Mbappe can follow in Ronaldo's footsteps at Real Madrid - Cannavaro - Goal

Posted: 12 May 2020 12:18 AM PDT

Fabio Cannavaro believes Real Madrid need Kylian Mbappe so that he can follow in Cristiano Ronaldo's footsteps, but feels it will be tough to sign the Paris Saint-Germain star.

Mbappe, 21, continues to be linked with a move to Madrid from PSG, where he has starred during the past three seasons.

Madrid have found it hard to replace Ronaldo, who decided to leave the Liga giants to join Juventus in 2018.

Cannavaro, who won two La Liga titles with Los Blancos as a player, said Mbappe could be the player the club need to follow what Ronaldo delivered.

"Real Madrid need players like Mbappe, a young star who could follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo," the Guangzhou Evergrande coach told AS.

"It's normal that Madrid want to sign him but it also has to be taken into account that PSG's owners don't need the money. They are ambitious and they want to win the Champions League.

"I think it will be difficult for Madrid to get him. The president of PSG is a person who wants to win, I know them well and they will fight tooth and nail to keep Mbappe."

Former Arsenal coach Unai Emery also thinks Mbappe should swap Parc des Princes for the Bernabeu.

The Spaniard believes the World Cup winner has the talent to create a spectacular period at Madrid, if he decided to make the move.

"Of course he has the ability to mark an era in Madrid," former Arsenal coach Emery told AS.

"Which league would I advise him to play in? When I was in France, I loved watching him play and I was happy to be able to see it first hand.

"When I went to England, I would have liked him to have seen him play in the Premier League. And if I return to Spain, I hope he comes to La Liga.

"I'm sure there will be some things about being at PSG that will give him what he needs and maybe other things that won't. And perhaps Real Madrid might be able to offer him some of the things that he is lacking at PSG.

Article continues below

"We are lucky to have two of the best teams in the world - Real Madrid and Barcelona, and I personally would like them to continue having the best players in the world."

Mbappe has won three Ligue 1 titles, a Coupe de France and a Coupe de la Ligue with PSG.

He scored 30 goals in 33 games in all competitions this season, with the Ligue 1 campaign cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

'The Voice' Season 18: Thunderstorm Artis honors his wife while Megan Danielle dedicates song to her siblings - MEAWW

'The Voice' Season 18: Thunderstorm Artis honors his wife while Megan Danielle dedicates song to her siblings - MEAWW

Thunderstorm Artis from Team Nick Jonas dedicated his Top 9 performance to his wife, Faith Artis. He had chosen to perform on the song 'Let Me Go Home' by Michael Bublé.

Since this was fan week, a very young Kate from New York City who happens to be a big fan of Thunderstorm introduced his performance on tonight's episode. The 24-year-old artist brought a lot of serenity to the performance and his guitar skills just took it a notch higher. He put in a lot of emotion into the song and it was a very fitting tribute to his wife.

After his performance, coach Blake Shelton praised his guitar skills and commended him for taking the melody and song and making it his own. His coach Nick mentioned that his dog and wife Priyanka Chopra ran into the room to groove along to the performance while noting that Thunderstorm has cleared his path to the finale from the very beginning.

"There is nothing bad to say about thunderstorm this guy just delivers a perfect performance each and every week that leaves you with chills and goosebump!!! Beautiful, beautiful job @Thunder_artis #TheVoice #VoteForThisGuy" wrote a fan on Twitter after the performance.

While another noted "Thunderstorm Artis pouring all his emotion into this. Gosh! I love his voice and he feels so approachable. This is honest and poignant, sweet, and tender. He sets an introspective tone and gives us varied dynamics. Very pleasing. #TheVoice #VoiceTop9."

The next artist to perform was 18-year-old Megan Danielle from Team Kelly Clarkson. She and her coach Clarkson connected remotely for the rehearsals and Kelly mentioned that she sees a lot of herself in the artist.

Megan was dedicating her Top 9 performance to her siblings because growing up they were all she had after her father left. Coach Clarkson was seen wiping away her tears before mentioning that their story is quite similar to each other.

For the performance, Megan sang 'What Hurts The Most' by country band Rascal Flatts. She had an amazing rasp to her voice and displayed great vocal control during her performance. After her performance, her coach gushed eloquently, stating: "I love you. I think you are so magical, your tone is so distinct. No one on the planet sounds like you. Each time you sing it sounds like a broken heart trying to fly. I want to thank you for being in my presence and singing and that is a very powerful voice you got there."

Fans loved her performance equally and resonated with her emotions. "So beautiful, Meghan's performance tonight gave me goosebumps so beautiful. #teamkelly, #thevoice," wrote one after her performance.

While another wrote, "#TheVoice - #MeganDanielle sings with such emotion and heart - moves me to #chills - she has that unique gift."

"@kellyclarkson I think you have a winner in @_megan_danielle! She had me sobbing she was so good!!!! #TheVoice" wrote another.

Baldwin hurt at being compared to Bieber's former girlfriends - The Independent

Justin Bieber had a string of romances before he married Hailey Baldwin. One of the more prominent relationships was with Selena Gomez. Hailey has disclosed that the past relationships have impacted her self-esteem.

On Friday (May 8), Hailey shared about it during the Facebook Live show, Live with The Biebers, according to instyle.com.

A fan had asked how the couple handled it when people wanted to interfere in their lives. Bieber let Hailey answer that and, without naming anyone, Hailey disclosed what it was like to be compared to his former girlfriends.

Hailey said that she had a tough time when people compared her and it made her feel less than a woman. She continued that it was not easy but that some fans wanted to convey their thoughts.

The pair have been criticised by Jelena Shippers (fans who back a Bieber-Gomez relationship) but Hailey noted that the fans did not understand everything. She said that people thought they knew about Bieber and his relationships, including what happened between husband and wife but, she said, they did not know.

She added that fans then created information that they felt was true, when it really was not so. Hailey said that she had asked herself why she was going out of her way to set the record straight when it was nobody's business and it did not matter. She added that people did not know what happened behind the scenes.

During the session, the 23-year-old said marrying Bieber, 26, put the limelight on her. She thought she could live a normal life but when she tied the knot and went to Los Angeles, "all of that kind of went out the window".

Hailey noted that there had to be a balance for her. She did not think it was healthy to be extremely isolated but she did not want to go outside because people would follow her with cameras. So, it had been a struggle for her. /TISG

As countries consider lifting lockdowns, some in Asia are experiencing a resurgence in coronavirus cases - CNBC

As governments around the world plan to loosen restrictions imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic, some countries have reported a resurgence in cases — prompting fears that a new wave of infections is imminent.

Public health experts — including those at the World Health Organization — have for weeks warned authorities against lifting containment measures too early, which could cause a rebound in new coronavirus cases. Meanwhile, investors and analysts said another round of lockdowns would exacerbate the damage already inflicted on the global economy.

In Asia, where the coronavirus first hit, several countries including China and South Korea have experienced an uptick in cases after restrictions were eased. In some instances, authorities have had to reimpose measures that restrict interactions between people to once again fight the virus spread.

Jonathan Garner, chief Asia and emerging market equity strategist at Morgan Stanley, said new waves of infections could be a recurring theme facing investors around the world in the coming months.

"It's likely to be with us for a very sustained period and it will materially change the pattern of global economic behavior," he told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" on Monday.

Here's a look at the Asian countries that have reported a resurgence in cases.

China

The coronavirus disease — which has been formally named Covid-19 — was first detected in China last December. The country accounted for a vast majority of cases globally from the start of the year until March, when outbreaks in several European countries — and subsequently the U.S. — accelerated rapidly.

China, the world's second-largest economy, implemented some of the strictest lockdown measures globally. Authorities shut off transportation links from cities including Wuhan — the epicenter of the country's outbreak — and closed schools and businesses.

Those measures are gradually being eased and the total lockdown on Wuhan ended on April 8 after 11 weeks.

For most of the past month, China consistently reported small numbers of daily new cases, most of which were "imported." But health authorities in recent days said there were new local clusters of infections in cities including Wuhan and Shulan.

The new cases found in Wuhan were the first in the city in more than a month, while Shulan — located in the northeast province of Jilin — had not registered any new infections for more than 70 days, reported Reuters.

Officials raised the risk level of Shulan to high from medium and reimposed some lockdown measures on the city this week including closing public spaces such as sporting facilities and libraries, and halting some train service in and out of the city, according to Reuters.

That's not the first time that China has had to reintroduce measures to contain the virus after lifting them. Last month, authorities reportedly tightened restrictions in Harbin city in Heilongjiang province after a rise in imported cases; while gyms in Beijing were ordered to shut again a few weeks after being allowed to resume operations.

South Korea

South Korea was among the first countries outside China to report cases of the coronavirus disease. But unlike China, South Korea managed to lower the number of new cases without extensively locking down its economy.

Instead, the South Korean government responded to the outbreak by quickly ramping up testing capacity and aggressively tracing and isolating potential cases. The country also introduced some social-distancing measures, which restrict gatherings and close schools and workplaces.

New cases in the country fell from hundreds a day to single-digit levels for most of the past two weeks as South Korea started lifting social-distancing measures. But over the weekend, the country reported its biggest daily jump in infections in a month — according to WHO data — with many of those new cases linked to several nightclubs and bars in capital city Seoul.

Authorities are now tracking down the thousands more people who went to those same night spots. Health Minister Park Neung-hoo said the government will decide whether to continue with its plans to reopen schools in stages starting Wednesday, reported Reuters.

Japan

Japan experienced a second wave of Covid-19 before the latest jump in cases in China and South Korea.

The northern island of Hokkaido was the first in Japan to declare a state of emergency in late February, as it had the highest number of coronavirus infections in the country then. Under the state of emergency, schools were closed, large gatherings canceled and people were advised to stay home.

The measures appeared to work and by mid-March, Hokkaido lifted the state of emergency after the number of new cases declined. But less than a month later on April 12, the prefecture reinstated the emergency declaration after an increase in new infections, reported Kyodo News.

Earlier this month, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe extended the nationwide state of emergency to May 31, reported Reuters. But the country's Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura reportedly said on Monday the declaration could be lifted in some regions this week if the number of new Covid-19 cases remain under control.

Trump abruptly ends press conference after contentious exchange with reporters - CNN

Posted: 11 May 2020 10:35 PM PDT

Weijia Jiang, a White House correspondent for CBS News, asked the President why he sees coronavirus testing as a global competition when more than 80,000 Americans have died.
Analysis: Trump acts like he wants the US press to be more like China's
"Maybe that's a question you should ask China," Trump told Jiang, who was born in China and immigrated to the United States when she was two years old. "Don't ask me. Ask China that question, OK?"
Trump attempted to move on by calling on Kaitlan Collins, a White House correspondent for CNN, but Jiang interjected with a follow-up question.
"Sir, why are you saying that to me specifically?" asked Jiang, who was visibly taken aback by Trump's demand.
"I'm telling you," Trump replied. "I'm not saying it specifically to anybody. I'm saying it to anybody that asks a nasty question."
"That's not a nasty question," Jiang said. "Why does it matter?"
Trump then looked again to take a question from another reporter.
Collins, who had let Jiang ask Trump her follow up questions, approached the microphone.
"I have two questions," Collins said.
"No, it's OK," Trump replied.
"But you pointed to me," Collins said. "I have two questions, Mr. President. You called on me."
"I did," Trump said. "And you didn't respond, and now I'm calling on the young lady in the back."
"I just wanted to let my colleague finish," Collins explained. "But can I ask you a question?"
Trump then ended the press conference.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much," he said before leaving the Rose Garden.
The President was strongly criticized by critics for the behavior he displayed.
"A very ugly, ugly ending to that one-hour appearance by the President in the Rose Garden," CNN's Wolf Blitzer said.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called the exchange "pretty pathetic" and wrote on Twitter that Trump "is a coward who tears down others to make himself feel powerful."
Trump viciously attacks NBC News reporter in extended rant after being asked for message to Americans worried about coronavirus
Some critics said Trump's remarks toward Jiang were racist. It wouldn't be the first time Jiang was confronted by racist remarks at the White House.
Jiang wrote on Twitter in March that a White House official, who she did not name, had referred to the coronavirus as the "Kung-flu" to her face.
Other critics suggested the exchange was laced with sexism.
"The President's unprofessionalism is always revealed most clearly when he is interacting with female reporters," tweeted Olivia Nuzzi, Washington correspondent for New York magazine.
A CNN spokesperson declined to comment. A spokesperson for CBS News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Actress Sithara reveals why she decided not to get married - Onmanorama

Posted: 11 May 2020 09:40 PM PDT

Actress Sithara is a known face not just in Malayalam, but also in Tamil and Telugu. After making her acting debut in 1986 in the Malayalam film 'Kaveri', she went on a signing spree and turned to be most sought after actress of 80's and 90's in South India.

The actress recently turned 46 and is still unmarried and single.

During many TV shows, though she had made clear about her 'single' status, she never really opened up about the actual reason.

sithara-2

In a recent media interaction, she revealed that it was her long time decision not to get married. She admitted that she had got many proposals but never chose to get married because of her parents.

Sithara's parents were officers at electricity board and she was very close to them. "I was very close to my father Parameswaran Nair that I was not ready to get married because I did not want to leave my parents and settle far from them. After my father passed away, the idea of marrying and settling down had completely faded away," she said.

sithara-3

Sithara also pointed that she is happy being single and she had enough work to keep herself busy.

In Malayalam the actress was last seen in 2015 movie Saigal Padukayanu but she has been active in Telugu with a couple of movies.

Actress Patti LuPone Is Now Starring In 'Hollywood' Show On Netflix - NPR

Posted: 11 May 2020 08:34 PM PDT

NPR's Ari Shapiro talks with actress Patti LuPone about her role in the new Netflix show, Hollywood, and the future of the revival of the Broadway musical, Company, in which she was to star.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

Patti LuPone has been keeping busy during her lockdown. There was an appearance on Rosie O'Donnell's variety show...

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

PATTI LUPONE: (Singing) Life is such a great adventure. Learn to live it as you go. No one in the world can censure what we do here below.

SHAPIRO: ...A number in Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday celebration...

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

LUPONE: (Singing) Anyone can whistle. That's what they say. Easy. Anyone can whistle.

SHAPIRO: ...And now she's starring in the new Ryan Murphy show "Hollywood" on Netflix.

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "HOLLYWOOD")

LUPONE: (As Avis Amberg) I was in pictures - silent films - good ones, too. But then came the talkies. I had one screen test, and they told me there wasn't a place in talkies for ethnics. A little Jew-y (ph) was the word they used. I politely informed them that Jews built this town and was shown the door.

SHAPIRO: She plays a larger-than-life diva who becomes a studio boss. And LuPone is doing all this while she was supposed to have been on Broadway starring in a revival of the show "Company."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THE LADIES WHO LUNCH")

LUPONE: (Singing) Here's to the ladies who lunch. Everybody laugh.

SHAPIRO: And Patti LuPone joins us now.

Welcome to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED and thanks for fitting us into your busy schedule.

LUPONE: Thank you, Ari.

SHAPIRO: You seem to be making the most of this new reality. What's your secret?

LUPONE: I have none. I really don't. I'm trying to figure it out just like everybody else.

SHAPIRO: OK. Let's talk about this show "Hollywood" on Netflix, which you star in. The show imagines what might have happened if Hollywood just after World War II had been a more inclusive place. And your character creates spaces for people who, in the real world, were excluded by the Hollywood studio system. And so I wonder, was there somebody early in your career who played that kind of role in your life who opened doors that might otherwise have been closed to you?

LUPONE: Not when I was a professional. I didn't have those kind of connections. But at Juilliard, in the drama division, I was - you know, I'm a rebellious person. Nothing's changed. And I think I was quite rebellious at school as well. But they couldn't throw me out because they didn't like my personality, so they threw every role in my direction so that I would fail as an actor. And my champion was Marian Seldes.

SHAPIRO: Oh, yeah.

LUPONE: And if there was ever a problem, Marian was the one that came to my defense. So you know, they did something for me that they didn't do for the rest of the actors. They pigeonholed the rest of the actors into ensemble, you know, leading lady, soubrette, ingenue, et cetera. And with me, because they threw all those different roles in my direction, they created one actor in versatility.

SHAPIRO: For those who aren't familiar, Marian Seldes was the legendary actress. She died in 2014. What do you think it was that she saw in you that made her stick her neck out to create space for you? I mean, did she identify...

LUPONE: Well...

SHAPIRO: ...In her - what was it?

LUPONE: Without boasting, she has said she recognized my talent. You know, I've known, Ari, all my life that I had talent - all my life. It's a God-given gift, and the gift is to be given away. And you know, I'm sure I got in my own way at school, and Marian was there to remind me why I was there and run interference with teachers and me.

SHAPIRO: Was it ever difficult for you to own that and say, I have talent, and I deserve to be here? Was that a process for you?

LUPONE: No, I've - I always knew that I had talent, and I didn't understand why I wasn't getting better roles at school. And John Houseman once said to me I was too short to play a leading lady while I was playing a leading lady (laughter).

SHAPIRO: Wow.

LUPONE: So...

SHAPIRO: Wow.

LUPONE: ...It was just a - John had a vision of leading ladies, which were tall blondes with high cheekbones. So you know, there was a lot of, I guess you might say, prejudice...

SHAPIRO: Yeah.

LUPONE: ...At school.

SHAPIRO: It sounds like the bullying and verbal abuse that's all throughout this show "Hollywood" is something that you remember from your early days and perhaps identify with.

LUPONE: Totally.

SHAPIRO: In the first episode of this show, you engage in more explicit sex scenes than I think I have seen in your entire career.

LUPONE: I know.

SHAPIRO: These scenes are with...

LUPONE: What's wrong with that?

SHAPIRO: ...A very young man who your character has hired for the afternoon.

LUPONE: Right.

SHAPIRO: Did anyone have to twist your arm?

LUPONE: Not a bit.

(LAUGHTER)

LUPONE: Not one bit. I said - when Ryan said, you have a sex scene, I went, finally.

(LAUGHTER)

SHAPIRO: Ryan Murphy, the creator - yeah.

LUPONE: No. I mean, I've had sex scenes before, and I was naked onstage in "The Robber Bridegroom." But it's just fun to do, and I don't have inhibitions that way. I'm - I think I'm a fairly free individual, and I'm certainly a fearless actor. If a director wanted me to do something, I'd - I really want to do it if it - especially if it's out in left field.

SHAPIRO: It's also an interesting way of conveying who this character is that she just hires this man, she tells him what she wants and she gets it from him.

LUPONE: Right. It's the only - it's probably the only place she has control. She's married to a man that doesn't pay her much attention that she knows is having an - having affairs. And you know, she's probably the original desperate housewife.

SHAPIRO: Isn't Ryan Murphy, the show's creator - is somebody who you've worked with before on "Pose" and on "American Horror Story." And he often comes back to the same actors for project after project. What characterizes a Ryan Murphy project as distinct from all the other projects that you do?

LUPONE: I think the variety of roles he trusts you to interpret. Do you know what I mean? He's not pigeonholing any of us. He's going, OK, you're going to do this now; you're going to do that. He's very generous, and he loves actors. And I think he loves women. Thank God he loves women. That's exciting - somebody that trusts your talent and trusts your abilities. It allows us to really exercise and stretch as actors.

SHAPIRO: Because, also, you learn to trust each other, and I'm sure you have a shorthand for what each other wants.

LUPONE: Well, now I will if I work with these actors again. Absolutely.

SHAPIRO: Yeah.

LUPONE: And I hope I do. I mean, I hope "Hollywood" comes back for a second season, and I hope that I get to work with these guys again.

SHAPIRO: Now, as I mentioned, you were supposed to have been on Broadway right now playing Joanne in the revival of "Company." You were in previews when Broadway shut down because of the pandemic. Is the cast staying in touch? How's everybody holding up?

LUPONE: Well, we're doing Zoom meetings (laughter).

SHAPIRO: Oh, really? What happens on those meetings? Are you rehearsing or just chatting and - I don't know - sipping cocktails?

LUPONE: Yes, chatting and sipping cocktails. We did two readings. But because we really don't know when we're coming back - you know, there's an expression - don't leave it in the dressing room. And in this particular case, let's not leave it on Zoom where - you know, performances have a - has - have a peak. And then on the other side, you're limp. And so we can't necessarily leave it on Zoom. We meet just to stay in touch with each other and keep that ensemble intimacy fresh. And if we do go back - when we do go back, I beg your pardon - you know we'll be back in rehearsal for at least three weeks before we start up again.

SHAPIRO: What advice are you giving younger performers who, you know, might've been on the brink of a leap forward in their career, might not have a financial cushion to fall back on? When they turn to you, what do you say to them?

LUPONE: Well, nobody's asked me, and I would say I don't know. I think we're all in the same boat in this respect. It's a financial peril for everybody. And I would - I'm trying to stay disciplined. I'm trying to stay focused. I'm trying to stay positive. I'm trying to say, we will go back to work. I'm trying to decipher everything I hear on the news. It's a very, very, very confusing time. I guess I would say to them to try to stay positive. I don't - you know, I don't know what else to say.

SHAPIRO: Yeah. Patti LuPone, it's been wonderful to talk with you. Thank you so much.

LUPONE: Thank you, Ari.

SHAPIRO: She stars in the new show "Hollywood" on Netflix.

Trump says he would 'certainly consider' mandating states to test all nursing home residents - CNBC

Posted: 11 May 2020 08:01 PM PDT

President Donald Trump said Monday that he would "certainly consider" mandating governors to test all nursing home residents for the coronavirus.

"I will mandate it if you like," Trump told a reporter who asked why the White House had not issued such an order.

Nursing homes have in some states become hotbeds for the spread of the disease.

In New York, the state hardest hit by the pandemic, more than 5,300 people living in nursing homes have died from the virus, according to the Associated Press. In nursing homes and long-term care facilities nationwide, more than 26,000 people have died of the virus, the AP reported.

Those deaths count for more than one-quarter of all coronavirus deaths in the U.S. so far, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

A federal mandate to test nursing home residents would mark the Trump administration's first national coronavirus order. Experts have noted that trying to impose coronavirus-related restrictions at a national level may be legally murky. The White House declined to provide additional comment on the president's remarks.

"I think it's important" to have all nursing home residents tested, Trump said at a White House press conference meant to highlight nationwide Covid-19 testing efforts.

"I think, frankly, some of the governors were very lax with respect to nursing homes," Trump said. "It was obvious right from the beginning."

Trump pointed to a nursing home in Washington – the state where the first coronavirus cases were confirmed – in which dozens of residents died early on in the crisis. "And I would have said, 'nursing homes,' and I did say, 'nursing homes,' that's what they should [do]," Trump said.

"Now, some of the states, many of the states are doing that. But I think all of the states should be. They have the capacity, they should be doing nursing homes. That is a real vulnerability," the president added.

The Trump administration has issued broad guidelines to states on slowing the spread of the virus, as well as an outline for states to follow as they start relaxing their social distancing rules.

But those guidelines are not binding, and the administration has not intervened when some state governors began to lift their social distancing rules without meeting the criteria recommended by the White House.

Trump and other top officials have maintained that enforcement be left up to the states, arguing that a "one size fits all" approach to fighting the virus would not work across the country.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds will self-isolate - decorahnews.com

Posted: Mon, May 11, 2020 11:04 AM

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says she will begin a "modified quarantine plan" as a result of her trip to Washington, D.C. last Wednesday.

At her daily news conference Monday, Reynolds mentioned the positive test result for a member of Vice President Mike Pence's staff last week.  She says she will now practice social distancing, will wear a mask when out in public and will allow members of her staff to work from home.

Reynolds said she had "no direct contact" with the member of Pence's staff who had a positive COVID-19 result, but she is following the advice of the Iowa Department of Public Health.

ICC continues 'contingency planning' for T20 World Cup, players remain unsure: Report - India TV News

Posted: 11 May 2020 07:31 PM PDT

The T20 World Cup is slated to take place in Australia in October later this year.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) might be keeping its fingers crossed when it comes to answering queries on the fate of the T20 World Cup slated to be held in Australia in October-November (due to the coronavirus outbreak), but cricketers don't seem that confident when it comes to the mega event going ahead as per schedule.

Speaking to IANS, an ICC official kept it short and said that no meeting has taken place between the international body and Cricket Australia over the last week and contingency planning continues.

"There has been no meeting (in the last week) and there is no update. Contingency planning continues," the official said.

But over the last couple of months, the cricketers have made it quite evident that the World T20 might have to be postponed keeping an eye on the magnitude of the event and also how social distancing norms need to be strictly followed in the near future amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

Australia opener David Warner shared his thoughts with Rohit Sharma while interacting in an Instagram live chat last week and said: "The ICC World Cup will not go ahead here by the looks of it. It will be difficult to get everyone (16 teams) together."

Australia's limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch, too, feels the tournament might have to be delayed. "I think we might have to get our heads around a T20 World Cup that might be postponed for a month, two months, three months, whatever it has to be," Finch told SEN Radio.

Australia batsman Chris Lynn feels that the situation could be a logistical nightmare if the tournament happens as per schedule. "My personal opinion is no," Lynn told Fox Sports.

"Obviously we're praying for it to go ahead but we've just got to play what's in front of us. Having teams come from all over the world is going to be a logistical nightmare.

"Hotels, travel, keeping the teams in the hotels for a number of weeks before the tournament is going to be tough work moving forward," he added.

Some other players have also spoken about the fans and how having a T20 World Cup in front of empty stands wouldn't be the best way forward.

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell feels that crowds are an integral part of the showpiece event. "... it's going to be hard for us to have crowds. I think if IPL goes ahead they can probably survive without any crowds, but I can't see the T20 World Cup surviving without any people there," Maxwell told ABC Grandstand.

"It's going to be hard for us to justify having a World Cup when we can't get people into the grounds. So I can't see it happening in the near future. We've got to take care of everyone's health and wellbeing."

Pakistan batsman Imam-ul-Haq also said that he would like to have fans around while playing a showpiece event. "I personally feel T20 World Cup, if it happens, should take place with crowds as its charm is something else for players and everyone involved," he pointed.

A BCCI official told IANS that opening the games to fans and still being able to maintain social distancing norms could be a major concern for Cricket Australia.

"With the conditioning that everyone is going through at the moment, would the fans want to gather in a stadium at this stage? Or would the tickets of only one out of 10 seats be made available to keep a semblance of social distancing norms in place?" the official enquired.

article image China's Wuhan reports first virus infection in over a month - Digital Journal

Posted: 11 May 2020 07:01 PM PDT

China on Sunday reported the first case of coronavirus in over a month in Wuhan, the city where the outbreak first started in December last year.

China's National Health Commission also reported the first double-digit increase in countrywide cases in nearly 10 days, saying 14 new infections had been confirmed.

Two of the cases were imported into the country from overseas, the commission said.

The virus first emerged in Wuhan, a major industrial and transport city in central China, in December.

It has since infected nearly four million people worldwide -- claiming more than 270,000 lives -- and crippled the global economy.

The total number infected in China is 82,901, with an official death toll of 4,633.

No new deaths have been reported for nearly a month.

China's ruling Communist Party imposed a quarantine lockdown on tens of millions of people -- first in Wuhan and then the rest of Hubei province -- beginning January 23, making Wuhan the first place in the world subjected to draconian restrictions.

Authorities started lifting restrictions in late March.

China has faced criticism both at home and abroad for downplaying the virus and concealing information about the outbreak when it first emerged in Wuhan.

Beijing has insisted it has always shared information with the World Health Organization and other countries in a timely manner.

A top health official said Saturday, however, that the outbreak exposed "shortcomings" in China's public healthcare system.

Schumer: Next COVID-19 relief bill will include help for local news - Auburn Citizen

Posted: 11 May 2020 06:31 PM PDT

Senator Schumer 6.JPG

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) fields questions after speaking at Cayuga Milk Ingredients in Aurelius about NAFTA negotiations.

Local newspapers, radio and television stations would receive assistance if Congress approves a new COVID-19 relief bill.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer said Monday that the legislation introduced in the House will include language to make local news outlets eligible for the Paycheck Protection Program. The program, which was established in a previous COVID-19 aid bill, is administered by the Small Business Administration and helps employers keep workers on their payrolls.

Many local broadcasters and newspapers are ineligible for the program because they are owned by corporations. The Citizen is owned by Iowa-based Lee Enterprises, which owns more than 70 newspapers in the U.S. Other news outlets in New York are owned by large corporations that aren't eligible for the program, which provides loans to businesses to cover payroll expenses and other costs.

The bill supported by Schumer, D-N.Y., would change the eligibility standards. Local newspapers, radio and television stations would be considered "independent, non-affiliated entities" for the Paycheck Protection Program. The Small Business Administration's rules regarding affiliations will be waived to allow local news outlets to seek loans.

Even though local newspapers and broadcasters are owned by corporations, they would be eligible for loans if their location meets the SBA's definition of a small business.

Loans that are awarded to local news outlets must be used to "support the provision of local news, information, content or emergency information by that outlet." And the companies must show that the loan is needed to "support expenses associated with the continued provision of local news, information, content or emergency information," according to Schumer's office.

"Local news outlets are the glue that keeps communities in upstate New York informed and stitched together, and during these uncertain times, they are more vital than ever," Schumer said.

Schumer hopes the measure will help the struggling local news industry. Many broadcasters and newspapers have reported lost advertising revenue and either laid off or furloughed workers due to the economic collapse caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Citizen is one of several New York newspapers that furloughed workers, including journalists, during the economic and public health crises.

The New York State Broadcasters Association and the New York News Publishers Association support the proposal.

"Despite suffering a catastrophic loss of income, newspapers throughout the state are providing journalism about COVID-19 to all readers free of charge," said Diane Kennedy, president of the New York News Publishers Association. "We are heartened to know that Senator Schumer, a longtime champion of the free press, is once again intervening to preserve citizens' access to local news."

There are other proposals to help local news. The News Media Alliance, an industry group representing thousands of newspapers, and a group of members of Congress support directing federal advertising funding to local news outlets. Grants or tax credits to support news operations are also being considered.

But the legislation that would allow broadcasters and newspapers to access the Paycheck Protection Program could be a "vital lifeline," Schumer said, to continue operations while advertising revenue declines.

"I will fight to make sure it stays in when it comes over to the Senate because New York's local media needs and deserves all the help we can offer — and they need it now," he said.

Jurgen Locadia says that he fully intends to stay at FC Cincinnati despite his loan expiring on July 5.

The striker is on loan with the MLS side from Brighton & Hove with Cincy having the option of triggering a reported $10 million (£8m) deal to secure Locadia permanently.

"I had a conversation with my agent that it was my goal to stay here," Locadia told MLSSoccer.com. "He got in contact with Brighton, but it's between the clubs now I guess. They know I want to stay here."
