Indonesia also confirmed 27 new deaths, bringing the total fatalities to 1,418, health ministry official Achmad Yurianto told reporters. As of Tuesday, 188,302 people have been tested and 5,877 have recovered. | Posted: 27 May 2020 11:47 PM PDT  A white Minneapolis venture capitalist's office lease was terminated after a viral video showed him questioning black entrepreneurs using the gym in a building of which they were all tenants, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Wednesday. Tom Austin, the managing partner of F2 Group, threatened to call the police on the group of black men on Tuesday. The men are the owners of Top Figure, a Minneapolis-based social media and branding agency. They work out of a WeWork coworking space in the building and are allowed to use the amenities. Austin ultimately called the building manager, who confirmed the men have a lease in the building. He told the Tribune that his actions led to his company losing its lease in the building. ADVERTISEMENT "Should have handled it differently," he said in an email to the Tribune. "Not my job to have done anything." Top Figure posted the video of the exchange to its Instagram page. As of Wednesday evening, it has 33,000 likes. "I'm Tom Austin," the man says in the video. "I'm a tenant in the building. Are you?" In the Instagram caption, the men accused Austin of "racial profiling and age discrimination" and tagged the building's Instagram page. "As you guys can see, we're dealing with racism here," one man said in the video. Austin insisted to the Tribune he was not being racist and was upholding a building policy that allows only tenants to use amenities. He said he saw one of them open the door to the gym with a key fob and let the rest in before the group got "aggressive." He told the Tribune that by the end of the exchange, he was on "talking terms" with the men. "I said, 'I'm sorry you thought I was being racist, but I was not. If you were a bunch of women, I would have done the same thing,'" Austin told the Tribune. The incident comes just days after a video of a white Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd until he died of asphyxiation went viral. The death of Floyd, an African American man, led to massive protests in the city and calls for an investigation into the officers behavior. Stuart Ackerberg, CEO of Ackerberg Group, which owns the MoZaic East building, said he was still heartbroken from seeing the video of Floyd when he decide to terminate the lease. | Carry1st has $4M to invest in African mobile gaming - TechCrunch Posted: 27 May 2020 10:44 PM PDT Gaming development startup Carry1st has raised a $2.5 million seed round led by CRE Venture Capital. That brings the company's total VC to $4 million, which Carry1st will deploy to support and invest in game publishing across Africa. The startup — with offices in New York, Lagos, and South Africa — was co-founded in 2018 by Sierra Leonean Cordel Robbin-Coker, American Lucy Parry, and Zimbabwean software engineer Tinotenda Mundangepfupfu. Robbin-Coker and Parry met while working in investment banking in New York, before forming Carry1st. "I convinced her to avoid going to business school and instead come to South Africa to Cape Town," Robbin-Coker told TechCrunch on a call. "We launched with the idea that we wanted to bring the gaming industry…to the African continent." Carry1st looks to match gaming demand in Africa to the continent's fast growing youth population, improving internet penetration and rapid smartphone adoption. Carry1st has already launched two games as direct downloads from its site, Carry1st Trivia and Hyper!. "In April, [Carry1st Trivia] did pretty well. It was the number one game in Nigeria, and Kenya for most of the year and did about one and a half million downloads." Robbin-Coker said. The company will also invest in the gaming market and itself. "We want to dedicate at least a million dollars to actually going out and acquiring users and scaling our user base. That entails creating multiple channels and revenue points to develop, distribute, and invest in games on the continent, he explained. James Harris. Now the culinary skills of local chefs are put to work for a good cause. The effort was put together by a group of organizations that wanted to come together to do something special for the Detroit Fire Department. The pandemic isn't stopping their call to duty, so the Horatio Williams Foundation teamed up with a Detroit TV star to sponsor 300 meals for the men and women of the DFD. Lauren was with the Gunners from 2000 to 2007 as he made 242 appearances during his time with the club. His tenure coincided with a run of success for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger, with the Cameroonian fullback winning two Premier League titles during his stay. Wenger's Gunners were routinely competing for the Premier League, with Lauren saying the club's fire developed from a competitive training environment. In fact, Wenger would often just sit back and watch as players battled during intense intra-squad matches as the French manager didn't want to get between his squad's most competitive stars. "When there was a game, Wenger would say: 'Who's the ref?' Pat Rice, [former equipment manager] Paul Johnson, [assistant coach] Boro Primorac … No one wanted it," Lauren told The Guardian. "Wenger was clever – he got out of there, went to the corner, hid and just watched. Pat was the bravest and he'd end up arguing with everyone. "There was argument after argument: Freddie [Ljungberg] with this guy, Martin [Keown] with that guy, me with someone else. [Dennis] Bergkamp was a genius but he was also incredibly competitive. That's why we won." Because of those battles, Lauren says that players were able to reach a new level, with Henry's competitiveness becoming a key part of the squad's identity. | Posted: 27 May 2020 06:47 PM PDT  A Minneapolis venture capitalist's office lease has been terminated after a video went viral showing him asking a group of black entrepreneurs if they were tenants of the building and thus allowed to use its gym. In the video posted Tuesday night, Tom Austin, who is white, said he was going to call 911 on the group. (He ended up calling the building's property manager instead.) On Wednesday afternoon, Austin said he messed up. He had an office at the Mozaic East building in Uptown for his company, F2 Group. The office building is owned by the Ackerberg Group. "Should have handled it differently," he said in an e-mail. "Not my job to have done anything." Top Figure, a Minneapolis-based social media and branding agency, posted the video to its Instagram account saying that it showed racial profiling in action. The company is a member of the WeWork co-working space in the building. The men were working out in the gym in the building when Austin confronted them. "I'm Tom Austin," the man says in the video. "I'm a tenant in the building — are you?" The men in the group, who are black, respond that they are all tenants. Austin demands to know which office they work in. They respond that they don't have to tell him. He says he's going to call 911. "As you guys can see, we're dealing with racism here," one of the voices says in the video. The men who work at Top Figure could not be reached for comment. Austin, who was a vocal critic of renaming Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska, said in an interview Wednesday that he regretted saying anything to the men and insisted he was not being racist. He said the building had recently sent out an e-mail reminding them that only tenants were allowed to use the gym and other amenities in the building. He said he was suspicious that the men were not all tenants because he saw one person in the group of five men using his key fob to let others into the bathroom and other doors. He said they became "aggressive" when he confronted them. "There's a whole bunch of people who don't appear to be" part of the building using the gym, he is heard saying on the phone in the video. He said a maintenance person ended up coming and talking to the group and then left. In its social media post, Top Figure noted that it pays rent to work in the building. It also said the entrepreneurs do not often speak out about the racial profiling and age discrimination they face. "We are sick and tired of tolerating this type of behavior on a day-to-day basis, and we feel that we had to bring light onto this situation," they wrote. The social post generated more than 3,000 comments and more than 20,000 likes by Wednesday afternoon and also was being widely shared on Twitter. It comes in the same week of two other racially charged viral videos, one of which showed a white woman in New York City calling the police on a black man who asked her to follow the rules and leash her dog in Central Park. She was subsequently fired from her job. The other showed a white police officer in Minneapolis kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, who is black, and who died shortly after, sparking protests in the city on Tuesday night. Stuart Ackerberg, CEO of Ackerberg Group, which owns the Mozaic East building, said he was already feeling heartbroken upon seeing the Floyd video when he saw the video of the confrontation at the gym in his own building. "My heart hurts," he said. "This is not how we do business. … I'm alarmed by what I saw." He said that two WeWork members had used their key fobs to access the gym on Tuesday night. And he assumes the other people in the Top Figure group also were employees. "It appears they had every right to be there and to use that amenity," he said. A tally from Johns Hopkins University showed 100,047 deaths as of Wednesday evening. More than 5.6 million people have contracted the coronavirus across the globe, with the U.S. accounting for roughly 30% of total cases. The U.K. has recorded the second-highest number of coronavirus fatalities, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. | T-Mobile reportedly close to hiring a new CFO - Light Reading Posted: 27 May 2020 05:44 PM PDT T-Mobile's CEO is in the final stages of hiring a replacement for the operator's longtime CFO Braxton Carter, according to a new report from the Wall Street analysts at Cowen. Citing meetings with company officials, the Cowen analysts wrote that T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert is "far along" in the hiring process, and is considering both internal and external candidates. They speculated that Susan Loosmore, who was recently named T-Mobile's new EVP of financial planning and analysis, reporting to Carter – is likely a top candidate for the job. That Carter is reportedly departing the operator doesn't come as much of a surprise. His employment contract with the company ends July 1, and GeekWire noted he's eligible for a cash bonus of $7.5 million on his departure.  T-Mobile's Braxton Carter joined the company in 2013 via its acquisition of MetroPCS. (Source: T-Mobile) Carter addressed the situation during T-Mobile's quarterly conference call with investors earlier this month. "I was supposed to retire two years ago. I've extended three times," he acknowledged, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript of his remarks, when questioned about his potential departure. "We have nothing to announce today. Ultimately [in] whatever capacity, I love this company. I'm not going anywhere. And in some form, I will definitely be part of the future. Just stay tuned for future announcements." Importantly, Carter added that he's in the midst of reconciling the financial accounting between T-Mobile and Sprint, which merged April 1. "We are in the process of aligning over 200 accounting policies that are disparate," he explained. Company officials said that work would be finished and presented to Wall Street during T-Mobile's next quarterly conference call, which will likely be held sometime in July. T-Mobile officials did not immediately respond to questions from Light Reading about the Cowen report. Carter's replacement will have plenty of work to look forward to.
