Jorginho's agent opens door for possible Juventus move - Goal

Posted: 21 May 2020 12:20 AM PDT

Jorginho's agent Joao Santos insisted Juventus have not asked about the Chelsea star, though he admitted any player would like to play for the Serie A champions.

Juve are reportedly interested in reuniting head coach Maurizio Sarri with midfielder Jorginho in Turin – the pair having worked together at Chelsea and Napoli.

Jorginho has emerged as a possible replacement for Miralem Pjanic, who has been linked to La Liga champions Barcelona and Ligue 1 holders Paris Saint-Germain.

Asked about Jorginho's future and Juve's reported interested, Santos told Radio Kiss Kiss: "Juventus are one of the top teams in Europe and any player would like to play for them.

"I haven't heard from [sporting director Fabio] Paratici, he hasn't called me. Jorginho has three years left on his contract with Chelsea, he's doing well in London.

"I read about the links with Juve through newspapers and various outlets."

Santos added: "I repeat, Juventus are one of the top clubs in football."

Jorginho followed Sarri to Chelsea from Napoli in 2018 before the Italian coach returned to Italy via Juve the following season.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic halting football, Jorginho had scored four goals and supplied two assists for Chelsea in the Premier League. In total, Jorginho had scored seven goals across all competitions in 2019-20.

The Italian recently admitted he considered leaving Stamford Bridge in his first season after copping a string of criticism for his performances.

"Last year, fans were picking on me a lot because I'd arrived with another manager and, in my opinion, I ended up hearing some things that were honestly unfair," Jorginho told FourFourTwo.

"But I've never challenged the views of the fans and other people who criticised me. Quite the opposite, actually – it gave me strength because inside I knew they were wrong.

Article continues below

"Deep in my mind, it was like this: 'I'm going to prove they're wrong and work quietly like I've always done, because it's never been easy for me'.

"I've gone through moments like this at every club I've played for – this low moment when doubt can come and make you wonder, 'Should I just leave this place? Maybe there isn't room for me here.'

"But I embrace this kind of challenge and I've never backed down. It gives me more strength to work even harder, to prove to everyone that I can make it."

Former owner of east Bexar County mobile home park arrested, accused of diverting $9,000 in water - KSAT San Antonio

Posted: 21 May 2020 12:09 AM PDT

John Ripley, 69, charged with criminal mischief - impairment of public service

SAN ANTONIO – The former owner of a troubled east Bexar County mobile home park has been arrested after sheriff's investigators said he installed piping to illegally divert more than $9,000 worth of water at the property.

John Ripley, 69, was arrested Tuesday on the Class A misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief - impairment of public service, according to Bexar County booking records.

A warrant released to the KSAT 12 Defenders on Wednesday accuses Ripley of removing the water meter from one of the lots at Jasper Mobile Home Park and installing piping in two lots there last June, in order to tap into the water supply of the San Antonio Water System without paying for it.

Ripley's actions caused losses to SAWS of around $9,100, the warrant states.

Deputies make arrests, seek code violations at east Bexar County mobile home park

He is the third person associated with the mobile home park in the 6700 block of Walzem Road to be arrested this week.

Two other people were arrested Tuesday in connection to arsons and interfering with fire investigations at the property, which has long been a county eyesore and the site of numerous code violations.

Suspicious overnight fire rekindles concerns about safety of east Bexar County mobile home park

Ripley did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday at a phone number publicly listed for him.

Booking records show he was released on a $500 bond Tuesday afternoon.

Ripley, who no longer owns or manages the property, said via telephone last week that it was clear problems at the mobile home park continue.

A man currently associated with managing the property said in a separate phone call that day that the park is only about 20% occupied by legal tenants.

The comments came hours after an apparent arson fire destroyed a unit on the back side of the property.

Bexar County Fire Marshal's officials this week said they found 55 vacant and unsecured structures that were described as fire hazards.

The park's current owner, Ripley's brother, could not been reached for comment.

Trump Says U.S. Having World’s Most Confirmed Coronavirus Cases Is “a Badge of Honor” - Slate

Posted: 20 May 2020 11:19 PM PDT

The U.S. has far and away the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, topping 1.5 million infections, more than the next six largest country outbreaks combined. That is, of course, a bad thing. As a result, the U.S. also leads the world in coronavirus deaths with more than 90,000. No matter where the virus originated or how it first hopscotched across the planet, topping the charts in confirmed cases months later represents a failure of national leadership to protect Americans. Even worse, it's emblematic of an incoherent federal response that failed to equip Americans with the tools and information to protect themselves. But there's no number Donald Trump can't invert, no truth he can't unwind and repurpose, and on Tuesday the president of the United States did just that, recasting America's number of coronavirus cases … as a win? "I view it as a badge of honor," Trump explained. "Really, it's a badge of honor." Huh?

"When we have a lot of cases," Trump continued, "I don't look at that as a bad thing. I look at that as, in a certain respect, as being a good thing because it means our testing is much better." So, when you really think about it, what we're actually doing is winning the pandemic? It's certainly true that testing for and classification of coronavirus cases varies wildly in countries around the world, due to capacity and interest in sniffing out the pandemic. But Trump recasting a failure to contain the virus as a success in later counting those afflicted by that failure shows how far we've careened from reality, empathy, and accountability. At the highest level of American life, we're currently floating unmoored.

Correction, May 20, 2020: This post originally misstated the number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. There are currently more than 1.5 million confirmed cases, not 1.5 cases.

Posted: 20 May 2020 11:06 PM PDT

Do you know what gerenuks are? If not, you need to watch this video on Twitter featuring two of these "cute animals" as it has gone viral on social media. Parveen Kaswan of the Indian Forest Service shared the 46-second video on Wednesday and it has garnered over 13,000 views so far.

The two gerenuks were filmed playing around in a forest grassland while on a "date". The male gerenuk made an attempt to impress his partner, Kaswan said in the caption of his post. It plucked leaves from a plant while his partner also made an effort to do so.

"These cute animals are gerenuks. And they are on a date, male trying best to impress partner," Parveen Kaswan said in the caption of his post.

This is such a sweet video:

The internet enjoyed the video and thanked Kaswan for sharing it. "Never even heard of this animal. Thanks for sharing," a comment read. Another user wrote, "Unbelievable".

See the comments here:

Gerenuk, also known as the giraffe gazelle, has distinct characteristics with a long neck and legs, round eyes and a flat head of sorts. Generally found in the Horn of Africa and East Africa, gerenuks are also described as long-necked antelopes.

Fury after Trump claims it is a 'badge of honour' to have the most coronavirus cases in the world - indy100

Posted: 20 May 2020 10:19 PM PDT

Most people would agree that the coronavirus pandemic has not been Donald Trump's finest hour as the president of the United States.

The US currently has the highest death toll in the world and is the only country in the world with more than one million confirmed infections.

However, in an unprecedented move, Trump has tried to put a positive spin on these numbers by claiming that having so many cases is a 'badge of honour.'

During a meeting with his cabinet in the East Room of the White House, Trump pinpointed that the amount of cases shows that the US is somehow leading the way when it comes to testing.

By the way, when you say that we lead in cases, that's because we have more testing than anybody else. Actually the number of cases, and we're also a much bigger country than most, so when we have a lot of cases, I don't look at that as a bad thing, I look at that as, in a certain respect, as a good thing, because it means our testing is better.

I view it as a badge of honour. Really, it's a badge of honour. It's a great tribute to the testing and all of the work that a lot of professionals have done.

Sure, that's one way of spinning it but we doubt the 1.56 million Americans who have contracted Covid-19 since January would agree.

In terms of outrageous Trump statements, we'll admit that we have heard a lot worse, especially since the pandemic started but we're pretty sure that the word 'honour' should never be associated with the failure to act on preventing the spread of a novel virus when you already had all the tools to do so.

Needless to say, people were not impressed.

As a few people pointed out it wasn't so long ago that Trump was complaining about tests coming back as positive weren't "necessarily great" after several members of his administration staff came down with the disease.

So, don't are the tests an 'honour' or not 'necessarily great'? We dare say that by this time next week we'll have another completely different answer.

White House report criticizes China's economic policies, human rights violations - CNBC

Posted: 20 May 2020 09:49 PM PDT

U.S. President Donald Trump attends a bilateral meeting with China's President Xi Jinping during the G-20 leaders summit in Osaka, Japan, June 29, 2019.

Kevin Lamarque | Reuters

Beyond its hard-hitting rhetoric against China over its handling of the coronavirus, the White House on Wednesday issued a broad-scale attack on Beijing's predatory economic policies, military buildup, disinformation campaigns and human rights violations.

The 20-page report does not signal a shift in U.S. policy, according to a senior administration official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the report and spoke only on condition of anonymity, but it expands on Trump's get-tough rhetoric that he hopes will resonate with voters angry about China's handling of the disease outbreak that has left tens of millions of Americans out of work.

"The media's focus on the current pandemic risks missing the bigger picture of the challenge that's presented by the Chinese Communist Party," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday before the White House released its report.

"China's been ruled by a brutal, authoritarian regime, a communist regime since 1949. For several decades, we thought the regime would become more like us — through trade, scientific exchanges, diplomatic outreach, letting them in the World Trade Organization as a developing nation. That didn't happen," he said. "We greatly underestimated the degree to which Beijing is ideologically and politically hostile to free nations. The whole world is waking up to that fact."

Later in the day, the State Department announced that it had approved the sale of advanced torpedoes to the Taiwanese military, a move sure to draw a rebuke from Beijing, which regards the island as a renegade province. The department said it had informed Congress of the $180 million sale of heavy-weight torpedoes, spare parts, support and testing equipment, which "will help improve the security of (Taiwan) and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region."

While pushing back on China, Trump has sometimes uttered contradictory statements. He has talked about having a great personal relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, yet has repeatedly denounced China for not doing more to stop the virus from spreading across the world. He'll criticize China, then say he wants Beijing to sign Phase II of a trade deal and join the United States and Russia in a three-way nuclear arms control treaty.

Late Wednesday, Trump wrote on Twitter that China's "massive disinformation campaign" is intended to help Joe Biden win the 2020 presidential election.

In the past 20 years, the U.S. believed that if it opened its markets wider, invested more money in China, and provided greater access to top U.S. technology and training for Chinese military officers that somehow this would cause China to liberalize, the official said.

Instead, China is more authoritarian than at any time since Beijing killed anti-government protesters on Tiananmen Square in 1989, and the Chinese Communist Party is increasingly asserting its political ideas across the globe.

The U.S. and China established diplomatic relations during the Nixon administration.

"More than 40 years later, it has become evident that this approach underestimated the will of the Chinese Communist Party to constrain the scope of economic and political reform in China," the report said. "Over the past two decades, reforms have slowed, stalled, or reversed."

According to the report, the Trump administration sees "no value" in engaging with Beijing for symbolism and pageantry. "When quiet diplomacy proves futile, the United States will increase public pressure" on China.

The latest example of U.S. and China power competition is playing out at the World Health Organization. At the U.N. health agency's annual assembly this week, Xi joined by video conference to offer more money and support. Meanwhile, Trump railed against the WHO in a letter accusing it of covering up the coronavirus outbreak with China — and threatening to permanently halt U.S. funding that has been its main financial lifeblood for years.

China also has been engaged in a military buildup, has engaged in cyber hacking and Beijing's pledge to end predatory economic practices "is littered with broken and empty promises."

China promised during the Obama administration that it would stop government-directed cyber theft of trade secrets for commercial gain and restated the same promise in the first two years of the Trump administration, the report said. In late 2018, however, the U.S. and a dozen other countries reported that China was hacking computers to target intellectual property and steal business information.

"Since the 1980s, Beijing has signed multiple international agreements to protect intellectual property. Despite this, more than 63 percent of the world's counterfeits originate in China, inflicting hundreds of billions of dollars of damage on legitimate businesses around the world," the report said.

The Trump administration also is upset at how China continues to argue to the World Trade Organization that it is a "developing country," even though it is the top importer of high-tech products and ranks second only to the U.S. in terms of gross domestic product, defense spending and outward investment.

Under the Xi government, Chinese officials have purged political opposition; bloggers, activists and lawyers have been unjustly prosecuted; stringent controls have been imposed to censor not only media, but universities, businesses and non-governmental organizations; citizens and corporations have been targeted with surveillance; and people perceived as dissidents have been subjected to arbitrary detention, torture and abuse.

China retains its non-market economic structure and state-led approach to trade and investment, the report said. Political reforms have likewise atrophied or reversed and distinctions between the government and the Chinese Chinese Party are eroding.

"Xi's decision to remove presidential term limits, effectively extending his tenure indefinitely, epitomized these trends," the report said. "In a stark example of domestic conformity, local officials publicized a book burning event at a community library to demonstrate their ideological alignment to 'Xi Jinping Thought.'"

Chinese authorities also have detained more than 1 million Uighurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups in indoctrination camps where many endure forced labor, ideological indoctrination and physical and psychological abuse.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus Redux: Aged gracefully - Android Authority

Posted: 20 May 2020 09:49 PM PDT

It's been two years since Samsung released the Galaxy S9 Plus. That means that some users may be coming to the end of their contract and looking for an upgrade. Similarly, the price has come down so much in recent months that those who couldn't afford it initially might be looking to pick one up.

At around £300/$300 renewed or on the second-hand market, it's a phone I've been recommending for some time now for its tremendous value proposition. But let's look back at the once best of the best and find out what differentiates it from the current crop of flagship devices, and see if it's worth buying in 2020.

This is the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus Redux.

The Galaxy S9 Plus was a great smartphone, but it didn't change much aesthetically from the Galaxy S8 Plus. Instead, it was a refinement of the existing design with most of the changes being made under the hood.

There were a few notable introductions, namely a new hybrid stereo speaker setup and a revised fingerprint scanner location. The S8 and S8 Plus suffered from a really poor off-center rear fingerprint scanner which was easily mixed up with the rear camera if you didn't have the location locked down in muscle memory. This lead to smeary lenses and blurry photos along with a slower unlock time if the user couldn't feel out the scanner.

The camera was also greatly improved on from the S8 Plus with the addition of a 2x telephoto camera to the rear along with variable aperture to the main shooter. This would allow the camera to dynamically adapt its lens internals to best suit the lighting conditions. This wacky feature has since been scrapped, but it was really interesting and unique.

Despite seeming like a recipe for a great phone, the S9 Plus didn't sell well. In its first two sales quarters, the Korean giant sold just 19.2 million S9 Plus devices — a record low for the company. By comparison, the Galaxy S8 surpassed 20 million units despite the worse hardware.

This was likely due to the S9 Plus looking too similar to the S8 Plus. Even though the internals were that much better, the external changes likely weren't enough to sway anyone to upgrade. This "tick-tock" approach is something that Samsung has seemed to have left behind with its most recent Galaxy S-series devices. The Galaxy S9, S10, and S20 all look radically different from each other.

Credit: David Imel / Android Authority

What's immediately apparent, just by glancing at the device, is that the S9 Plus doesn't have a punch hole, a staple of Samsung smartphones of recent. We're instead welcomed by a small chin and forehead with curved glass sides. This layout might look out of place in 2020, but I wouldn't call it a bad thing. You get the benefit of having an uninterrupted screen, which is my preferred kind of display.

Sat between the chin and forehead is, of course, the screen and it definitely still looks good. A big, bright 6.2-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display — a staple in modern devices. Seriously, if you went back to this after using an S10 Plus or an iPhone 11 Pro, you would not be disappointed. Going back from an S20, however, is a bit of a harder task. If you're used to high refresh rate displays, this 60Hz panel might not be as speedy as you'd like.

The build materials are certainly 2020-esque. It's still got a curved glass sandwich layout with aluminum rails, there's still a multi-camera array on the back, a USB-C port is still present, it's all there. It's the same story with IP68 water and dust resistance, USB 3.1 speeds, and microSD expansion.

What is different, I would weirdly call positives rather than negatives. There's a headphone port for all of you who want one, and even a physical, capacitive fingerprint reader. That might sound backward, but remember that these are often faster, more reliable, more secure, and easier to find without looking than in-display affairs. I'm team capacitive over team in-display.

Galaxy S9 Plus Rear panel in nature

Being that we're only two years into the S9 Plus' life, the spec sheet is still pretty stout. There's a Snapdragon 845, 6GB RAM, and 64-256GB of storage. I'd say the only obvious omissions are a wide-angle camera and a big battery. If you can live without those, you've got a top device in the S9 Plus.

The spec sheet is still pretty stout, making the S9 Plus great value for money.

To refresh my memory on the gaming experience, I downloaded and played Fortnite, Real Racing 3, and Project Offroad 2. There were a few dropped frames here and there, but for the most part the S9 Plus was able to hold a steady 60fps in those titles. As for the general user experience, I found my day-to-day social browsing, note-taking, and video watching to be just fine on the S9 Plus.

The 3,500mAh battery was just about enough to get me through a full day with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connections. For reference, I had my Huawei Watch GT 2 connected and I was on the O2 UK network. Its 15W quick charging and Qi wireless charging weren't super speedy by any means, but I didn't need to top up throughout the day once. Your mileage may vary, however, depending on the age of the device, how many charge cycles it's been through, how hot it's been running, and the general usage settings such as resolution and brightness.

Galaxy S9 Plus Quick settings menu

I attribute a lot of the S9 Plus' modern feeling to the software. One UI 2.0 has breathed new life into the handset to make it feel newer than when it came out, even. The design aesthetic of the Samsung skin totally matches the curved edges and smooth lines in the hardware design.

The Galaxy S9 Plus got Android 10, which is the latest version of Android at the time of writing. That means that the S9 Plus is on the same version of Android as the latest S20 Plus, which is great. Beyond this, a further year of software updates, security patches, and bug fixes is to be expected given previous Samsung S-series phones. This, however, is likely the last platform update that the S9 Plus will officially receive.

Continue reading: When will your phone get Android 10?

Remember Samsung's variable aperture?

Galaxy S9 Plus Dual camea rear housing

So, as it's going, the S9 Plus has aged wonderfully. But, and there's a big but, a big way of telling how old a smartphone is is by testing the camera… and the Galaxy S9 Plus' camera is a bit hit and miss. It has a 12MP dual-camera array, Samsung's adjustable aperture, portrait, HDR, and night modes, and it can shoot UHD 4K video at 60fps. On paper, the S9 Plus is almost all there. The two main standout omissions that make the S9 Plus standout are a pixel-binned sensor and an ultra-wide camera lens. Both of which are very commonly found in 2019 and 2020 smartphones.

That all said, the images and videos coming from the S9 Plus look very much up to the current mid-range standard. The HDR is fairly powerful without being overbearing, and it even got the S10's night mode in an update. The software has truly kept this camera system feeling modern and fresh, despite the two years since the release of the S9 Plus.

There is a distinct softness from a lot of the images compared to what we're used to in 2020. Selfies, in particular, look a bit too smooth and lack structure. Having the night mode is great, but those images look rather soft, too. Also, on occasion, there would be a blown-out highlight. This is evident in the photo of the flower, above.

The S9 Plus' camera system, overall, is still pretty good in 2020. The issue is, though, that it isn't particularly great in either its versatility nor image quality. If one was really great, you could forgive the other. However, because both camps fall short of the fantastic mid-range camera phones of 2020, you have to wonder if it's better to go with one of those.

Galaxy S9 Plus Settings menu

The Galaxy S9 Plus has truly stood the test of time and is, by all accounts, still a very competent smartphone in 2020. Many of the scarcely found features in 2020 are in this device. If you're looking for a great all-rounder in the used smartphone market, the S9 Plus has my recommendation.

Giroud set to remain at Chelsea as club announces contract extension - Goal.com

Posted: 20 May 2020 09:20 PM PDT

Chelsea have confirmed that the club has extended Olivier Giroud's contract, keeping the Frenchman at Stamford Bridge through the 2020-21 season.

The extension will keep Giroud at the club for his third full season, having joined midway through the 2017-18 campaign from London rivals Arsenal.

"I am delighted to continue my journey and adventure at Chelsea," Giroud said in a statement. "I can't wait to get back to playing and enjoying competitive football with my team-mates. I'm looking forward to wearing the Chelsea shirt again, especially in front of our fans at a full Stamford Bridge, whenever it is safe to do so."

Giroud had been linked with a departure for several months, with the striker nearly moving to Inter in January.

The move to extend Giroud's contract will protect against losing the forward on a free transfer while also giving Chelsea a bit of stability in a market that is sure to be impacted by the coronavirus.

Giroud, who scored in Chelsea's final game before the Premier League was suspended due to Covid-19, has featured 13 times this season, scoring three goals.

However, his role became more important in the opening weeks of 2020, with Giroud stepping in to replace the injured Tammy Abraham.

"Since I have been back at Chelsea, Olivier has been brilliant as a professional and as a man in general," said manager Frank Lampard.

"He has great qualities to help the squad both on and off the pitch, not only with his talent but with the example he sets every day and the experience he brings to our young squad. I am very pleased that will continue next season."

The 2018 World Cup winner has made a total of 76 appearances for the club during his stay, finding the back of the net 21 times.

During his Arsenal career, Giroud won three FA Cups and three Community Shields, and the France striker has already claimed an FA Cup and a Europa League title since joining the Blues.

Article continues below

Giroud scored Chelsea's first of four goals against his former club in that Europa League final, which saw the Blues take down their London rivals Arsenal 4-1.

"It is clear to the club that Olivier continues to be a player we want in the squad, especially as we maintain the important balance between top-quality experience and the exciting young talent we have available, and his attitude when asked to play a supporting role has been exemplary," said club director Marina Granovskaia.

"He is a proven trophy winner who we hope can help our new generation to become that too."

Viral Vegan Influencer Makes Comforting TikTok Videos During The Pandemic - NPR

Posted: 20 May 2020 09:13 PM PDT

NPR's Ari Shapiro talks with actress Tabitha Brown, who has become a sensation after gaining a new audience on TikTok using southern charm and uplifting messages during the pandemic.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

Sometimes you just need a hug. And if you're in lockdown by yourself, Tabitha Brown has an untraditional suggestion for how to get one.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

TABITHA BROWN: You need a hug? Well, sometimes potato wedges make you feel like they hugging you. At least that's how I feel. Let's make some.

SHAPIRO: That minute-long video about making potato wedges is one of the reasons Tabitha Brown has about 3 million followers on TikTok. She's not a chef. In fact, she was an actress moonlighting as an Uber driver when she had her breakthrough a few years ago. She bought a vegan sandwich from Whole Foods that she just had to tell someone about, so she posted this video in 2017.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

T BROWN: Whoever thought of this - right now, we all together want to pray for you, honey, because what you've done in this sandwich (laughter) - y'all done set souls on fire.

SHAPIRO: She only joined TikTok in March, and something about her warmth, her humor and the affirmations she gives her followers make her a voice that people especially want to hear during this crazy time. And Tabitha Brown joins us now from her home in Los Angeles.

Welcome.

T BROWN: Well, honey, thank you for having me.

SHAPIRO: You know, my younger friends always told me that TikTok was not for anybody over the age of 30, so I stayed far away from it. And you and I are close to the same age. So how did you find your way onto this platform that is full of people in their teens and 20s?

T BROWN: Well, honey, the funny thing is I don't even know where you heard the age of 30, honey. I thought it was 20 and under.

(LAUGHTER)

T BROWN: My daughter, who is 18 - she kept telling me, Mom, you should get on TikTok. You should get on TikTok. I said, why in the world would I get on TikTok? It's for the kids, right? And she kept saying, 'cause I think you'll be, like, a good, like, comforting mom for the people on there. I think you just add some, like, really good energy. And I was like, I don't know about that, girl. I really just wanted to do the renegade dance everybody was doing. So I was trying to get her to show me and my brother how to do it.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

CHOYCE BROWN: It's at the top right here. See how that's the...

T BROWN: Yeah, but everybody else be doing renegade, renegade, renegade.

Honey, that was the first video that went viral. I was like, whoa, God. Well, now let me try to do, you know, a recipe (laughter).

SHAPIRO: Clearly, your daughter was on to something. What do you think it is that makes these young people connect so much to the spirit, the energy, the message that you're giving them on this platform?

T BROWN: Well, you know, when I first got on and saw the response in all the young kids and what they were saying - they kept saying, oh, my God. Your voice - it sounds like a hug. It helps my anxiety. You know, I feel like, oh, you're the mom I never had.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

T BROWN: Honey, Rome won't built in a day. Now, baby, everything that you want ain't gon' (ph) happen overnight, but it will happen. So take it easy on yourself. You're doing great. I love you.

It instantly to me became a responsibility.

SHAPIRO: It's so interesting that your personality and your voice are connecting so deeply with people because I understand that when you were trying to make it as an actor in LA, people were telling you to tone down your personality and change your voice.

T BROWN: (Laughter) Yeah. And you know what's crazy enough is that that started back when I was in North Carolina when I got my first agent. They told me, you know, nobody wants to hear your accent, so you got to make sure you cover that. And also, in, like, corporate America when I used to work, you know - cover your accent. You need to be a neutral person. And it just was this thing I developed trying to fit in. And when I got to LA, it was like, OK, let me make sure nobody can tell where I'm from. Let me try to be this and fit into this equation. But I'm so thankful to be free now.

SHAPIRO: What does that tell you? The thing that has made you connect with so many millions of people is the thing that people were trying to tell you to squelch and cover up.

T BROWN: Yeah, because, you know - it tells me that I was enough all along just being who I am.

SHAPIRO: So you've become known for these vegan cooking videos, but you're not a trained chef. You weren't always into cooking. How did food become your niche?

T BROWN: Well, that - it's so funny because I've always loved to cook, you know, since learning to cook. I had to learn how to cook over the phone jack (ph) 'cause when I was little, growing up in the South, you know, my mom and my granny and my aunts - they were all really great cooks. But I was a tomboy, and I wanted to be outside playing. I ain't care nothing about cooking and being in nobody kitchen.

(LAUGHTER)

SHAPIRO: So what do you mean you learned over the phone?

T BROWN: So when me and my husband first moved in together, I was like, oh, Lord - 'cause I am a Southern woman. So I was like, I got to cook for this man, got to feed him. And so I would call my mom, and I would call my granny. And I'd be like, I need to cook something. And they would tell me over the phone what to cook. Listen. The first time I tried to cook pinto beans in a crockpot, I ain't know what a crockpot was. I had a deep fryer, honey. It sound like somebody was shooting my apartment up.

SHAPIRO: (Laughter).

T BROWN: Beans got the popping in the thing. I was like, oh, my God. Oh, this is definitely not a crockpot (laughter). But that's how I learned.

SHAPIRO: So you've come a long way.

T BROWN: I've come a long way. And then when I went vegan, I was like, OK, I got to make sure my food still tastes as good as it was.

SHAPIRO: (Laughter).

T BROWN: And so I tried to make all my favorite non-vegan things vegan, and I took people on that journey with me.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

T BROWN: What'd you say? Oh, you want a little piece of fried fish. You miss that? OK. Well, let's scratch the itch, baby.

SHAPIRO: You've been doing this for a while now, but it seems like during the pandemic, it has really taken off. Why do you think that is?

T BROWN: You know, I think that I was just something that people needed. That was my prayer - is that when people watch my videos for whatever that minute is, it takes their mind off of what's going on in the world and it gives them a little bit of peace or a little bit of laughter or a little bit of joy. And I think it worked (laughter).

SHAPIRO: I think it did.

T BROWN: (Laughter).

SHAPIRO: Well, Tabitha Brown, I've really enjoyed your videos. Thank you for sharing them with us and for talking with me today about them.

T BROWN: Oh, thank you. I appreciate you.

SHAPIRO: You can find her videos with the handle @iamtabithabrown.

T-Mobile's 5G reaches 1Gbit/s, and that's just the beginning - Light Reading

Posted: 20 May 2020 09:09 PM PDT

A T-Mobile executive boasted Tuesday that the operator's 5G network in New York City recently clocked 1Gbit/s download speeds, at least in one recent test. And that connection didn't even make use of T-Mobile's lowband or millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum holdings.

Previously, T-Mobile has boasted speeds of around 600Mbit/s on its 5G network in Philadelphia, which uses the operator's lowband 600MHz spectrum and the midband 2.5GHz spectrum T-Mobile acquired from Sprint.

The operator's new 5G high mark helps to highlight the potential of 5G in general and T-Mobile's network buildout specifically. For example, network-monitoring company OpenSignal reported Wednesday that average 5G speeds globally are well below the 1Gbit/s mark in places like South Korea, the US and Australia.

But T-Mobile's latest efforts, coupled with those of Verizon and others, also highlight the complexity involved in implementing the new technology.

For example, T-Mobile's Salim Kouidri confirmed that the operator's 1Gbit/s connection – obtained in one test and not necessarily a speed customers should routinely expect – essentially combined transmissions across several different spectrum bands:

  • N41 (the 2.5GHz spectrum T-Mobile acquired from Sprint)
  • B66 (the AWS spectrum T-Mobile is using to broadcast both 5G and 4G using EN-DC technology)
  • And Band 46 (the unlicensed 5GHz band that T-Mobile is using to deploy LAA technology)

Thus, the operator's 1Gbit/s 5G connection didn't even make use of T-Mobile's lowband or highband, mmWave spectrum holdings. Moreover, T-Mobile officials have said the operator is initially deploying only 60MHz of the roughly 150MHz it now owns in the 2.5GHz spectrum band. The inclusion of transmissions in those additional bands would undoubtedly increase users' download speeds.

T-Mobile isn't the only operator clocking blazing-fast speeds on 5G. For example, network-testing company RootMetrics reported that it clocked Verizon's mmWave 5G network at a top speed of 1.1Gbit/s in Chicago last year. That's not surprising given that Verizon holds roughly 800MHz of mmWave spectrum in most major markets, which allows it to transmit enormous amounts of data.

T-Mobile, for its part, has long discussed the importance of the "layer cake" approach to 5G that makes use of lowband spectrum for widespread coverage, midband spectrum for coverage in cities, and highband spectrum for coverage in dense, urban areas. As 5G matures in the months and years to come, T-Mobile will eventually leverage all those spectrum bands in order to increase speeds and capabilities.

For example, T-Mobile promised that, within six years, it will provide average 5G speeds in excess of 100Mbit/s across 90% of the US population.

AT&T and Verizon too have said they will eventually launch 5G across all their spectrum holdings.

Indeed, Verizon today announced it tweaked its own mmWave 5G network to improve users' upload speeds. As PCMag reported, Verizon previously used its LTE network to handle its 5G customers' uploads, but is now using 100MHz of its mmWave spectrum to handle uploads. The operator said the action would improve its upload speeds by 30% – a key action as COVID-19 lockdown orders drive Americans toward upload-heavy services like videoconferencing.

But it appears news on the 5G front will continue to accelerate as COVID-19 lockdown orders loosen around the country. For example, T-Mobile's new CEO, Mike Sievert, teased an announcement that the operator has scheduled for Thursday. Company officials said the announcement will stem from promises T-Mobile made late last year as it sought regulatory approval for its merger with Sprint.

Importantly, T-Mobile is already highlighting its 5G plans in some advertisements now that its Sprint merger has been consummated.

Taiwan’s president rejects ‘one country, two systems’ deal with China - FRANCE 24 English

Posted: 20 May 2020 07:49 PM PDT

Issued on: Modified:

Taiwan cannot accept becoming part of China under its "one country, two systems" offer of autonomy, President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday, strongly rejecting China's sovereignty claims and likely setting the stage for an ever worsening of ties.

Advertising

China responded that "reunification" was inevitable and that it would never tolerate Taiwan's independence.

In a speech after being sworn in for her second and final term in office, Tsai said relations between Taiwan and China had reached an historical turning point.

"Both sides have a duty to find a way to coexist over the long term and prevent the intensification of antagonism and differences," she said.

Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party won January's presidential and parliamentary elections by a landslide, vowing to stand up to China, which claims Taiwan as its own and says it would be brought under Beijing's control by force if needed.

"Here, I want to reiterate the words 'peace, parity, democracy, and dialogue'. We will not accept the Beijing authorities' use of 'one country, two systems' to downgrade Taiwan and undermine the cross-strait status quo. We stand fast by this principle," Tsai said.

China uses the "one country, two systems" policy, which is supposed to guarantee a high degree of autonomy, to run the former British colony of Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997. It has offered it to Taiwan, though all major Taiwanese parties have rejected it.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office, responding to Tsai, said Beijing would stick to "one country, two systems" – a central tenet of Chinese President Xi Jinping's Taiwan policy – and "not leave any space for Taiwan independence separatist activities".

"Reunification is a historical inevitability of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," it said. "We have the firm will, full confidence, and sufficient ability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity."

China views Tsai as a separatist bent on formal independence for Taiwan. Tsai says Taiwan is an independent state called the Republic of China, its official name, and does not want to be part of the People's Republic of China governed by Beijing.

Taiwan open to dialogue

China has stepped up its military drills near Taiwan since Tsai's re-election, flying fighter jets into the island's air space and sailing warships around Taiwan.

Tsai said Taiwan has made the greatest effort to maintain peace and stability in the narrow Taiwan Strait that separates the democratic island from its autocratic neighbour China.

"We will continue these efforts, and we are willing to engage in dialogue with China and make more concrete contributions to regional security," she added, speaking in the garden of the old Japanese governor's house in Taipei, in front of a socially-distanced audience of officials and diplomats.

Taiwan has become a rising source of friction between China and the United States, with the Trump administration strongly backing Taiwan even in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent his congratulations to Tsai on Tuesday, praising her "courage and vision in leading Taiwan's vibrant democracy", in a rare high-level message from Washington direct to Taiwan's government.

China's Foreign Ministry condemned Pompeo's remarks, and said the government would take "necessary countermeasures", though did not elaborate.

China cut off a formal talks mechanism with Taiwan in 2016 after Tsai first won election.

Yao Chia-wen, a senior adviser to Tsai, told Reuters the chance of talks with China were small given ongoing tensions.

"We are ready to engage with them any time, but China is unlikely to make concessions to Taiwan," he said. "In the next four years there's little chance for the cross-strait relationship to improve."

HOUSTON – A viral video posted to Reddit shows a woman apparently trying to enter a grocery store without a mask and being turned away by an employee and the store manager for violating the company's policy.

The incident reportedly happened in Dana Point, California at a Gelson's grocery.

The video begins with the woman trying to enter the store without a mask. She claims she has a medical condition that prevents her from wearing a mask, and says "HIPAA rules and regulations don't require her to disclose that."

The manager offers to have someone shop for her if she doesn't want to follow the company's mask policy, but she says she has private things to buy and doesn't want to give her credit card payment information to the store because she claims it infringes upon her rights.

The woman then threatens to sue the store for discrimination before the manager provides the corporate office information for her on a card and gives her his name.

Fox 11 Los Angeles reported the woman's name is Shelley Lewis and she is facing heavy criticism online after posting the interaction at the store.
