US: FedEx to rehire 2 black employees after viral video - Anadolu Agency Posted: 22 May 2020 12:03 AM PDT ANKARA American cargo company FedEx said early Thursday it offers reemployment to two African-American workers who were fired after sharing a confrontation video with a white costumer. "We are aware of the incident in GA [Georgia] that led to the release of two drivers employed by a service provider. We're offering employment while investigating to ensure an appropriate outcome," it said on Twitter. The company added that it takes allegations of "discrimination, retaliation, or improper employment actions" seriously. A driver of FedEx shared the video on Twitter Wednesday, which went viral within hours, saying he and a co-worker were fired after the post. The driver tweeted that a customer approached them and he was cursing and threatening after the pair delivered a package and were about to leave. "People like him, doesn't matter white or any race, should never disrespect essential workers putting their lives in jeopardy especially with this COVID-19," user @Toniob38 tweeted, adding: "We just apologized but he kept escalating the situation." The video captured by the worker who sits inside the delivery vehicle shows the other worker telling the customer: "You didn't have to come out there cursing me like that." The customer can be seen standing a few meters away and recording the confrontation with his phone. "I thought you were waiting for the cops," the customer said as workers were driving away with the delivery vehicle. The alleged threats were not captured in the video. A GoFoundMe campaign, set-up for two workers with a $60,000-goal, is already about to reach $50,000. Two workers were mentioned as Antonio and Felinzay in the campaign's description. China drops GDP goal as parliament opens, virus slams economy - Reuters Posted: 21 May 2020 11:50 PM PDT BEIJING (Reuters) - China dropped its annual growth target for the first time on Friday and pledged more government spending as the COVID-19 pandemic hammers the world's second-biggest economy, setting a sombre tone to this year's meeting of parliament. A Chinese flag is pictured at Lujiazui financial district in Pudong, Shanghai, China May 22, 2020. REUTERS/Aly Song The omission from Premier Li Keqiang's work report marks the first time China has not set a target for gross domestic product (GDP) since the government began publishing such goals in 1990. The economy shrank 6.8% in the first quarter, the first contraction in decades, hit by the outbreak of the new coronavirus, which started in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. "We have not set a specific target for economic growth for the year, mainly because the global epidemic situation and economic and trade situation are very uncertain, and China's development is facing some unpredictable factors," Li said at the start of parliament. Domestic consumption, investment and exports are falling, and the pressure on employment is rising significantly, while financial risks are mounting, he warned. China has set a target to create over 9 million urban jobs this year, according to Li's report, down from a goal of at least 11 million in 2019 and the lowest since 2013. Ahead of the National People's Congress, the week-long meeting of the largely rubber-stamp parliament, China's top leaders have promised to boost stimulus to bolster the economy amid rising worries job losses could threaten social stability. Beijing is also planning security legislation for Hong Kong, which Li said will provide a "sound" legal system and enforcement mechanisms but which critics say could curb autonomy in the city. The move drew warnings from the United States, falls on Asian stock markets and calls among Hong Kong activists for protests in the former British colony. FURTHER FISCAL, MONETARY STIMULUSChina is targeting a 2020 budget deficit of at least 3.6% of GDP, above last year's 2.8%, and fixed the quota on local-government special bond issuance at 3.75 trillion yuan ($527 billion), up from 2.15 trillion yuan, according to Li. The government will issue 1 trillion yuan in special treasury bonds this year, the first such issuance. It will transfer 2 trillion yuan raised from the bigger 2020 budget deficit and special anti-coronavirus treasury bonds to local governments, Li said. Local government bonds could be used to fund infrastructure projects, while special treasury bonds could be used to support firms and regions hit by the outbreak. "The annual budget points to fiscal stimulus this year at least on par with that following the global financial crisis," Julian Evans-Pritchard, senior China economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note. But Nie Wen, economist at Shanghai-based Hwabao Trust, said Li's report indicates China will "not resort to mass stimulus that some market players have been betting on." Nie expects GDP growth to slow sharply this year to around 2% or 3% from last year's 6.1%. "This year's economic growth needs to reach around 3% to create 9 million new urban jobs," Nie said, adding that the size of the fiscal stimulus announced by Li is about 4 trillion yuan. In line with the slower economy, China will raise defence spending by 6.6% this year, the slowest in three decades, while the budget for environmental protection will increase a modest 4%. Monetary policy will be more flexible, Li said, adding that growth in M2 - a broad gauge of money supply - and total social financing will be significantly higher this year. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) will guide its benchmark lending rate lower, he said. The central bank has cut the Loan Prime Rate (LPR) by 46 basis points since August 2019, when it replaced the previous benchmark lending rate. The one-year LPR rate is now 3.85%. The PBOC has cut reserve requirement ratios 10 times since early 2018, including three cuts this year. Small and midsize companies can delay paying loans and interest by a further nine months, through March 2021, and lending to SMEs by big commercial banks should grow more than 40%, Li said. The tax and fee burden shouldered by companies will be cut by 2.5 trillion yuan this year, Li said. Tenet trailer offers more clues to new Christopher Nolan mind bender - CNET Posted: 21 May 2020 10:49 PM PDT With shades of Memento and Inception, Tenet is shaping up to be a mind-bender in the best way possible. Expect huge action set pieces, mystery and a dash of sci-fi from Christopher Nolan's latest. Tenet, which is still scheduled for a theatrical release in July despite the coronavirus pandemic, will see actor John David Washington play an elite spy, military-type operative and time engineer, somehow all at once. A new trailer dropped inside Fortnite on Thursday, and then on YouTube. It's all got something to do with a test that apparently doesn't have a lot of survivors. "That test you passed?" Martin Donovan's character says to him at one point. "Not everybody goes. Welcome to the afterlife." His mission: Stop World War III. The word "tenet" is a password that ensures people take him seriously. In one scene, Washington sees bullet holes in glass but says the shooting hasn't happened yet. If this movie is about reverse-engineering events by bending time and space, we're in for a crazy, awesome ride. Other scenes in the new trailer shows not only numerous explosions, including a very big plane, but also conversations about the importance of reverse-engineering time to change the future. So Tenet isn't about time travel, it's about the people who can manipulate time and thus future events. Maybe? We'll have to wait for more trailers to reveal clues to Nolan's sci-fi world where nothing seems to be set in stone. Actors Martin Donovan, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kenneth Branagh and Michael Caine also star. Tenet is scheduled for theatrical release on July 17, 2020. Also on a side note, it appears that Nolan will be showing "one of his iconic films to Fortnite this summer for a full length free screening for fans," so stay tuned for more details on that soon. 1,970 Indonesian crew of German cruise ships return home - ANTARA English Posted: 21 May 2020 10:19 PM PDT Jakarta (ANTARA) - As many as 1,970 Indonesians working for several cruise ships in Germany have returned to Indonesia over the past few weeks, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin. A total of 242 Indonesian crew members of the Mein Schiff 3, Mein Schiff 4, Mein Schiff 5, and Mein Schiff 6 cruise ships left for the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali on Wednesday (German time). They landed at the resort island on Thursday, the embassy revealed in a press statement that ANTARA received in Jakarta on Thursday. "This is the last repatriation. Alhamdulillah (Thank God), all of them have tested negative for COVID-19," Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, Arif Havas Oegroseno, said. The Indonesian sailors boarded a chartered flight of TUI Fly's TB 8333, which took off from the Hamburg International Airport at 6 p.m. local time on Wednesday. As of May 19, 2020, the Indonesian Government has facilitated the return of 99,543 Indonesian citizens from abroad. Majority of them are Indonesian migrant workers working in Malaysia and Indonesian sailors employed with foreign cruise ships. However, many Indonesian citizens cannot yet return home amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced countries to close borders and enforce lockdowns and travel restrictions. Among them are 808 members of the Jamaah Tabligh congregation, who remain stranded abroad, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry revealed. Related news: Hundreds of Indonesian crews of Germany's AIDA Cruises return home Over the past months, Indonesia, Germany, and many other countries across the world have been battling the spread of the new coronavirus disease. The Indonesian government officially announced the country's first two confirmed COVID-19 cases on March 2 this year. The deadly coronavirus surfaced in Wuhan at the end of December 2019, and China's lack of transparency and goodwill to tell the truth about human-to-human transmissions from the start has been blamed for the spread of COVID-19 across the world. The Government of the United States, where several people have succumbed to COVID-19, has accused the Chinese Government of having "intentionally concealed the severity of the coronavirus from the international community" (CNN on May 4, 2020). Washington has argued that "China likely cut its exports of medical supplies prior to its WHO (World Health Organization) January notification that COVID-19 is a contagion", according to a Department of Homeland Security report that CNN quoted on May 4, 2020.Indonesia has witnessed the deaths of several doctors and nurses while fighting the coronavirus pandemic. China drops GDP goal, vows spending as virus overshadows parliament - Reuters Posted: 21 May 2020 09:20 PM PDT BEIJING (Reuters) - China dropped its annual growth target for the first time on Friday and pledged more government spending as the COVID-19 pandemic hammers the world's second-biggest economy, setting a sombre tone to this year's meeting of parliament in Beijing. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang delivers a speech at the opening session of the National People's Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China May 22, 2020. The economy shrank 6.8% in the first quarter from a year earlier, the first contraction in decades, as the outbreak of the new coronavirus, which started in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, paralysed production and hit spending. Nie expects GDP growth to slow sharply this year to around 2% or 3% from last year's 6.1%. Louis Kuijs of Oxford Economics in Hong Kong said Beijing worries about excessive debt and financial instability but that Li's "sizeable overall fiscal-deficit target indicates significant policy support for the domestic recovery that we expect to continue despite the challenging external background." Local government bonds could be mainly used to fund infrastructure projects, while special treasury bonds could be used to support firms and regions hit by the outbreak. China has front-loaded a quota of 2.29 trillion yuan in local-government special bonds in 2020. Local governments have also issued 1.2 trillion yuan in special bonds in the first four months, according to the finance ministry. China will transfer 2 trillion yuan in funds raised from the bigger 2020 budget deficit and special anti-coronavirus treasury bonds to local governments, Li said.
