requires people to wear masks or face coverings while outdoors

Leaders in Miami-Dade and Broward counties have announced new orders requiring the use of masks or face coverings in public at all times.

(WSVN.com) – Leaders in Miami-Dade and Broward counties have announced new orders requiring the use of masks or face coverings in public at all times.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced he will be signing an order requiring the public to wear a face mask in public at all times.

The order is an expansion on a previous order issued in April, requiring masks and face coverings in public spaces inside. The order now requires people to wear masks or face coverings while outdoors.

The exclusions to the use of masks apply only to those with respiratory conditions that make it difficult to cover their mouth and nose, people doing strenuous activities, such as jogging, and children under the age of 2, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.

Sprint 5G is no more, as T-Mobile focuses on its own network - TechCrunch

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:44 PM PDT

A day after formally completing the sale of Boost, Virgin and other Sprint prepaid networks to Dish, T-Mobile is pulling the plug on Sprint 5G. The move is one in a long list of issues that need sorting out in the wake of April's $26.5 billion merger. And like a number of other moves, it's set to leave some customers in the lurch.

The end of Sprint's 2.5 GHz 5G comes as T-Mobile opts to focus on its own network. T-Mobile already started the process in New York City, a few weeks after the merger and has since completed it in a handful of other cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.

As CNET notes, while most of the Sprint 5G handsets won't be able to make the transition, Samsung Galaxy S20 5G users are in the clear here. For everyone else, T-Mobile is offering up credits on leases for new 5G handsets.

T-Mobile told TechCrunch in a statement, "We are working to quickly re-deploy, optimize and test the 2.5GHz spectrum before lighting it up on the T-Mobile network."

Along with the sale of Boost, 5G was a big selling point for T-Mobile's Sprint acquisition. The carriers argued that the deal was necessary to keep them competitive with first and second place carriers AT&T and Verizon when it came to the next-generation wireless technology.

At the time FCC chairman Ajit Pai agreed stating, "This transaction will provide New T-Mobile with the scale and spectrum resources necessary to deploy a robust 5G network across the United States."

Earlier this week, OpenSignal awarded T-Mobile the top spot in availability, noting, "In the U.S., T-Mobile won the 5G Availability award by a large margin with Sprint and AT&T trailing with scores of 14.1% and 10.3%, respectively."

Update: The language of the post has been updated to reflect the impact on specific unsupported devices, rather than user base figures.

De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world – Guardiola - Goal

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:42 PM PDT

Pep Guardiola has described Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne as the best midfielder in world football.

Liverpool's first outing as Premier League champions proved one to forget as Guardiola's dethroned City ran out 4-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium.

De Bruyne slotted home a 25th-minute penalty after Joe Gomez fouled Raheem Sterling, who doubled the home side's advantage against his old employers 10 minutes later.

Phil Foden made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain turned Sterling's shot into his own net to complete the scoring.

The latter two goals featured typically precise De Bruyne passes in the build-up and the Belgium midfielder underlined his case for being the Premier League's outstanding player against unquestionably the division's outstanding team this season.

"He is a really good player. A really, really good player. He has something unique," Guardiola told reporters afterwards.

"He can run, the vision he has. The personality he shows right now, scoring four penalties in a row when we struggled this season with them.

"Right now in the midfield position is the best.

"Of course he can get better. How? He knows it."

Foden was again worthy of praise within the supporting cast, with the England Under-21 midfielder's assured finish bringing his fourth goal in three Premier League outings since the resumption.

"What we have done is try to protect him," Guardiola said.

"Don't let him play every single game. Young players have to be careful in the first steps.

"He has an incredible thing that makes me convinced for the next decade he will be an incredible player.

"There is not one day when he has had a bad face for not playing. In training sessions, every single action is positive. Every one – look forward, don't regret.

"He is a huge competitor, he is a guy who scores incredible goals, so fast, defensively so strong.

"It's a reality that he played at Old Trafford, he played here. Against incredibly top teams he was there, always playing at a high level.

"I don't want to say anything wrong, but Gareth Southgate has an incredible talent for the national team in his hands. I saw many players in my life, training with incredible players and Phil will be one of them."

Foden's fellow academy graduate Eric Garcia returned to action after suffering a concussion in the 3-0 win against Arsenal and recovered well from a shaky start at centre-back, after Mohamed Salah hit the post during a deceptively strong Liverpool start.

Article continues below

"He played against Salah and [Sadio] Mane. He's 19, he had a kick against Arsenal, was training for three or four days after 10 days out and he was awesome," Guardiola added.

"He doesn't make mistakes. He is always focused, he guides the line, he knows what he has to do.

"As a club, we are so proud to have Phil and Eric. We can count on them, without a doubt."

MIAMI-DADE ISSUES COVID-19 CURFEW, REQUIRES MASKS AT RESTAURANT TABLES - BocaNewsNow.com

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

DEATH OF 11-YEAR-OLD BOY IN MIAMI-DADE IS CATALYST

Boca Raton News

MIAMI, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — The following was just issued by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez:

Starting Friday, July 3, 2020, Miami-Dade County will have a 10 p.m. countywide curfew until 6 a.m. daily. I will be signing the order later tonight. It will take effect until further notice.

Essential workers, among them first responders, hospital workers, food delivery services and media will be exempted from the curfew.

This is one of various actions I'm pursuing to tamp down this spike of COVID-19 and protect our residents.

I am also rolling back the reopening of entertainment facilities, such as movie theaters, arcades, casinos (with the exception of tribal casinos, over which the County does not have jurisdiction), adult entertainment, concert houses, bowling alleys and other establishments that have recently had their plans approved by the County. I will be signing that order as well tonight.

People going to restaurants will also have to keep their masks on while seated at their table — removing the mask only to eat and drink. If you are waiting for your meal at a restaurant table, keep your mask on while having a conversation with those around you.

I met with our medical experts this afternoon to discuss what other steps we can take to stop the spread of virus infection and ensure that our hospitals have sufficient capacity. At this time, we have plenty of beds, but some hospitals are experiencing staffing shortages.

Hospitals are also experiencing an uptick in patients, and our medical professionals are seeing a rise in 18-to 34-year-olds who are getting extremely sick.

I agree with my medical advisers that young people and their parents are not taking seriously the New Normal rules.

The death of an 11-year-old boy, reported today by the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, should send a signal to all of our community that this virus can attack anyone without mercy.

We can only tamp down the virus if everyone takes personal responsibility and follows the rules. That means practicing social distancing, staying away from crowds and wearing masks everywhere you go in public, whether inside or outdoors.

This curfew is meant to stop people from venturing out and hanging out with friends in groups, which has shown to be spreading the virus rapidly.

I also want to remind everyone that there can be no gatherings of more than 10 people, and that all must be wearing masks and practicing social distancing of at least 6 feet.

As July 4th weekend approaches, Miami-Dade County Police will be out checking on thousands of businesses and closing those that violate the rules and capacity limits for their establishments. Owners will face criminal fines of up to $500 and 180 days in jail. We are also going to bring a civil violations proposal to the County commissioners for approval.

I do not want to go back to closing all but essential businesses, but the only way to avoid that is for everyone to take COVID-19 seriously. That means every generation – everyone of us, no exceptions.

'Willian would be a wonderful fit for Arsenal' - Chelsea likely to let midfielder join a main rival, says Wise - Goal

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Chelsea are likely to allow Willian to join a main Premier League rival this summer, according to Dennis Wise, who admits the midfielder "would be a wonderful fit for Arsenal".

Willian has been a key member of Chelsea's senior squad since being snapped up from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, racking up over 300 appearances for the club in all competitions.

41 of those have been made this season, with the Brazilian managing to contribute 10 goals and seven assists to the Blues' cause from the middle of the park.

Willian has agreed a short-term contract extension which will see him remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season, which has only just resumed following a three-month hiatus caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The 31-year-old has been offered the chance to sign a new two-year deal beyond that, but he is holding out for an extra year, and could end up walking away from the club as a free agent in August if no compromise is reached.

Although Wise would prefer to see Willian move abroad if he does leave the Bridge, he concedes that the experienced playmaker would be an ideal signing for Chelsea's London rivals Arsenal.

When asked to discuss the prospect of an influential figure joining either the Gunners or Manchester United, the ex-Blues midfielder told Stadium Astro: "Well, I wouldn't want him to go to any of them, I've got to say because it'll be competition for Chelsea. Go to Italy please, Willian. Go away.

"I think he'd be a good fit for anyone; Arsenal, I think he'd be a wonderful fit for them. That's the sad thing about it, we'll let him go to an opposition who wants to compete.

"We have to replace him with more, we have replaced him but we will [need] a lot more because we'll be depending on only two when you want more.

"I think Pedro is going to go as well, so we're going to lose two wide men. We'll be disappointed to lose him as well. When you look at the quality that's going, Chelsea have got to look for quality to come in."

Willian scored twice in Chelsea's 3-2 defeat at West Ham on Wednesday, becoming the first player in Premier League history to score in every calendar month in the process.

Wise thinks the Brazil international still has plenty more to offer at the highest level, but understands that the Blues may look to ship him out as Frank Lampard continues to build a new-look squad.

"I would love Chelsea to keep him but I think Chelsea look at his age, and I think that comes into the equation," the former England international added. "They look at his age. Yes, they probably would extend by a year but they won't give him three, and this is why he's got an opportunity elsewhere to take a longer contract.

Article continues below

"It'll be disappointing because I've got to say he's had some wonderful years at Chelsea and he is a quality player as you've seen tonight [against West Ham].

"He's still got so much ability to give. It'll be sad to see him go. 'I think that's why Chelsea are building already to try to replace Willian with other personnel, and that's what they are going to have to do.

"Once you take him out, with the quality he has, the assists that he gives, the goals he gives, you're taking a big chunk of it out [of the team]. We'll miss him when he goes, he's been a wonderful talent for Chelsea."

Arteta issues Arsenal 'selling club' warning and stays tight-lipped on Partey - Goal.com

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal should never have to sell their best players just to raise transfer funds.

The financial implications brought on by the coronavirus pandemic are expected to make transfer dealings difficult for all clubs this summer, with Arsenal set to be particularly hit because of their £230 million ($290m) wage bill and continued absence from the Champions League.

That has led to many believing they will need to sell players first before getting business done, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette ad Matteo Guendozui all being linked with moves away.

While he admitted the club is facing an uncertain time as it approaches the transfer window, Arteta is adamant that selling key names just to bring others in shouldn't be an option.

"We cannot be a team that has to sell his best player to try to bring in and improve our squad, that's for sure," said Arsenal's head coach.

"We don't know how the market is going to be. We have seen different things. The way that Chelsea is dealing with the market is different to rest at the moment, but Bayern Munich as well they've have been really aggressive.

"Obviously we are putting different plans together to see what we are going to be able to do. At the moment the uncertainty is still big. The way we are going to finish the season will dictate a lot of things financially as well. We have to be a bit patient and see what happens."

Thomas Partey Atletico Madrid 2019-20 GFX

One player Arsenal are widely expected to make a move for once the window opens is Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey. The Ghana international is believed to be open to a switch to north London this summer, but Arteta was giving nothing away when pressed on his interest.

"I cannot talk about interest or players that play for any other team that is not ours," he said.

The future of Aubameyang will dominant the headlines as the window approaches, with the Gunners' top scorer having now entered the final year of his current Arsenal deal. Talks with the frontman have yet to reach an agreement, with Aubameyang admitting the decision to stay or go will be the biggest of his career.

Arteta stated after Wednesday night's 4-0 win against Norwich, in which Aubameyang scored his 50th and 51st Premier League goals, that he was positive the striker would sign a new deal.

When asked to reveal why he was optimistic, the Spaniard added: "It's the way I feel, the way I communicate with him, the conversations I have with him, with the people around him and the energy that I sense.

Article continues below

"It's just my opinion things change in football very quickly, but when you ask me in this moment about Auba's future, I feel that he wants to continue with us and keep helping us to be a better team."

Arteta added: "He needs to feel like he belongs somewhere that he believes we can achieve the goals that he has individually and collectively. He's very settled in the city, his family are settled here as well and he's loved, respected and admired by his team-mates, which is a huge thing to have in any football club.

"That's what gives me positivity and as well I see the enjoyment that he's having, the workmate he puts in all the time and the decisons he makes every time. So that's where my feelings are coming from."

Ighalo strike nominated for Manchester United Goal of the Month award - Goal.com

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Odion Ighalo's strike against Norwich City has been nominated for Manchester United Goal of the Month award for June.

The 31-year-old forward has been in fine form since joining the Red Devils in January on loan from Chinese Super Lig side Shanghai Shenhua.

Against Norwich, the former Nigeria international was handed his 12th appearance and scored a sublime goal to help Ole Gunnar Solskjær's men secure a place in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

The former Watford marksman opened the scoring in the encounter when he volleyed home from close range, leaving goalkeeper Tim Krul with no chance.

The strike is the forward's fifth goal since teaming up with the Old Trafford outfit and has now been shortlisted for the best goal award in the month under review.

Ighalo will compete with Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, who beat him to the Player of the Month prize in March, and Mason Greenwood for a chance to scoop the award for the second time.

The forward won the accolade in March when his brilliant strike against LASK in a Europa League game was adjudged the best effort in the month.

Ighalo was handed a loan extension by the Old Trafford outfit last month following his eye-catching performances which have endeared him to the Red Devils fans.

The forward enjoyed great success in his first spell in the Premier League as he scored 36 goals in 90 league appearances for Watford during his three-year stay with the side.

The striker also showed his consistency in front of goal for Chinese sides Changchun Yatai and Shanghai Shenhua before making a stunning switch to the Old Trafford.

Ighalo will hope to open his Premier League account for the Red Devil when they square off against Bournemouth on Saturday, having failed to find the back of the net in his last seven league matches.

Florida reports record-breaking 10,109 new cases of COVID-19 - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:08 PM PDT

Ahead of a long holiday weekend, some counties and cities across Central Florida are tightening safety guidelines and instituting face mask mandates to help curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

On Thursday, the Florida Department of Health reported a record-breaking 10,109 new cases of COVID-19 since the same time the day before, as well as 67 new Florida-resident deaths, 1 new non-resident death, and 325 new hospitalizations.

The new statistics bring the total number of coronavirus infections to 169,106 since the virus was first detected in the state on March 1, as well as a total of 3,617 resident deaths and 15,150 hospitalizations.

On Wednesday, the FDOH began reporting resident and non-resident deaths as separate categories. The state reported a total of 3,617 resident deaths and 101 non-resident deaths Thursday, for a cumulative total of 3,718 deaths.

The new method of reporting COVID-19 related deaths across the state comes as Sen. Linda Stewart tweeted Wednesday that the state may take a new approach to reporting hospitalizations as well.

As of Thursday, the state does not report the number of current patients in hospitals with the coronavirus, but rather the overall total since the virus was detected in the state. The FDOH also does not share the number of individuals who have recovered from the disease after being diagnosed, however, this may soon change according to Stewart.

Here's how cases of coronavirus break down locally by Central Florida county:

Ahead of the Independence Day weekend, some counties and cities are making face masks mandatory for everyone who enters a public space. Many of these mask mandates have no enforcement procedure or penalty for non-compliance and do not apply to those who may have medical conditions that wearing a mask would exacerbate.

The city of New Smyrna Beach approved a face mask mandate Wednesday, following Daytona Beach's lead. Neither city will enforce mask use with fines or penalties, however. While both cities approved the mandate, Volusia as a whole has not approved required face mask use county-wide.

City officials in DeLand and Titusville are expected to meet Thursday afternoon to discuss the possibilities of issuing a mask order as well.

Osceola, Orange and Seminole counties all require face masks to be worn while in public spaces.

"I think we all have a responsibility to not put any of our seniors or anybody who's medically fragile in jeopardy with our own conduct and so I would just tell people, be very cautious with that," Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a news conference Wednesday.

While many Americans have canceled their summer vacation plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some are still taking to the skies for the Fourth of July weekend.

A spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration said that officers screened 626,516 people at airports nationwide Wednesday and that the TSA expects Thursday to be the busiest travel day for the holiday weekend.

Allegiant Air is now requiring travelers to wear a face mask for the duration of their flight, while American Airlines resumed booking flights to capacity Wednesday. The airline had previously left a middle seat open between passengers to help distance guests, but airline officials said they would notify travelers if they were booked immediately next to another traveler.

In a brighter spot amid profound economic hardship for many Americans at the hands of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US Department of Labor reported Thursday that the economy nationwide saw an added 4.8 million jobs in June and a decrease in the national unemployment rate of 11.1%, down from 12.3% the month prior.

Floridians continue to experience issues and difficulties while trying to apply for unemployment benefits through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Based on the DEO's dashboard that was updated as of June 30, the state has received 2,569,304 confirmed unique claims for unemployment benefits and has paid 1,604,550 of those claims. The DEO dashboard shows the state has paid $8.3 billion to claimants.

US Congress passes bill to sanction China over Hong Kong - TRT World

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:08 PM PDT

The legislation imposes sanctions on Chinese officials engaged in a crackdown on Hong Kong. It also penalizes banks doing business with Chinese officials who implement Beijing's new national security law on the semi-autonomous city.

US Congress has approved a bill rebuking China over its crackdown in Hong Kong amid protests against a strict "national security" law that outlaws so-called subversive or terrorist acts, as well as collusion with foreign forces intervening in the city's affairs.

Critics say the new law effectively ends the "one country, two systems" framework under which Hong Kong was promised a high degree of autonomy when it reverted from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

The US legislation would impose sanctions on groups that undermine Hong Kong's autonomy, including police units that have cracked down on Hong Kong protesters, as well as Chinese Communist Party officials responsible for imposing the new security law.

The bill also imposes sanctions on banks that do business with entities found to violate the law.

The Senate gave final legislative approval to the measure on Thursday, a day after the House approved it. It now goes to the White House.

'Betrayal of the international agreement'

The White House declined to comment, but in a television interview on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence called the new Hong Kong security law a betrayal of the international agreement China signed.

"President Trump has made it clear that we're going to be modifying our trading relationship and the trading status with regard to Hong Kong and we're going to continue to speak out on behalf of the people of Hong Kong and on behalf of human rights of people within China," Pence told CNBC.

Senator Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., a co-sponsor of the Senate bill, said passage of the "Hong Kong Autonomy Act" makes it clear that the United States "will not stand by as China seeks to crush freedom, human rights and democracy in Hong Kong."

The Chinese government "is already flagrantly using their new authorities to punish and imprison those who have stood up against the recent implementation of their sweeping national security law," Van Hollen said.

"Our legislation mandates severe consequences on those who participate in this unconscionable repression."

Senator Pat Toomey, R-Pa., the bill's other lead sponsor, urged Trump to sign it into law. "With our bill, the CCP will learn there are ramifications for repressing Hong Kongers' freedom," Toomey said, referring to the Chinese Communist Party.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also praised the sanctions bill as "an urgently needed response to the cowardly Chinese government's passage of its so-called national security law."

Lawmakers from both parties have urged the Trump administration to take strong action in response to the crackdown by China against the former British territory, which was granted partial sovereignty under a treaty that took effect in 1997.

"More and more authoritarian"

Hong Kong's fate shows China's true authoritarianism so the rest of the world should stand up to President Xi Jinping and start to put human rights above financial gain, activist Nathan Law told Reuters.

"The protests in Hong Kong have been a window for the world to recognise that China is getting more and more authoritarian," Law told Reuters via internet video.

Law, 26, left Hong Kong this week. He declined to disclose his location.

Law called on the international community to put human rights above the financial interests of trading with the world's second largest economy and to "multilaterally deal with the China issue in a more assertive way."

"It is important we prioritise human rights issues over trade when we deal with China," he said.

China prepares 'strong countermeasures'

Ahead of the Senate vote, China promised to take "strong countermeasures" if the US presses ahead with tough new sanctions.

"We urge the US to grasp the reality of the situation, stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and implementing the negative bill, otherwise we will take strong countermeasures," said foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.

Sanctuary calls

Former colonial power Britain has said the law breaches Beijing's "One Country, Two Systems" promise to grant Hong Kongers key liberties – as well as judicial and legislative autonomy – until 2047, a promise made as the city was handed back to Beijing in 1997.

As a result, London has announced plans to allow millions of Hong Kongers with British National Overseas status to relocate with their families and eventually apply for citizenship.

"We will live up to our promises to them," Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told parliament.

That has infuriated Beijing, which says Britain promised not to grant full citizenship rights to Hong Kongers ahead of the handover.

"We firmly oppose this and reserve the right to take corresponding measures," China's embassy in London said Thursday.

'Arbitrary'

The security law is controversial because it radically increases China's control over Hong Kong.

Beijing says it is needed to quell seething anti-Beijing protests and restore order after a year of political unrest.

But critics fear it will usher in a new era of political repression given similar laws are routinely used to crush dissent on the Chinese mainland.

China says it will have jurisdiction over some cases and has empowered its security agents to operate openly inside Hong Kong for the first time, unconstrained by local laws .

It has also claimed global jurisdiction, saying the law covers national security offences committed overseas -- even by foreigners.

Some trials will be held behind closed doors and without juries, while local police have been granted sweeping surveillance powers that no longer need judicial sign off.

The influential Hong Kong Bar Association said the law dismantles the legal firewall that has existed between Hong Kong's judiciary and China's Communist Party-controlled courts, a key plank of the city's reputation as a business hub.

The new national security offences were "widely drawn", the group said, and "are capable of being applied in a manner that is arbitrary, and that disproportionately interferes with fundamental rights, including the freedom of conscience, expression and assembly".

It also criticised "the total absence of meaningful consultation" with Hong Kongers before the law was passed.

China dismissed the association's concerns, and said their claim the law lacked meaningful consultation was "totally unfounded".

Couple charged with assault after viral video shows them pulling gun on Black mom, daughter | TheHill - The Hill

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:47 PM PDT

A husband and wife were charged with assault Thursday, one day after allegedly pulling a gun on a Black mother and her two daughters amid an alteration in Oakland County, Mich.

Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper charged Jillian and Eric Wuestenberg with one count each of felonious assault, a four-year felony, the Detroit News reported.

Sheriff Mike Bouchard announced in a Thursday news conference that the suspects were charged after being arrested Wednesday outside of the Chipotle restaurant where the incident occurred.

A now-viral video shows Jillian Wuestenberg allegedly pointing a gun at a Takelia Hill, who was in the parking lot with her 15-year-old daughter Makayla when the confrontation began.

The confrontation began after Makayla said that she asked the woman to apologize for bumping into her. Before Jillian Wuestenberg allegedly drew the gun on Hill, the mother and daughter can be seen calling for an apology and calling the woman "racist" and "ignorant."

The incident escalated as the couple began to drive away. She can be seen exiting the vehicle, drawing a gun at Hill and saying "get the f--- away" and "Don't you f------ jump behind my car."

Eric Wuestenberg can allegedly be seen in the video saying "Who the f--- do you think you guys are?"

At the Thursday press conference, Bouchard played 911 calls that came in amid the incident. One was from the woman holding the gun in the video saying that she felt threatened. Other calls from employees at Chipotle and other bystanders described a white woman aiming a gun at several black women.

Bouchard said both the husband and wife had legal handguns and concealed pistol licenses. The charges are based on them threatening Hill and her daughters. He added that the sheriff's detectives investigating the case were "presented with two very different stories from two different groups, with both sides claiming they felt extremely threatened."

Eric Wuestenberg previously worked as a coordinator for veterans support services at Oakland University, according to the Detroit News. The Michigan university confirmed that he was fired following the incident, saying that "We have seen the video, and we deem his behavior unacceptable."

The Hill has reached out to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office and Oakland University for comment.

COVID Numbers Break New Record With Over 10,000 Cases - Bay News 9

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

STATEWIDE — Another record has been broken as the Florida Department of Health reported that there are more than 10,000 new cases on Thursday.

What You Need To Know

There are 10,109 positive cases reported on Thursday, stated the department, with 67 new deaths and 325 hospitalizations.

The previous record of daily coronavirus cases reported by the health department was on Saturday, June 27, with 9,585 cases.

Various parts of the Tampa Bay and Central Florida areas saw a range of numbers that were reported on Thursday. Orange County, one of the hardest-hit areas, saw 584 new cases reported on Thursday. The day before, it was 560 and on Tuesday, it was 300.

This week, Polk County saw the numbers increasing and on Thursday it was 279.

Seminole and Volusia counties have been very similar to the number of cases and on Thursday that was the same case as Seminole County reported 155 and Volusia County had 153.

On Thursday, the department reported one new death for each of the following counties: Orange County, Osceola County and Lake County.

Statewide hospitalizations are also up, with 15,150 in total.

However, some areas are seeing lower coronavirus numbers and health experts are crediting a large portion of that to more people are wearing face masks.

"It is going to be critical to slow down the pandemic in our county. It's the only tool that we have in our toolbox right now short of a cure or a vaccine," explained Orange County Health Officer Dr. Raul Pino.

Meanwhile, at least 21 Publix supermarket stores in the Orlando area have at least one associate who tested positive for coronavirus.

Publix confirmed they also have COVID-19 cases at stores in Seminole, Volusia, Lake, Osceola, and Sumter counties. The grocery chain says all of their employees who test positive are getting 14 days' paid leave so they can quarantine.

Publix stated it will continue to enforce protective measures in its stores.

'Just keep running' - Ighalo explains how he can boost Manchester United's attack - Goal

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Odion Ighalo believes he has different qualities to Manchester United's other strikers which will enable him to boost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's attack.

The Nigerian has scored five goals in four starts since arriving on the final day of the January transfer window, and while the 31-year-old has impressed with his own goal tally, he explained he has been given a different role to play in order to help his teammates.

"If you can't touch the ball or you can't do anything with the ball, you have to unsettle the defenders so your other teammates can move and do something with the ball. It's what I was trying to do in the first half against Norwich when I wasn't getting too many balls," Ighalo explained to United Review.

"Just keep running, keep putting pressure on them and making them make mistakes so you can have other channels for the players to go into."

Ighalo, who had his loan deal extended until January 2021, has previous Premier League experience with Watford, however he believes he is a better player now than the one who left Vicarage Road in 2017.

"I think I've gained more experience now and I push my game a little bit more than when I was at Watford," Ighalo said.

"I think I'm even stronger now than I was then and have a bit more fighting ability now to give, plus I have the experience to do what it takes on the field to score goals and to help the team. I feel I have improved from then to now.

"You have to keep the mentality the same, work hard and take the chance when it comes. You play for the team, even if you don't score a goal, you can give an assist and work for the team. That's the most important thing because it's a team game."

Article continues below

Ighalo's strength and tendency to play with his back to goal gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a different option and with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood all in good form the 31-year-old is relishing being part of a squad with so much talent.

"Martial is very skilful, he's a direct striker. He likes to play with the ball at his feet. Rashy likes to run in behind. I think I bring different things to the strikers we have," Ighalo said.

"I can play with my back to goal, I can keep the ball. I'm strong so it's different, you know, and for the different games, we play different patterns and with different strategies. So, it's good to have different types of striker in order to accomplish what you want."

Liverpool humbled at Man City with worst first-half display in five years since 6-1 defeat at Stoke - Goal

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool were brought down to earth with a bump on Thursday when they fell three goals behind at half-time in a Premier League game for the first time in five years.

Jurgen Klopp's side have spent the past week celebrating the club's first title win in 30 years, secured courtesy of Manchester City's defeat at Chelsea, meaning only pride was on the line when the Reds travelled to the Etihad Stadium to take on the side they had just deposed as champions.

Liverpool certainly played like little was riding on the game during the first 45 minutes. City, in contrast, performed like they wanted to send a message to Klopp's side ahead of their title defence next season, racing into a 3-0 half-time lead.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for Pep Guardiola's side from the penalty spot after Raheem Sterling had been hauled down by Joe Gomez. The Belgian has now been involved in 30 goals in his last 31 Premier League appearances, consisting of 12 goals and 18 assists.

Sterling then got on the scoresheet himself from Phil Foden's pass, his first Premier League goal against his former club in his ninth appearance against them. England Under-21 international Foden then made it 3-0 to City shortly before the break with a fine finish from De Bruyne's pass.

It was a bruising 45 minutes for Liverpool and the first time they have been 3-0 down at the break since a 6-1 thrashing at Stoke on the final day of the 2014-15 season, in what was captain Steven Gerrard's final game for the club.

Brendan Rodgers was Reds boss that day, though he would only be in the job for another four months, with Klopp succeeding the Northern Irishman in October 2015.

It is testament to the progress made under the German that Liverpool have rarely come close to suffering a similar result since.

The Champions League, Premier League, Super Cup and Club World Cup trophies have all been secured over the past two years, with Klopp signalling his determination to build a trophy-laden dynasty at Anfield.

Their horror first half at the Etihad matters little in the context of this season, but suggests Liverpool will face a real fight if they are to hold off City make it back-to-back titles next campaign.

Hong Kong's future unsettled as China tightens the leash - Harvard Gazette

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:08 PM PDT

Sweeping new national security legislation giving Chinese authorities powers to quash demonstrations and punish dissenters sparked protests in Hong Kong on Wednesday, the 23rd anniversary of the transfer of the territory from British to Chinese control. The new law, which includes 66 articles, was unveiled Tuesday evening and criminalizes any acts of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign powers, with a maximum sentence of life in prison. The far-reaching measure also allows Beijing to create a security agency that will have the authority to overrule Hong Kong's legal system and enforce the new rules. The move has raised questions about the fate of the semiautonomous territory and global financial hub whose political and economic freedoms were guaranteed by a transition agreement between Britain and China that runs until 2047. The Gazette spoke with James Robson, the James C. Kralik and Yunli Lou Professor of East Asian Studies and director of the Harvard University Asia Center, about what the future holds for Hong Kong under the new law.

GAZETTE:  Do you think this is the end of liberty and self-governance in Hong Kong?

ROBSON:  This new national security law certainly looks like a substantial threat to the autonomy of Hong Kong as Beijing asserts more control. The specifics of the new law should be understood in the context of previous protest movements that occurred, for example, in 2003, 2012, the "Umbrella Movement" of 2014, and of course the massive protests of 2019. All of those had achieved some success in countering mainland attempts to have greater influence in Hong Kong. Based on a quick reading of the new law, which came out on the eve of July 1, traditionally a day of large public gatherings, it is directed at ensuring there is not a repeat of what attracted worldwide attention exactly a year ago. You had millions of people peacefully protesting in the streets, but then you began to see increasingly violent incidents. If you think back, a year ago today was the storming of the Legislative Council Complex in Hong Kong, a protest that really changed the tenor of things.

GAZETTE:  What was the stated rationale for the move?

ROBSON:  So, from the Chinese perspective, and I think even in terms of what [Hong Kong chief executive] Carrie Lam herself has been saying, this new legislation is being portrayed as an attempt to restore law and order. That violence, in other words, has been used as a pretense for this new national security law. The new law specifically bans things like subversion, sedition, and collusion with foreign governments (who were alleged to have fanned the flames of violence). Ostensibly the law is directed at the most violent and radical protesters, especially those advocating independence, but the language is so vague that there is a palpable fear that it will be applied generally and broadly. The issue is what the interpretation of those acts will be once these appear as cases in the court system. It could be that even small acts like peacefully carrying a sign are punished severely. I think the first arrest made after the law was announced was someone who was just displaying a poster advocating Hong Kong independence. The new law will be chilling for civil protest movements and mass mobilizations, and it will also have knock-on effects for the independent free press (some journalists are already asking to have their previous publications erased), the publishing industry, higher education, the use of social media, and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

James Robson.
"Young people in Hong Kong are going to be hitting midlife right at the time when the final handover and transition is set to happen in 2047, and they are seeing a very bleak future or no future at all for themselves," said James Robson, director of the Harvard University Asia Center. GAZETTE:  Is there any outside power that might be able to sway China in terms of its actions in Hong Kong, or are Beijing officials unconcerned with what other nations think?

ROBSON:  That's a really good question. I think it would be very unlikely for them to be swayed. I read a striking quote by Zhang Xiaoming, deputy chief of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, who said: "No one knows better than us how to cherish" the current accord, dubbed One Country, Two Systems. "What does this have to do with [them]? … The time that the Chinese people have to please others has passed." I thought that was really telling. Not to mention there has already been some outside pressure. The U.S. has spoken up (rather tepidly); the E.U. has spoken up. Canada has weighed in because this is deeply connected to the Huawei extradition case and the Canadians who have now been tried. And it seems nothing has had any suasion on China. Still, there is a kind of regional and global response. The U.K. has said it would take in some 3 million people from Hong Kong, allowing them to work under special visas. Japan has also attempted to attract foreign professionals and specialized workers from Hong Kong by loosening up regulations on the path to permanent residency in a bid to make Japan a financial hub in Asia. South Korea and Singapore are also hoping to establish themselves as new financial centers. Taiwan is also another important player here that has also opened its doors to people from Hong Kong.

GAZETTE:  You mention Taiwan, considered a breakaway province by China that it ultimately wants to bring back under its control. How do you see this new security rule affecting Taiwan?

ROBSON:  At the Harvard Asia Center last year we ran a large panel discussion about the Hong Kong protests, "Repercussions: The Hong Kong Protests in Context," and Steven Goldstein (an associate at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies) spoke to the very quick impact that the response to those protests had in Taiwan on their elections. Basically, it changed the whole dynamic in Taiwan. And so Taiwan is looking at Hong Kong and looking at itself and thinking about what its future is going to be and how it will maintain its democracy. So I think there's inevitably going to be some kind of impact within Taiwan on domestic politics, vis-à-vis Hong Kong.

GAZETTE:  What kind of additional reaction could you anticipate from the United States?

ROBSON:  United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has come out and denounced this, particularly the issues of an independent kind of judiciary and rule of law, and the U.S. has suspended the regulations affording preferential economic treatment to Hong Kong over China. At the same time, members of the Trump administration are probably having to think very long and hard about how to respond in the face of escalating problems in the U.S.-China relationship writ large, in particular what they're trying to do with the trade agreement and what the long-term impact of that is going to be. So, I think they're really in a hard place in terms of how to negotiate this, but there does not seem to be much will to challenge China on human rights and democracy in Hong Kong. Some in Congress have, however, tried to introduce legislation that will allow skilled professionals from Hong Kong to enter the United States.

GAZETTE:  Hong Kong has long had a reputation as a global financial hub. How will this new rule of law affect that?

ROBSON:  When you had the handover in 1997 there was quite a reaction in terms of people moving to new countries; there was a major exodus. But then, for some time, it seemed as if things were going along pretty well and that Hong Kong had maintained its financial stature. I think the protests last year started to call some of that into question. I sense there are going to be new efforts by some people to leave Hong Kong. I'm not a specialist of the business world, but I think that once the ability to operate in a place that had such beneficial structures for financial institutions is called into question, the business community will begin to vote with its feet and move out. We saw some of that last year. I remember during those protests seeing reports of substantial sums of capital that were being moved out of Hong Kong to Singapore, to Korea, and to Japan as well. The new moves by those countries to set themselves up as financial centers signal longer-term challenges for Hong Kong.

GAZETTE:  How do you see this new crackdown affecting young people in Hong Kong?

ROBSON:  Young people in Hong Kong are going to be hitting midlife right at the time when the final handover and transition is set to happen in 2047, and they are seeing a very bleak future or no future at all for themselves. They're in a complete transformation of life and that, I think, has caused some real sense of despair and perhaps even a kind of desperation to try to act now to do something to ensure certain types of liberties for themselves. This is also going to have a discernible ripple effect on universities, their academic freedom, and their ability to teach particular subjects and how they teach them. As far as I understand the law, it has the potential to influence the content of what's being taught at universities, which really does look to be an attempt to try to control intellectual freedom.

GAZETTE:  Do you think that the threat of that kind of brain drain could make Beijing change course?

ROBSON:  My quick answer to that is that no. We've seen how Beijing or the Chinese government responds after instituting certain types of measures, even amid substantial protests or critique. For example, the condemnation of the situation of the detention of more than a million Muslims, predominantly Uighurs, in western China. If that doesn't put pressure on them to make any changes, then then I think something like this would be very unlikely to. In addition, some are trying to argue that this is going to create opportunities for Hong Kong because they see this new legislation as restoring law and order to the streets of Hong Kong, and they see it as a new opportunity for Hong Kong to be successful and grow. I personally find that to be a rather skewed view.

GAZETTE:  How do you think the people of Hong Kong will adapt to these new restrictions?

ROBSON:  I will be really interested to see what happens over the next days, weeks, months, even years perhaps, and watch the creativity in terms of the response to this new law. While there have been some immediate adaptations by those who have dismantled political parties, deleted their social media accounts, and curtailed their participation in public protests, one of the things that's really impressed me over the years of the protest movements in Hong Kong, and also even small-scale ones in China, is the creativity of the youth who come up with things that are totally unexpected by the authorities. And so watching how that creativity comes about, and then seeing what that dynamic looks like, will be interesting. We may even see a new round of protests. If the protests stay peaceful, they have a better chance of making an impact. I do fear the effect these new laws will have on the different mechanisms of civil society in terms of the ability for protest groups, NGOs, and others, to really operate, even through peaceful protests, without quickly falling into the trap of these vague laws that can be interpreted such that small things can be considered seditious or subversive acts that lead to long prison terms. Even more insidiously, I wonder what's going to be happening in the court system. That element is particularly disconcerting, since this new law appears to threaten the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Interview was lightly edited for clarity and length.
