| Community comes together to help teen street vendor in viral video - KESQ Posted: 08 May 2020 11:32 PM PDT Indio Councilmember Waymond Fermon found Francisco "Chuy", the 17-year-old street vendor featured in a video that went viral on social media earlier this week.  Francisco was featured in a video that spread around social media showing the aftermath of a woman verbally harassing Francisco along Avenue 42 on the border of Indio & Bermuda Dunes on Saturday. "I don't want him in my neighborhood. You go to Indian Wells, you don't see lawlessness," the woman told the passerbys. The passerbys responded saying it doesn't matter and instead call the police. The woman then says, "It does matter, it brings down the quality of life." The passebys later wrote, on a GoFundMe page for him, that they always see the young man selling goods on that street, typically with a smile on his face despite the blistering heat. Councilman Fermon saw the video and put out a call for help from the community in locating Francisco. Fermon credits Omar Dominguez, owner of familiagrafix, for working tirelessly over several hours to find Francisco. A group of residents met at the Indio Grandmarket Place Friday afternoon to show him support. According to Fermon, Francisco is a 17-year-old who recently lost his father and is working to support his mother and a sibling. He lives in Los Angeles and travels to the valley with his coworkers to work. "I'm excited, ecstatic that we could turn a negative into something positive," Fermon said. "This young man is going through some troubling times right now in his life and I'm glad that we could get him some hope right now." Dominguez says several residents bought flowers from Francisco, selling out three times on Friday. "We're here for him, we're just trying to help out. It could've been him. In addition, CV Food Truck CEO Erick Becerril is working with Francisco to ensure he has all the proper permits to be able to sell goods. | Apex Legends new trailer reveals Loba’s abilities - NME Posted: 08 May 2020 10:22 PM PDT  Respawn Entertainment has launched a new gameplay trailer for Apex Legends Season 5 – Fortune's Favor, and it finally provides glimpses at Loba Andrade's abilities. The clip also confirms map changes as well as new cosmetic rewards. Loba Andrade was revealed in a recent cinematic trailer for the upcoming update – which launches May 12 – teasing her abilities as well as briefly exploring her backstory. The new gameplay trailer confirms that Loba will have teleportation abilities, which she achieves by throwing out a small disc of sorts and instantly re-appearing at its location. The range of this ability is as yet unclear. Another ability that was briefly demonstrated in the video sees Loba turn her wolf head-topped staff into a mini 'shop' to purchase weapons, upgrades and items. Watch the trailer below. In a series of TV appearances in 2015, she slammed Trump's rhetoric on immigrants as "racist." McEnany also called Trump a "showman" and a "sideshow" and suggested he wasn't a serious candidate for the presidency. "I don't want to claim this guy," she said at the time. CNN shared a montage of her past comments Thursday: McEnany also criticized Trump on Twitter before her tone began to change around July 2015, the network noted. McEnany became a pro-Trump contributor for CNN during the 2016 election, later taking on the roles of spokesperson for the Republican National Committee and the Trump 2020 re-election campaign. Grande and Bieber are radically different singers, but they find common ground here, Bieber's percussive patterns shimmying in and around Grande's mountainous howls. For a moment in which every choice feels tenuous, this song exudes a slow, legible certitude. (Proceeds benefit the First Responders Children's Foundation.) JON CARAMANICA Bob Dylan, 'False Prophet'The songs Bob Dylan has been surprise-releasing every few weeks are starting to add up. He has tied "False Prophet," the latest one, to the announcement of an album due in June: "Rough and Rowdy Ways." As in his April 16 song, "I Contain Multitudes," his band sets up a vamp and Dylan talk-sings his way through a proud self-assessment that mixes biblical, mystical and literary allusions with bits of rock 'n' roll lore. He rasps, "I ain't no false prophet, I just know what I know/I go where only the lonely can go." This time, the vamp is a slouchy blues shuffle and the lyrics are pointed. Dylan is a longtime expert in toggling between the apocalyptic and the individual: "I searched the world over for the Holy Grail/I sing songs of love, I sing songs of betrayal." What's startling is that after decades of shrugging off that specific role, he's willing to play the prophet. JON PARELES The self-love strut "N.U.T.S" is a pitch-perfect revisiting of the issues-soul of the 1970s. Isiah has a lithe, poignant, carefully sweet voice, and he sings about how important it is to allow others to see the real you over a Chromeo production full of prideful strings, weepy sax and warm-bath keys. CARAMANICA Peter Manos, 'Tennessee'Peter Manos is from Texas, but "Tennessee" is no country song. It's an electronic lament, Auto-Tuned and steeped in James Blake and Frank Ocean; it also hints at the Beatles' chromatic chord progressions. The singer is bereft that "You don't answer my calls," and even as programmed arpeggios swell to support him, he's left uncomprehending and alone, pure male angst: "How could I understand?" he wonders. PARELES Keith Jarrett, 'Answer Me'Don't expect a livestream concert from Keith Jarrett any time soon. If this pre-eminent pianist were of that mind, he'd probably have done one long ago. As Nate Chinen wrote in 2013, "It's hard to think of a major jazz figure who has been as cloistered as Mr. Jarrett, while remaining a vital force." He hardly gives interviews and lives on a sprawling property in northwest New Jersey, touring only occasionally. His albums in recent years have consisted of archival recordings from years-old concerts. On the occasion of Jarrett's 75th birthday on Friday, ECM Records has released a single track from a 2016 performance in Budapest. "Answer Me" originated as a midcentury German pop song before becoming a hit for Nat King Cole. Unlike the version from last year's live full-length, "Munich 2016," Jarrett starts this performance with the bridge, a dolorous minor passage that in his hands sounds like lieder; before long he's fallen into the gentle, ribboning symmetry of the main melody, from which he hardly strays. GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO Blake Mills, 'Summer All Over'Blake Mills has been a guitarist and producer for musicians as diverse as John Legend, Fiona Apple and Alabama Shakes. His new album, "Mutable Set," is deliberately and startlingly restrained, though far from simple. "Summer All Over" has a waltzing pulse and a vocal just above a whisper; most of its backup is chords played on a creaky piano, but they are quietly bolstered by orchestral instruments. He's sings about global warming with cleareyed, pragmatic details: "Looking for water, looking for shade/And there's only sunblock and beer." PARELES Rhiannon Giddens featuring Sxip Shirey, 'Just the Two of Us'Rhiannon Giddens commemorates Bill Withers, who died in April, with a fondly idiosyncratic version of "Just the Two of Us," backed by the unlikely combination of harmonica, drums and the hoot of low brass (sousaphone and trombone). She hints at New Orleans, reggae and jazzy scat-singing as she proclaims one-on-one affection. PARELES The Weeknd, 'I'm a Virgin'The Weeknd co-wrote the most recent episode of "American Dad," and there's a plotline that involves him confessing a dark secret to a fan trying to seduce him. He does so in song: "I'm a Virgin" functions well as both songcraft and self-parody. His voice is that familiar shrill exhale, and it's chilling to hear it applied to such unlikely confessions: "Underneath the lies and the big talk, I've been waiting for a wife/Never watched porn, never did drugs, 'cause I'm terrified." CARAMANICA Jamie xx, 'I Don't Know'The producer Jamie xx whips up phantom drumlines, laced with sirens and warped vocals, working through beats that shift and accelerate but still haven't peak before the track plays out. PARELES Nerves not jangled enough lately? Try Folie, which shares the razor-wired bubble gum aesthetic of last year's blitz-pop sensation, 100 gecs. "Cortisol" is full of concise, catchy little pop devices, from its bits of singsong melody to the thumping beat that arrives about midway through. But every one of those devices is tweaked to maximize irritation: pitched up, distorted, perforated with silences or followed by chemtrails of dissonance. And every so often the whole thing comes unsprung, only to regroup and leap ahead again. It's not aggressive; it's just having noisy fun. PARELES Aaron Parks, 'Solace'What Aaron Parks has in common with Keith Jarrett — in addition to onetime status as a child prodigy, and a clarion touch at the piano — is his sometimes-dangerous belief in the primacy of precision. "Solace" starts with 70 seconds of quizzical, disarming solo piano, the occasional discolored harmony catching your ear. Then the members of his band Little Big arrive, and the music fastens down tightly around the shared melody. The querying feeling is basically gone: In its stead is a polished cohesion, the reassurance of something executed crisply and masterfully, almost without encumbrance. | Trump sought a reopening but found the virus in the White House instead - CNN Posted: 08 May 2020 06:22 PM PDT A day after breaking his White House self-isolation for a cross-country trip meant to signal the country's readiness to restart, Trump received word that one of his Oval Office valets tested positive for the virus. Two days later, Vice President Mike Pence's press secretary also tested positive, setting off another round of tests, delaying the vice president's trip to Iowa and causing more hand-wringing inside the White House about who might be infected. Ivanka Trump's personal assistant also tested positive for coronavirus, a source familiar told CNN on Friday night, although she has been teleworking for nearly two months and has not been around the President's daughter in several weeks. The arrival of coronavirus to the West Wing only served to illustrate the continued spread of the disease months into a pandemic that's taken more than 77,000 American lives and turned a once hot economy to ice. Even the nightly deep cleanings, regular testing and a lot of wishful thinking couldn't prevent the virus from arriving on Trump's doorstep. As the President agitates for states to loosen their restrictions and allow Americans back into workplaces and businesses, the sight of his aides contracting the disease did little to boost confidence the nation is ready to return to normal, even as jobless claims skyrocket to never-seen-before levels and options for reviving the economy fall short. At the same time, it had no apparent effect on Trump's willingness to proceed as normal on Friday, when he eschewed a mask while visiting with nonagenarian World War II veterans and invited a large group of lawmakers to the White House for a meeting, all of whom were tested before arriving. Asked the reason his staff weren't wearing masks on Friday, Trump pointed to the one White House official in the room who was: the White House photographer.  It's all part of Trump's business-as-usual approach that's become his default as he looks to move past the outbreak. Even as case counts continue rising and the death toll inches northward, Trump has urged governors to consider lifting their restrictions, even though most states currently fail to meet the reopening criteria he unveiled himself last month. He's downplayed the need for more testing, even though his medical experts have said the opposite and some of his aides now receive them daily. And he's declined to wear a mask in public, believing the image of him behind a face covering would send the wrong message as he works to convince Americans the health crisis is waning. But pandemics pay little attention to messaging. And even if Trump hopes to project business-as-usual at the White House, the virus raging outside its gates has found a way in.  Trump was angry this week when he learned the valet tested positive and asked aides how it was possible a person responsible for handling his beverages could have been exposed to the virus. Trump doesn't like germs and has chastised staff before when they cough or sneeze in his presence. News of the positive case "hit the fan" among staffers on Wednesday evening, people familiar with the matter said. "It's a little bit strange, but it's one of those things," Trump said when asked whether the incident spooked him. Afterward, scores of Secret Service agents and officers, along with administration staffers, were seen filing into a makeshift testing facility on the White House campus to be tested themselves. Trump told reporters everyone around him would now be tested daily -- though he also suggested it "wasn't a perfect art" and has downplayed the need for widespread testing in states looking to reopen. The test the White House uses, an Abbott Labs product which can produce results quickly, also has a 15% false negative rate, according to the head of the National Institutes of Health. Privately, some White House officials have said it was only a matter of time before the virus arrived in the West Wing, where aides rarely wear masks and social distancing is recommended in theory but often difficult to carry out in practice. Mark Meadows, the President's chief of staff, indicated Friday the new cases had triggered a change in procedures -- even though federal guidelines on social distancing were issued months ago and new, more specific recommendations on how to reopen businesses have been held up by the White House. "I don't want to get into all the procedures that we have embarked upon," he said. "But I can tell you this is probably the safest place that you can come to." Later, Meadows said people serving Trump in close proximity such as valets would begin wearing masks and offered tests to journalists covering the President. A senior White House official said Friday evening contact tracing was performed inside the White House, and test results for all of the people Pence spokeswoman Katie Miller had been in contact with came back negative, including for her husband Stephen Miller, who is Trump's senior policy adviser. Testing and temperature checks have been boosted throughout the West Wing, and the White House is making sure staff wear masks in the residence, the official said, while the entire West Wing is being sanitized on an even more frequent basis. The official said "it's not perfect" but they are trying to boost measures to be an example to businesses around the country on how to deal with the virus. New realitiesWhen a White House staffer first contracted coronavirus in March, it was seen as a one-off that did not appear to create further contagion among the executive staff. But the latest cases involve people who work in much closer proximity to the President and vice president. And they occurred even with the robust screening and testing practices the White House Medical Unit enacted earlier in the outbreak. Both strike at the heart of the West Wing. The military valets responsible for the President's personal needs are a rare group with access to the food he eats and the Diet Cokes he summons with the push of a red button. Since 1995, the award has been given annually to recognize undergraduates for positive contributions to campus life. The University announcement notes that the selection committee "received over 130 letters of nomination." The senior recipients are Bozhidar Stankovikj '20, Caleb Visser '20, Jackson Artis '20, Jacob Berman '20, Jonathan Haynes '20, Meghan Slattery '20, Sirad Hassan '20, Tabitha Belshee '20, and Toni Xu '20. Kelton Chastulik '21 is the first junior to receive this recognition since 2017. Chastulik is a Woodrow Wilson School concentrator from Chambersburg, Pa. On campus, he is a Whitman College residential college adviser (RCA), a member of the men's track and field team, and is involved in the Pace Center for Civic Engagement, the Student Volunteers Council, and several other service-oriented organizations. In a statement to The Daily Princetonian, Chastulik described himself as "humbled to be alongside such a great cohort of students" — a sentiment echoed by multiple recipients of the award. "I look up to a lot of these students in many ways so it was a great feeling to be awarded alongside them," Chastulik wrote. Likewise, Stankovikj noted that "it's an honor to be nominated for such a wholesome award." A Wilson School concentrator from Skopje, Macedonia, Stankovich is the founder of the University's Macedonian Society, an Orange Key tour guide, and the Chair of the Peer Representatives, where he defends students accused of academic integrity violations. "Community building has been a central part of my life since I graduated from a United World College, and it's made easy by the wonderful people in the Coffee Club, Orange Key, Mock Trial, the Peer Reps, and so many more," Stankovikj wrote to the 'Prince.' "I'm incredibly grateful for their kind words and friendship!" Visser, a politics concentrator from Williamsburg, Va., is involved in both Undergraduate Student Government and the Princeton Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He is also a Wilson College RCA, a campus organizer for Vote100, a politics department undergraduate student representative, and co-chair of the Class Day Committee. In a statement to the 'Prince,' Visser emphasized that much of what represents the award winners' efforts on campus "truly happens in community." Meghan Slattery, a operations research and financial engineering concentrator from Bayport, N.Y., served as president of Cloister Inn on the Interclub Council, leader trainer and canoe trip leader with Outdoor Action, and co-president of the Engineering Council. Also a member of the women's swim and diving team, Slattery coordinated Princeton's Special Olympics Swimming program and organized the Teams and Toys service project with Athletes in Action, according to the University announcement. "I have been inspired by so many wonderful people throughout my time at Princeton, and I am immensely grateful for those I have met over the past four years," Slattery wrote in a statement. "It is an honor to receive the Spirit of Princeton Award alongside such a great group!" Hassan, a Wilson School major from Frederick, Md., is a peer academic advisor for Whitman College, a member of the Religious Life Council, and an executive board member of the Princeton University Muslim Student Association. She is also a SHARE peer and Community Action leader, and in April she represented the University on the Jeopardy! College Championship.
