Owen Gallatin, a 17-year-old Minnesota Duluth verbal commitment, was the top overall pick Tuesday in the USHL’s Phase II entry draft by the Madison Capitols, while Zam Plante of Hermantown was the 12th overall pick in the Phase I futures draft on Monday, going to the Chicago Steel.

A forward for the Hermantown Bantam AA and Minnesota Blades 15U squads this year, Zam Plante is the 15-year-old son of UMD Hall of Famer and 1993 Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist Derek Plante, who went on to win a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars.

Gallatin, a defenseman who turns 18 in June, spent the previous two seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Michigan. Having joined the USNTDP as a high school sophomore, the native of Hugo, Minnesota will be entering his senior year of high school in the fall. He tallied two goals and 10 assists playing in all 47 games for the U.S. Under-18 squad in 2019-20.

Also going in Phase II on Tuesday in the fifth round to the Muskegon Lumberjacks was Grand Rapids junior defenseman Easton Young. Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin senior defenseman Christian Miller — a St. Cloud State recruit — went in the seventh round to Madison as the 99th overall pick.

Zam Plante was the lone player with local ties to be selected during Phase I.
