President Trump’s “Live and Let Die” Moment - Slate Posted: 07 May 2020 12:14 AM PDT Every once in a while the universe aligns, the clouds part in the sky, and out of nowhere an instance of unexpected clarity shines through. A moment of Zen, if you will. On Tuesday, just such a moment arrived when the gods of side-eye looked down upon our beleaguered nation and delivered President Donald Trump touring a N95 mask manufacturing plant in Phoenix. During the coronavirus crisis, Trump's profound lack of anything resembling human emotions has been startling, even by Trump standards. Instead, the president has obsessed over numbers in their various forms: the death count, ventilator production, COVID tests performed, the stock market, poll numbers, approval ratings, and, perhaps most macabre, the TV ratings of his nightly pandemic press conference disasters where he lies, obfuscates, and distorts all of the above. Throughout it all, Trump has provided no collective moral, ethical, or even practical framework for how to address the interrelated problems posed by the pandemic, both in terms of public health and our collective economic well-being. This is a profoundly hard calculation to get right, but so far the human element of what is happening to actual Americans on the other side of the number-based presidential scorecard had been noticeably absent. There is no acknowledgment from this president—or his party really—that you can want to go back to work, even need to go back to work, while simultaneously being legitimately fearful, unwilling, or unable to do so. It's been abundantly clear since the president first floated "reopening the economy" by Easter, a single week after shutting down the country, that Trump's open 'er up mantra on the economy has always been in service of his numbers, not his people. In some quarters of the American psyche, somehow Trump and his allies have managed to transform ill-informed, short-term decision-making—that will likely come at enormous human and economic cost in the medium and long term—into a vague resemblance of and amorphous referendum on "freedom." At this particular moment, "freedom" for Trump and his people is the freedom to do absolutely whatever they want to do whenever they want to do it. Essential liberties like the freedom to go to a crowded beach on a hot day no matter the consequences. The freedom to refuse to wear a mask even if it could save your life—and most importantly others' lives. What do you call this particular brand of absolutist, consequences-be-damned freedom that is bubbling to the surface in the current moment? On Tuesday, we got an answer when in walked Trump to the Honeywell mask plant for a tour of the production of vital PPE equipment that took so long to get underway. Because this is Donald Trump, the tour was accompanied by a soundtrack blaring in the background that made it hard to hear what was being said. Because this is President Donald Trump, the background music resembled a campaign rally of one, complete with Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." and Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger." It's hard to imagine the world that the Trump administration inhabits, or the mind of the president it serves, where this somber moment in American history felt like the right time to turn to Trumpified Jock Jams. During the tour, Trump and his chief of staff Mark Meadows did not wear masks, even though the country is recommending Americans wear them and some states are compelling citizens to do so. As a rep from the company explained to Trump the mask production process, the stars aligned, the soundtrack flipped to its next song, the clouds cleared, a moment of clarity arrived. Trump nodded along comprehendingly to the presentation while the lyrics from Guns N' Roses' version of "Live and Let Die" drowned out the mask-making details. And in that moment of Zen, the live and let die philosophy of governance was born. Trump admits reopening states might lead to more deaths but he's going to do it anyway - indy100 Posted: 07 May 2020 12:14 AM PDT Donald Trump has said that the relaxing of lockdown guidelines may result in some deaths but he is going ahead with it anyway. Speaking to ABC anchor David Muir on World News Tonight, Trump defended the decision in some states to roll back the restrictions imposed by lockdown, despite there being no signs that the coronavirus pandemic is subsiding. Speaking to the president in a face mask production factory in Phoenix, Arizona, Muir asked:
In response, the president said that it was "possible" but they are going to practice social distancing and wash their hands which is what everyone is supposed to have been doing anyway.
Trump also said that along with deaths, some people will be 'badly affected' by the decision to prioritise the US economy over the public's health and well-being.
To further exemplify that he was favouring the economy over health, Trump told reporters outside the White House, before his trip to Arizona that's there is "no great win one way or the other" on this issue.
Trump then also suggested that he views the citizens of the United States as "warriors" against the virus who are fighting for the economy. It is true that the United States is facing record unemployment levels as millions of American's have lost their jobs, but that should be countered with the fact that the US is currently the only country with more than one million cases of coronavirus and also has the highest death toll. Trump contradicts nurse he's honoring over PPE availability - CNN Posted: 06 May 2020 11:44 PM PDT A reporter asked the nurses attending the National Nurse Day event if their PPE supplies are where they need to be amid the coronavirus pandemic, and many of them nodded in agreement or answered affirmatively. "I think it's sporadic," answered Sophia L. Thomas, president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. "I mean, I talk to my colleagues around the country. Certainly there are pockets around the country where PPE is not ideal, but this is an unprecedented time." Thomas said she works at a community health center in New Orleans, and that her youngest Covid-19 patient was 4 days old. "The infection control measures that we learned back when we went to school, one gown and one mask for one patient per day -- this is a different time," she said, adding that she has been reusing a single N95 mask for "a few weeks now." "PPE has been sporadic, but it's been manageable. And we do what we have to do," Thomas said. "We are nurses and we learn to adapt and do whatever we can do for our patients to get the job done and the care provided, and that's what we will continue to do as Covid-19 continues." Despite her firsthand experience, Trump disputed Thomas' account. "Sporadic for you but not sporadic for a lot of other people," the President told her. "Oh no, I agree, Mr. President," she answered. "Because I've heard the opposite," Trump said. "I have heard that they are loaded up with gowns now. We had empty shelves and empty nothing because it wasn't put there by the last administration." Front-line health workers have reported shortages of PPE as the virus has swept through the country, and the White House has worked to facilitate ramped-up production of items such as masks and gowns since the pandemic started. Posted: 06 May 2020 11:14 PM PDT U.S. President Donald Trump watches workers on the assembly line manufacturing protective masks for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak during a tour of a Honeywell manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Arizona, May 5, 2020. Tom Brenner | Reuters The Lincoln Project, which is run by Republican operatives who oppose President Donald Trump, raised $1 million after the president ripped the group on Twitter this week – marking it the super PAC's biggest day of fundraising yet. Reed Galen, a member of the Lincoln Project's advisory committee, told CNBC that the total came after the president's Tuesday morning Twitter tirade in reaction to an ad titled "Mourning in America," which unloads on Trump's response to the coronavirus pandemic. It recently aired on Fox News, which Trump often watches and praises. Galen said it was the Lincoln Project's best single-day fundraising haul "A group of RINO Republicans who failed badly 12 years ago, then again 8 years ago, and then got BADLY beaten by me, a political first timer, 4 years ago, have copied (no imagination) the concept of an ad from Ronald Reagan, 'Morning in America,'" the president said just before 1:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Trump fired off another tweet later in day, suggesting the Lincoln Project was a scam PAC. The organization is run by longtime Republican and independent political advisors, such as Steve Schmidt, John Weaver, Rick Wilson, Jennifer Horn and George Conway, husband of senior Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway. The Lincoln Project's big fundraising day in the wake of Trump's tweets could be the financial boost it needs to keep pumping out more anti-Trump ads. It finished the first quarter raising $1.9 million and has just more than $1.2 million on hand. Their top donors include Walmart heir Christy Walton and Silicon Valley executive Ron Conway, records show. Galen noted that the same ad that riled up Trump has continued to air on cable markets around Washington, D.C., and will be seen next week in key battleground states. The group recently put out an ad in support of Joe Biden, the apparent Democratic nominee for president. That ad has aired in Wisconsin and Michigan. UK royal Archie celebrates first birthday with story from mum Meghan - The Straits Times Posted: 06 May 2020 11:10 PM PDT UK royal Archie celebrates first birthday with story from mum Meghan - The Straits Times LONDON (REUTERS) - Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, the son of Britain's Prince Harry and his American wife Meghan, celebrated his first birthday on Wednesday (May 6), with his parents marking the occasion with a video of his mother reading him a story. In footage posted on the Instagram page of the Save the Children charity, Meghan reads giggling Archie, who is pictured wearing a simple white bodysuit, one of his favourite books, Duck! Rabbit!. The video was recorded last weekend by Prince Harry, who can be heard chuckling and cheering from behind the camera. Archie is the seventh in line to the British throne and Queen Elizabeth's eighth great-grandchild. His parents, who have become huge global celebrities since their star-studded wedding in 2018, are officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex but their son has no title. The family are now living in Los Angeles after the couple stepped down from their royal roles at the end of March to forge new careers. Their exit caused a crisis in the royal family, and came after a reported rift with Harry's elder brother, Prince William, and growing hostility to the media's intense coverage. A spokesman for the couple, who had to give up their SussexRoyal Instagram page and branding as part of the deal to exit their royal duties, said they had chosen to publish Archie's video on the charity's page to highlight its campaign to support children impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. "As they celebrate this family moment, the Duke and Duchess wanted to continue to raise awareness around the urgency of bringing food and learning resources to millions of children," the spokesman said. Members of the royal family posted messages and pictures on social media to mark the occasion. "Wishing Archie a very happy first birthday today!" Kensington Palace, the office of Prince William, said on Twitter. Archie's birth at London's Portland Hospital last May was shrouded in secrecy after the couple declined to disclose any details beforehand and then only allowed a small, select group of media access for a brief photo call to show him off two days later. While the couple wanted the birth to be a private matter, newspapers, for whom stories about the royals are popular with many readers, felt that as members of the British royal family, they needed to recognise that the public which funded the institution had a right to know about it. The criticism over Archie's birth marked the first overt deterioration in the couple's relations with the press, which ultimately was a key factor in their decision to step back from their royal lives. The Sussexes said last month they would have "zero engagement" with four of Britain's top tabloids while on Friday, Meghan lost an initial part of her legal claim against one newspaper for breaching her privacy by printing parts of a letter she had sent to her estranged father. 2020-05-06 12:58:58Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMibmh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnN0cmFpdHN0aW1lcy5jb20vd29ybGQvZXVyb3BlL3VrLXJveWFsLWFyY2hpZS1jZWxlYnJhdGVzLWZpcnN0LWJpcnRoZGF5LXdpdGgtc3RvcnktZnJvbS1tdW0tbWVnaGFu0gEA?oc=5 |
Professor researching COVID-19 killed in apparent murder-suicide, police say - USA TODAY Posted: 06 May 2020 10:44 PM PDT A University of Pittsburgh professor who was "on the verge of making very significant findings" about COVID-19 was fatally shot in Pennsylvania over the weekend, authorities say. Bing Liu, a 37-year-old research assistant professor, was found dead in a home Saturday with gunshot wounds in his head, neck, torso and an extremity, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner. An hour later, a second person, 46-year-old Hao Gu, was found dead in a vehicle less than a mile away, according to the agency. Investigators believe Gu killed Liu in his home before returning to his car and taking his own life, Detective Sgt. Brian Kohlhepp of the Ross Police Department said in a statement. Police believe the men knew each other and that the homicide was "the result of a lengthy dispute regarding an intimate partner," Kohlhepp said. "We have found zero evidence that this tragic event has anything to do with employment at the University of Pittsburgh, any work being conducted at the University of Pittsburgh and the current health crisis affecting the United States and the world," Kohlhepp said. Kohlhepp said because those involved were not United States citizens, the police department's review is being forwarded to federal authorities. 'We'd like to get this into patients": Researchers in Pittsburgh have developed a potential coronavirus vaccine Liu earned a Ph.D. in computational science from the National University of Singapore, studied as a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University and went on to become a research associate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In a statement, his colleagues described him as a "prolific researcher" who published more than 30 papers and was an "excellent mentor." "Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications," the statement said. "We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence." The university also released a statement saying it "is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Bing Liu, a prolific researcher and admired colleague at Pitt. The University extends our deepest sympathies to Liu's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time." Google: If Choosing Between Desktop or Mobile Site, Choose Mobile - Search Engine Journal Posted: 06 May 2020 10:27 PM PDT Google's John Mueller recently stated that site owners should prioritize their mobile site if they have both a desktop and mobile version. This topic was discussed in a Google Webmaster Central hangout held on May 1, 2020. Question: Focus on Mobile or Desktop for SEO?An e-commerce site owner submitted a question asking whether they should focus on improving the mobile or desktop version of site. The site owner doesn't have the budget to update both versions, and most of all wants to ensure their efforts are conducive to improving search rankings. From an SEO perspective, on which version of the site should the owner dedicate their time and resources? Here's what Mueller has to say. John Mueller's ResponseEver since Google switched to mobile-first indexing, the mobile version of a site is the only one that matters when it comes to rankings. Presuming the e-commerce site in question has been moved to mobile-first indexing, then Google is no longer crawling the desktop version. To that end, Mueller says the mobile version is the one this site owner should be focusing on. That doesn't mean completely delete the desktop site, however, as there may be some users who only access the site on desktop. Ideally, if you're choosing between a desktop or mobile site, the best course of action would be switching to a responsive site. If that's not an option, due to budget restraints or any other reason, then focus on updating the mobile version. When SEO is your number one priority, then you can't go wrong with thinking mobile-first (just like Google's indexing). Hear the full question and answer in the video below:
