Posted: 17 May 2020 11:57 PM PDT Swedish battery maker Northvolt and state-owned utility Vattenfall launched a new modular and fully mobile energy storage system on Friday, one they say will be able to patch up stressed grids during a period of rapid electrification. While the system has a more obvious role to play in replacing diesel generators at mines, construction sites and live events, its size means the mobile battery can perform nonpermanent functions for grid-connected assets as well. The Voltpack Mobile System comes in units of 250 kilowatt-hours, which can be packaged into hubs with about five times that capacity, complete with an inverter and other necessary equipment. Multiple hubs can be connected in parallel. Northvolt, which counts Volkswagen, Siemens and Vestas among its backers, is currently building its first battery gigafactory in Sweden. It's been producing cells from its lab facility, but the Voltpack Mobile will be the first full-fledged system sold by the company. Vattenfall sees a role for the Voltpack Mobile System in bridging the gap between Sweden's rapid drive for electrification and the time it takes to get grid reinforcements through the red tape. Sweden's grids are already getting clogged up, and strict permitting requirements mean it can take five years to get work on upgrades underway, even with immediate economic growth up for grabs. "There are technology companies in the north of Sweden that want to establish new data centers, for example," Torbjörn Johansson, head of Vattenfall Network Solutions Sweden, said in an interview. "But it can take five, even 10 years for a grid connection to get up and running." In such cases, the Voltpack Mobile could be installed to perform peak-shaving for the local distribution company along with all the other grid-stability services a fully loaded containerized battery system can perform. Despite having just 10 million citizens, Sweden is home to more than 170 different distribution companies. A rendering of the Northvolt Ett gigafactory, currently under construction in the north of Sweden. (Credit: Northvolt) A startup company looking to trial contactless induction charging for electric vehicles is also interested in the mobile storage system, rather than waiting for a grid connection, Johansson said. Emad Zand, Northvolt's president for battery systems, said the Voltpack Mobile could ease seasonal curtailment of renewables. "If you have solar or wind that you know is going to be extremely active in certain periods of the year, you can have a battery asset there to even out the loads. You can optimize that asset," Zand told GTM. Sweden is aiming to have a net-zero economy by 2045, and by the end of this decade, it hopes to stop all sales of internal combustion engine cars. The biggest obstacle for those targets is the country's power grid. How Northvolt breezed through the valley of deathThe energy storage sector is littered with companies that made bold promises but showed little progress. Northvolt, in contrast, is currently building a huge battery factory in Sweden and working on permitting a second factory in Germany. The company has benefited from the backing of Vattenfall, which ranks among Europe's largest utilities. Vattenfall was an early supporter of Northvolt's bold ambition to build a multibillion-dollar gigafactory in Sweden. The firm is one of several potential customers Northvolt partnered with in the early days of its development. "It's very seldom you can sit with a [Global] Fortune 500 company and have the expertise on your side that informs how they should proceed in the future," Zand said. "So we're not only asking them for funding and purchase orders, we were actually advising them on what the future strategy on batteries could look like. And that became a very fruitful collaboration." After a career at consulting firm McKinsey and some success as an entrepreneur, Zand was looking for his next focus when he met Northvolt's CEO, Peter Carlsson. "When Peter explained his ideas to me, it was like talking to someone who had been to the future and come back," said Zand. Carlsson was quick to spot that batteries would be a major part of the automotive supply chain and Europe's carmakers would need some regionalization. Plans for the first factory, known as NorthVolt Ett, were announced in 2017. Northvolt has benefited from the EU's decision to make battery manufacturing a strategic priority. The European Investment Bank gave Northvolt a €350 million ($380 million) loan. German automaker Volkswagen paid €900 million for a 20 percent stake in June last year. ABB, Siemens and Vestas are among its other backers. Northvolt Ett (that's "One" in Swedish) will complete the first quarter of production capacity this year. Zand said the project is on time and on budget. When fully ramped, the facility will have an annual capacity of 32 gigawatt-hours, making batteries suitable for both automotive and stationary applications. Northvolt Zwei, in Germany, will be a joint venture with VW. Japan slips into recession, slump set to worsen as pandemic wreaks havoc - Reuters UK Posted: 17 May 2020 11:54 PM PDT TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's economy slipped into recession for the first time in 4-1/2 years in the last quarter, putting the nation on course for its deepest postwar slump as the coronavirus crisis ravages businesses and consumers. Monday's first-quarter GDP data underlined the broadening impact of the outbreak, with exports plunging the most since the devastating March 2011 earthquake as global lockdowns and supply chain disruptions hit shipments of Japanese goods. Analysts warn of an even bleaker picture for the current quarter as consumption crumbled after the government in April requested citizens to stay home and businesses to close, intensifying the challenge for policymakers battling a once-in-a-century pandemic. "It's near certainty the economy suffered an even deeper decline in the current quarter," said Yuichi Kodama, chief economist at Meiji Yasuda Research Institute. "Japan has entered a full-blown recession." The world's third-largest economy contracted an annualised 3.4% in the first quarter, preliminary official gross domestic product (GDP) data showed, less than a median market forecast for a 4.6% drop. The slump came on top of an even steeper 7.3% fall in the October-December period, with the consecutive quarters of contraction meeting the technical definition of a recession. Japan last suffered recession in the second half of 2015. The coronavirus, which first emerged in China late last year, has ravaged the global economy as many nations went into strict lockdowns to curb the outbreak that has so far killed over 310,000 people worldwide. The pandemic has been massively disruptive on supply chains and businesses, particularly in trade-reliant nations such as Japan. Indeed, the fallout of the virus on corporate Japan was telling with exports diving 6.0% in the first quarter, the biggest decline since April-June 2011. "Exports to China began to fall in February, followed by a wave of slumping shipments to Europe and the United States," said Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute. "Exports were also hurt by slumping inbound tourism," which counts as a drop in non-residents' purchases of Japanese services, he said. DEEPER SLUMP, SLOWER RECOVERYThe shakeout in global trade was underlined in recent March data, with exports shrinking the most in nearly four years due to plunging U.S.-bound shipments. Even the nation's major globe-trotting manufacturers weren't spared the pandemic's sweeping impact. Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) has said it will cut domestic vehicle production by 122,000 units in June and expects an 80% drop in full-year operating profit. The gloom in Japan is expected to deepen over coming months. Analysts polled by Reuters estimate Japan's economy will shrink an annualised 22.0% in the current quarter, which would be a record decline, with pressure on output intensifying after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in April declared a nationwide state of emergency amid the widening pandemic. The emergency was lifted for most regions on Thursday, but remained in effect for some big cities including Tokyo. Japan has so far reported 16,337 coronavirus cases and 756 deaths. Private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's $5 trillion economy, slipped 0.7% in January-March, less than a market forecast for a 1.6% drop, as robust demand for daily necessities partially offset the impact on services spending. All the same, it marked the second straight quarter of decline, as households endured the double-whammy of the coronavirus and a sales tax hike to 10% from 8% in October last year. Capital expenditure fell 0.5% in the first quarter after plummeting 4.8% in October-December last year, the GDP data showed, suggesting that uncertainty over the outlook is discouraging companies from boosting spending. Taken together, domestic demand knocked 0.7 percentage point off GDP growth, while external demand shed 0.2 point. All of this has put a strain on the labour market. The jobless rate in March rose to its highest in a year, while job availability slipped to a more than three-year low. The government has already announced a record $1.1 trillion stimulus package, and the Bank of Japan expanded stimulus for the second straight month in April. Abe has pledged a second supplementary budget later this month to fund fresh spending measures to cushion the economic blow from the outbreak. Still, many analysts warn that government support will come too little, too late. "As always in Japan, the implementation is very slow. It will take the later half of the second quarter (and) the third quarter" for government stimulus to kick in, said Martin Schulz, chief economist at Fujitsu. "The recovery will be slower than many are hoping for ... To recover from this crisis, it will take about two years at least." Big Tech's viral boom could be its undoing - The Australian Financial Review Posted: 17 May 2020 11:09 PM PDT Privacy pushThe first post-coronavirus regulatory push is already happening around privacy. Data are being created at the fastest ever rate since the virus made our lives largely virtual. A Bank of America report notes that the volume of data creation is up 50 per cent since the pandemic began in many parts of the West. Tech companies are helping dozens of governments track their citizens. Many of them hope to hang on to the data they are accumulating and, ultimately, to monetise it, particularly in areas such as healthcare. Google, Amazon, Facebook and Oracle were already trying to make inroads in the sector before COVID-19 hit. Contact tracing is moving ahead all too quickly, although information about the efficacy of surveillance as a public health tool is limited and questioned by some academics. In the UK, there is public scepticism about whether the IT industry can be trusted to design such products in the public interest. In the US, a recent survey showed that only half of Americans would participate in contact tracing, only one-third of them would be willing to share flight and other biometric information to fight the virus, and even fewer would want their wireless location tracked. Content moderationNo wonder Democrats and Republicans are both pushing bills to ensure that any data collected for virus fighting cannot be used for other means. Some European politicians and regulators, including the EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager, are calling for stringent rules and transparency. Content moderation is another area ripe for regulatory action. Big Tech companies have been reluctant to police disinformation online, in part because of civil liberty concerns. They also do not want to lose the legal protection that exempts them from responsibility for what users say or do online. But the rapid spread of coronavirus has forced them to take action to delete inaccurate public health information. Advertisement As one high-level European regulator recently pointed out to me, this makes it hard for these companies to argue that they cannot police misinformation in other areas. The consequence could be that they are forced by law to do so. That would pose a threat to the targeted advertising business model crucial to companies such as Google, Facebook and even Amazon. Size and powerThe third push will be around antitrust. Amazon may be delivering most of our essential goods, but its incredible size and power also make it much easier for activists to argue it is a monopoly. Critics will seek to have it broken up, forced to pay higher wages to its workers (a number of whom have contracted the virus), provide them with better benefits, or even be turned into a publicly-owned utility. As Pramila Jayapal, a congresswoman from Seattle, put it recently: "Two things can be true at the same time. A company can be doing tremendous work that is incredibly valued and essential, and it can be treating workers badly." That is not a good look as the big companies get bigger and start to gobble up weaker competitors. Senator Amy Klobuchar, the ranking member of the subcommittee on antitrust, said last week that Uber's potential acquisition of Grubhub raised "serious concerns" given that consumers and restaurants are now dependent on such services. "The last thing they need is an increase in the extremely high fees already paid to these companies," she said. Senator Elizabeth Warren has already teamed up with congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to call for a moratorium on "risky" mergers and acquisitions for the duration of the pandemic. Beyond all this, the different ways countries are dealing with trade-offs between public health and economic recovery – as well as surveillance and civil liberty – pose another challenge. We will probably see an evermore nationalistic technology sector, with different rules emerging for different regions. The shift will limit global growth opportunities for some platforms. Last year's techlash may be gone, but it is certainly not forgotten. Posted: 17 May 2020 10:54 PM PDT Putin was joking, but that description is starting to look more and more accurate. Russia has joined about 100 countries in backing a resolution at the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA), calling for an independent inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic. The European Union-drafted resolution comes on the back of a push by Australia for an inquiry into China's initial handling of the crisis. That was met with an angry response from Beijing, which accused Canberra of a "highly irresponsible" move that could "disrupt international cooperation in fighting the pandemic and goes against people's shared aspiration." While the resolution to be presented at the annual meeting of World Health Organization (WHO) members, which begins on Monday in Geneva, does not single out China or any other country, it calls for an "impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation" of "the (WHO)-coordinated international health response to Covid-19." The wording of the resolution is weak compared to Australia's previous calls for a probe into China's role and responsibility in the origin of the pandemic. This may have been necessary to get a majority of WHO member states to sign on -- particularly those, such as Russia, with traditionally strong ties to Beijing. But that doesn't mean China's government should rest easy. The potential for an independent probe, even one not initially tasked with investigating an individual country's response, to turn up damning or embarrassing information is great. Australian government sources told the ABC, the country's public broadcaster, that the resolution's language was sufficiently strong to "ensure that a proper and thorough investigation took place." Beijing has previously said it would only support an investigation held by the WHO, which has been accused of being overly influenced by China -- a charge top WHO officials refute. Speaking last week, China's ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming said: "We're open, we are transparent, we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear. We welcome an international, independent review, but it has to be organized by the WHO." With more countries signing on to the EU resolution as the assembly nears, that may be out of China's hands. Evidence of failures?Any highly critical report could have a potentially disastrous effect on China's global standing, which has already taken a major knock as a result of the coronavirus crisis, with the United States in particular pushing a narrative that Beijing is to blame for the pandemic. China has consistently pushed back against any criticism, pointing to a warning given to the WHO in late December about a potential new strain of pneumonia spreading in the city of Wuhan. While the WHO -- and particularly Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus -- have praised China's response, a probe into the organization's initial handling will shine a spotlight on just what information China knew when, and how much was shared with the WHO. Top officials, including Xi, have admitted to being aware that the infection was spreading even as the Wuhan government was still downplaying its severity and police were detaining whistleblowers. In an interview with CNN on Saturday, Dr. Zhong Nanshan, the Chinese government's senior medical adviser and the public face of the country's fight against Covid-19, said the local authorities "didn't like to tell the truth at that time." He said: "At the very beginning they kept silent, and then I said probably we have (a larger) number of people being infected." Zhong added that he became suspicious when the number of officially reported cases in Wuhan remained at 41 for more than 10 days -- despite infections emerging overseas. "I didn't believe that result, so I (kept) asking and then, you have to give me the real number," he said. "I suppose they are very reluctant to answer my question." The suggestion that knee-jerk censorship or a deliberate coverup by Beijing enabled the virus to spread, first within China and then throughout the world, has been repeatedly and angrily refuted by Chinese officials. But this has nevertheless hurt the country's global standing, with foreign politicians -- particularly in the US but also in parts of Europe and the rest of the world -- referring to the "China virus" or blaming Beijing for the chaos they are now dealing with. China has come in for plenty of international criticism over the years: on human rights, its aggressive posturing in the South China Sea, and issues of trade and intellectual property. But often that dissent has come from Beijing's traditional rivals, such as the US -- many smaller countries have held their tongues, perhaps to ensure economic ties with China are maintained. However, the virus -- and the corresponding global economic slump -- has opened the door to a wave of criticism and pushback not experienced by Beijing for years. Taiwan at the WHA?One example of how China's global standing has suffered as a result is another issue that will be on the docket at Monday's WHA meeting: whether to allow Taiwan to join. The trajectory of Taipei's international reputation during the pandemic has been the reverse of Beijing's. Taiwan has been hailed for its effective response to the virus, and numerous countries have backed the island's government in seeking to rejoin the WHA as an observer, a position it held until 2016, when Beijing forced it out after the traditionally pro-China KMT party lost power in Taiwan. On Friday, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman accused those countries who back Taiwan's participation as seeking "selfish political gains even at the expense of hijacking the WHA and undermining global anti-pandemic cooperation." He predicted that the proposal would be "firmly rejected by the vast majority of the international community." That seemed the most likely result at the time. But with the number of countries supporting the investigation resolution increasing by the hour, Beijing may no longer be so sure. ‘Seberg’ – movie exploits and shortchanges actress Jean... - SaportaReport Posted: 17 May 2020 10:48 PM PDT By Eleanor Ringel Cater Alive or dead, Jean Seberg can't catch a break from the movies. Ironic, in a way, since she's associated with two of the biggest "breaks" in cinema history. The first was the Hollywood version of "the big break." Much as David O. Selznick did decades earlier for "Gone With The Wind," in the late 1950s, director Otto Preminger launched a nationwide search for an unknown to star in his Joan of Arc movie, "Saint Joan." He reeled in teenaged Jean Seberg from Marshalltown, Iowa. The notoriously sadistic Preminger did not treat her well – to the point that the young actress was actually burned when he filmed Joan's death at the stake. Her next "break" came as the star of Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless," which signaled the commercial cresting of the so-called French New Wave in the late '50s and early '60s. As dictatorial in his own auteurist way as Preminger, Godard knew what he had in the beautiful young Seberg, probably better than she knew herself. For better and worse, she became an icon, with a spotty film career. This is not the Jean Seberg "Seberg" is interested in – though director Benedict Andrews' apparently assumes you know all this about her before you see his disappointing and exploitative picture. Rather, "Seberg" is about the time in Seberg's life when she was mercilessly harassed by the FBI. As it's put in a1970 internal memo quoted in the movie, agents were instructed to "cause her embarrassment and serve to cheapen her image with the general public." Why? Because Seberg, who at age 14 signed up to support the NAACP, was now in bed, so to speak, with the Black Panthers. The Feds took the "in bed" part to heart, planting the rumor that she was pregnant with a Black Panther's child. The baby died a few days after it was born, sort of terrible collateral damage in the Bureau's ceaseless torment of the actor. As the movie shows, Seberg (Kristen Stewart) was guilty of nothing more than, perhaps, naiveté. Having moved to Paris, she came back to Hollywood in the late 1960s to star with Clint Eastwood in the legendary flop, "Paint Your Wagon." When she deplaned, she was photographed surrounded by African-American men, raising her fist in a Black Panther salute. According to the movie, she did become involved – politically, socially and sexually – with a black activist named Hakim Abdullah Jamal (a very charming Anthony Mackie). She hosted glittering celebrity-studded fundraisers of the sort trashed by Tom Wolfe in a famous New York Magazine article. She was guilty of being, well, a guilty white liberal. And a female one to boot. A pretty female with power. As Jamal points out, he and his colleagues had to raise a gun to attract media attention. All she had to do was cut her hair (Seberg sported the Mia Farrow "Rosemary's Baby" look long before Farrow did). Now, there's a lot here for a movie. And maybe someday someone will make that movie. But Andrews has inexplicably moved Seberg herself out of the spotlight and turned his attention instead to a fictitious FBI agent (Jack O'Connell) assigned to Seberg's case. The result? A picture that would've been better titled "I Stalked Jean Seberg." See, the agent is good at his job, but unlike his partner (Vince Vaughn, terrible as usual), he has qualms about what the Bureau is doing to Seberg. His moral dilemma and complicated feelings about his quarry become the core of the film. And like Seberg's baby, Stewart's attentive, fearless performance becomes collateral damage. She's reduced to a supporting player in her own movie, as used in her way as Seberg was in hers. And it's a shame. And, almost as bad, a bore. The "Seberg" movie can be seen on Amazon Prime. Tributes pour in for award-winning Quebec actress Monique Mercure - Yahoo Style Posted: 17 May 2020 09:48 PM PDT Actress Monique Mercure, whose performances helped elevate Quebec cinema to the international silver screen, has died at 89. Simon Brault, director and CEO of the Canada Council for the Arts, said on social media that his friend of 30 years died Saturday night after a battle with throat cancer. A versatile actress, Mercure was known for her work in film, television and theatre, with a repertoire spanning everything from Greek tragedies to contemporary classics. In 1977, her performance in "J.A. Martin Photographer" earned her best actress awards at both the Cannes Film Festival and Canadian Film Awards. But it was Mercure's devotion to theatre that set her apart, according to Lorraine Pintal, the artistic director of the Theatre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal. Fittingly, Mercure spent the night of her best actress award at Cannes on the Montreal stage instead of collecting her trophy in person, Pintal said. "The place I needed to be tonight is here, before you," Mercure told the audience, who responded with a massive ovation. Brault said Mercure left "a distinctive and indelible" mark on every screen and stage she graced. "Fiery, brave and determined, she had verve and outspokenness that many feared," wrote Brault, who succeeded her as the head of the National Theatre School of Canada. "She also had a sense of humour and self-deprecation far too rare in a world that takes itself so seriously." Mercure was born Monique Emond in Montreal on November 14, 1930. She initially studied music and aspired to become a cellist. In 1949, she married composer Pierre Mercure, and they had three children before separating in 1958. By the 1950s, she turned her attention to acting, taking roles in both film and theatre. She eventually gained widespread attention for her performance in Claude Fournier's "Deux Femmes en Or." A string of successful films followed, including Claude Jutra's "Mon oncle Antoine," as well as "Naked Lunch," "The Red Violin" and "Conquest." She continued to log numerous film and TV appearances in more recent years, including the role of Edith Beauchamp in "Providence." Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes, including from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who described her as "a great Canadian actress." "Monique Mercure has had a profound impact on generations of Canadians," Trudeau wrote on Twitter. "She helped promote Quebec cinema beyond our borders and her legacy will live on through her work." Quebec Premier Francois Legault also extended his condolences to Mercure's family on Twitter. Security and the rapidly growing importance of mobile apps - Help Net Security Posted: 17 May 2020 09:27 PM PDT Organizations are under more pressure than ever before to rapidly produce both new apps and updates to existing apps, not only because it's essentially the only way they can interact with their customers, but also because there will be a flood of new users who previously relied on physical locations to conduct their business. Continuous mobile development is now more critical than ever, and organizations must provide error-free, engaging user experiences. In the rush to deliver intuitive apps that will capture customer attention and loyalty, it's likely that security will take a backseat to features and functionality. According to the Verizon Mobile Security Index 2020, 43% of organizations said they knowingly cut corners on mobile security in 2019 to "get the job done." And that was before the global pandemic. Features trump security – until they don'tIt's not hard to understand why developers would make this choice. Mobile users rarely look into security as a reason to use an app; features and functionality rule the roost. Plus, implementing security is time consuming and expensive. Getting first to market is a huge competitive advantage, so no one wants to delay their delivery schedules. Even worse, iOS and Android security specialists are scarce and in high demand. Development teams may lack the skills to secure their apps properly. But developers will find that, eventually, skimping on security will come back to bite them. Features will always trump security – until they don't. And with the pandemic causing a spike in usage, all these new users will likely shine a light on security flaws that cybercriminals and hackers will exploit. For example, when Zoom rapidly became the de facto conferencing app for businesses and educational institutions around the world, the sudden crush of millions of new users exposed security flaws that had previously gone unnoticed and unaddressed. To their credit, Zoom acknowledged the problems and took quick action to address them, but their experience should serve as a warning for all organizations. Security flaws can contribute to far more dire consequences. For example, there's little doubt that Travelex, which bill itself as the world's largest retail currency dealer, was seriously damaged by a ransomware attack on New Year's Eve, which forced it to take down its website in at least 30 countries. The company is now reportedly preparing for bankruptcy and seeking a buyer. Organizations cannot afford for consumers to doubt the security of a mobile app when that app is, in some cases, the only revenue generation engine they have left. Brands today no longer have the luxury of putting features above security. Implementing app security in a fast-paced digital worldSo, what should businesses do? If development teams opt to take on the task of security themselves, they should at the very least make sure they are addressing each of the OWASP Mobile Top Ten vulnerabilities. This will be a struggle for many organizations unless they have mobile security professionals embedded in their development teams, and as I mentioned earlier, mobile security professionals are in short supply. Other development teams will look to integrate security software development kits (SDKs) into their apps that provide security. This is a much more efficient option than manually coding security into an app, but it's still not a trivial exercise to manually integrate an SDK. Plus, it's critical to vet the SDKs a team uses, as rogue and vulnerable SDKs are a serious problem in the mobile app industry. For example, Tushu and Twoshu SDKs infected hundreds of apps on Google Play last year, enabling cyber criminals to mount mobile ad fraud schemes. Other SDKs introduced vulnerabilities, such as Adobe's Mobile SDK. If organizations go this route, it's a good idea to hire a security consultant to vet the security SDKs for potential flaws and to evaluate their ability to protect an app. Finally, organizations are increasingly turning to security automation through artificial intelligence to harden and protect their apps. This option has the advantage of being very fast, as AI can implement security in minutes without needing source code at all, and it's inexpensive when compared to manual coding. As an additional benefit, automation always builds security in the same way, which provides brands with an auditable guarantee that the security posture was implemented according to the requirements of the organization, unlike manual implementations. The pandemic and associated lockdown have accelerated the move toward mobile as the primary way customers interact with businesses, so time is of the essence. The winners in this new digital world will be the app makers and security providers who can quickly and reliably deliver apps that delight the customer while also remaining safe and trustworthy. SoftBank in Talks to Sell T-Mobile Shares to Deutsche Telekom - The Wall Street Journal Posted: 17 May 2020 09:27 PM PDT SoftBank 9984 1.44% Group Corp. is in talks to sell a significant portion of its T-Mobile TMUS 2.54% US Inc. stake to controlling shareholder Deutsche Telekom AG DTEGY -0.13% as the Japanese technology conglomerate scrambles to raise funds. The transaction, if completed, would boost Deutsche Telekom's nearly-44% stake in T-Mobile TMUS 2.54% above 50%, according to people familiar with the matter. The German company already has voting control of the U.S. mobile-phone giant under a prior agreement with SoftBank, 9984 1.44% which recently held almost 25% of T-Mobile's common stock, according to FactSet. The size of any purchase is still being discussed but it would likely be significant: T-Mobile's market value stands at about $120 billion. Details of the discussions couldn't be learned but Deutsche Telekom would likely buy the shares at a slight discount, as is typical for a transaction of this type. A deal isn't guaranteed and the talks could still fall apart, the people cautioned. T-Mobile took its current form on April 1 after it absorbed Sprint Corp., a SoftBank-controlled business that struggled for years to defend its customer base against competition from rivals. By combining the third- and fourth-biggest players, the merger consolidated the U.S. wireless sector into a market dominated by three national networks. SoftBank is expected to retain rights to 48.8 million shares it surrendered to complete the merger that will be reissued if T-Mobile's stock price reaches certain milestones within two years, one of the people familiar with the matter said. SoftBank is seeking to sell assets and improve its performance after suffering big investment losses and coming under pressure from activist investor Elliott Management Corp. SoftBank Chairman Masayoshi Son in March said his company would aim to sell $41 billion of assets to boost its liquidity and help fund a big new stock-buyback program. The company was expected to look at a number of holdings, including T-Mobile, to help fund the buyback. The new stock sale under discussion would allow SoftBank to cash out some of its bet on Sprint, a holding that recently turned into a rare bright spot for the Japanese conglomerate. Many other SoftBank investments—some through its giant Vision Fund—including WeWork, ride-hailing service Uber Technologies Inc. and Oyo Hotels & Homes Pvt. Ltd., operate in sectors particularly hard-hit by the coronavirus crisis. SoftBank and Deutsche Telekom had agreed to lockup provisions that prevent SoftBank from selling most of its position in T-Mobile over the next four years, with exceptions for small divestitures. Those rules would likely be tweaked to allow for the stock sale under discussion. Deutsche Telekom on Friday reported that its first-quarter revenue and profit both increased despite the early effects of the coronavirus pandemic on its operations. Asked whether the German company had the balance-sheet strength to buy more T-Mobile shares, Chief Executive Tim Höttges declined to comment but called the U.S. carrier "a great business to have" with "big, attractive opportunities going forward." —Phred Dvorak contributed to this article. Obama Again Blasts White House Response to Coronavirus Crisis - Slate Posted: 17 May 2020 08:54 PM PDT Slate is making its coronavirus coverage free for all readers. Subscribe to support our journalism. Start your free trial. Former President Barack Obama again criticized the way President Donald Trump's administration has handled the coronavirus pandemic. And this time, he did it in public. Obama issued the rare criticism of a sitting president from one of his predecessors while delivering a brief online commencement address for students graduating from historically black colleges and universities. "More than anything," Obama said, "this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they're doing. A lot of them aren't even pretending to be in charge." Obama was the headliner of "Show Me Your Walk, HBCU Edition," which was a two-hour event hosted by comedian Kevin Hart that streamed on social networks. The former president's address lasted less than 10 minutes but quickly made waves as Obama pointedly noted how the pandemic has been disproportionately affecting black communities. And he also tied that in with a reference to the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, the 25-year-old who was shot and killed in Georgia in February. "Let's be honest—a disease like this just spotlights the underlying inequalities and extra burdens that black communities have historically had to deal with in this country," Obama said. "We see it in the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on our communities, just as we see it when a black man goes for a jog, and some folks feel like they can stop and question and shoot him if he doesn't submit to their questioning." Obama recognized that "the timing is not ideal" to graduate, considering it is "in the middle of a devastating pandemic and a terrible recession" but at the same time, the leadership void that has become evident during the ongoing crisis shows just how much the country needs the vision of the new graduates. "If the world's going to get better, it's going to be up to you," Obama said. "With everything suddenly feeling like it's up for grabs, this is your time to seize the initiative." Although Obama never actually mentioned Trump in his remarks, his address once again suggested how the former president is gearing up to participate in the election season. Last week, Obama made headlines with his harsh criticism of the White House's "anemic and spotty" response to the pandemic. "It would have been bad even with the best of governments," Obama said on a call with former administration staffers. "It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mind-set — of 'what's in it for me' and 'to heck with everybody else' — when that mind-set is operationalized in our government." Obama's criticism is bound to once again rile the president, who has taken to attacking his predecessor more than usual lately. After Obama's criticism last week, Trump ramped up his efforts to blame his predecessor for the Russia investigation, characterizing it all as a broad effort to impeach him. In a move that is unprecedented in modern times, Trump has used official White House events and publications to accuse Obama of crimes that he has come to characterize as "Obamagate," a term many like to repeat but no one seems to quite know what it is. Ned Price, a former CIA analyst who was National Security Council spokesman under Obama characterized "Obamagate" as "a hashtag in search of a scandal." But that has not stopped Trump, who on Thursday went as far as to write at tweet calling on lawmakers to demand Obama "testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA." Japan just fell into recession, and much worse could be on the way - CNN Posted: 17 May 2020 08:24 PM PDT The world's third-largest economy shrank 0.9% in the January-to-March period compared to the prior quarter, according to government data released Monday. While that is slightly better than the 1.2% drop forecast in a Refinitiv poll of analysts, it is still the second straight quarter of declines — meaning Japan has now entered recession. The drop was more dramatic, a 3.4% fall, when measured as an annualized rate. Japan's economy was already struggling before the outbreak: Economic activity contracted late last year as the country absorbed a sales tax hike and grappled with the aftermath of Typhoon Hagibis, a powerful storm that hit the country last fall. And though the virus started weighing on the country in early 2020, analysts warn that Japan's first quarter does not capture the full effect of the pandemic. "The sharp fall in output in the first quarter suggests the spread of the virus had already dealt a significant blow to economic activity in March," wrote Tom Learmouth, Japan economist for Capital Economics, in a research note Monday. He said that "much worse" is to come in the second quarter, forecasting a 12% quarter-on-quarter plunge. Private consumption, which contributes to more than half of Japan's economy, fell 0.7% — and that was before the government declared a state of emergency that led to nationwide restaurant and retail closures. "That's just the tip of the iceberg," Learmouth said. "April and May will have been far worse." Exports — which makes up 16% of Japan's economy — shrank 6% in the quarter, as goods bound for the country's major trading partners stagnated. It was the sharpest contraction for that sector since 2011, when a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the country. The Japanese government, meanwhile, has already announced a roughly $1 trillion stimulus package to protect the economy from the fallout of the pandemic. That's equivalent to about 20% of Japan's annual output. Shinzo Abe's administration is likely to announce even more measures before the end of the month. Joe Addabbo is hoping to inspire the governor to sign the mobile betting bill into law by the end of the year. The senator estimates New York could make up to $200 million a year. "We do not as a state have the luxury of declining revenue at this point. We have a severe budget deficit. Even prior to the coronavirus we had it, so now there's a need for revenue," Addabbo told CBS2's Steve Overmyer. "I think we all share the concern for those who have an addiction, and right now, New Yorkers are going to Jersey to do mobile sports betting, they're doing it illegally, so we can't help them because we don't know who they are. So there are a number of issues that we address in our bill. That's why I had this 'Plan, Pass and Prepare' strategy for this year to try and get mobile sports betting done this year." Dow futures jump 200 points, rebounding from last week's losses - CNBC Posted: 17 May 2020 07:24 PM PDT A man walks by the Wall Street subway sign on March 23, 2020 in New York City. Angela Weiss | AFP | Getty Images Futures contracts tied to the major U.S. stock indexes rose at the start of the overnight session Sunday evening as investors pored over comments on the state of the American economy from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in light of last week's market losses. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures climbed 214 points, implying an opening gain of 0.5%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures also rose and pointed to modest advances of 0.5% and 0.35%, respectively, at Monday's open. The overnight moves Sunday evening followed a red week on Wall Street. The Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 fell 1.1% and 2.2%, respectively, last week with the latter notching its worst week since March. The Dow industrials finished the week down 2.65% for its third negative week in four and its worst week since April 3. Investors on Sunday night heard from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who spoke with CBS' "60 Minutes" to detail the impact of Covid-19 on the U.S. economy and the path back toward growth. The central bank leader struck a cautiously optimistic tone, telling the show that he's "highly confident" the U.S. economy will claw its way back from the current pullback, but warned that it may not fully recover until a Covid-19 vaccine is complete. He also said he does not believe the current downturn will resemble the Great Depression some 90 years ago despite the possibility that the U.S. unemployment rate could peak around 25%. "I don't think that's the likely outcome at all. We had a very healthy economy two months ago. Our financial system is strong," he said. You have governments around the world, and central banks around the world, responding with great force and very quickly. And staying at it." "So I think all of those things point to what will be a ... it's going to be a very sharp downturn, [but] it should be much shorter downturn than what you'd associated with the 1930s," Powell said. Wall Street's veteran investors say stocks could be in for choppy trading until it's clear that state efforts to reopen their economies aren't met with significant spikes in new cases of Covid-19. A flurry of recent economic data, including record-setting unemployment figures and a 16.4% plunge in April retail sales, show just how abruptly state-imposed business closures impacted the broader U.S. economy. Patrick Leary, chief market strategist at Incapital, told CNBC's Patti Domm that financial markets are looking a little fatigued between abysmal economic data, recent state-by-state efforts to restart business and worries over renewed animosity between the U.S. and China. "Market reactions to the data have been somewhat muted," he said. He said stocks on Friday were reacting negatively to threats from China that U.S. companies could be targeted if the U.S. does not ease up on Huawei. "The markets right now don't need another reason to be pessimistic. It seems like both the bond market and stock market are getting a little tired. Both markets are looking for the next catalyst," he added. — CNBC's Jeff Cox and Patti Domm contributed reporting. Click here for the latest news on the coronavirus. May 17, 2020 at 06:35PM https://ift.tt/3dVFCdL スター・エンターテインメント・グループがクイーンズ・ワーフ・ブリズベンの16億豪ドルの融資を確保 - IAG Japan "エンターテインメント" - Google ニュース https://ift.tt/2W81riD Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
