who is also the wife of leading South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun, ignored social distancing guidelines to attend a birthday party for a fashion industry insider in Itaewon on May 9, when public concerns were mounting over the spread of new infections linked to the neighborhood.

"There probably was a misunderstanding after one of her friends posted a picture on social media," the MSTeam representative said.

South Korea has recorded over 180 cases related to infections at entertainment facilities in Itaewon. In Seoul alone, 100 infections traced to the Itaewon case have been reported as of Wednesday morning, becoming the largest cluster reported in the capital. (Yonhap)

Brazil Coronavirus Cases Surge by 50 Percent in One Week - Newsweek

Posted: 19 May 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Novel coronavirus cases in Brazil have reached 241,080, including at least 16,122 deaths, as of Monday, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. The total confirmed cases increased by nearly 50 percent (48.1 percent) from May 10, when 162,699 infections were reported by Brazil's health ministry.

At a press conference on Sunday, Bruno Covas, the mayor of São Paulo, the country's most populous city, warned that the city's health system is close to collapse. Covas confirmed that 90 percent of its ICU (intensive care units) beds were occupied, noting there was an urgent need to slow the spread of the virus, according to Brazil's O Globo via Google Translate.

Joao Doria, the São Paulo governor, was also reported to have mentioned the possibility of a regionalized lockdown. Doria previously urged residents to stay indoors and ordered all non-essential services to remain closed through to May 31.

Brazil now has the fourth-highest number of the cases in the world, after the U.S., Russia and the U.K. The country's total confirmed cases overtook that of Italy and Spain on Saturday, reporting 14,289 new cases on May 16, according to figures from Brazil's health ministry.

Italy previously had the highest number of infections outside China, where the virus was first reported, while Spain formerly had the second-highest number of cases after the U.S.

Brazil also saw a record number of new cases on Friday, reporting 15,305 infections, the highest number of daily new cases since the outbreak began. The actual number of cases and deaths in Brazil is suspected to be higher than the reported figures due to the lack of testing in the country.

"Brazil is only testing people who end up in the hospital," said Domingo Alves, one of the authors of a study published earlier this month which estimated total cases in the country were 15 times higher than the official figure, Agence-France-Presse reports.

"It's hard to know what's really happening based on the available data. We don't have a real policy to manage the outbreak. The pandemic is passing through as it pleases," he told AFP last week.

On Friday, Nelson Teich resigned from his position as Brazil's health minister following recent clashes with President Jair Bolsonaro.

Last week the Brazlian leader demanded Teich issue federal guidelines for the early use of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug yet to be proven for its effectiveness in fighting the novel coronavirus. Studies have also raised concerns over the drug's potential to cause heart problems.

Earlier this month Teich also revealed he was not consulted before Bolsonaro announced the reopening of gyms, beauty parlors and hair salons. The former health minister warned the country's hardest-hit regions required stricter lockdown orders.

Teich was reported to have resigned for "personal reasons" and the president was reported to have "had a different vision about which protocol to follow" as part of the country's response to the outbreak, Bolsonaro's chief of staff, Walter Braga Netto, told journalists on Friday.

Teich is the second health minister the country has lost. His predecessor, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, was fired last month for resisting Bolsonaro's demands to promote hydroxychloroquine and to go against lockdown orders issued by several state governments.

Bolsonaro told business leaders in a video conference on Thursday: "I was elected to make decisions. And the decision about chloroquine goes through me," also noting that his decision to end social distancing measures should be the final word.

"Just like a commander in battle: He has to decide. Are people going to die? Unfortunately, people are going to die," Bolsonaro said.

On Friday, the country's health ministry confirmed it was finalizing updated guidelines for the treatment of virus patients, including proposed medications, one of which includes hydroxychloroquine, a representative from the ministry told Reuters.

Earlier this month, videos emerged of Bolsonaro enjoying a floating BBQ, jet-skiing out to meet others on a boat and ignoring social distancing guidelines.

Brazil recorded the highest daily death toll in the Southern Hemisphere earlier this month. The country's first lockdown measures were introduced in three states a few days before then, by which time the country's death toll had climbed past 7,900.

Death tolls are feared to be the highest in the favelas, the slum areas of Rio de Janeiro (the capital of the state of the same name), São Paulo and other Brazilian cities where a vast number of people live crammed together in small areas.

The novel coronavirus, which was first reported in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 4.7 million people across the globe. Over 315,400 have died following infection, while more than 1.7 have reportedly recovered from infection, as of Monday, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.

'Hydroxychloroquine is useless': Doctors want drug for autoimmune patients, not COVID-19 - USA TODAY

Posted: 19 May 2020 10:19 PM PDT

Patients have been desperate for drugs that can treat or prevent COVID-19 – but experts on Tuesday cautioned against the approach that President Donald Trump said he is taking.

Monday, the president said the White House physician prescribed him hydroxychloroquine, a drug commonly used to prevent and treat malaria and address autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

This drug has shown enough promise on viral cells in a dish that it is being tested across the globe to treat and reduce the risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Early results of those tests raised serious concerns about the drug's safety, especially for people with heart conditions, while showing that it is unlikely to help those having the most severe responses to the coronavirus.

"The sense of most of my colleagues is that hydroxychloroquine is useless," said Otto Yang, an infectious disease specialist at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California.

Hydroxychloroquine works against all kinds of viruses in a test tube, including the flu, HIV, chikungunya and dengue, he said. But that effectiveness does not seem to translate to people – either to reduce illness or, in at least one flu trial, to prevent it.

"In clinical trials against all of those, it completely failed. I don't see any reason that it's going to be different for this virus," he said. "We need to move on."

The decision to take any drug requires considering both the risks and benefits.  In this case, doctors said, using hydroxychloroquine to treat – or attempt to prevent illness – may be substantially worse than doing nothing.

Hydroxychloroquine can cause dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities. On April 24, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned against its use outside a hospital setting or clinical trial: "Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19."

The drug can cause side effects such as diarrhea and eye problems that could be confused with COVID-19 and might add to a patient's anxiety, said Jacqueline Fincher, president of the American College of Physicians, who runs a private practice in Thomson, Georgia.

Fincher said she's had a few patients ask about hydroxychloroquine, and they were more curious about what she thought than in taking it themselves.

She prescribes the drug to patients with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, or short-term to people going on a mission trip, for instance, to areas with malaria. She wouldn't consider giving it to people who are otherwise healthy but afraid of COVID-19. Many of her patients who are most at risk for severe cases of COVID-19 are older and have heart conditions or take medications that could exacerbate the side effects of hydroxychloroquine.

'Medication I can't live without':: Lupus patients struggle to get hydroxychloroquine, in demand for COVID-19

"I'm not sure why [Trump] has latched onto this, but I think it's concerning in that you know other people will say, 'If it's good enough for the president, it's good enough for me,' " Fincher said. "We don't want people to die of cardiac dysrhythmia, because they were trying to prevent COVID. That would just be awful."

Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau in New York, said he prescribed hydroxychloroquine early in the pandemic, when there were no other options because "we were seeing people die all around us." It was worth it while the drug was being studied, he said. But in light of questions about the drug's safety and the lack of evidence to suggest it's helpful, he is no longer willing to prescribe it for seriously ill patients.

The jury's still out, Glatt said, on whether it will be helpful to patients earlier in the course of disease or to prevent infection or serious illness – but he wouldn't prescribe it for these reasons until he sees results from clinical trials.

He said he's particularly troubled by the idea of people taking the medication to prevent COVID-19 if they are not routinely exposed to people with the disease. In that case, he said, the medication would present only risk with no clear benefit.

One other concern is that  higher demand for hydroxychloroquine could deny access to people who need it to treat their chronic autoimmune disease. Fincher said she has three patients who struggled this spring to get the drug.

Michael Hogue, president of the American Pharmacists Association, said pharmacists have been concerned about maintaining access for chronic patients, and they try to ensure a constant supply for them.

Hogue said pharmacists have seen a spike in demand for the drug since the president started talking about it in March.

"There's no question that consumers are asking their physicians for the medicine," he said, or that doctors have written a growing number of prescriptions for it. Some pharmacies, especially those in areas that are not COVID-19 hot spots, therefore not prioritized by suppliers, have not been able to keep up with the demand, he said.

Patients taking the drug to prevent disease might be prescribed one 200-mg pill per day, but a hospitalized patient might be started at four pills the first day, and two for the next four to six days, he said.

Despite skyrocketing global demand, hydroxychloroquine continues to sell for about 22 cents per pill, and insurance generally covers the cost, Hogue said.

Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University Langone Medical Center, said he thinks there's so little supportive evidence and so many questions about hydroxychloroquine that it's unethical to prescribe the drug outside a clinical trial.

Caplan said he's worried that the president's support for the drug will encourage charlatans.

"When the president says, 'I'm on this stuff,' every crackpot begins to sell phony stuff online," he said.

He's also worried that people will see the president not wearing a mask, not keeping his distance from others and taking hydroxychloroquine – and will decide that they should do that, too.

"Don't substitute that drug for a mask," Caplan warned. "We know masks work."

Salah mask-wearing robbers caught by Egyptian police - Goal.com

Posted: 19 May 2020 09:20 PM PDT

A gang of thieves have been caught by police in Cairo using masks of Mohamed Salah to disguise their identities.

An armed gang of four men was arrested while attempting to rob a store on Hassanein Heikal Street, in the Nasr City neighbourhood of the Egyptian capital. All four of the robbers covered their face using masks of the Liverpool forward, who is a huge star in his home country.

The gang tried to escape after being approached by security forces but were eventually apprehended.

Article continues below

Salah is Egypt's biggest domestic sports star, and the key player for the national team with 41 goals in 67 games for his country. His standing has only increased since his move to Liverpool in 2017, and he has been in the news recently following comments from a former coach of the national team.

Former assistant coach Hany Ramzy claimed last week that in 2018, Salah told him he had received an offer from Real Madrid.

Ramzy said the offer was a good one, but that Salah had turned it down as he was happy in Liverpool. Only two months later, Madrid beat Liverpool in the Champions League final, with Salah's early injury a key moment in the game.

However, Salah's agent Ramy Abbas has since dismissed Ramzy's claims as false, saying his client wouldn't have discussed such career plans with the coach.

Salah frequently finds himself linked with moves to some of Europe's biggest clubs, with the Clasico pair of Madrid and Barcelona often reported to be interested in his services. For his own part, Salah himself recently laughed off suggestions he could be on his way out of Anfield, as Liverpool look to get their first league title in 30 years over the line.

Responding to an Instagram post from Sky Sports asking fans 'Keep or Sell?' regarding Salah, he simply replied with three laughing emojis in the comments.

Agent Abbas noted his displeasure on Twitter, with statistics underlining Salah's importance to Liverpool.

"In 2018/2019, Salah was the team's top scorer in both the Premier League, and the Champions League," Abbas tweeted.

"This season, Salah is the team's top scorer in both the Premier League, and the Champions League," he continued. "Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has missed out on zero Golden Boots, and he's not a CF."

Watford confirm trio of positive coronavirus tests after Premier League announcement - Goal

Posted: 19 May 2020 08:20 PM PDT

Watford have announced that three people at the club have tested positive for the coronavirus over the last two days.

On Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed that there were six positive Covid-19 results returned from a total of 748 tests administered to players and club staff on Sunday and Monday.

The league confirmed that the positive tests came from three different clubs, with one of the positive tests revealed to be Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan, who the club says is "asymptomatic and is currently safe and well at home."

Then, on Tuesday night, Watford confirmed that one player and two staff members have tested positive and will begin a period of self-isolation.

"Watford Football Club confirms that three people have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following testing at the training ground over the past 48 hours," the club said in a statement.

"Of those three positive tests, one is a player and two are members of staff. All three have asked that medical confidentiality be respected and, therefore, the club will not be naming those involved.

"All three will now self-isolate for seven days - in line with the protocols set out in Premier League guidelines - before being tested again at a later date.

"Strict adherence to the Premier League guidelines has ensured the training ground remains virus-free and a safe environment for the players to continue to work. The club will continue to liaise closely with the affected personnel and there will be no further comment."

On Monday, the Premier League announced that teams can begin training in "small groups" starting Tuesday after a meeting of shareholders approved the plans.

The Premier League has been suspended since March as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, with the league still eyeing a return to play in June.

Watford captain Troy Deeney has previously spoken out in opposition to plans to get the 2019-20 campaign back underway, stating that he would not put his family at risk for a return to football.

Deeney insisted he was not prepared to risk becoming infected at training and then spread it to his family, particularly amid concerns that black, Asian and minority ethnic people are more susceptible to the virus.

The Bundesliga became the first major European league to resume their season this weekend, as the German top-flight returned to play behind closed doors.

FDA appears to soften stance on hydroxychloroquine after Trump says he takes malaria drug - CNBC

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that taking hydroxychloroquine is "ultimately" a choice between patients and their health-care providers, appearing to soften its earlier advisory against taking the anti-malaria drug outside of a hospital.

"The decision to take any drug is ultimately a decision between a patient and their doctor," FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said in a statement to CNBC. "Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are already FDA-approved for treating malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis."

The comments came a day after President Donald Trump said he has been taking hydroxychloroquine daily for over a week to prevent infection from the coronavirus. He said he asked his White House physician about the drug. "I asked him, 'What do you think?' He said, 'Well, if you'd like it.' I said, 'Yeah, I'd like it. I'd like to take it.'"

However, in a warning issued last month, the FDA advised consumers against taking drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 outside a hospital or formal clinical trial due to the risk of "serious heart rhythm problems."

"Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine can cause abnormal heart rhythms such as QT interval prolongation and a dangerously rapid heart rate called ventricular tachycardia," the agency wrote in the notice. "We will continue to investigate risks associated with the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19 and communicate publicly when we have more information."

If a health-care professional is considering use of hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19, they should check for a suitable clinical trial and consider enrolling the patient, the FDA said at the time.

Hydroxychloroquine, which has been repeatedly touted by Trump as a potential game-changer in fighting the coronavirus, is also often used by doctors to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Numerous clinical trials are looking to see if it's effective in fighting the coronavirus, but it has not been formally approved for Covid-19.

Even though it hasn't been approved to treat coronavirus, doctors can give the drug to patients in a common and legal practice known as "off-label" prescribing. "Off label" means the drug is being used for an ailment not yet approved by the FDA.

Earlier Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence said he was not taking the drug, unlike Trump.

White House physician Dr. Sean Conley released a memo Monday evening, which said that after discussing evidence for and against hydroxychloroquine with Trump, they concluded "the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks."

Trump said that he is also taking zinc, and that he has taken an initial dose of azithromycin, or Z-Pak.

He said that if the drug wasn't good he'd "tell you." He said he's gotten "a lot of tremendously positive news on the hydroxy, and I say hey — you know the expression I've used, John? What do you have to lose?"

"I'm not going to get hurt by it. It's been around for 40 years," he said. "For malaria, for lupus, for other things. I take it. Front-line workers take it. A lot of doctors take it ... I take it."

Salah mask-wearing robbers caught by Egyptian police - Goal

Posted: 19 May 2020 07:20 PM PDT

A gang of thieves have been caught by police in Cairo using masks of Mohamed Salah to disguise their identities.

An armed gang of four men was arrested while attempting to rob a store on Hassanein Heikal Street, in the Nasr City neighbourhood of the Egyptian capital. All four of the robbers covered their face using masks of the Liverpool forward, who is a huge star in his home country.

The gang tried to escape after being approached by security forces but were eventually apprehended.
