US Air Force bails on Mattis-era fighter jet readiness goal - DefenseNews.com Posted: 08 May 2020 12:59 AM PDT WASHINGTON — The U.S. Air Force has officially abandoned a directive to get its F-35, F-22 and F-16 jets up to an 80 percent mission-capable rate after failing to meet that goal in fiscal 2019, the service's presumptive chief of staff indicated Thursday. According to written responses by Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown ahead of his May 7 confirmation hearing, "the F-16 mission capable rate reached a high of 75% in June 2019, the F-22 mission capable rate achieved a high of 68% in April 2019 and the F-35 mission capability rate climbed to a high of 74% in September 2019." However, data obtained exclusively by Air Force Times and Defense News revealed the mission-capable rates for those three aircraft over the whole of FY19 — while, in some cases, an improvement over the previous year — fell well short of the 80 percent goal mandated by then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in October 2018. And the overall rates for the year were lower — in some cases, much lower — than the high-water marks cited by Brown. The Air Force's newest fighter jet, the F-35A conventional-takeoff-and-landing model, showed the most improvement, increasing from a mission-capable rate of about 50 percent in FY18 to 62 percent in FY19. The F-16 mission-capable rate grew modestly, with the F-16C increasing from 70 percent in FY18 to 73 percent in FY19. The F-16D's mission-capable rate rose from 66 percent to 70 percent over that time period. However, the F-22's mission-capable rate actually decreased from 52 percent in FY18 to 51 percent in FY19. This is likely due to the continued maintenance challenges after 17 Raptors were left behind at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, during Hurricane Michael in 2018, damaging a portion of the fleet. The Pentagon has cut the number of serious F-35 technical flaws in halfThe Pentagon is making progress resolving F-35 glitches, but new issues continue to crop up. Ultimately, Pentagon leadership decided not to renew the effort in FY20, Brown told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "The Office of the Secretary of Defense determined the FY19 80-percent Mission Capable (MC) Rate initiative is not an FY20 requirement," wrote Brown, who is currently the commander of Pacific Air Forces. Instead, the Air Force has returned to its usual practice of letting commanders set their own readiness objectives, with no definitive requirements for mission-capable rates, he said. "We continue to balance near term readiness recovery with investment long-term combat capability," Brown said. "While maintaining all of our aging fleets are difficult and expensive, we continuously examine emerging technologies, commercial best practices, and other methods to reduce the sustainment costs for our Air Force." Although the services tried to meet Mattis' 80 percent mandate, even after he resigned in December 2018, the goal was never popular among Air Force leadership. If confirmed by the Senate as the uniformed head of the Air Force, Brown will replace Gen. Dave Goldfein, who argued that the readiness of the service's aircraft inventory could better be measured by other metrics. In an interview with Air Force Times in August, Goldfein said readiness can truly be measured by how well the Air Force can carry out its missions, which requires more than mission-capable aircraft. It also requires trained and ready air crew, maintainers and other airmen as well as enough spare parts and resources, he said. Goldfein also cited increases in flying hours and pilot training as other indicators of progress. Instead of driving toward an 80 percent mission-capable rate, the Air Force is implementing a new "strategic sustainment framework" that will aim to increase readiness by improving the service's repair network and expanding the use of conditions-based maintenance, Brown wrote in his response to the SASC. The service's inspector general is also conducting a comprehensive classified review of readiness assessments across the Air Force, he said. In his hearing, Brown reiterated the Air Force's need to grow to 386 squadrons over the long term. When asked by Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., whether the Air Force is now large enough to carry out the National Defense Strategy, Brown said: "To an extent." "In the immediate term, I think we are, but we've still got to be able to grow to the 386" squadrons, Brown said. "Anything less than 386 incurs risk." However, he acknowledged the Air Force may come close but might not completely meet that goal, which was first laid out by previous Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson. But the Air Force's improved capabilities, including making better use of unmanned platforms, will help make up some of that difference, he said. "We may be a little bit smaller than 386, but we'll be more capable," Brown said. "It's not just the manned platforms; it's also how we do manned-unmanned teaming. The XQ-58 Valkyrie [combat drone] is one of those systems that we can team up with, particularly some of our fifth-gen capability to increase our range, increase our awareness, to increase our strike capability." Kuzy says his 2018 winner against Pittsburgh wasn't his biggest goal - NBCSports.com Posted: 08 May 2020 12:28 AM PDT ![]() Thursday marks the two-year anniversary of one of the greatest moments in Caps history: Evgeny Kuznetsov's overtime goal that sent the Caps past the Penguins to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since 1998 (and well, we all know what happens from there). Members of NBC Sports Washington's coverage looked back on where they were that moment that puck went into the back of the net and Kuzy's famous celly commenced. Michael Jenkins I remember exactly where I was when that happened, in fact, that's probably my favorite Capitals highlight of all time because of all of the build-up and how it happened. The bosses at NBC Sports Washington said "hey, go down to a bar in DC and hang out with Caps fans, do some interviews and watch the game," and I thought "I mean, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make." So, I went down there, of course, it's a 1-1 game and we're in overtime and when Kuzy broke away I think we all thought what Ovi was thinking … was just … score! And I didn't realize that he had scored at first when he went with the backhand, it was only until they cut away and I saw him doing the eagle that I thought, "Oh my god, he actually put it through," and then I watched the Doc Emerick call again and again and again. I think we all felt at that time, even though we weren't sure the Caps were going to win it all that this season, that season was going to be different because they had finally broken through. And sure enough, that's what happened. I also bought shots for the entire bar about an hour later… and that was awesome. Joe Beninati I like it when May 7th rolls around. Some really good things happened for the Caps on May 7th, 2018. Even better, on the 7th of June that same spring, but you couldn't have one without the other. I remember where Craig Laughlin and I were on May 7th: We were at the NBC Sports Washington studios. We were manning the desk for pregame and postgame, hanging on every word, on every play from Game 6 at PPG Paints Arena. I thought Braden Holtby deserved a medal for his performance in that game, he was incredible and richly deserved to win it. I remember almost falling out of my chair when [Tom] Kuhnhackl hit the post in overtime and then just a couple of minutes later when [Alex] Ovechkin sent Kuznetsov in on the breakaway, I can remember rising up out of my chair, you could feel the electricity in the studio, in the control room on that breakaway, here was the chance to bury the Penguins. He scores, I swear I rise up out of the chair, I probably missed 90 percent of the high five with Locker, we were so elated with that goal … and to see Kuzy fly off into the celebration, it's a memory that I will never ever forget. Rob Carlin I remember standing at the top of the like the first section of seats at PPG Paints Arena with Alan [May], and as Ovi springs Kuzy, you could just feel a silence in the building as everyone kind of sensed what was about to happen. And then he shoots, and if you remember seeing the video, Alan jumps right up on the stage. I didn't know it and I looked at him and then I did the bird celly cause I saw Kuzy do the bird celly, that was the only reason I knew the Caps had just won. I couldn't believe it, I was stunned, and the building was silent except for the Caps fans yelling and at that moment I thought, "Oh my god, they just beat the Penguins," and then my next thought was, "Oh My God, the Caps might win the Stanley Cup." CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE CAPITALS TALK PODCAST Grant Paulsen So the anniversary of Kuzy's game-winner has arrived … soon enough this guy would make the save and the Caps would be Stanley Cup champions. My memories … puck is Ovechkin's, he sends Kuzy ahead. Kuzy is out in front, I'm expecting him to be stonewalled, he goes 5-hole, you couldn't tell the puck went in right away. For a moment I don't know if he scored. Then, when I see that head drop and I know that puck is in and he's doing the bird, I remember just fighting back tears and screaming at the top of my lungs like I was on an island and I finally saw a helicopter overhead and they were coming to save me. It's one of the greatest moments of my sports life. Al Koken Well that night, I'm in our studios getting ready for our postgame show when Game 6 goes into overtime. Now, remember, I'm the guy that broadcast not one, but two Capitals playoff games that went four overtimes and the Capitals lost both. So thank goodness, Evgeny Kuznetsov didn't make us wait that long that night and certainly gave us a much better outcome. Now two of the things that always impressed me about Kuznetsov's game is his skating style and his dangle with the puck and when you watch that breakaway goal, they both are prominently displayed. His blades never leave the ice as he starts and then when he goes into that glide, he's still going so fast no Penguin can slow him down. Remember Kris Letang, the Penguins best defenseman makes a diving effort, can't stop Kuzy. Then the dangle… closes in on Matt Murray, head up all the way, see what Murray's giving him, picks his spot… bang…game… set …match. And that's just one of the reasons that I thought Evgeny Kuznetsov deserved to be the Conn Smythe Trophy winner for the MVP of the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs. Craig Laughlin May 7th was a Hallelujah moment of watching the Caps. Pittsburgh and the Caps, one of the best rivalries in the game of hockey. Caps often ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard, but not May 7th during their Stanley Cup run. What a play it was all around. What impressed me most about this… there are several things. Number one, how the Capitals played defense on their own blueline, the way Ovechkin played both sides of the puck, his defense led to offense and then, of course, Evgeny Kuznetsov's speed to beat two Penguins and then to work that deke against Matt Murray … out of this world. And what was the best thing for me, was the sound I heard in my ear after that goal went in. Complete silence, Caps win! And that to me is one of the best goals all-time for the Washington Capitals franchise. John Walton To sum up all of the feelings of what went into an overtime game-winner in Pittsburgh in Game 6, you really have to look at the big picture of that day and the history that had come before it. You're up three games to two in the series, but you're playing Pittsburgh, and that had meant bad things for a generation if you're a Capitals fan. So on that day, when there's no [Nicklas] Backstrom and there's no [Tom] Wilson and you're into overtime and your heart's in your chest and you're calling what you see in front of you and at the same time you're thinking "Could this actually be the time that you put these guys to bed?" They won back-to-back Cups and there was this emotional crescendo of all of this stuff coming together at the same time and at the same moment you are needing to be ready for what comes next. And when I saw Alex Ovechkin get the puck at the blueline I could see Kuznetsov breaking kind of out of the corner of my eye because as the play-by-play guy, you're on the puck. And you see him getting ahead from where the defensemen were for Pittsburgh, and he slipped by as you saw the puck come through center ice, you're just hoping it connects. And when you see it connect, you realize where Kuzy is, and as he broke into the zone, I know Alex said something along the same lines "Please effing score." I think that's what was going through all of our minds more or less. Could this actually be it? Could he finish it off right here? And there was that moment, just that slight hesitation, of realizing where the puck was, Murray had gone down, it goes through and you realize it's in. Truth be known, Ken Sabourin, I think, knew it a half-second before me because he starts beating me on the shoulder and he's jumping up and down, and then everything else… you almost just black out. Whatever comes out comes out and you hope as a play-by-play guy, you just want to get that moment right… and I hope I did. But it was one of the most exciting moments I have ever seen in a hockey game anywhere, whether I was watching on TV, as a fan, as a kid growing up… to be able to be in the building for a moment like that was truly spectacular. I have heard in the years that have gone by since from fans, that some who say that, "gosh, wouldn't it had been great if that could have been at home." If we could have been watching that happen at Capital One Arena as opposed to Pittsburgh, and I politely have to disagree only because to be in that building to listen to all of those people get real quiet and then file out after all of the things that had happened in the building over the years and going back to Civic Arena for that matter, it was exceptional to be able to watch that moment … the biggest goal in franchise history. I don't think there is any doubt about it. There would be bigger goals, Lars Eller yes of course in Game 5, but this one was the one you needed to get over the hump, and Evgeny Kuznetsov thankfully provided it. JJ Regan May 7th, 2018 .. Game 6 … Caps-Penguins… I will never forget that game, I will never forget watching that game. I'll never forget what it was like knowing that the Capitals had finally gotten past the Penguins. That this could be the year. Finally! I was in studio in Bethesda watching with the TV crews and when Ovechkin stole that puck and gave it to Kuzy, I've seen the Caps enough that I wouldn't believe it until I actually saw it, but I knew in that moment that they were going to do it. And you can tell that I knew and everyone in that room knew because the video of it, they took video of us watching it for our reaction. Everyone stood up, everyone leans forward towards the TV while they were watching and he scored. I don't remember anything that happened after that. Immediately after that, according to the video, me and Grant Paulsen started hugging immediately, celebrating that the Caps had finally done it. They've finally beaten the Pittsburgh Penguins. What an incredible moment I will never forget watching. And with all of these things as a writer, after the 10 seconds of pure joy and ecstasy, my thoughts immediately went to, "Oh, I got a lot of writing to do," because the Caps are headed to the Eastern Conference Finals. Georgia Southern's move to Transact Mobile Ordering - CR80News Posted: 08 May 2020 12:14 AM PDT Georgia Southern University has been providing mobile ordering to its students since 2015 and has seen nothing but strong usage and order volumes year on year. But as the university's contract with its mobile ordering provider was approaching renewal in June of 2019, the university began weighing its options. A Transact campus client, Georgia Southern has an ecosystem on campus that's well established, and any mobile ordering solution would need to integrate with that ecosystem. In July 2019, the university opted to implement Transact Mobile Ordering. Georgia Southern named the app "GATAGO" and launched with a university-branded, front-end user interface. While the prior implementation of mobile ordering worked well and was extremely popular with users, the move to Transact Mobile Ordering solved some challenges in GSU's in-house accounting reconciliation process. Additionally, Transact Mobile Ordering integrated seamlessly with both Georgia Southern's existing QuadPoint POS ecosystem and a new Eatec inventory management system. But changing providers for a service that's as popular with students as mobile ordering doesn't come without careful consideration. "We were heavily on board with our previous mobile ordering solution from Tapingo for quite a while, and it was very successful," says Richard Wynn, Director of the Eagle Card Program at Georgia Southern University. "So the concern I had was about change, and how the transition would work with our students." Were students really tied into the existing app? Would they object to using a new mobile ordering platform? These were questions that worried the team. Wynn and the team at Georgia Southern decided to ease into its transition to Transact Mobile Ordering during the summer when things on campus are somewhat slower. "Since moving to Transact Mobile Ordering, we've seen almost no issues, and our sales are only down a small amount, which is to be expected with a migration," says Wynn. "It's been successful for us. We've seen students taking to the new app and we've recorded really good numbers." When asked if mobile ordering was a main-line aspect of GSU dining operations, Wynn didn't hesitate. "Absolutely. Right now, 10-15% of the overall daily orders at our Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and our other popular locations are now mobile orders placed through Transact Mobile Ordering." Merchant relationsThe change to Transact Mobile Ordering also meant an adjustment for GSU's participating merchants. "There were some features that Transact brought with its offering that the dining location managers like a lot," says Wynn. "One example is they're now able to use sticker printers instead of the printers that we had with our previous mobile ordering solution, which helps a lot in our Starbucks to better manage orders." "Transact Mobile Ordering has been successful for us. We've seen students taking to the new app and we've recorded really good numbers." The mobile ordering operation at Georgia Southern is purely pickup, no delivery, and all participating merchants, both national brands and local concepts, are located exclusively on-campus. At full capacity, GSU is running six dining locations on Transact Mobile Ordering, including a Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, a local coffee shop, a local sandwich shop, and a campus convenience store that also sells sandwiches. The campus Chick-fil-A in particular, Wynn says, required some post-implementation troubleshooting. "One of the initial challenges that came up was with Chick-fil-A. They are very specific with how long their food can sit," Wynn explains. "They didn't want anyone to put in an order and have that order fulfilled and sitting there for 10 or 15 minutes before pick up." To address this challenge Georgia Southern and Transact worked collaboratively on a solution. "Initially the solution was a manual check in when the student arrived to the Chick-fil-A counter, but that ended up taking longer than standing in the normal line to order," says Wynn. "So we worked with Transact and were able to create a mobile check-in feature that users, as they get close, tells Chick-fil-A that the student is on their way and that then prompts the order fulfillment." Reporting through Transact Mobile OrderingA mobile ordering system is only as effective as it's backend reporting and reconciliation, and Georgia Southern's operation had a few needs that had to be met. "Transact Mobile Ordering is comparable to what we had before," says Wynn. "But one of the big differences is that before all the back-end service used to be done by our mobile ordering provider." Georgia Southern dining is self-op and has its own accounting department so at times, the two systems were tough to keep in sync. "Right now 10-15% of the overall daily orders at our Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and other popular locations are now mobile orders placed through Transact Mobile Ordering." A caveat to this was that any problems that a customer had with an order would be handled by the mobile ordering provider. "They would then make some type of restitution separate to our records," says Wynn. This caused challenges with reconciliation and he says that solving that issue was key to the migration. As Wynn explains: "If someone placed an order on a Monday and later requested a refund – and let's say that refund was issued on Tuesday but they run it against Monday's end-of-day – it changes the deposit that was done for the end of the month. We'd complete our reports and send them to the bursar's office, but those refunds would change the end-of-day reports. This meant that when we balanced our books at the end of the month, we had different numbers, which then meant we had to file discrepancy reports that created internal problems." Separate to all this, another wrinkle that was added to GSU's previous mobile ordering ecosystem was the implementation of Agilysys' Eatec inventory management system. "Any sales that happened through QuadPoint – the POS we use at all our retail locations – that data goes back into the inventory management system," explains Wynn. "But data from our previous mobile ordering provider did not sync with Eatec." ![]() Transact Mobile Orders placed at Georgia Southern between launch day July 1, 2019 and October 19, 2019. Simply put, the institution decided that Transact Mobile Ordering would play well with the existing QuadPoint ecosystem and integrate seamlessly with the new inventory management system. "Transact Mobile Ordering is just another register when you look at it from QuadPoint's perspective, and we already had a way to get that data into our inventory management system. So it solved that problem for us," explains Wynn. "And because nobody was going in and changing the deposits from the day before, that problem was also solved by moving to Transact." The move to Transact provided more control for dining managers and GSU admins. "All the payments we process, the reports, deposits, and end-of-days are all done through QuadPoint, so it was something we were already very used to and very comfortable with. It was a great benefit for us," says Wynn. Weighing the optionsDeciding on the right mobile ordering solution will be different for each campus. For the self-op environment at Georgia Southern, reporting and reconciliation complications, the implementation of a new inventory management system, and an approaching contract expiration were all key considerations in moving to Transact Mobile Ordering. And while the decision to move providers paid off, Wynn hasn't forgotten how far mobile ordering has come in just a few short years. "Credit to Tapingo because they really showed us and proved to us that mobile ordering was a thing that students absolutely wanted and were willing to use," says Wynn. "We saw the Tapingo orders go up and up every year. And if we still had that solution, that trend would probably continue." The case at Georgia Southern illustrates that it's a pros-and-cons decision. Some campuses will benefit more from a platform that handles all the aspects of the operation, while other institutions will want to keep hold of some of the control. There's no right or wrong answer, and ultimately it's something that you can only discover after getting your hands dirty. Where are the bodies? Missing remains mean no peace for grieving families in Ecuador - CNN Posted: 07 May 2020 11:52 PM PDT Two corpses laid unattended on the tile floor. By the next morning, the body count in the room rose to three. Flavio Ramos was dead. More than a month later, his family still hasn't buried Flavio Ramos. They couldn't if they tried. Because soon after his death, Arturo Ramos says hospital authorities lost the body. "We need a place to say, on Sunday let's go to put flowers on the tomb of my father," his heartbroken son said. "There is nothing, there is nothing you can do." Flavio Ramos, 55, is yet another Covid-19 victim in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the site of one of the world's worst coronavirus outbreaks. His death and disappearance illustrate how the healthcare system in Ecuador's second-largest city, roughly the size of Chicago, collapsed within a matter of weeks after the outbreak exploded in March. Bodies in hospitalsGuayaquil was woefully unprepared to confront the coronavirus. Last month, the port city of nearly three million gained global notoriety when videos surfaced showing dead bodies left in the city's streets after morgues and funeral homes were overwhelmed. Many families made the choice to put loved ones outdoors for fear of infection and because the smells were unbearable. Three doctors in Guayaquil, each working at different hospitals, described similar scenarios during the months of March and April to CNN: Hospitals completely overwhelmed by a pandemic that descended rapidly on an unprepared healthcare system, leaving no chance to truly help people, let alone provide patients with basic levels of care. All spoke to CNN anonymously for fear of losing their jobs. "People were terrified and scared," said one doctor about some of the worst days. "Really sick people were coming to the hospital, dying. You tended to one, did what you could do, then that person dies, and you move to the next, and that person dies, and on and on like that." "At one point there were dozens of bodies between the hospital rooms and morgue that were waiting to be taken away," said the doctor. "There were no body bags left." The rate of death far outpaced the capacity of city morgues and funeral homes. A second doctor told CNN that he usually saw three or four dead bodies lying on the floor each day at the hospital. "We had nowhere else to put them," he said. In a video obtained by CNN, a family is seen pulling the body of a loved one from their car and laying it in a hospital parking lot, unsure what to do next. No one would accept himIn January, Flavio Ramos celebrated his birthday, surrounded by family and friends. During the last week of March, he started feeling sick. On the 31st, his breathing became so labored that 24-year-old Arturo Ramos had to take action. He drove his father to the nearest hospital, expecting the gravely ill engineer to be quickly admitted and get the help he desperately needed. But when he arrived, hospital staff told him the facility was already full. "The doctors said, 'There are no beds for patients,' and that was it," Ramos told CNN by video call from his home in Guayaquil. "If you stayed at the door they said they would call security to kick you out." Undeterred, he tried again at another hospital, and another, and another. After four hours of driving, Ramos says his father was admitted at General Guasmo Sur Hospital. It was the 11th facility he'd tried. Ramos recalled that his father spent his last hours in a room with two patients who had already died. "Both bodies were on the floor," he said. "One was wrapped in a black bag, a garbage bag to be exact, and the other was just dead on the floor. No one was taking care of them." Ramos stepped out of the hospital around 9:30 am on April 1 to grab some breakfast. He says he was gone for about 15 minutes. When he returned, his father was dead. "No one was with him when he died," his son said. The hospital declined to comment on the case. "If you keep her here, she will die."Arturo Ramos told CNN the hospital was like a warzone. 38 year-old Ana Maria, who declined to give her last name, said the same thing about her experience. She said she brought her 67-year-old mother to a local clinic because she was experiencing Covid-19 symptoms. A quick x-ray later and the attending physician said Ana Maria needed to get her mother to a hospital immediately—she had severe pneumonia, the doctor said, likely due to Covid-19. By the time Ana Maria arrived at nearby Hospital Los Ceibos on March 26th looking for treatment, her mother's lips were turning shades of blue and she could barely walk. They waited inside for nearly 24 hours for a bed to open up. But as she watched patients in adjoining rooms and nearby hallways, and heard the anguished screams of their loved ones, she had second thoughts about keeping her mother in the hospital. She took decisive action after speaking to a nurse. "She said, 'If you have the money to treat your mother at home, do it,'" Ana Maria recalled. "'If you keep her here, she will die.'" She brought her mother home, hired a private nurse to treat her, and she survived. But the vast majority of people in Guayaquil don't have those financial means. Before Ana Maria left the hospital, the daughter of another patient spoke to her in their hospital room. "She cried and said to me, 'Your mom will survive because you have the money. We don't have the money.'" Top officials in President Lenín Moreno's cabinet have publicly apologized for the government's poor response to the pandemic, saying health officials were not ready for an outbreak with such a staggering death toll. According to government data, 533 people died of Covid-19 in Guayaquil in March and April, combined. However, during that same time period, the government recorded at least 12,350 total deaths in the city -- far more than the 2,695 and 2,903 that died in the same period of 2018 and 2019, respectively. In Guayaquil, the Covid-19 related death toll might well be over 9,000 deaths, according to three Ecuador-based epidemiologists who spoke to CNN. Dr. Esteban Ortiz-Prado, an epidemiologist at the University of the Americas in Quito, Ecuador's capital city, said there was no way to know exactly how many of the excess deaths were directly or indirectly related to Covid-19, but that the pandemic was the only reasonable way to explain this year's sudden spike in the total death count. "For me, those are Covid [deaths] until proven otherwise," he said. The government has admitted the actual death toll from the coronavirus is higher than the official count but said the true number will never be known due to its inability to test more people. "We cannot say the government is lying," said Marco Coral, an infectious disease researcher also at the University of the Americas. "But what we can say is that the government did not do enough tests on the people," an irreplaceable part of any attempt to identify the true number of coronavirus cases and deaths. Fortunately, the number of deaths in Guayaquil is dropping. Since the first week of April, when some of the highest daily death totals were recorded, the daily number of total deaths has fallen dramatically -- at least 69 total deaths were reported in the city on April 30, far below the peak seen earlier in the month. Social distancing measures, now slowly being eased off in the country, appear to have worked. But as the number of daily deaths goes down, attention turns to finding those who are already lost. Losing the right to say goodbyeAmid the chaos of mounting bodies, disorganization has led to the misplacement and misidentification of those who have passed away. Many families have been unable to say goodbye to their loved ones. When Arturo Ramos returned to the hospital the day after his father died, authorities said they couldn't find his remains. The only way he could try to locate him, officials said, was to go to the morgue and search through unidentified remains himself. "[Inside the morgue] there were bodies stacked one on top of each other," said Ramos. "Going into that room, it's like hell." He said the bodies in the room were separated by those who had already been identified and those that hadn't. He went through body after body over the course of an hour looking for his father, accompanied by a hospital employee who, after they failed to find his dad, told him to come back the next day. For the next four straight days, Ramos estimates he looked at roughly 250 corpses, both inside the morgue and in shipping containers that had been set up outside to handle the overflow. Video of the containers on the grounds of General Guasmo Sur Hospital was given to CNN by the person who shot it. Bodies are seen in one container piled at least three high, decomposing inside different types of body bags. Ramos said only part of the morgue and one of the shipping containers was refrigerated. "I wasn't lucky," said Ramos. "I never found him." The problem of missing remains is so widespread that the attorney general launched an investigation last month into the mismanagement of remains at hospital morgues. CNN asked the government for exact figures on how many remains are missing, but as of publication, had not heard back. A website has been set up where anyone can search for a missing loved one's name. If the government has news to share on the location of a body, it will show up in a pop-up window on the screen. More than a month after Flavio Ramos' death, a search for his name launches a pop-up window that reads only: 'No Results Found.' Ramos grieves for his father alone these days. He's separated from his family for their own safety. Last week, he tested positive for the virus. CNN Español's Ana Maria Cañizares in Quito, Ecuador contributed to this report. Posted: 07 May 2020 11:11 PM PDT Past as a factory worker helps Malaysian actor Christopher Lee prepare for role in HBO Asia's 'Workers' (VIDEO) - Malay Mail ![]() KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — Before Malaysian actor Christopher Lee found fame in Singapore and East Asia, the 48-year-old emerged from humble beginnings, taking on manual labour and odd jobs. For his latest role as an ironworker in HBO Asia's latest original series Workers, the experience of being a factory worker helped him prepare for the role of Ming Qi. "I like this role because it reminded me a lot of my younger days — I was a factory worker for about six years before entering the entertainment industry," Lee said during a video interview with journalists to promote the series. "I was familiar with things like public holidays, allowance and working overtime." He often took on night shifts which would explain his preference for nighttime. Raised in a small kampung in Melaka, Lee's family wasn't well to do and many in the village, including himself, entered the workforce at a young age. Proud of his working-class upbringing, the actor described his parents, childhood friends, their parents and the people around him as down-to-earth and happy-go-lucky. This sense of familiarity was captured in Workers, instantly attracting Lee. "I've worked in a warehouse, I've sold meat and I was also a waiter. "These different experiences helped me to relate well with my character," said Lee who is based in Singapore. ![]() In 1995, the tide turned for the actor when he won first runner-up in the Singaporean talent search programme Star Search. "The reason I took part in Star Search was also simply because of the cash prize. "And that was how I got into the entertainment industry, by accident," he said. He went on to star in multiple TV series collecting accolades along the way including a Golden Bell award for Best Leading Actor in 2013. "I was a worker myself, so back when I was young, the things I wanted are no different to what the workers in the show want, such as winning the lottery, striking it rich and earning more from working overtime," he said. Workers follows the lives of workers in a construction site in Taiwan who daydream about being rich. They resort to countless outrageous get-rich-quick schemes only to make fools out of themselves. Lee hopes audiences have a better understanding of the working-class through the series' positive and light-hearted tone. "In fact, this series can be a representation of the working class, something workers from different regions can relate to. "When I took up this role, I felt that I had a mission to help represent all workers in every aspect, including their emotions, lifestyle and dreams," Lee said. ![]() In South-east Asia where construction sites are a common sight, it appears Lee's mission would be more relevant now than ever amid the coronavirus pandemic where employment precariousness is on the rise across the globe. For Lee, life under circuit breaker means he gets to spend more time with his wife, Singaporean actress Fann Wong, and their five-year-old son Zed. "My son is very happy because it's rare for my wife and I to be at home with him every single day, to spend every minute and every second with him. "He never asks to go out and he understands that we can't go out during this period of time," Lee said, adding that social distancing is crucial to prevent the spread of the virus. The Fall in Love at First Kiss actor has also been cooking up a storm in his kitchen. "I have been cooking more than usual, at least one dish a day," he said. Though the family of three aren't able to enjoy outdoor activities as much as before, they still have a lot of fun at home. "My wife told me that I shouldn't be going out from now on so that I can cook more for the family," Lee said with a laugh. Workers premieres on HBO GO on May 10 at 9pm with two back-to-back episodes followed by one new episode at the same time weekly. 2020-05-08 02:46:02Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMihAFodHRwczovL3d3dy5tYWxheW1haWwuY29tL25ld3Mvc2hvd2Jpei8yMDIwLzA1LzA4L3Bhc3QtYXMtYS1mYWN0b3J5LXdvcmtlci1oZWxwcy1tYWxheXNpYW4tYWN0b3ItY2hyaXN0b3BoZXItbGVlLXByZXBhcmUtZm9yLzE4NjQyMDnSAYgBaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWFsYXltYWlsLmNvbS9hbXAvbmV3cy9zaG93Yml6LzIwMjAvMDUvMDgvcGFzdC1hcy1hLWZhY3Rvcnktd29ya2VyLWhlbHBzLW1hbGF5c2lhbi1hY3Rvci1jaHJpc3RvcGhlci1sZWUtcHJlcGFyZS1mb3IvMTg2NDIwOQ?oc=5 |

Posted: 07 May 2020 09:22 PM PDT ![]() Here's a video that Justin Bieber knew would get attention: Carole Baskin, in a cat outfit, dancing with her cat and husband to Bieber's song with Ariana Grande. That's a clip that Bieber tweeted out Thursday night, hours ahead of the premiere of his and Grande's music video for their duet "Stuck With U." In the 13-second clip, controversial "Tiger King" personality Baskin, the meme-ified Big Cat Rescue spokeswoman and rival of former zoo owner Joe Exotic, is seen swaying with her second husband, Howard Baskin. The video, which was retweeted by the Big Cat Rescue Twitter account, appears to be one of the many fan-shot videos made in response to Bieber and Grande's ask for fan videos to be included in their crowd-sourced music video. However, the clip is not a part of Grande and Bieber's official music video. Grande made it known on Twitter that she "did not allow or approve" the "Tiger King" couple's inclusion in the final video, but "nonetheless," she said, the video of the Baskins "exists and that's ..... unique." The debut of Bieber and Grande's "Stuck With U" is set to premiere midnight on Thursday. Proceeds from the streams and sales of the song will be donated to First Responders Children's Foundation. Grande wrote on Instagram that this collaboration with Bieber "really means so much more than it ever could have if it had happened any other way or if it had been any other song ... my heart is seriously so full." Father and Son Arrested for Murder of Ahmaud Arbery - TMZ Posted: 07 May 2020 08:52 PM PDT Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael -- the white father and son seen on video confronting Ahmaud Arbery and then shooting him -- have been arrested for murder. ![]() The Georgia Bureau of Investigations arrested the McMichaels Thursday ... both have been booked into Glynn County Jail for murder and aggravated assault. ![]() Both men had been free since the February 23 incident, but when the video leaked this week there was mounting pressure for them to be arrested. The GBI officially took over the case Thursday from local cops in Brunswick, GA. The haunting video showed Ahmaud jogging down the street when he was stopped and confronted by the McMichaels. A brief struggle between Travis and Ahmaud took place before gunfire ... and Ahmaud fell to the ground. A 911 call from that day was also released Thursday. In the call, you can hear who appears to be Gregory McMichael talking to a dispatcher, saying, "He's running right now. There he goes right now." There were allegations of corruption because the elder McMichael used to be an investigator for the Glynn County D.A.'s Office. After the video came out, the D.A. formally asked the GBI to investigate the now 2-and-a-half-month-old case. Coronavirus found in men's semen - CNN Posted: 07 May 2020 08:52 PM PDT A team at Shangqiu Municipal Hospital tested 38 male patients treated there at the height of the pandemic in China, in January and February. About 16% of them had evidence of the coronavirus in their semen, the team reported in the journal JAMA Network Open. About a quarter of them were in the acute stage of infection and nearly 9% of them were recovering, the team reported. "We found that SARS-CoV-2 can be present in the semen of patients with COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 may still be detected in the semen of recovering patients," Diangeng Li of Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing and colleagues wrote. "Even if the virus cannot replicate in the male reproductive system, it may persist, possibly resulting from the privileged immunity of testes," the team added. Privileged immunity means the immune system cannot fully reach the region to attack viral invaders. It's not a surprising finding. Many viruses can live in the male reproductive tract. Ebola and Zika virus were both found to spread in semen, sometimes months after a male patient had recovered. It's not yet clear if coronavirus can spread this way. Finding evidence of virus does not necessarily mean it's infectious. "If it could be proved that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted sexually in future studies, sexual transmission might be a critical part of the prevention of transmission," the team wrote. "Abstinence or condom use might be considered as preventive means for these patients. In addition, it is worth noting that there is a need for studies monitoring fetal development. Therefore, to avoid contact with the patient's saliva and blood may not be enough, since the survival of SARS-CoV-2 in a recovering patient's semen maintains the likelihood to infect others." Facebook, YouTube and other social networks are struggling to remove a viral video that includes various conspiracy theories about the coronavirus pandemic, highlighting the challenges that come with moderating content online. The nearly 26-minute video is part of a series of clips being released ahead of a documentary called Plandemic that the filmmakers say "will expose the scientific and political elite who run the scam that is our global health system." The video features Judy Mikovits, a controversial former medical researcher who repeats conspiracy theories about the coronavirus pandemic, including the idea wearing a mask could make you sick because it could expose you to your own "reactivated coronavirus expressions." Mikovits' comments conflict with advice from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which says everyone should wear a face cover to protect others in case you're infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. "Suggesting that wearing a mask can make you sick could lead to imminent harm, so we're removing the video," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. Mikovits, a vocal critic of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading expert on infectious diseases, also suggested the virus had been engineered, saying it wasn't a "natural occurrence." Scientists widely believe the virus jumped from animals to human beings, and the US Intelligence Community took the unusual step of publicly saying it believed the virus wasn't "manmade or genetically modified." The video includes allegations that coronavirus deaths are higher than they should be because doctors are being incentivized to say their patients died from the virus to get money from a national health insurance program. There is no evidence that case numbers are being inflated. Google-owned YouTube was removing videos for violating its rules though it could still be found on the platform late Thursday afternoon. A YouTube spokesman said the company will remove videos that include "medically unsubstantiated diagnostic advice for COVID-19." Plandemic videos racked up a combined 4.7 million views on YouTube on Monday and Tuesday, according to BuzzSumo, a social media tool. Twitter said it was blocking the hashtags #PlagueOfCorruption and #Plandemicmovie from its search and trends. Mikovits tweeted a video in which she urged President Donald Trump to end the lockdown and stop requiring people to wear masks, calling the face coverings "dangerous." Twitter said the tweet didn't violate its rules against harmful coronavirus misinformation but said the link to her video was marked as unsafe, limiting its spread. The company also marked a link to the documentary's website as unsafe. Still, the Plandemic video could be found on Twitter late Thursday afternoon. Despite these efforts, Plandemic videos continue to pop up, including on Facebook. Some Facebook users were sharing the video in public groups, but linking to other sites that aren't as well known as YouTube or to the documentary's website. Keeping the video off social media has proven to be a game of content moderation whack-a-mole for tech firms. Social networks have been trying to combat misinformation by directing users to more trustworthy sources including the CDC and the World Health Organization. Mikki Willis, the filmmaker behind Plandemic, said in an email that he doesn't plan to appeal the takedowns of the videos, but added that he was "working on a strategy to bypass the gatekeepers." Former Georgia Police Officer And His Son Arrested In The Death Of Ahmaud Arbery - NPR Posted: 07 May 2020 08:22 PM PDT ![]() A cross with flowers and a letter A sits at the entrance to the Satilla Shores neighborhood where Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed. Sean Rayford/Getty Images hide caption The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday that it has arrested two white men in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old unarmed black man who was shot and killed in February while jogging on a residential street in Brunswick, Ga. Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael are charged with murder and aggravated assault, according to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation press release. Gregory McMichael, 64 is a former investigator with the Brunswick district attorney's office and the father of Travis McMichael, 34. The father and son have been taken into Glynn County Jail, according to that release. In recent days graphic videos have circulated online that show the McMichaels confronting Arbery. The arrest comes after calls for action mounted; on Wednesday residents gathered at the local sheriff's office in protest and the District Attorney's office requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigate Arbery's killing. Ahmaud Arbery was killed doing what he loved, and a south Georgia community demands justice - CNN Posted: 07 May 2020 07:52 PM PDT It's been more than 10 weeks since the shooting, and Arbery's supporters feel their outrage would've been louder had coronavirus restrictions not curtailed their protests. On Tuesday, days after the state eased its stay-at-home order, demonstrators converged on the Satilla Shores neighborhood where Arbery was killed. "You want to chase somebody down? We got over 100 bodies out here. Chase us down," said a man leading the demonstration. "We're a community. We're not going to keep allowing this to go on in Glynn County." They demanded to know what the 25-year-old did to deserve being pursued by armed civilians and killed on a Sunday afternoon. One of the armed men was Greg McMichael. He used to work for the Glynn County Police Department, which has not made an arrest in the case. He also worked for one of the two district attorneys' offices that have recused themselves. McMichael, 64, told police that his son, Travis, 34, shot Arbery, whom they suspected in a string of burglaries, after Arbery attacked him as he stood in the road with a shotgun, according to a police report Arbery family attorney S. Lee Merritt counters that the McMichaels, who are white, saw a black man jogging through their neighborhood, assumed the worst, and tracked him down and killed him. They should be arrested immediately, Merritt said. 'I just need to know what he was doing wrong'Arbery had gone for a run, as he was known to do. The former high school football speedster often jogged through the neighborhoods southwest of Brunswick, those who knew him say. Yet on February 23, he was viewed as a threat, a thief. Someone in Satilla Shores called 911 to say "a black male running down the street" -- Arbery -- might be responsible for a rash of burglaries. "There's been break-ins out here. There's a guy in a house right now. It's a house under construction," said the caller, whose name is censored on the 911 tape. "That's fine. I'll get them out there," the operator says. "I just need to know what he was doing wrong. Was he just on the premises and not supposed to be?" The caller replies, "He's been caught on the camera a bunch before at night. It's kind of an ongoing thing out here." Within minutes, three blasts erupted from Travis McMichael's shotgun, and Arbery was dead in the street. "They didn't give any answer for (the 911 operator's question)," Merritt said earlier this week. "They said, 'He's a black man running down our road.'" Greg McMichael's former employer declined to press charges, but Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tom Durden -- the third prosecutor in the case -- said Tuesday he'd submit the evidence to a grand jury once the state's coronavirus restrictions were lifted. Durden's decision came after a radio station posted (and deleted) a video that appears to show the confrontation between Travis McMichael and Arbery. The alleged rash of burglariesGreg McMichael told Glynn County police that Arbery was suspected in "several break-ins," but no such string of crimes was reported in the weeks before the shooting. Police have yet to clarify whether Arbery is accused of any crime at a home that was being built. The owner of the under-construction home, who is listed as a victim in the police incident report, said his surveillance system captured at least four short clips of a man who appeared to be Arbery "coming onto his property" February 23. He declined to share them with CNN and spoke on the condition of anonymity because he says he's been receiving death threats. The man walked by the garage and down to a dock on the Little Satilla River, the motion-triggered cameras show, according to the homeowner. Asked whether they showed the man stealing or committing any other crime, he said they show him "trespassing." "I feel for the family, and this is a very bad situation," he said, before abruptly ending the Tuesday call after what sounded like a burst of gunshots that coincided with a CNN crew's arrival to the neighborhood. Prior to Arbery's shooting, the man said in a second interview Wednesday, the cameras on three or four occasions captured someone walking on the property at night -- one time stealing $2,500 of fishing tackle from a boat in his garage -- but he could not identify the perpetrator. He did not file a police report, he said, but called the incident "unnerving and unsettling." In the more than seven weeks preceding the shooting, there was only one burglary report in the neighborhood, said Glynn County police Lt. Cheri Bashlor. A 9 mm pistol was stolen January 1 from an unlocked truck outside the McMichaels' home, she said. CNN's attempts to reach Travis McMichael were unsuccessful. Greg McMichael declined to comment because he's under investigation. GBI and grand jury will weigh inQuestions about the alleged break-ins and other elements of the case propelled protesters into Satilla Shores on Tuesday evening. They chanted, "I run with Maud!" -- one the young man's nicknames -- and demanded justice, according to footage from CNN Jacksonville affiliate WJAX. Glynn County Sheriff E. Neal Jump, whose office has said it was not involved in the investigation, commiserated with the protesters, the footage shows. "Am I upset that it has taken this long for the justice part to come? As the sheriff, I'm upset. It shouldn't have taken that long. If that was my son, I'd be upset," Jump said. The demonstrations came hours after Durden, who took over the case around April 13, said he'd empanel a grand jury sometime after June 12, when the state Supreme Court's Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. "I am of the opinion that the case should be presented to the grand jury of Glynn County for consideration of criminal charges against those involved in the death of Mr. Arbery," Durden's statement said. Durden's office did not reply to multiple CNN requests for comment. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation did not initially open a probe because the Glynn County Police Department didn't request the bureau's help, though it did request assistance investigating threats against the GCPD and the release of Tuesday's video, according to the bureau. Hours later, the GBI said Durden had formally requested an investigation into Arbery's killing. Video captures grisly confrontationShortly before Durden's and the GBI's announcements, a local radio personality released video that appears to show Arbery's killing. The captured events match numerous accounts of the shooting -- including, in many respects -- that of Merritt, Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill and, as chronicled in the police report, Greg McMichael. CNN has not verified who recorded the video. The 36-second clip shows the end of the chase and the shooting. It has sound, but only the shotgun blasts are clearly audible. Arbery's and the McMichaels' words, if any were exchanged, cannot be heard. It is not clear what happened before the video begins or after it ends. Taken from inside a vehicle behind Arbery, it begins with Arbery jogging down the middle of the street toward a truck. Greg McMichael is in the back of the truck and his son, Travis, is standing near the hood, according to the Glynn County police report, which does not mention the video. As Arbery approaches the truck, he veers into someone's yard to go around the truck blocking his path. As he passes the truck, he makes a sharp left and tussles with Travis McMichael over the shotgun. A shot goes off, and the two disappear off the left side of the screen as Arbery appears to throw a punch. Greg McMichael, still standing in the truck bed, produces a handgun but doesn't fire. A second shot is heard off-screen. As they come back into view, both clutching the shotgun, a third shot goes off just as Arbery lands a punch to Travis McMichael's head. Arbery recoils. Blood appears on his white T-shirt, below his left ribcage. He stumbles and drops face-first to the street. Travis McMichael walks away, shotgun in hand, as his father runs toward Arbery with his handgun. The first shot went through Arbery's right palm, consistent with Arbery grabbing the gun barrel, Barnhill wrote. The second shot is consistent with Travis McMichael "attempting to push the gun away from Arbery while Arbery was pulling it toward himself. The third shot, too, appears to be in a struggle over the gun," the prosecutor wrote. Greg McMichael had blood on his hands when police arrived, observed a Glynn County police officer, who concluded in his report that the blood came from Greg McMichael turning Arbery's body over to check for weapons. The report does not say any were found. It was self-defense, recused prosecutor saysBarnhill, the second prosecutor to step down in the case, said he did so only at Arbery's mother's behest. She claimed he had a conflict of interests, he wrote. The district attorney's son is a prosecutorial investigator with the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, from which Greg McMichael retired after serving with the Glynn County Police Department. (The Brunswick circuit's district attorney was the first to recuse herself.) Though Barnhill saw no conflict, he wrote, he agreed to step down. In doing so, he wrote an April 2 letter saying the McMichaels and William Bryan, a third man involved who is listed as a witness in the police report, engaged in "hot pursuit" and had "solid first-hand probable cause," as civilians, to detain Arbery. "It appears their intent was to stop and hold this criminal suspect until law enforcement arrived. Under Georgia law, this is perfectly legal," Barnhill wrote, citing state code that says civilians can arrest someone if they have immediate knowledge of an offense or if a perpetrator is trying to flee after committing a felony. Barnhill also questioned whether Arbery might've been responsible for the gunshots by pulling on the shotgun, and he concluded Travis McMichael "was allowed to use deadly force to protect himself," he wrote in the letter to Glynn County police Capt. Tom Jump. "Arbery's mental health records and prior convictions help explain his apparent aggressive nature and his possible thought pattern to attack an armed man," Barnhill wrote, without elaborating. Arbery's dad, Marcus Arbery, denied his son had mental health issues, telling CNN, "Ain't nothing wrong with him." The Brunswick News has reported Arbery was indicted for allegedly bringing a gun to a 2013 high school basketball game, when Arbery was 19, and the family attorney has acknowledged Arbery's 2018 arrest on shoplifting charges. "The reference to ... alleged conduct from high school or shoplifting is absurd and has nothing to do with his murder," Merritt said. "The decision to rely on the citizen's arrest statute is really a recent invention. Prior to that, they just simply said it was self-defense," the Arbery family attorney added. "Ahmaud stopped by a house that was under construction and he looked through the window. We don't know if that happened or not, but even if that did happen, that is not a felony that would invoke the citizen's arrest statute." 'He was not armed,' mom saysIn the first 911 tape, the caller says, "I'm out here at Satilla Shores. There's a black male running down the street," then says, "Stop" and addresses "Travis" before the call ends after a few minutes of silence. The aforementioned details about the break-ins came in the second 911 call, wherein the operator asked what Arbery had done wrong. Greg McMichael told police he saw Arbery "hauling ass" down the street, according to the report police provided to CNN, which lists five other witnesses but provides only Greg McMichael's account. He grabbed his .357 Magnum and Travis grabbed his shotgun because they didn't know if Arbery had a weapon, Greg McMichael told police. When they'd seen him "the other night," he told an investigator, Arbery reached into his pants as if he were armed, according to the incident report. The father and son jumped in a pickup and tried to head Arbery off, but Arbery ran in the other direction, at which point "Roddy" -- who appears to be William Bryan, according to Barnhill's account -- tried unsuccessfully to block Arbery's path, the report says. The McMichaels told Arbery, "Stop, stop. We want to talk to you," according to the report, and "pulled up beside the male and shouted stop again at which time Travis exited the truck with a shotgun." Arbery "began to violently attack" Travis McMichael, his father told police. As they struggled, shots were fired and Arbery "fell face down on the pavement with his hand under his body," the report says. CNN's attempts to reach Bryan were unsuccessful. When Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper, was first contacted by police, she was told her son was involved in a burglary and there was a confrontation with the homeowner, during which Arbery was fatally shot, she said. "He was not armed," she told CNN. Birthday would've been FridayCooper is one of many who say there was nothing suspicious about Arbery going for a run. "I wouldn't have ever worried with him jogging because if he's jogging he's not bothering anyone," his mother said. "I never worried about him jogging, ever." "Amazing football player, amazing speed," said Brunswick High School football coach and history teacher Jason Vaughn. Arbery, who would've celebrated his 26th birthday Friday, was so fast coaches would tell him to slow down in practice, Vaughn said. He was a leader on the team, the coach said. "He's one of those students you don't forget because his smile was so infectious. His smile made you smile," he said. Vaughn recalled his outside linebacker's fun personality and how he would tease him, standing beside him and telling passing students, "'Y'all get to class. Y'all move along. C'mon, c'mon, c'mon. I'm Coach Vaughn today.' ... He just had that kindness about him. He would sense when you're not feeling good and he would just come and love on you." Arbery's lifelong friend and former teammate, Demetris Frazier, called his pal goofy, humble and inspiring. He always made time for kids, whether it was a football camp or a game of hoops, he said. "He's touched so many people here, and I think that's why the community is so in a scare right now," he said. The person described in the Glynn County police report and Barnhill's letter doesn't square with the Arbery that Vaughn and Frazier knew, the men said. They want justice, and they're joined in their desire by a nationwide chorus that includes the ACLU, NAACP, the Southern Poverty Law Center, presidential candidate Joe Biden, LeBron James, and hip-hop stars LL Cool J and Questlove of The Roots. Gov. Brian Kemp has tweeted, "Georgians deserve answers." Frazier doesn't know what the McMichaels had planned when they armed themselves and hopped in their truck to give chase, but that no longer matters, he said. "Just because that young man was running past your house jogging doesn't mean he has committed a crime," he said. "I don't know their intentions when they did it, but I know the result -- and I know that it was wrong and I know that justice needs to be served," he said. (NIAID-RML/Zuma Press/TNS) Photo: Niaid-rml, TNSSocial media companies including YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook are removing a viral conspiracy theory video because of its claims regarding the coronavirus pandemic. The roughly 26-minute video was presented as an extremely long "trailer" for a full-length film titled "Plandemic," and features an extended interview with Judy Mikovits, a well-known figure in the anti-vaccine movement, who has made various discredited claims about the effects of vaccines. A YouTube spokesperson said the company removes "content that includes medically unsubstantiated diagnostic advice for covid-19," which includes the "Plandemic" video.A rep for Facebook said, "Suggesting that wearing a mask can make you sick could lead to imminent harm, so we're removing the video." A Vimeo spokesperson said the company "stands firm in keeping our platform safe from content that spreads harmful and misleading health information. The video in question has been removed by our Trust & Safety team for violating these very policies." Twitter responded to The Post by stating that a tweet from Mikovits sharing a different video interview of hers does not violate its covid-19 policy, but that the company has removed the hashtags #PlagueofCorruption and #PlandemicMovie from its searches and trends sections. The video makes the false claim that billionaires aided the spread of coronavirus to further the spread of vaccines. It also attacks the credibility of Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, by using out-of-context footage of him speaking at White House press briefings. Finally, it makes the baseless and dangerous claim that wearings masks is harmful. By the time it was removed from Facebook, it had racked up "1.8 million views, including 17,000 comments and nearly 150,000 shares," Digital Trends reported. Conspiracy theories have flourished during the global pandemic, partially due to the basic human discomfort with uncertainty, according to various experts interviewed by The Post. Many times, "These are recycled from earlier conspiracy theories," noted Mike Wood, a psychologist and expert on belief in conspiracy theories who studied the spread of misinformation during the Zika outbreak in 2016. "In a pandemic, there's immediately going to be conspiracy theories that the virus is either harmless, a bioweapon that's going to kill everybody or an excuse for the government to give a vaccine that is going to kill everybody." Social media companies have struggled to fight misinformation, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. "Facebook said it has labeled the inaccuracies and lowered their rank in users' daily feeds," wrote The Washington Post's Tony Romm, adding that Twitter has "started steering U.S. users searching for coronavirus-related hashtags to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." And as MIT Technology Review's Abby Ohlheiser wrote, "As covid-19 took hold, YouTube introduced specific policies prohibiting videos that question the transmission or existence of the disease, promote unsubstantiated cures, or encourage people to ignore official guidance." How the coronavirus pandemic has affected mobile app installs - ZDNet Posted: 07 May 2020 07:14 PM PDT As we hunker down to await the end of COVID-19 lockdown, our behavior has changed, with mobile app installs increasing due to the change in our behavior, according to a new report. San Francisco-based SaaS company Adjust has published its Global App Trends 2020 report. The report shows how the coronavirus has affected the app industry worldwide and looks at longer-term trends. The report highlights differences between paid and organic installs and notes that, as the market becomes increasingly competitive, app marketing is turning into a pay-to-play game. Installs from paid sources amounted to 30% of total installs in 2019, up from 24% in 2018. Many industries are noticing increases in online sessions and installs during the first quarter of 2020. Gaming has seen a large uptick in installs, as those staying at home seek online entertainment. ![]() During the last week of March, there was a 132% increase in the number of installs compared to last year. Gaming apps saw a 47% increase in sessions and 75% increase in installs in Q1 2020 compared to Q1 2019. Gaming apps do not see significant changes in use throughout the day. Casual game activity increases between 12pm and 4pm by 15%. However, mid-core games usage rose from very early in the morning (5am) to peak at 1pm. As the majority of employees now work remotely, business apps have seen a huge rise in sessions (up 105% compared to Q1 2019), and installs are up by 70%. Revenue events are also up by 75%, as users opt to install premium versions of the software. As many restaurants are forced to offer takeout food and drink only, food and drink apps also saw a significant increase in sessions which were up 73% compared to the same period last year, and app installs increased by 21%. Similarly, food and drink apps see a spike in use between 5pm and 8pm, accounting for 31% of total daily sessions. E-commerce has taken a turn downward as shelter-in-place and social distancing gathered force in late March. Installs have been trending below the established baseline for 2020, down 12% week-on-week. E-commerce apps experience a peak of sessions both at lunchtime, between noon and 2pm, and again between 7pm and 10pm, which accounts for a quarter of their daily total. Paul H. Müller, co-founder and CTO of Adjust, said: " the report shows little evidence to suggest that there's been a fundamental shift in user behavior post-install. Users are still taking the same actions in-app, averaging a little above two sessions a day." Competition for your attention is strong, as Disney+, NBCUniversal's Peacock, and WarnerMedia's HBO Max offer streaming to compete with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and many other OTT platforms. This increase in video streaming shows that audiences are moving increasingly to mobile platforms. Providers need to shift their attention to these platforms to stop platforms like Facebook Live, Mixer, Twitch, and YouTube Live, from stealing their revenue in this rapidly growing area. Two men involved in fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery face murder charges, GBI says - CNN Posted: 07 May 2020 06:52 PM PDT Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, were taken into custody and will be booked into the Glynn County Jail, the GBI said Thursday evening. The GBI said in a tweet it would hold a news conference Friday at 9 a.m. ET to discuss the case. It did not say when the McMichaels would appear in court. The arrests come two days after a 36-second video that appears to show the deadly confrontation surfaced online. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Arbery's father, said it was outrageous that it took more than two months for the father and son to be arrested. "It's a travesty of justice that they enjoyed their freedom for 74 days after taking the life of a young black man who was simply jogging. Yet, tomorrow, on Ahmaud's birthday, his parents are denied the simple joy of celebrating with their son," he said. Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when Gregory McMichael, a former police officer, and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael, 64, later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person whom they suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area. After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and Travis McMichael, 34, struggled over his son's shotgun. The elder McMichael told police that his son shot Arbery after the latter attacked him, according to the police report. In the video, three shots can be heard before Arbery is seen stumbling and falling to the ground. Arbery family attorney S. Lee Merritt says that the McMichaels, who are white, saw a black man jogging through their neighborhood, assumed the worst and tracked him down and killed him. CNN's attempts to reach Travis McMichael this week have been unsuccessful. Greg McMichael has declined to comment because he's under investigation. Two district attorneys had recused themselves from the case, though one said he thought the McMichaels had used their citizens' arrest rights. A third DA, Tom Durden of the Atlantic Judicial Circuit, said this week he would present the evidence to a grand jury, once the coronavirus pandemic restrictions against them were lifted. The GBI got the case Tuesday night when Durden requested the agency take over. On Tuesday, demonstrators converged on the Satilla Shores neighborhood where Arbery was killed. "You want to chase somebody down? We got over 100 bodies out here. Chase us down," said a man leading the demonstration. "We're a community. We're not going to keep allowing this to go on in Glynn County." This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
