NORTON SHORES, MI – City officials are looking to create a visual entry point for Norton Shores with the reconstruction of Seminole Road, part of the city’s ongoing redevelopment plans for the city’s north side.

The two-year project will reconstruct the roadway from Henry Street to Seaway Drive, which city officials say is currently in “rough shape,” as well as improve street lighting and add sidewalks and curbing along the street to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

“It’s going to be a variety of improvements to basically replace the roadway to make it more attractive and user-friendly,” said Norton Shores Public Works Director Jerry Bartoszek. “The road is in pretty rough shape at this point."

The project will be broken into two parts, with Phase 1 – reconstruction from Henry Street to Park Street – taking place during the summer of 2021, and Phase 2 – from Park Street to Seaway Drive – taking place the summer of 2022.

“The plan is to make the area more conducive to the community, make it more or less an entrance to Norton Shores, since we don’t have much of a downtown,” Bartoszek said.

City officials have not yet decided if signage will be added to the area to create a visual entry point for the city, Bartoszek said.

The project is still in the initial engineering and planning stages, with no estimated costs yet, Bartoszek said. A contractor has not yet been selected for the project, which will be funded by the State Transportation Improvement Program and Regional Water Funds, city documents show.

ENG Inc., a Lansing-based engineering firm with an office in Grand Haven, was hired as a consultant for the project, city documents show.

The road’s reconstruction is part of ongoing restoration plans for the city’s north side. City officials have been active in the area’s redevelopment since the adoption of a “Seminole PlacePlan” in 2017, which encourages mixed-use buildings, increased walk-ability and creation of public spaces around Seminole Road.

As part of that plan, a former Kmart store on the corner of Seminole Road and Henry Street that sat empty for 15 years was demolished and will be turned into a 126-unit apartment complex and a medical office building.

The apartment complex will include five residential buildings with 24 to 30 one- and two-bedroom apartments, a community center, pool, dog park, green space and 238 parking spots.

A two-story, 40,900-square-foot Mercy Health facility currently under construction on Henry near Seminole will include an urgent care, physical therapy, a lab, pharmacy with a drive-thru and doctors’ offices. The plan includes 292 parking spaces, landscaping and sidewalks.
