Board chair suggests May 22 or earlier for return

Meeting on the evening on May 4, the Currituck County Commissioners did not make a decision about when to open to visitors, but Chairman Bob White said that, “We’re going to have announcement within a day or two.”

White added that there is an expectation that Governor Roy Cooper — who has talked about starting a Phase One opening of the state when his current Stay-at-Home order expires on May 8 — will also make an announcement on that front, perhaps even as early as Tuesday, May 5.

Discussing an open date for visitors, White stated that “the twenty-second [of May] is a date that’s been kicked around, Memorial Day weekend…I’m certain we’ll be open by then.” He added that any final decision would occur after the governor’s announcement and pending discussions with officials of Dare County.

The subject of cooperation with Dare County was also part of the conversation at the May 4 Currituck Commissioners meeting. Back at their April 20 meeting, those commissioners approved allowing non-resident property owners to enter the county on April 23 and tentatively decided to open to visitors on May 15 — decisions that appeared to have surprised Dare County officials.

The next day, the Dare County Control Group announced its own timetable, deciding that non-resident property owners could access Dare county starting May 4, while offering no date for visitor entry.

On April 27, Dare County officials issued a statement saying that the Currituck Commissioners had agreed to rescind their May 15 visitors entry date and that the two counties “will work together to coordinate entry for visitors to the Outer Banks.”

Addressing that issue at the May 4 Currituck Board meeting, White acknowledged that, “yes, Dare County was caught off guard, but this board is not beholden to Dare County.”

During Monday night’s meeting, several commissioners also spoke out against what they saw as unwarranted hostility aimed at non-resident property owners by some locals.

“There has been a lot of anger directed at these people,” White asserted. “To alienate them is reprehensible.”

That sentiment was echoed by Commissioner Mary Etheridge, who added “that for people to act like they don’t want people here — it breaks my heart.”
