Chances are good you don’t have any immediate plans right now to go on an international trip. However, if you were trying to enroll in Global Entry earlier this year, you’re going to have to wait until at least June to finish the process.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection office announced last week that it’s suspending enrollment for programs such as Global Entry, SENTRI, and NEXUS indefinitely, but at least until June 1.
That means if you were conditionally approved for any of those services and had an appointment scheduled for this month, it’s not happening anymore.
Conditionally-approved applicants that need an interview will need to reschedule that appointment for after June 1, and if we’re being honest, you might want to push it to a little later than that to be on the safe side. Global Entry appointments are notoriously hard schedule, so you also might be waiting a bit even if you try to schedule it at the first available time.
There is a bit of good news on that front: In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Customs and Border Patrol has extended the period of time an application remains active, so you now have 485 days from the date of your application to complete the enrollment process.
If you already have Global Entry and need to renew, CBP has also decided to extend the befits of those that are already enrolled for 18 months, provided you apply for a renewal before your current membership expires.
That said, “Enrollment on Arrival” desks are still open, so if you happen to be returning to the United States from an international trip you can still do your interview when you arrive, at least for now.
