The Voice finale: About Thunderstorm Artis 'Sedona' original... - CarterMatt

Thunderstorm ArtisTonight on The Voiceyou are going to see the final performance show of the season! Not only will the top five be taking on covers, but there are also some original songs that will be coming your way. Think of this as an opportunity to better understand who some of these artists will be on the outside world once this show is done.

Want more video discussion regarding The Voice? Then watch what we've got at the bottom of this article! Once you do, subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube and then view our series playlist — we'll have additional coverage throughout the week.

For the sake of this article, the focus is on Thunderstorm Artis, the last remaining artist from Team Nick Jonas, and his original song "Sedona" — a powerful, emotive piece that speaks a lot to how he connects to his music. This is a song that Artis put together long before participating on the show — you can hear an early version of it from around eight months ago below. This gives you at least a reasonably good sense of what it will sound like, and we think that he is going to make the most of this at-home setting to deliver something intimate and beautiful. We think having that personal songwriter touch should help him get all the way to the finish line.

Will it help him win the show? We think that there is a reasonable chance that it could. Granted, we've thought for a while that Thunderstorm is the favorite to win the whole show — he's such an original and we're not entirely sure that anyone has taken advantage of the unusual format of the season quite like him. This should register a lot with a number of the fans that he has found over time.

We'll find out precisely what the public thinks about "Sedona" following both tonight's episode and the results, which are coming your way on Tuesday night.

It's down to the Final Five.

Monday's episode of "The Voice" marked Part 1 of the live remote finale, which host Carson Daly called "by far our most memorable finale in 'Voice' history" as the coronavirus pandemic forced the NBC singing competition to go virtual over safety concerns.

Despite technical difficulties with Nick Jonas' microphone (which created an awkward pause), "The Voice" put on an impressive finale with state-of-the-art production that brought the contestants together virtually from across the country into one seamless broadcast.

"We are supposed to be socially distancing and you just touched millions of people," said Blake Shelton, who called in from his quarantine safe haven in Oklahoma.

Last week on 'The Voice': After shocking Top 5 reveal, Blake Shelton's team has advantage going into finale

The only thing that separated one of the top five finalists – CammWess, Micah Iverson, Thunderstorm Artis, Todd Tilghman and Toneisha Harris – from hoisting the "Voice" trophy was two final performances.

Each artist was tasked with performing a cover and an original song. Each coach is represented in the finale, but Shelton has a slight advantage with two finalists, both of whom are four-chair turns.

Here's what happened during Monday's finale:

John Legend's CammWess

The South Carolina native, who received a two-chair turn in the Blind Auditions, kicked off the show with an emotional performance of Prince's "Purple Rain."

It's the first time the song has ever been covered on "The Voice," after John Legend secured special clearance from Prince's estate for his artist to perform it on the finale. CammWess called performing Prince, his "all-time favorite artist," with guidance from Legend, his favorite living artist, "poetic justice."

And CammWess didn't disappoint. He pulled off an effortless production, complete with a fog machine, purple haze and his buttery vocals, from Blythewood, South Carolina.

"When Prince's estate reached out to me and said, 'Will you vouch for this guy?' I felt very, very comfortable vouching for CammWess and you can see why," Legend said, appearing from Los Angeles. "He did a beautiful job with that song."

Later in the night, CammWess performed an original song called "Save It for Tomorrow," which encouraged listeners to save their worries for another day when they are better able to handle them.

"It's a really good song. It's instantly catchy. I can hear it on the radio right now," Legend said. "It just feels like he's ready to be an artist, he's ready to make music that the whole world sound be listening to."

Blake Shelton's Todd Tilghman

Shelton's first four-chair turn of the season performed a cover of MercyMe's gospel song "I Can Only Imagine" at the front of his empty Meridian, Mississippi, church. The pastor dedicated the song to his wife of 21-years and their eight children.

Tilghman's vocals moved Kelly Clarkson to tears: "I would love to come to your church just to hear you talk, let alone sing."

Tilghman said his original song, "Long Way Home," it reminds him that it doesn't matter how long it takes to reach your goal as long as you accomplish it, much like the 41-year-old's blossoming singing career.

Shelton said Tilghman "breathed so much life into (the original song) that it just feels familiar." He added, "That's your gift. That's how easy it is for you to speak to the audience."

Kelly Clarkson's Micah Iverson

The Indie-pop artist's performance of his original song, "Butterflies," channeled a music video, with graphics filling the background as he sang from his home in Atlanta.

The three-chair turn said he picked the heartbreak anthem because he could hear it on the radio today, and the judges agreed.

"I don't think there's ever been a more perfect song in the finale just to lead you in to what you are going to do," Clarkson said from Montana. "I cannot wait to hear this on the radio."

For his cover, Iverson took on Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," another first on "The Voice." Clarkson explained that the alternative rock band has "never cleared the song for 'The Voice,' so that says a lot."

Clarkson raised her wine glass in celebration after he hit his closing note. She added, "You make every song easy. You make it sound like it's effortless."

Nick Jonas' Thunderstorm Artis

Although he's from Hawaii, Artis chose to write about Arizona in his original song, "Sedona." The four-chair turn said he was inspired by his love of escaping the state's popular beaches for the mountainside, adding that he saw a picture of Sedona in a magazine.

Jonas could be seen lip-syncing along remotely along to Artis' mesmerizing voice. "I am so incredibly proud of you for that performance. You are a true artist through and through," his coach said from Los Angeles.

He closed the show with a touching performance of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." The coaches applauded Artis' perfectly timed message of hope amid the coronavirus.

"I wake up each day … in this time when we've been quarantined at home and try to find ways to stay encouraged," Jonas said. "I am so grateful you brought that message to the world."

Blake Shelton's Toneisha Harris

Harris, who received four chair-turns during the Blinds, showed off her powerhouse vocals on Journey's "Faithfully," a cover that represents her "full-circle" journey.

The Georgia native was set to audition for Season 2 of "The Voice," but abruptly canceled after her son, Trenton, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 12. "We watched that season from his hospital room," Harris reflected after showing Shelton her audition pass from 2011.

"There were times that I felt like I had to choose between family and music. This song brings it all full circle," she added. "Watching my son in his hospital bed and now watching my son help me set everything up for this second chance – this is a moment that I wasn't sure I would actually get."

Shelton called it her "best performance of the entire season."

But leave it to Harris to one-up herself. She did just that while performing her original song, "My Superhero." Harris wrote the emotional ballad two weeks after her son was diagnosed with cancer, with lyrics including: "You hold on. You're not alone. I'll fight with you. I will stand with you."

Harris cried during her closing notes. Clarkson wiped away her own tears.

Legend said, "You've told us about this journey you've been on. … Everything happened the way it should happen."

The winner of Season 18 of "The Voice" will be revealed during Tuesday's two-hour finale (8 EDT/PDT).

Chemist tests 'viral' beauty hacks to see whether they really work - Daily Mail

Chemist tests 'viral' beauty hacks to see whether they really work - from using aspirin on pimples to hair masks made from whipped cream

  • Chemist Michelle Wong is behind Lab Muffin Beauty Science on YouTube
  • The Sydney-based beauty buff decided to test 'viral' cosmetic hacks online
  • She liked the nail art using hairspray but was less enthused by glitter eyeshadow
  • She cautioned against using activated charcoal to freshen your breath overall
  • But was onboard with using whipped cream as a hair mask in theory

An Australian scientist has given her honest opinion about 'viral' beauty hacks circulating on the internet and revealed whether they actually work or not.

Chemist Michelle Wong, who is the face behind YouTube channel Lab Muffin Beauty Science, reviewed a video put forward by 5-minute crafts containing 40 of the strangest DIY cosmetic creations on the market.

While some of them do work in practice others were more dangerous than they originally seemed, and are best approaching with caution.

1. Creating nail art out of hairspray, a bowl of water and varnish

This technique involves pouring a small amount of nail varnish into a bowl of water and letting it 'pool' into a large puddle.

You then spray the puddle with hairspray or perfume so that gaps appear. Place the finger you want to colour into the puddle and when you pull it out there will be some art on your chosen nail.

'This is a legitimate nail art technique that I've used before. The only thing I'm a bit worried about is that they use a gel polish, so it might be one that you need a UV light to set,' Ms Wong said.

'If you're going to do this hack it's safer to use a normal nail polish with it.'

2. Aspirin as a pimple treatment

There are plenty of DIY beauty videos on the internet that claim crushing up Aspirin in water and making a paste, before smearing it over a pimple, will help alleviate the inflammation.

Aspirin is an acetylsalicylic acid. Normally a salicylic acid is used to gently exfoliate dead skin and clear out pores, making it a long-term acne preventative.

It's not chemically known whether the acetyl aspect of the Aspirin is able to convert into salicylic acid on your skin - although it is able to in your digestive system - but it likely has some 'anti-inflammatory properties' when applied to the face, Ms Wong said.

The safest option is to find a salicylic acid ointment that is made to be applied on the skin, rather than trying to apply a highly concentrated acid Aspirin paste in the same way.

3. Mixing Vaseline and glitter to make a DIY eyeshadow.

If you combine Vaseline or petroleum jelly with glitter, microwave the mixture for two minutes and then apply it to your eyelids it becomes a beautiful - and bold - eyeshadow.

But there are a few things to be careful of with this beauty hack, Ms Wong said, namely with placing anything containing glitter this close to your eyes.

'Some glitters are made of little flakes of metal. Metal is sharp and your eyes are fragile,' she said.

If a piece of glitter falls onto your eye it can scratch the delicate cornea, leading to a nasty infection.

On top of this petroleum jelly doesn't have a very good staying power and is very greasy, so the likelihood that the eyeshadow would be able to stay on for lengthy periods of time is unfathomable.

It's far safer to buy a gold eyeliner and draw on flecks, like glitter would make, if that's the overall makeup look you're going for.

4. Using whipped cream as a hair mask

The 5-minute crafts hack of rubbing whipped cream into your hair for 20 minutes as a smoothing treatment isn't the worst idea, Ms Wong said.

'Pretty much any oil is going to help with dry hair but I do think it's a waste of perfectly good whipped cream,' she said.

Coconut oil, sunflower oil and olive oil work in a similar way although you will need to properly shampoo and conditioner your hair after letting it set to remove the greasy texture.

5. Using pomegranate tea to remove dark eye circles

The method for making this infusion is very simple, you'll just need to place a pomegranate tea bag in hot water, add gelatin and refrigerate until the mixture is like jelly.

Then you simply hold it over your face like a face mask to brighten your under eye circles.

While pomegranate fruit does contain antioxidants, in tea form it's probably not as strong as if you were to eat it fresh, and as it's sitting in a 'jelly lump' it's going to be difficult for any antioxidants to reach your skin in high concentrations.

6. Using activated charcoal to freshen your breath

Mixing pure activated charcoal and water into a paste and rubbing it all over your teeth and tongue is proven to reduce bad breath.

However the charcoal doesn't contain fluoride like regular toothpastes do, which hardens your teeth, and the tiny flecks might actually scratch the surface of your enamel.

Brushing your teeth and tongue with a regular toothbrush should remove bacteria that causes bad breath.

China could shape any result in its favor by putting off the WHO investigation until after the pandemic - CNN

Posted: 18 May 2020 11:54 PM PDT

More than 100 countries had signed onto a resolution calling for an independent probe into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. While the language in the document was thoroughly diplomatic, and did not call out any particular country, it grew out of a push by Australia to look into China's own failures in the initial stage of the crisis, and went against Beijing's stated desire for any investigation to be run by the World Health Organization (WHO) itself.
Chinese officials previously described Canberra's proposal as "highly irresponsible," and accused Australian officials of undermining global efforts against the virus. But when Xi addressed the annual meeting of WHO members, he took a more conciliatory tone: of course China was willing to support an investigation into the virus -- once the pandemic is over.
After praising the international response and "extraordinary synergy in the fight against Covid-19," Xi said that "China supports the idea of a comprehensive review of the global response to Covid-19 after it is brought under control to sum up experience and address deficiencies."
"This work should be based on science and professionalism, led by WHO and conducted in an objective and impartial manner," he added.
In this, he was playing the long game, providing China's government multiple ways of avoiding any potential future fallout from a coronavirus investigation.

Independent vs. impartial

Despite his apparent magnanimity, Xi did not really concede anything Beijing hasn't said in the past. Chinese officials have previously supported a WHO-led probe into the virus and its spread worldwide -- one that was inevitable given the importance of its potential findings to fighting the next pandemic.
But "objective and impartial" is not the same as independent, and a WHO-led investigation is hardly likely to mollify critics of either China or the organization itself -- the chief complaint being that top WHO officials are too close to Beijing. The risk is that the findings of such a body could be rejected by some observers and member states.
At the same time, given the complexity and global nature of any such probe, its difficult to imagine it happening outside the remit of the WHO. These are not necessarily irreconcilable issues: in theory an investigation could be set up with the support of the WHO but sealed off from any potential influence, free to pursue its own avenues of inquiry and publish findings without any fear of political ramifications. Plenty of governments have organized inquiries into themselves, overseen by judges or other apolitical figures, with often damning results.
Of course, the difference between running a global investigation -- one that potentially angers multiple superpowers -- and looking into something potentially embarrassing for a few elected politicians is stark. There are plenty of ways members of a supposedly independent team could come under political pressure from their own governments or employers, or through the public comments of those being looked into. Few would envy those who have to put their names to the eventual report, which is likely to be critical of many, many governments beyond just China's.
China may also be able to influence who gets to sit on the investigation team, through nominating those likely to be sympathetic to Beijing or pressuring allies to do so. In his speech, Xi emphasized the support China is providing other countries in responding to the coronavirus crisis -- a political debt Beijing may be able to collect on in future.
His government has also moved to demonstrate the potential ramifications of taking on China, imposing new trade tariffs on Australia in apparent retaliation for the country's recent moves over coronavirus.

Delaying the inevitable

Even with a theoretical perfect investigative team, one free of any political pressures or considerations, Xi's conditions for a coronavirus probe could play in Beijing's favor.
The pandemic has left China in one of its most vulnerable positions in terms of global influence, with criticism from multiple directions, not just traditional rivals like the US, but also countries with which Beijing has had strong ties in the past. One only need look at the never before seen levels of public support for Taiwan around the world to see how China's clout is considerably weakened.
In part, this reduced influence is caused by widespread anger over Beijing's perceived failures with regard to the pandemic, but also the corresponding economic slowdown, which has made China less able to wield access to its vast market or manufacturing base as a weapon against reticent allies.
Any delay in a coronavirus investigation could see both these issues change dramatically. It could be years before the pandemic is brought under control -- while severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was deemed contained in mid-2003, its cousin Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) remains an issue, as does Ebola. Scientists have already warned that the coronavirus could become a perennial infection, and that vaccines may yet prove ineffective in containing it.
Waiting until, in Xi's words, the pandemic is "brought under control to sum up experience and address deficiencies," could be a long wait indeed.
By that time, China's position globally could be vastly changed. The country's economy has begun to reopen, and as it does it will become even more important to many of its trading allies, who have fewer partners to choose from right now. Beijing is also not blind to the potential opportunity to emerge from the crisis not weakened but stronger, taking advantage of how the crisis is affecting the US and the attractive sheen it is putting on China's own brand of authoritarian control for some governments.
A comprehensive investigation into the coronavirus will likely take years to complete. Any further delay on that could make the findings, whatever they are, more inconsequential.
China's critics may see a probe as a potential means of holding Beijing to account for failures that may have helped lead to a global pandemic, but how willing will they be to act on such findings if they come in 2025? Or 2030?
By then, the economic pragmatist argument that always shapes relations with China will once again be in play, and countries will be less willing to rock the boat by taking on Beijing. Political pressure at home will also have shifted to other issues, and the public may not support politicians upsetting a major trading partner over some virus from years before.
China's standing has been majorly damaged by the pandemic. But Xi Jinping is going to be around for potentially decades to come -- his speech to the WHO suggests he knows the likelihood of any potential investigation hurting him in the long run is likely very slight.

Donald Trump Reveals He's Taking Anti-Malarial COVID Drug For Over A Week - NDTV

Posted: 18 May 2020 11:54 PM PDT

Washington:

President Donald Trump on Monday made the surprise announcement that he is taking hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug that his own government experts say is not suitable for fighting the novel coronavirus.

Trump, noting that he has tested negative for the virus and shows no symptoms, said he'd been taking the drug as a preventative measure for about a week and a half.

"I take a pill every day," he said, adding that he combines this with zinc.

Asked why, he said: "Because I think it's good. I've heard a lot of good stories."

Trump has shown interest for weeks in promoting the use of hydroxychloroquine, even if some doctors think it does not work for coronavirus patients and US government regulators warn it has "not been shown to be safe."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it's "not a good idea" for Trump to be taking the drug as a potential treatment for the coronavirus.

"I would rather he not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists, especially in his age group and in his, shall we say, weight group, which is morbidly obese, they say," Pelosi said during an appearance on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."

"So, I think that it's not a good idea," she added.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump's decision to take the drug "reckless."

"It gives people false hope, has people avoid real medical attention, and can actually cause them trouble. It is just dangerous what he did," Schumer said on MSNBC.

Trump's latest remarks came out of the blue, immediately grabbing headlines on a day when US deaths from COVID-19 topped 90,000 people -- almost a third of the total world toll.

"You'd be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the front-line workers, before you catch it. The front-line workers -- many, many are taking it. I happen to be taking it," he let slip to reporters attending a White House meeting devoted to the struggling restaurant industry.

"I'm taking it, hydroxychloroquine, right now, yeah. A couple of weeks ago, I started taking it," he said.

Trump has often played down the dangers of coronavirus, including last week when he said it threatened only a small number of people. He also pointedly refuses to wear a mask, despite federal recommendations to do so and the fact that most of his staff have taken to covering their faces in public.

A personal valet to Trump has tested positive for the coronavirus, as has Katie Miller, Vice President Mike Pence's press secretary.

'Reckless'

Trump said his use of the medicine was approved by the White House physician, Sean Conley. However, Trump insisted that he, not the doctor, took the first step.

"I asked him, 'what do you think?' He said, 'if you'd like it.' I said 'yeah, I'd like it.'"

Conley later issued a statement saying that he had agreed to Trump using the anti-viral drug "after numerous discussions" between them about the pros and cons.

"We concluded the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risk," Conley said.

Trump said he has received many "positive calls" from people, whom he did not identify, telling him about the malaria drug. He mentioned a letter he'd received from a New York doctor, also unidentified, who reported giving the medicine to hundreds of patients and "I haven't lost one."

By contrast, the government's Food and Drug Administration warns against giving hydroxychloroquine for either prevention or treatment of the coronavirus, noting reported side effects including "serious heart rhythm problems in patients with COVID-19." Only emergency use is authorized under temporary rules.

Earlier this month, a medical paper out of New York suggested that combining hydroxychloroquine with the dietary supplement zinc sulfate, which has antiviral properties, could create a more effective treatment against coronavirus.

But Matthew Heinz, an Arizona doctor who served under Barack Obama's government, said medicines like hydroxychloroquine are not "benign" and open for unregulated use.

"I cannot stress enough how reckless it is to encourage anybody to take hydroxychloroquine or any other unproven remedy," he said in a statement.

Trump signalled, as he has throughout the crisis, that there was nothing to lose by trying possible treatments.

"It seems to have an impact, and maybe it does, maybe it doesn't but if it doesn't, you're not going to get sick or die," Trump said. "I take a pill every day. At some point I'll stop."

The president said again on Monday that he showed "zero symptoms."

"Every couple days they want to test me, you know, for obvious reasons. I mean I am the president, so they want to test me. I don't want to be tested but they want to test me," he said. "I've shown always negative."

Ronaldo's 'extraordinary strength of character' hailed by PSG president Al-Khelaifi - Goal.com

Posted: 18 May 2020 11:43 PM PDT

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has explained his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo.

In an interview no doubt destined to spark a fresh round of transfer rumours, the PSG chief hailed the Juventus forward's "extraordinary strength of character".

Ronaldo is about to return to training, having arrived back in Turin from Portugal as the Serie A season looks to get back underway.

"Year after year, he shows a unique determination, an extraordinary strength of character," Al-Khelaifi told France Football.

"He remains motivated by this desire to improve every day and he always pushes his limits.

"I admire this relentless will; he is a great example for all athletes of the future."

The French capital has been suggested as a possible destination for Ronaldo in the past, with PSG keen to acquire some of football's biggest names.

Perhaps their most significant signing of their modern era was Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored 156 goals in 180 games for the club after joining from AC Milan in 2012.

"Thinking back to all the players who have joined us since the beginning of our ambition with PSG, I could still highlight the time of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his character, his leadership, his charisma and his ability to get things done," Al-Khelaifi noted.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic David Beckham PSG

"He was always reliable, and when the situation demanded something from him, he knew how to stand up to the challenges of the moment."

Monday marks seven years to the day since David Beckham played the final game of his professional career, with a memorable farewell for PSG at the Parc des Princes.

The England legend spent half a season in Ligue 1 at the tail-end of his career, returning for a final spell in Europe after his time at LA Galaxy.

According to the president, Beckham played a key role in transforming PSG into the superclub they are today.

"I must also quote David Beckham. Although he was only at PSG for a short time, he had a transformative effect on our club.

"His investment in training, his concern for applying every detail at every moment, his determination to succeed, his taste for teamwork and his natural aura were extremely precious assets."

Serie A suspension extended to June 14 - Goal

Posted: 18 May 2020 10:43 PM PDT

Serie A will remain suspended until at least June 14, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed.

The Italian top flight has been on hold since March 9 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It had been hoped it would be clear to resume on June 13, which clubs selected as the target return date last week.

They returned to team training on Monday after receiving permission from prime minister Giuseppe Conte.

However, the authorities declared on Monday that the league will now not be able to restart until June 15 at the earliest.

The FIGC's decision is in alignment with that of the Italian government, with a prime ministerial decree suspending "sporting events and competitions of all types and disciplines, in public or private places" until June 14 as part of "urgent measures to contain the contagion throughout the national territory".

There have been nearly 226,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Italy with over 32,000 deaths.

Italy recorded 99 new deaths on Monday, its lowest daily toll since early March.

While teams are back in training this week, Parma announced on Saturday that two of their players have been placed in quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19.

The following day, Inter revealed that all of their players, coaches and staff tested negative for the virus.

There are 12 weeks left to the Serie A campaign and reigning champions Juventus sit top of the table with a one-point lead over Lazio, while Inter are a further eight points adrift in third place.

While the season was cancelled in Belgium, Netherlands and France, the rest of the continent's top divisions are hopeful of finding a way around the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bundesliga became the first major European league to resume when games started again on Saturday, while Serie A, Premier League and La Liga are all working towards a return.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said recently that he expects the rest of the season, including the Champions League and Europa League campaigns, to be completed by August.

"We have an idea but we have to wait for the executive committee of UEFA to confirm the dates. I can say that the European season will be finished, if everything is as it is now, in August," Ceferin said.

"As things look now, I'm sure that we can finish the European season and this means UEFA competition."

Trump says he takes hydroxychloroquine to prevent coronavirus infection even though it's an unproven treatment - CNBC

Posted: 18 May 2020 09:54 PM PDT

President Donald Trump said Monday that he has been taking anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine for over a week to prevent coronavirus infection even though it is not yet a proven treatment.

"I happen to be taking it," Trump said during a roundtable event at the White House. "A lot of good things have come out. You'd be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the front-line workers. Before you catch it. The front-line workers, many, many are taking it."

He added: "I'm taking it, hydroxychloroquine. Right now, yeah. Couple of weeks ago, I started taking it. Cause I think it's good, I've heard a lot of good stories."

Trump also said that he is taking zinc, and that he has taken an initial dose of azithromycin, or Z-Pak.

White House physician Dr. Sean Conley released a memo Monday evening, which said that after discussing evidence for and against hydroxychloroquine with Trump, they concluded "the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks."

Conley's memo said that as previously reported, a member of Trump's staff had tested positive for coronavirus. "The president is in very good health and has remained symptom-free. he receives regular COVID-19 testing, all negative to date," Conley said.

He added that he continues to monitor the different studies investigating potential Covid-19 therapies in consultation with subject matter experts across the country, and anticipates "employing the same shared medical decision making based on the evidence in hand in the future."

Hydroxychloroquine, which has been repeatedly touted by Trump as a potential game-changer in fighting the coronavirus, is also often used by doctors to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Numerous clinical trials are looking to see if it's effective in fighting the coronavirus, but it is not a proven treatment yet.

Trump, meanwhile, refuses to wear a mask, which medical experts have advised as a way to limit the spread of the virus.

Trump's comments come weeks after the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about the drug, saying it became aware of reports of "serious heart rhythm problems" in patients with the virus who were treated with the malaria drug, often in combination with antibiotic azithromycin. It also comes as Trump has been criticized for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, including from former President Barack Obama.

Hydroxychloroquine, which is available as a generic drug and is also produced under the brand name Plaquenil by French drugmaker Sanofi, can have serious side effects, including muscle weakness and heart arrhythmia. A small study in Brazil was halted for safety reasons after coronavirus patients taking chloroquine, which hydroxychloroquine is derived from, developed arrhythmia, including some who died.

Last week, another study published in the JAMA Network found the drug appeared to not help Covid-19 patients and, instead, placed them at increased risk of cardiac arrest.

In March and early April, Trump frequently referenced hydroxychloroquine and other potential treatments for the disease. He also discussed the drugs with influential figures including Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison and "Dr. Oz" talk-show host Mehmet Oz, a regular Fox News guest.

But by late April, after multiple studies on the drug had been halted and after an FDA warning, Trump was rarely mentioning the medicines unless asked about them.

Experts and political leaders alike say that the U.S. won't be able to recover from the pandemic until a vaccine is widely available.

Trump said Monday he asked his White House physician about the drug. "I asked him, 'What do you think?' He said, 'Well, if you'd like it.' I said, 'Yeah, I'd like it. I'd like to take it.'"

Even though it hasn't been approved to treat coronavirus, doctors can give the drug to patients in a common and legal practice known as "off-label" prescribing. "Off label" means the drug is being used for an ailment not yet approved by the FDA.

Trump said Monday that if the drug wasn't good he'd "tell you." He said he's gotten "a lot of tremendously positive news on the hydroxy, and I say hey — you know the expression I've used, John? What do you have to lose?"

"I'm not gonna get hurt by it. It's been around for 40 years," he said. "For malaria, for lupus, for other things. I take it. Front-line workers take it. A lot of doctors take it — excuse me, a lot of doctors take it. I take it."

He said he doesn't own stock in the company that produces the drug, adding he wants "the people of this nation to feel good."

"I don't want them feeling sick. And there's a very good chance that this has an impact, especially early on," he said. "I take a pill every day. At some point I'll stop. What I'd like to is I'd like to have the cure and or the vaccine and that'll happen I think very soon."

"It seems to have an impact, and maybe it does, maybe it doesn't," he continued. "But if it doesn't, you're not going to get sick or die. This is a pill that's been used for a long time, for 30, 40 years."

Xi's speech upholds the vision of building a global community of health for all and demonstrates China's sense of responsibility amid the crisis, according to the scholars.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Experts and scholars across the world spoke highly of Chinese President Xi Jinping's Monday speech at the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA), hailing his proposals are of great importance to promote global cooperation in the pandemic fight.

Addressing the opening of the WHA session via video link, Xi announced concrete measures to boost global fight against COVID-19, such as providing international aid and making the country's COVID-19 vaccine a global public good when available.

According to the scholars, Xi's speech upholds the vision of building a global community of health for all and demonstrates China's sense of responsibility amid the crisis.

Ren Minghui, assistant director-general for Universal Health Coverage/Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO), said Xi's speech is visionary and pragmatic, which once again demonstrates China's firm belief in building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Xi not only talked about how to effectively prevent and control the spread of the disease, but also on support for economic recovery and social development of the affected countries, especially developing countries, as well as for the WHO's actions, Ren said.

Nadhum Ali Abdullah, an Iraqi analyst from Baghdad-based think tank Arab Forum, said Xi's speech at the WHA sent a message that "the mankind has a common destiny, and that China is opening its doors to international cooperation to combat this pandemic."

Igor Shatrov, deputy director of Russia's National Institute for the Development of Modern Ideology, said the coronavirus pandemic is a "serious test" in which "humanity must realize that we live in a single world and have a common destiny, so it should unite in the face of a global threat."

Noting that China's efforts are particularly remarkable amid the pandemic, Sylwester Szafarz, former consul general of Poland in the Chinese city of Shanghai, said, "They are aiming at sharing valuable Chinese experience and expertise, modern equipment and highly qualified medical personnel with numerous other nations in need."

Adhere Cavince, a Kenyan researcher of international relations with a focus on China-Africa relations, said that global health governance requires urgent strengthening, adding that "such cooperation can only take place when countries deal with each other in an honest, transparent, and reciprocal manner."

French writer and sinologist Sonia Bressler pointed out that Xi's speech confirms "an opening of China to the world and a shared and collective responsibility."

Noting China's support and help to African countries in the fight against the pandemic, she said the brotherhood is necessary, demonstrating Xi's Chinese vision of "Tianxia," which "means we all live under the same sky." ■

Check out the companies making headlines after the bell.

Moderna — The biotech company's stock fell 2% in extended trading after Moderna announced that it is proposing a public offering of $1.25 billion in shares of common stock. The company's stock soared nearly 20% and hit a 52-week high earlier on Monday after Moderna announced that its potential Covid-19 vaccine produced coronavirus antibodies in all 45 participants in an early-stage human trial.

Baidu — The Chinese technology company's stock rose 8% in extended trading after Baidu released its first-quarter earnings. The company said it had earnings of $8.84 per share on revenue of $22.55 billion, exceeding Wall Street's expectations. Analysts polled by Refinitiv expected earnings of $4.00 per share on revenue of $21.93 billion.

Disney — Shares of the entertainment giant dropped 1% in extended trading after key announcements were made regarding the company's leadership. Social media platform TikTok announced that Kevin Mayer, Disney's head of streaming, will become its new CEO as well as chief operating officer of ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok. Mayer was considered to be a prime candidate to replace former Disney CEO Bob Iger, but the position ultimately went to Bob Chapek. Chapek previously served as chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products and Disney announced Monday that he will be succeeded by Josh D'Amaro, who most recently served as president of Walt Disney World Resort.

T-Mobile — The wireless company's stock dipped 3% in extended trading after news broke that SoftBank is selling part of its T-Mobile stake through a secondary offering. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs will underwrite the offering, sources told CNBC. T-Mobile's stock previously hit a 52-week high on Monday.

SmileDirectClub — Shares of the teledentistry company were up more than 1% in extended trading after SmileDirectClub announced that it filed a $2.8 billion lawsuit against NBCUniversal. Indonesia rules out easing Covid-19 restrictions soon - MENAFN.COM

Posted: 18 May 2020 06:54 PM PDT

(MENAFN - Gulf Times) Indonesian President Joko Widodo yesterday said that the government would not ease restrictions to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus any time soon.
'There's no plan to loosen PSBB (large scale social restrictions] soon, Joko told a cabinet meeting. 'It is mistaken to think that that the measures have been eased.
Speculation that the government is taking steps towards reopening the economy emerged last week after the head of the country's Covid-19 task force said residents aged 45 and under could be allowed to return to work.
Traffic in the capital, Jakarta, has also been busier in recent days ahead of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim festival marking the end of the Ramadan holy month.
Large parts of the country have been under partial lockdown since the first Covid-19 cases were reported in early March.
Experts warned that it is too early to reopen, saying that the curve has yet to flatten.
'Letting people go to work with the assumption that they are not likely to die based on hospital data is bad policy, said Pandu Riono, an epidemiologist at the University of Indonesia.
'They naively ignore the fact that asymptomatic people have infected other people and potentially become active
spreaders, he said.
The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Indonesia rose to 18,010 yesterday, after 496 new infections were recorded in the past 24 hours, said Achmad Yurianto, the task force's spokesperson.
Forty-three additional deaths recorded overnight brought the number of fatalities to 1,191, he said.

There's another deadly virus outbreak in the U.S., but this one is killing thousands of wild rabbits. It started in New Mexico in March and has since spread to Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, California and Mexico. It poses a fatal threat to pets as well as wild animals.

The illness is caused by Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus type 2 and does not affect humans or other animals, only rabbits, hares and perhaps pikas, a rabbit-like animal, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is not a coronavirus.

This is the first outbreak of the virus in wild rabbits in North America, but there have been other, smaller outbreaks among domestic rabbits in Ohio, Washington and New York, and in feral rabbits in Canada — pets that have escaped or been released and continue to breed. The pet and feral animals are descendants of European rabbits, not native to North America.

Ralph Zimmerman, the state veterinarian in New Mexico, where the new outbreak started, said its origin is unknown. But, he added, imported domestic rabbits are one possibility; the disease was first identified in France in 2010 and spread throughout Europe and later Australia, where it swept the continent in about a year and a half. An outbreak at a New York veterinary clinic in March of this year killed 11 pet rabbits.

"We hear rumors of underground rabbit transport, and there are folks that do import rabbits from Europe," Dr. Zimmerman said. "So our concern is that somebody brought them in, they were carrying the virus during transport. If one of them died, they pitched it out and boom, we infect the wild rabbits and away we go."

Not much can be done about wild populations of rabbits, Dr. Zimmerman said. Many die, and some survivors that are resistant to the virus repopulate the area. How much of the wild population dies will determine the impact of the disease on predators that rely on rabbits.

The virus is a variant of the original R.H.D.V., which emerged in China in 1984 and spread through Asia, Europe and North and South America. When it escaped in Australia, scientists there were studying it for possible use in controlling rabbit populations. It has been killing rabbits in Australia ever since, although R.H.D.V. type 2, the new virus, took over and became the dominant strain.

It is both highly infectious, and extraordinarily sturdy. According to the federal National Wildlife Health Center, it can survive several months in dry conditions, lives through freezing and can be spread by rabbits, their pelts or their meat, or anything that has come in contact with them, including insects. Often, rabbits simply drop dead.

The disease poses a serious danger to domestic rabbits. Last year the agriculture department estimated that nearly three million U.S. households had about 6.7 million pet rabbits. There is a vaccine for the disease approved in Europe, and states, in concert with the agriculture department, can approve its use, which has happened in New Mexico, Dr. Zimmerman said.

Doses of the vaccine will be delivered to veterinarians, whom pet owners should contact if they want to vaccinate their pets. The agriculture department has information for rabbit owners about the disease on its website, as does the House Rabbit Society, a rabbit rescue and education organization.

But vaccine approval could come too late for a rabbit owners, because there must be a confirmed rabbit death in order for a veterinarian to begin applying for emergency approval in any given state, said Anne Martin, executive director of the House Rabbit Society.

And like any virus, this one has an incubation period; by the time rabbits begin to die, the virus is already spreading, and the vaccine still must then be imported once the approval paperwork is done.

To be safe, rabbits, like people, need to be isolated. There are also other precautions to take, Ms. Martin said, because the virus can survive for so long, but "the biggest risk to rabbits is if they are outside or they have any outdoor playtime."

The best approach if the outbreak has reached your region of the country is to keep your pet rabbits inside, alone and craving sunshine, just like you.

  • Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber's charity duet "Stuck With U" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
  • Tekashi 6ix9ine's new single "Gooba" debuted at No. 3, behind Doja Cat's "Say So" at No. 2.
  • The rapper had accused Grande of somehow purchasing the No. 1 spot on the chart and manipulating Billboard's sales tracker.
  • "They bought 30,000 units with six credit cards," he said in a video. "Six credits cards. Now, again, you're gonna enjoy your No. 1. Explain how you buy 30,000 with six credit cards?"
  • Grande replied in a lengthy Instagram post, strongly denying the accusation: "to anybody that is displeased with their placement on the chart this week or who is spending their time racking their brain thinking of as many ways as they can to discredit hardworking women (and only the women for some reason.....), i ask u to take a moment to humble yourself."
  • Bieber added: "Nielsen company checks this and found all our sales were legit because our fans are amazing and bought them. Don't discredit our fan base with false info."

Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber have strongly denied Tekashi 6ix9ine's accusation that Grande somehow purchased the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

Grande's duet with Bieber, "Stuck With U," was released at midnight on May 8 to raise money for the First Responders Children's Foundation.

According to Billboard, the single sold a whopping 108,000 copies in its first week, earning a No. 1 debut despite weaker streaming numbers. (Billboard's formula gives physical sales more weight than streaming numbers.) Many of these sales came from physical/digital bundles, including limited copies autographed by both singers.

Tekashi 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, also dropped his latest single, "Gooba," on May 8.

It's his first new song following his release from prison last month; the Brooklyn rapper was sentenced to two years after he pleaded guilty for racketeering, illegal firearms possession, and aiding in an attempted murder, but has been allowed to serve the rest of his sentence at home because of the coronavirus.

"Gooba" debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind Doja Cat's "Say So" at No. 2.

6ix9ine has been making a lot of noise about Billboard's apparent corruption all week. Here's a breakdown of his accusations and the two singers' responses.

6ix9ine accused Grande of purchasing the No. 1 spot with 'six credit cards'

Just before Billboard announced this week's chart placements on Monday, 6ix9ine posted a video on Instagram, in which he accuses Grande of manipulating Billboard's sales tracker.

"They bought 30,000 units with six credit cards," he said, apparently referring to Grande and Bieber — though he only ever mentions Grande by name. "Six credits cards. Now, again, you're gonna enjoy your No. 1. Explain how you buy 30,000 with six credit cards?"

"It's all manipulated, it's all fabricated. You can buy No. 1s."

6ix9ine also alleged that Billboard launched an investigation into the sales of "Stuck With U," which he said confirmed his accusation.

Billboard and the Nielsen Corporation, which track music sales, only allow four sales of a song per credit card.

So even if Grande had whipped out six different credit cards to buy her own song, she would only be able to purchase 24 copies — not 30,000.

As Grande and Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, notes: "Anything above that the entire amount gets thrown out. They review that. All must be confirmed."

In the video, 6ix9ine claims that "Gooba" was streamed 50 million times, but Billboard "illegally disqualified 20 million streams."

However, it's unclear where 6ix9ine is getting these numbers. "Gooba" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Streaming Songs chart with 55.3 million US streams, according to the report released on Monday.

Conversely, "Stuck With U" debuted at No. 4 on Streaming Songs with 28.1 million — but debuted at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart.

Again, a song that sells more copies than it streams will naturally perform better on Billboard's main chart: 150 streams on paid subscription services, like Spotify Premium and Apple Music, are counted as "equal" to one pure sale.

However, Billboard also has a tiered way of measuring streams so songs that were streamed on ad-supported platforms (like YouTube and the free version of Spotify) are only worth two-thirds of a paid streaming point.

Grande called 6ix9ine out for subtle sexism and clarified: 'Numbers aren't the driving force in anything I do'

Grande had already posted a video alluding to the controversy last week. She urged fans not to get caught up in chart positions, or to lose sight of what truly matters — especially given that she and Bieber released "Stuck With U" to raise money for charity.

After "Stuck With U" officially made its debut at No. 1, Grande posted a lengthy response to 6ix9ine's accusations on Instagram.

"anyone who knows me or has followed me for a while knows that numbers aren't the driving force in anything i do," she wrote. "so with this celebration today, i would like to address a few things which i don't usually do (i don't give my energy to drama or strange accusations normally but this has gone a little too far)."

"my fans bought the song. JUSTIN'S fans bought the song. OUR fans bought this song (never more than four copies each, AS THE RULES STATE). they are ride or die motherf---ers and i thank god every day that i have them in my life."

Grande pointed out that "sales count for more than streams," and declared: "u can not discredit this as hard as u try." She also made note of 6ix9ine's curious habit of only mentioning Grande's name in his accusatory videos, never Bieber's.

"to anybody that is displeased with their placement on the chart this week or who is spending their time racking their brain thinking of as many ways as they can to discredit hardworking women (and only the women for some reason.....), i ask u to take a moment to humble yourself," she wrote. "be grateful you're even here. that people want to listen to u at all. it's a blessed position to be in."

Grande added, referring explicitly to 6ix9ine's debut at No. 3 on the chart: "congratulations to all my talented a-- peers in the top ten this week. even number 3."

Artists like Lizzo and Zara Larsson have applauded Grande for her message.

Bieber posted a message about 6ix9ine's accusation on his Instagram story.

First, the singer noted that only domestic streams of each song count towards Billboard's Hot 100 chart. He also reiterated that each credit card is limited to four copies of a song.

"Nielsen company checks this and found all our sales were legit because our fans are amazing and bought them," he wrote. "Don't discredit our fan base with false info."

"This is my song with Ariana Grande and I'm honored to work with her to help raise money for a great cause," he added. "If you gonna say her name make sure you say mine because it's our song."

Again, 6ix9ine declined to acknowledge Bieber in his video, which doubled down on his accusation that Billboard's chart positions can be purchased.

"I make this video to address Ariana," he said. "I don't want you to think that I'm coming at you. Not saying that you not talented, not saying that you can't sing. You're a beautiful singer. You just don't understand my pain. My frustration is from Billboard. I speak for the millions of kids that come from nothing."

6ix9ine continued to emphasize that he comes from a "different background," showing clips of Grande acting on Nickelodeon's "Victorious" to apparently emphasize his point.

Representatives for Billboard did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

"Stuck With U" is Grande's third No. 1 on the chart, following "Thank U, Next" and "7 Rings," both of which also debuted in the top spot.

She is now the only artist in history to have all of her first three No. 1 hits debut in that position. She's also the first artist to debut a song at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in three consecutive years.

"Stuck With U" is Bieber's sixth No. 1 hit, and also his third song to debut in that position.
